Earlier versions of Safari?

I used to be able to download articles from JSTOR (an academic website, accessed via Boston University), but now when I click on the download icon, I just get a dark screen. My current version of Safari (4.03) is not supported by the Boston University tech support. Apparently I need to use an earlier version of Safari, but when upgrades are done online, it doesn't add the new program, it merely updates the older one. So here's the question: Is it possible to get an earlier version of Safari? Also, I'd like to keep my current version for use on other web-related activities. Any suggestions?
Steve

I have a question for you:
Did you by any chance download an internet "enhancer" like SpeedDownload?
And then decide not to use it? Think about it carefully . . . anything like that
to make downloads faster or easier??? That could mess up downloads for you.

  • How do I roll back to an earlier version of Safari in Snow Leopard?

I recently applied the recent snow leopard update including safari 5.1.   Now the juniper vpn no longer recoginzes safari.   How do I roll back to the previous version of safari? (5.0.5?)

Solved.  (well actually worked around).    Downloaded pacifist (http://www.charlessoft.com/) downloaded the SL dmg (http://appldnld.apple.com.edgesuite.net/content.info.apple.com/Safari5/041-0564. 20110413.Fi9pb/Safari5.0.5SnowLeopard.dmg) Opened the dmg in pacifist, right clicked on package and installed to default location.    I am now able to run the juniper vpn

  • Installing earlier version of Safari

I've had a lot of trouble with Safari 5 (using all my installed memory within two hours). I decided to go back to Safari 4 and downloaded it. However, it won't let me install it, telling me "You already have a later version of Safari on this volume". How do I go about installing Safari 4?

Those who prefer not to continue using the fastest, safest version of Safari (5.0.5) and want to revert back to an older version (and can accept the security risks in so doing), rather than find out how to correct their faulty system, can do so by performing an archive and install using their original install disks (Note: this is for Tiger and Leopard users only):
    How to Archive & Install:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107120
Then update Safari to version 4 from your backup copy of the installer.  You can also download the version for your system from here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL877
Is that the only way? An archive and install would take HOURS (it always does - there's the Install itself, then there's the Combo Update, then there's all the Java and Security updates, then there's upgrading iTunes, and finally upgrading Safari - it makes me tired just to think about that, let alone giving up the use of my computer for the best part of a day). Can I not quit Safari and trash the app, then try and install Safari 4 (leaving my bookmarks and top sites in situ)?
Klaus, you will be aware of my main problem with Safari 5, as you've posted in that thread. Nothing has worked, Safari 5 still uses all my memory and I have to quit and relaunch about three times each day. If I could resolve the Safari 5 problem, it would be by far the best solution, but have you any other ideas about that?

  • How can I install a version of Safari compatible with MacOS 7.5

At some point I downloaded and installed Safari 6.0.2 on a MacBook Pro (4.1) running OS 10.7.4. When I tried to open it, an error message appeared stating that this version of Safari is incompatible with OS 10.7.x and is compatible with OS 10.8. Since then I updated to OS 10.7.5. After completing the update the iCloud System Preferences automatically opened. Next to the Bookmarks Icon was a button saying "Install Safari." Pushing this button brings me to a webpage that appears to be advertising copy for Safari but seems to lack any option for downloading Safari. Searching for an OS 10.7.5 compatible version I came across a page with quite a number of Safari downloads at Apple - Support - Downloads. This page offers dowloads of Saafari for earlier versions of Safari, but not for an OS 10.7.x compatible version of Safari. What is the solution? If I upgraded to OS 10.8 or OS 10.9 would I gain access to Safari once again? I'd be most appreciative of any help with this issue. Thanks.

Thanks Z-B-B for your quick response. I downloaded and installed the version of Safari (6.1.4) that is described as compatible with OS 10.7.5.on the website you suggested. • Download older version of safari

My company has a Bill Pay service which, as I understand was tested successfully with Safari 5.0.  The vendor who supplies it says that they support Safari 5.0, but we have a user with the latest version of Safari who cannot use the service.  He refuses to try Firefox or Chrome as alternatives to Safari.  He asked one of our staff if it was possible to download an older version of Safari, the one that is supposed to work correctly.  I have no idea where he would look for that, or why Safari was updated, so going back to the previous version could open him to security risks.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks,
    Bill

You cannot use an earlier version of Safari without installing an earlier version of OS X with which it would be compatible.

  • How to uninstall safari 4.0.3 so i can reinstall and earlier version

i removed all traces of safari and when i tried to install an earlier version it would not, citing there was a newer version already installed. it would only install 4.0.3, which does not work. 5 minutes into it and it still would not load anything.
i don't have concierge on my computer, so that isn't the problem
nothing could be more stressful than having my work interrupted because i can't access the internet, lost all my bookmarks trying to get safari to work, and just plain old frustration that my complaint was deleted rather than addressed.
any suggestions other than a clean reinstall or something else that drastic would be appreciated.
meanwhile, i'm digging Firefox for the first time. it works.

I have been on this forum for the past 8 years. do you really think that I have not already done a search? oh please...don't go there.
i repaired permissions. i did all that.
i have done everything necessary. after 5 minutes of loading and loading and loading and still nothing being loaded, i gave up. after deleting every trace of safari and still there being something on the harddrive that is being identified as the more recent version (4.0.3) and not finding that remnent anywhere, i can't reinstall an earlier version. and reinstalling 4.0.3 didn't improve the situation at all.
what did improve my ability to get on any website really fast and come here to moan and groan that my day was ruined was thank god there is Opera! It's fast, it's easy to use and it zooms great. so until i get a better answer than no answer at all, i'll use Opera.
if i sound bitter, so what. this is my 2nd mac, your first apparently.
I am running 10.4.11....not 10.5 which you have and the removal of concierge, which is NOT even on my computer would not fix the problem that may have worked for you. i don't need your condescending flippant remark as a fix. lets see how calmly composed you are when doodoo flies with a bum update or whatever. you'll learn. but thanks anyway.

  • A very important site, does not function properly anymore, how can i go back to an earlier version of firefox

Before i downloaded your firefox 8.0.1, I used firefox to 'save as' the ''Unrealized gain/loss page'' from a brokerage account, - for my ongoing historical financial records file (safari doesn't work for this site).
On the Unrealized gain/loss page, there is a '+' symbol (in front of each stock owned) that one needs to 'clic' on (turns to a -) to see the various dates (and financial data) when you purchased different lots of the same stock. (say, ''IBM''; purchased IBM shares on 21-10-'11, 100 shares, @ $147, current price @ $180, gain of $33/share, total gain $3,300 / 10-14-'11 purchased 200 IBM shares, @ $191, current price @ $180, loss of $11/share, total loss $2200 / - and so on for however many individual 'lots' one has of that particular stock. ). This information is very important to me, and now i can not 'save' it.
    - So I want to know how I 'fix' this - or - how I can go back to the earlier version, that did work.

To downgrade to Firefox 3.6 first uninstall Firefox 4, but do not select the option to "Remove my Firefox personal data". If you select that option it will delete your bookmarks, passwords and other user data.
You can then install the latest version of Firefox 3.6 available from http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all-older.html - it will automatically use your current bookmarks, passwords etc.
To avoid possible problems with downgrading, I recommend going to your profile folder and deleting the following files if they exist - extensions.cache, extensions.rdf, extensions.ini, extensions.sqlite and localstore.rdf. Deleting these files will force Firefox to rebuild the list of installed extensions, checking their compatibility, and reset toolbar customizations.
For details of how to find your profile folder see https://support.mozilla.com/kb/Profiles

  • I continue to get a message stating "This version of Safari is no longer supported.  Please upgrade to a supported browser."  How do I do that?

I'll start by saying I;m not real computer smart.  I need layman's terms.
I've been having issues completing transactions via Safari and based on the info I've gathered it has to do with my "no longer supported" version of Safari.  I get a statement saying "This version of Safari is no longer supported.  Please upgrade to a supported browser."  I have an iMac 3.06 GHz processor with 4 GB memory with OS X v10.6.8.
I understand I need to upgrade my Safari V5.1.10 but how do I do that?  When I click software update it says I'm updated.  Every time I do a search for Safari updates I get info for OS X & Yosemite.  However, I don't understand what exactly that is.  Just want a version of Safari that works.  Appreciate the patience of anyone that is willing to help.

    Hi
The version you using is not that old, but the upgrade is immediately required.
    Here are few available options.
    1) How to upgrade OS
    http://www.apple.com/in/osx/how-to-upgrade/
    2)
    Upgrading to Mavericks
You can upgrade to Mavericks from Lion or directly from Snow Leopard. Mavericks can be downloaded from the Mac App Store for FREE.
    Upgrading to Mavericks
To upgrade to Mavericks you must have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 or Lion installed. Download Mavericks from the App Store. Sign in using your Apple ID. Mavericks is free. The file is quite large, over 5 GBs, so allow some time to download. It would be preferable to use Ethernet because it is nearly four times faster than wireless.
        OS X Mavericks- System Requirements
Macs that can be upgraded to OS X Mavericks
             1. iMac (Mid 2007 or newer) - Model Identifier 7,1 or later
             2. MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer) - Model Identifier 5,1 or later
             3. MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             4. MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer) - Model Identifier 2,1 or later
             5. Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             6. Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
             7. Xserve (Early 2009) - Model Identifier 3,1 or later
To find the model identifier open System Profiler in the Utilities folder. It's displayed in the panel on the right.
         Are my applications compatible?
See App Compatibility Table - RoaringApps.
    3) If you are working and used to using some older applications on your computer, updating to Yosemite will create so many problems. Some of your older applications will not work anymore and you will have to upgrade them too. This = $$$$ . Maybe it will be cheaper to buy a new computer
Install Google Chrome or Opera Browser for free.

  • Firefox 4 refuses to load pages on my mac os 10.5.8 and brand new laptop as well- i gave to force quit over and over- can i revert to an earlier version? will the problem be fixed soon? - previous versions worked fine

ever since i downloaded the 4.0 version of firefox, it has not worked on either computer[ macs] - earlier versions worked fine. It refuses to load pages and freezes [ on various sites , not just one]so i have to force quit it over and over.

    HI,
Empty the Safari Cache from the Safari Menu Bar more often.
Go to the Safari Menu Bar, click Safari/Preferences. Make note of all the preferences under each tab. Quit Safari. Now go to ~/Library/Preferences and move this file com.apple.safari.plist to the Desktop.
Relaunch Safari and see if that makes a difference. If not, move the .plist file back to the Preferences folder. If Safari functions as it should, move that .plist file to the Trash.

  • How to earlier version Acrobat Reader Appg

Earlier versions of Adobe Reader App allowed saving pdf files from email attachment in IPAD memory. Current version apparently promoting Cloud based approach, which is useless without Internet access.  Personally  I don't  appreciate such coerced approach from a reputable company .

    Hi,
I am referring to earlier version of Acrobat Reader App, that allowed PDF attachments received via email to be opened and saved in IPAD storage as files which could be accessed offline.  Ever since i updated to newer versions i cannot open attachments in Adobe Reader App, it only offers print option. FYI, I use IPAD version of Safari browser.  Do let me know if you need other details. Thanks again..

  • I have Mac OS 10.5.8 - can I download an earlier version of Firefox? The one on the site is for OS 10.6.0.

I'm encountering some sites that don't support Safari so I have to download Firefox. But I use Mac OS 10.5.8 and so I'd need an earlier version than the one available on your site for download. Can you help?

All of the earlier version are sorted here:
    [http://ftp://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/releases/ Firefox All Releases]
However I think your OS is supported, too. Check here:
    * [http://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/6.0/system-requirements/ FF System Requirements]
IMPORTANT NOTE: Don't forget that the previous versions have security problems. For the latest security updates you MUST upgrade to latest version. That's what I STRONGLY recommend. Thanks!
Don't forget to hit 'Solved it'.

  • What current version of safari is recommended for Os 10.5.8?

What current version of safari is recommended for Os 10.5.8?

None. The browser installed with 10.5.8 is the last for that version of OS X. To upgrade Safari you need to upgrade OS X:
    Upgrading to Snow Leopard
You can purchase Snow Leopard through the Apple Store: Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard - Apple Store (U.S.). The price is $19.99 plus tax. You will be sent physical media by mail after placing your order.
After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store. Access to the App Store enables you to download Mavericks if your computer meets the requirements.
         Snow Leopard General Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel processor
           2. 1GB of memory
           3. 5GB of available disk space
           4. DVD drive for installation
           5. Some features require a compatible Internet service provider;
               fees may apply.
           6. Some features require Apple’s iCloud services; fees and
               terms apply.
    Upgrading to Lion
If your computer does not meet the requirements to install Mavericks, it may still meet the requirements to install Lion.
You can purchase Lion at the Online Apple Store. The cost is $19.99 (as it was before) plus tax.  It's a download. You will get an email containing a redemption code that you then use at the Mac App Store to download Lion. Save a copy of that installer to your Downloads folder because the installer deletes itself at the end of the installation.
         Lion System Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7,
               or Xeon processor
           2. 2GB of memory
           3. OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
           4. 7GB of available space
           5. Some features require an Apple ID; terms apply.
