Early 08 iMac not booting - You Need to Restart Message
So after lunch today, I touched the shift key to wake up my iMac from sleeping. Screen came up, but it was totally frozen with distorted green digital "crud" in various places in the display. (no other way I know to describe the green stuff, it wasn't consistent lines or anything...just random distortion).
I powered down to restart, and the following message came up http://gallery.me.com/daveoli#100064 advising me I had to restart again. Did so, and same message. Tried the following methods, all resulting in the same message coming up:
Unplugged completed, waited an hour (in case of overheating) and powered-up.
Booted holding D key for h/w test - no test just got same message.
Booted in safe mode.
Booted from CD.
I called apple support, and the tech advised me to boot holding down cmd-option-r and then p to reset pram. 3 bongs, and then release....this worked! The mac booted up. First thing I did was connect firewire drive and make a back up. Ran a disk check with disk util and everything was ok. I then started to download the hw util from the mac site...and wham, screen froze again with the green crud.
This time, restarting with the resetting the pram did not work. Nothing gets me to progress beyond that "need to restart" screen. I will call Apple again in the morning...but in the mean time, any one here have any ideas or have seen this issue before?
That's a *kernel panic.*
They are usually caused by hardware problems, but can be software.
Disconnect all peripherals, except keyboard and mouse. Reconnect one at a time to see if you can find the culprit.
If that's no help, run the Apple Hardware Test, from the separate disc that came with your Mac.

After upgrading to Snow Leopard, I get "you need to restart" messages!
After upgrading, I've gotten the "you need to restart" messages, forcing me to push down on the Power button once in a while. Sometimes I can use the computer for a whole day without getting it, but sometimes I get it 4-6 times a day. This is usually when I am using Firefox (with multiple saved tabs). I've updated the two plug-ins I have in Firefox, and I've downloaded all the software updates. Here is the error report. Can anyone please help? Thank you!

But Firefox was running in the background (after I already tried uninstalling and reinstalling it). Any help appreciated. Thank you! Here's the log:

I got the "You need to restart" message, and after I restarted it my macbook is stuck on the blue loading screen.
Please try to boot in safe mode. If successful, launch the Console application and look under "System Diagnostic Reports" for the most recent panic log. Select it and post the contents here.

If you can't boot in safe mode, follow the other instructions here:

Blue screen keeps popping up after "you need to restart" message
While I was rendering a movie in After Effects, the screen turned black with the message "you need to restart your computer". So I did. But after the restart nothing will load. So in the upper right corner the only thing there is the magnifying glass (so no time, airport etc). If I want to start something (like Chrome or whatever) it loads and a few seconds after that a blue screen pops up and than the app is closes again... If I do nothing a blue screen keeps popping up also (guess something wants to start and gets shut down again).
I tried the apple hardware test (extended) and it said everything was ok. I also disconnected everything from my iMac, no help. Then I tried reinstalling OS X, problem was still there. I also repaired disk and permissions.
So I really don't know what to do now, hope you can help.

Panic Kernal: You need to restart your computer, Help please...
Yesterday I installed an update on my MacBook and everything went haywire. I installed the Apple updates
that were recommended for my computer when it did it's weekly update
check. After the install I quit all open applications and did a
restart per the on screen prompt. Finder closed and the computer just
sat for over a half hour and never would finish shutting down. No key
strokes or commands would do anything. As a last ditch effort I held
the power key down until it shut down. I waited a minute then powered
back up. The gray screen with the apple logo comes up then the spinning wheel. Then a
panic kernal saying the computer needs to be restarted. I tried ten
times then I reset the PRAM then I did two hardware checks. First the
short check then the long one. Both tests showed all hardware to be
fine. Then I called Apple. They told me to reset the PRAM, told me to
do a hardware check then told me to boot in safe mode. Then told me to
try an archive reinstall by inserting disc one, power on, then hold
the C key after the startup chime sounds. One of two things happen
when this is done, it either goes to a blank blue screen or the "You
need to restart the computer" message comes up. If I power on with the
disc in and hold the option key the hard drive and the disc shows on
the screen. If I click on the hard drive the "restart message comes up. If I
click on the disc the blank blue screen usually comes up but twice the
"restart" message came up. I have tried all of the start-up key strokes, Once I got into safe mode but I can't get into it anymore, it now gives the you need to restart message. I can get into Verbose and Single user mode but I don't know of anything to try once I'm in either of those modes.I tried to boot system from single user mode by typing in the command sh /etc/rc but a long list of code just comes up and says something about the panic kernal which I believe is telling me that the same problem
I have trying a normal boot is keeping it from booting in single user mode also. I can do a hardware test(I've done this 3 times and everything shows to be OK). The main problem I have now is it won't boot normally and it won't boot from the install disc so I am truly stuck. I am at a loss as to what I should try next
since I can't even reinstall the software. Any help will be greatly
appreciated especially since my free phone help ended 2 days ago and
today was the first time I ever needed it!!
thanks, JasonThanks for replying, I have no peripherals attached, I am booting from the MacBook Tiger DVD one that came with the machine. I get the panic kernal with or without the disc installed. All hardware checks out fine in the three hardware checks I've done. I am almost positive the problem is stemming from the Apple updates performed since this is exactly when my problems began(trying to restart after the Apple updates). I just can't get the machine to boot from the disc no matter what I try so I can reinstall the operating system. I even tried using an external DVD-ROM once to see if it would boot from it but it did the exact same thing as when I try booting from the internal drive. Yes my files are backed up to an external hard drive. I've got no problem doing a Nuke and Repave if I must but since it won't boot from the disc I don't know how I can even do this. I know it is under warranty but since the hard ware checks OK it looks like there would be a way to get it running again without sending it in for repairs. However I am starting to think that's what I'm gonna have to do. I'm just glad I still have an old clamshell iBook to work with so I can access the internet to seek help. Thanks for your input, can you think of anything else I could try?

"you need to restart your system" message
Hi
I need some serious help here....It all started a while after installing 10.4.8. At first the system would just crash randomly, i.e. I'd get the spinning ball but I couldn't trace it back to any specific task, it was either when reading from my external drive, or listening to music or reading my mail.
First thing I did was to take out the 256 MB memory module I had together with my 1GB one, because I know that could cause some problems. But it did nothing. After a verify disk, I got an "Invalid sibling link" thing which I read was quite serious, so what I did was backed up everything and re-installed the whole system deleting the hard disk.
Soon after install (10.4.8 again) I had a huge problem with my external drive: it would hang for no apparent problem when I was trying to copy files from it back to the hard disk...Especially big chunks of files, like the Itunes music library. The thing is that sometimes if I tried again say three times in the end it would copy the files, so there was nothing corrupted with a single file. From a Verify disk thing my Lacie external drive was fine. I read a post about problems with the power adaptor so what I did was plug it into another socket and after that it seemed to be working ok. Now that I copied everything back, I get the "you need o restart your system" message, again for no apparent reason. I was trying to back up my Itunes library to DVD (seeing that Lacie drives are not that reliable after all), and when I got back to the MAC, the screen saver was on, when I moved the mouse, the screen went grey and the message came up. The DVD was fine, it was just waiting for another one. Same thing the second time. Another time I was just doing ordinary things...so I really can't understand what the problem is.
I ran hardware test: fine
Verify disk: fine
Repair disk permissions: ok
I disconnected all external peripherals: I got the "you need to restart" message after burning to Itunes anyway
I really don't know what to do to understand where the problem lies... ANYONE COULD HELP PLEASE?
I'm desperate.
Thanks

IMac G3 Kernel Panic - You need to restart your computer - HELP
I have an iMac G3 400Mhz slot-loading with 256MB 13GB running Mac OS 10.3.3. It was all along running Ok until I tried to do an OS updating recently. After update done, re-boot and I got this cyclic message "You need to restart your computer". Tried all methods like pressing CtrlOption+PR or Option during power-up but still the same. Now at a loss as I also cannot find my OS media installation CD anymore. Can anyone suggest how to remedy this? Worse case scenario, I don't mind clean re-load OS but need help in getting a copy of the Mac OS installation media.
Welcome To Discussions KevK!
How much space is available on the 13 GB Hard Drive?
What peripherals do you have connected to the iBook?
Are there any programs or applications, that are set to load at Startup?
You may find use helpful tips in this document Resolving Kernel Panics, authored by Dr Smoke.
As the iMac G3 400 MHZ's, original pre-installed OS was Mac OS 8.6, the original system discs, will not be much help.
You will need to purchase a new set of Panther discs, or a newer version of OS X, if you wish to upgrade.
With a larger Hard Drive, and additional RAM, that iMac, is capable of running Tiger 10.4.x.
Tiger is available for purchase at The Apple Store (U.S.).
Panther, is no longer available directly from the Apple Online Store, as Leopard 10.5.x, is the most up to date OS.
But, if you know what to look for, a Full Retail Version, of the Panther Install CDs, or a Full Retail Version, of the Tiger Install DVD, can be purchased, sometimes less expensively, at some online Apple retailers, Amazon, eBay, FastMac, HardCore Mac, AllMac, etc.
Be sure not to purchase grey, upgrade or machine specific CDs or DVDs.
Panther is only on CDs, not DVDs.
The discs should look exactly like the images in the above links, and not say Upgrade, CPU Drop-in DVD, or "This software is part of a hardware bundle purchase - not to be sold seperately." on them.

Once Panther 10.3.x is re-installed, you can use the 10.3.9 Combo Update, to upgrade to the final version.
If your Mac meets the Tiger System Requirements, you could also consider installing that, and then use the PPC 10.4.11 Combo Update, to upgrade to the current version.
Additionally, Tiger 10.4.x ships on a DVD, so if your Mac doesn’t have a built-in DVD-ROM player, you will have to use an alternative method of installation.

Keep getting message - You need to restart your computer - iMac freezes
My iMac freezes without notice, a dark screen comes over the monitor and the message "you need to restart your computer" appears.
This happens randomly and I have no idea what causes this. I thought perhaps it was just a loose power cord, as the cord does seem quite loose.
However, it happens after the machine has been running for some time. Before I have a chance to save my work, the computer tells me it has to shut down. It's not a consistent thing, so it's hard to know if it's the cord or not.
This also happened half way through watching a DVD. Nothing was touched or moved, so it wouldn't appear that this is being caused by a loose cord.
Can anyone shed some light on this problem? (I'm running Tiger on this machine with 700+ megs of RAM plus am using a Mac keyboard. Airport is installed but not in use.Hi there,
I would first make sure your Mac is or isn't on any list contained here: http://www.apple.com/support/exchange_repair/imac.html - you may in fact have a faulty power supply which is covered by repair extension through Apple.

My Imac recently gives a message "you need to restart your computer" after logging out and clicking "sleep". After a few seconds, gray screeen will roll down and give that messasge. I disconnected USB cable from my printer. Today, after turning it on, the log in screen showed then after 2 seconds the gray screen rolled down again and prompted "you need to restart the computer". I've read the apple communities about kernel panics but to no success. I have a 10.6.8, 2.7 ghz, 4GB. This is the error that showed which I reported to apple mutiple times already.

Plus it'll do a loud self test @ 3:00 in the morning & by this time, I pulled my baseball bat from under the bed and ready to smash some skulls in the office room thinking its a burglar.
But seriously it stop doing it.
This is a late reply but confirmed after 7 months.
Note: I shut down instead of sleep my Imac now because I hardly use it. -
"you need to restart your Imac"
I don't turn off my Imac that much and I keep getting this message after 5-6 days.
"you need to restart your computer. hold down the power button until it turns off"
It's very annoying while gaming since I die at bosses and lose my stuff etc....
I've sent in the report like 12 times last 2 months, someone have any idea what I can do?
The imac is not that old, maybe 5 months. Here's the crash report guys:

IMac G4 Freezes - Get message - You need to restart your computer.
I just posted this question in the G5 forum, I think. The Mac I am using is a G4 - the round 'lamp base' model' - so I will repost the question here.
Airport is installed but not in use.
I ran a Hardware Test on it and everything passed. I also completely reloaded all the software, erased the hard drive and did a complete reinstall, and the problem persists. It really is a nuisance and I have no idea what else to try.Hi AnnieGrace,
Sorry to hear of your woes. You are suffering from Kernel Panics (link) which could be caused by defective RAM, dodgy USB drivers or a software corruption etc etc.
I would advise disconnecting all external devices (except an Apple mouse and keyboard), removing any 3rd party RAM you've installed and the Airport card if you have one.
The best thing to do then is work though Dr Smoke's Kernel Panic Resolution Guide (link).
Do let us know how you get on. When I suffered them it was down to cheap RAM; other AD users have reported that old keyboards caused their problem.
regards

Your MBP may have had a kernel panic. If so, post the kernel panic per these instructions:
http://support.apple.com/kb/ht2546
An Apple Hardware Test may be useful:

Note that an error free AHT is not definitive.

My mac mini displays a green screen with 'mac os version not yet responded' and 'you need to restart your computer' as a warning message. Inspite of all my tries it doesnt run from the install dvd either.
Please help.Sounds like you may have a hardware problem since it won't read from DVD, and it is only a year and a half old. Hopefully all it is, is bad RAM*:

Hey guys, I got this Power Mac G4 (Dual 1.42GHz, 2GB Ram) from a neighbor about 3 weeks ago and it has been smooth sailing since I got it. However today my brother was using it, and got the rainbow loading mouse for a long time, nothing would open, I couldn't force quit any of the programs. So I just told him to hold the power button and restart. Well on reboot you hear the tone, then the Apple Logo appears then the screen shows up and says "You need to restart your computer..."
It happens no matter how many times I restart my computer. I've reset the RAM and the PRAM but it does the same thing. Any suggestions?Oh man, I'm so confused now. I don't know what could have happened.
I put in my Leopard Disc (that I got with my MBP) and booted it from disc, and it said I couldn't install 10.5 because 10.4 or later couldn't be found. That *****, could it be because I was running 10.5.4 and maybe it doesn't recognize it because 10.5.4 came out after this disc was made?
Also, since there are 3 hard drives, I don't know which one I have Leopard on, it's one of the 120gbs, but since this is handed down I don't know which drive is which and I don't know how to take the hard-drives out from the bracket, is there instructions for removing/installing hard drives.
Once again, I appreciate the support, you guys really are helping me!
EDIT: I talked to the guy who gave me this computer, he said that there was a problem with the battery, he said he replaced it about a year ago. Do you think that the battery could be a culprit in this problem?

Can static electricity harm my iMac?
I just moved into a new house and now have a new problem: static electricty. Almost everytime I come to sit at my desk and touch the computer, mouse or keyboard, I feel a small electric shock. Sometime, I even see a spark. Last night, while pluggi
