Early (2007) model extreme and speeds

I have an early Airport Extreme 2007 base station model. It is fully up to date with latest upgrades. The tech specs state it is 802.11a/b/g and "draft 802.11n", it states it is 2.4Ghz OR 5Ghz.
I am trying to improve my wireless download speeds as I am not getting anything close to what my provider states I should be getting.
My question is if I upgrade to the latest Airport Extreme Model would it improve my speeds at all? I suspect not.
When I ALT-Click on my wirles symbol it indicates I am using the 2.4Ghz band, range is not an issue here, so would forcing my current router to use 5ghz improve my speeds? And would that affect my other wirless devices in the houses, like iphone and ipads??

In general, using ethernet to connect through the router, you should expect, on average, about a 10-15% loss, due to the routing process when compared to directly connecting to a modem. Specifically, the NAT firewall in most routers slows things down, as would be expected.
If you locate the computer close to the wireless router, I would expect that wireless, on average, will display a 10-15% loss compared to ethernet. The signal has to be converted from ethernet to wireless in the router, then broadcast by the router, received by the computer, etc. There's going to be a bit of a loss with any conversion, and wireless security settings slow the signal as well. If you are using WPA2 Personal security, you have somewhat of a mixed blessing....the best security....but the slowest speed.
As far as maximum WiFi speed, the AirPort Extreme's WAN port will accept a Gigabit ethernet connection, or 1000 Mbps. The theoretical maximum speed of wireless is about 300 Mbps using 5 GHz wireless, so assuming you had a 300+ Mbps connection or higher from your service provider, I would expect to see something in the 250-270 Mbps range on wireless assuming a strong connection.
Overall, it sounds like your AirPort Extreme is doing just fine. If you need faster downloads over wireless, you will need to see if your provider offers a higher tier of service.
Things on your local network move much faster than your Internet connection speed. So, transferring a file from one device to another over your local network will be much faster than downloading a file over the Internet.

  • MBP early 2007 model having issues with volume and brightness control keys (f1-f9)

My MBP, early 2007 (came with tiger 10.4 in the box) and now running Snow Leopard 10.6.8 is having some weird problems with its f1-f9 keys.
For about 2 weeks now I have noticed that I cannot change the brightness and volume (especially) using these keys.
The layout of the keys on my MBP are as attached:
I tried to google the problem and tried a few diy fix-its, however nothing seems to work... and there seems to be no clear answer either. One day, during these two weeks it suddenly worked for about 2 minutes then stopped again and hasn't worked since.
Anyone experienced any similar problems? or have any idea what I can do to fix it?
As a last resort, I would eventually get a wireless keyboard to use with the MBP.

Thanks tjk, I tried that but it did not help. However over these last 2 days I noticed something more.
When I go to the keyboard setting, the 'use all f1 keys..." was off (as it was supposed to be) and then I click to turn it on and then off again and then the keys are ok and working perfectly till...
The next time I shut down and restart my computer, the key problem is back again. And again I do the same procedure above to fix it and so on...
Hmmm, it sounds like a corrupt preference.
Open Console and let's see if there's anything in there to help us.

  • Mac Mini (2007 model) Ethernet and 802.11N dead

Wow, talk about frustrating...my 13 month old 2007-model Mac Mini just crapped out with a couple of issues. The Ethernet networking reports the cable is unplugged, even though it's not, and the 802.11 wireless networking won't connect at N speeds. Of my four Macs, this was the only one without AppleCare, so no warranty help to be had.
Anyways, to troubleshoot the system, I've verified that the Ethernet cable I am using provides connectivity on another machine, and that other machines in the same workspace can connect to the 802.11n router via "n" speeds. So it's not anything external to the Mac Mini.
I also booted from a different OS X version via external USB drive, and the Ethernet and Wireless "n" still display the same symptoms. So it sounds like hardware, since a software glitch shouldn't appear with a different boot drive, right?
Verify disk and repair permissions also performed, with no anomalies noted.
System Profiler shows the Ethernet port is there, but in following troubleshooting "cable unplugged" errors tips in another thread I tried removing it from the networking pref pane, and re-adding it, but Ethernet doesn't show as an addable option anymore.
I am able to connect via 802.11g, so the machine's not totally dead connectivity-wise, but as home theater media server, I am sure going to miss the rapid file transfer rates of Ethernet or "n" wireless.
So, before I write this machine off as crippled, can anyone think of anything else I might try to get Ethernet working again? I suppose a USB-to-ethernet dongle would be better than Wireless-"g", but it's still less than ideal.
On another note, oddly, several of my programs started complaining about not being registered, which is what lead me to try permissions and disk verifications. Pretty strange.
    Any ideas appreciated.

Ah, you're right about the N not being supported. Color me stupid on that one...silly me assumed that since I'd only had it a year, and N was around on my other Macs purchased around then, that it was there, but of course the design was a year old already. I'll update the thread post to drop that part.
As for the cable, I sort of tried two other cables already. My actual setup is to run the Mini to a gigabit switch, then the switch runs a CAT6 cable 50' to the router. I used two different cables out of the switch, and then plugged the long run directly into the Mini. No go. I guess not a big issue to unplug the Mini and move it to another room. I'll give it a go, but take note that it's been working fine on this same cable/switch/router set-up for a year. Odd that it would suddenly change.
Thanks for the tips, I'll post back with results when I get home and can check it out.

  • Hard Drive upgrading for Early 2007 model MBPro

As the subject states, I'm looking to upgrade the HD for my MB-Pro 17" and I'm wondering what I need to know specifically about the HD. I'm looking at getting the Seagate Momentus 7200.4, which is a 7200rpm 500gb hard drive. The specs seem to say that it's a 2.75 in. HD where most are 2.5 correct? (Specs are posted below). I guess my basic question is, what will fit in my MBPro?
    Height (in/mm) 0.370/9.5
    Width (in/mm) 2.75/69.85
    Depth (in/mm) 3.951/100.35

You are miss reading the specs. Momentus HD's are 2.5 in high.
"Seagate delivers desktop-like performance with the Momentus 2.5-inch laptop hard drive. Seagate Momentus drives offer high-capacity storage while conserving battery life. Perpendicular recording technology provides increased hard-drive storage capacity—up to 500 GB on a 2.5-inch drive in both 7200-RPM and 5400-RPM models."

  • White MB early 2007 model BT problem

    Hello people.
I have one very unique problem with my Mac and I hope you'll be able to help me a little.
First of all, I'm not English nor American so forgive me if I have some grammar mistakes in this text.
I use BT and BT sharing for 3 different phones. Most of the time I use it to get and send files to my HTC phone.
    Bluetooth worked flawlesly until yesterday.
Now I can turn it on, see all of the BT options and the list of devices that were added to BT sharing.
When I send file from the phone to the Mac it receives the file and I'm able to see the dialog that asks me where should it store the file and I'm able to open the received file.
But I can neither send nor browse any of the phones from the Mac.
Oh I almost forgot to mention. I have SL 10.6.8 installed.
I don't know if any of you encountered any similar problem.
    Thank you in advance.
    Tony.

    Thanks for your reply ...
Your Macbook requires SO-DIMMs) of 667MHz DDR2 SDRAM, use ram that meets that spec and you'll be fine.>>
I had that ... 5300 DDR2, 667MHz, CL4 .... so it is not the whole thing .... On that site there is just the normal blahblah, nothing specific .... Bought that computer (decided for it), so I know the standard blahblah ....
I think that once you have some decent ram from a decent vendor that meets Apple's specs you'll not wish to go back to windows! >>
I have been a Mac user since I left the Atari ... so it would definitely not be 'going back to Windows' ....
dump the v4 beta. Use the current version 3.2.3 and I think you'll have no problems.>>
Maybe ... but if a beta software does not even work with the stuff of the developer ....
    thanks
    best

  • My macbook early 2007 model wont start up

I updated the efi after leopard installed successfully and now nothing works. it wont even chime or show apple boot logo. my fear is the logicboard is dead because of the software efi update.
any ideas on how to reset this? or fix this?
    thanks for in advance.
    Dwayne

Thanks very much for the help.
The computer has power and the cpu fan works and i can hear the HHD spin. just nothing i thought maybe it was there is no power or screen but it flickers when turned on so im thinking hardware failure caused by the efi update.
Im wondering if there is a way to DFU it like iphone devices? put it in a state where another pc or thumb drive could fix it providing the hardware is fine and the software is screwed up.
    thanks again.

  • New versus late 2007 models- big speed difference?

Can anyone comment on performance of the new '08 MacBook Pro models versus that of the late 2007 series? I'm considering the purchase of a refurbished machine. Is the performance bump that great? Are the new trackpad and gesture system compelling? Or should I just save a few hundred bucks and go for a refurbished model? Either way, I'll be getting Applecare.

from what ive seen (i own an early 2007 2.33 and many of my friends here on campus have the SR 2.2 or 2.4s)
the later screens are slightly brighter. the speed is a touch faster. the screen is placed slightly higher on the lid. and they seem so be attracted to the ground (it seems like everyone i know has dropped their machine, in the last week and a half 2 of my friends dropped their machines and there is a huge number of people who's corners are flat on their machines from dropping them... maybe they have a special gravity about them... maybe college students are careless).
the biggest difference is the fact you can have 4 gb of ram and they had upped the HD space on them (doest really matter at this point since you can put what ever size you want in that is the same format).
if the multi touch isnt something you want then the refurb mac should be fin e for you.

  • Brand new user of Extreme and express - surprising speed test results

    Dear All,
I had been using a linksys wireless router connected to a 20mps cable connection to send a wifi signal around my home. After a fair bit of research I upgraded to an airport extreme (wanted benefit of the gb ethernet ports and simultaneous dual band which the linksys did not have.)
So airport extreme set up nicely and speed test.net says I have download speeds of 19.23mbps on both my ipad and my macbook pro (2010). Signal does drop off in one part of the house so after a chat with the apple sales guy I also picked up an airport express to use as an extender. Using the excellent advice on this board mostly from Bob Timmons (found on a search) I was able to set express up and place in the part of the house where the signal didn't previosuly reach. It worked. So far so good. But, then an issue.
When the express is plugged in mbps on speed test drops from 19mbps to 4mbps on both the macbook pro and the ipad. Switch of the express reconnect the devices to wifi (I guess now they are focussing on the airport extreme) and speeds return back to the 19mbps!. Why would this be? And is there any way to fix it? The extra range is useful but not at the expense of all that speed.
    thanks
    Josh

    Setup looks correct.
Have you tried some different channel settings to see if another channel might work better?
For 5 GHz, you would want to choose one of the higher numbered channels 149, 153, 159, 161 and make sure that "enable wide channels" is checked in Wireless Options.
For 2.4 GHz the lower numbered channels are usually more crowded, so you might try one of the higher numbered channels for that band, maybe 9, 10, 11.
Apple routers seem to be very sensitive to interference. If you have a cordless phone there, try powering it off for 45-60 minutes and restarting the Extreme and Express to see if that makes any difference.
If you have time, you can scan to see what other networks are working around you with a utility like iStumbler.
If you do this, you may be surprised that "full bars" is not as much signal strength as you might have thought. The "bars" are there pretty much for show. They really don't tell you much about the real signal strength on the network and they don't tell you anything about noise on the network, which can drag down speeds.

  • Early 2007 Macbook...I need a lot of help and am computer illiterate

I have an early 2007 white MacBook 13". I have used it since I started college in 2007. I know I have accumulated a lot of photos and music on it, all of which I am sure contribute to it running incredibly slow. I am horrible at navigating these boards as I do not know how to word my questions in a way that even makes sense....so here are my questions (the simpler the answers the better!) (and I apologize in advance because they have all probably been answered):
    1. What can I do to make my computer run faster? I have read about RAM but I don't even understand what RAM is...is that what I need? Would an external hard drive help at all? I have tried deleting files and saving pictures onto USB drives and then deleting them. I also have repaired the disk utilities multiple times. None of that helped. I know there are tons of posts on here about that stuff...but they are so jumbled and I get so lost as to what I've done. Obviously I have read some posts because I did the disk utility thing.
    2. What is the highest OS X update my computer can handle? I read I can't have Mountain Lion due to my computer basically being out of date... but can I install Lion? And also, can I skip an update (for example go from Leopard to Lion)?
Again sorry for the repetition. I am hoping people on here are nice enough to just answer the questions without making me feel stupid for being repetitious. Any help would be appreciated.

Asking questions is good, don't feel bad.
Taking it backwards, your system cannot run 10.8 Mountain Lion.
It can support Lion, however, the performance may or may not be great. Lion requires 2GB of memory (AKA RAM), and many have found it needs 4GB to run well. While you can install 4GB on your late 2006 MacBook, the system will only access 3GB. This article talks about upgrading from 10.5 Leopard to 10.7 Lion. Otherwise, you'll need 10.6 Snow Leopard to access the App store. If you want Lion, call the Apple online store, which in the US is 800-MY-APPLE and buy a download code, which you'll use on the App store. Lion 10.7 is $29 and Snow Leopard 10.6  is $19.99.
Your system can easily support OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard. Call the Apple online store to order it. 10.6 requires a minimum of 1GB, and 2GB, or more, will give better performance.  OWC and Crucial are good sources for memory. This Apple note tells how to replace the memory, and this video shows you how to do that.
Now, question 1. Two keys to speed are RAM or memory and free disk space. Discussed RAM already. Disk space the general rule is that you need 10% or more of the space free for systems usage. When you've deleted files, you've probably emptied the trash. Some have found using OnyX has helped with performance (you want the Leopard version). With any disk maintenance program, you should have a good backup before using it.
See this FAQ on OS X performance.

  • Is iCloud as good to back up files when an iMac 2007 model does not have an external hard drive is this enough to find files and apps at another time

I have given my iMac 2007 model running mountain lion OSX 10.8.3 to a friend and she doesn't have an external hard drive to back up would using iCloud be as good to back up files pictures etc and can I find them again if lost please.

These are the iCloud storage options: http://www.apple.com/icloud/includes/lightbox-storage.html
    Also bear in mind that:
    1. restoring data over icloud takes time
    2. iCloud is not designed as a replacement to Time Machine.

  • Right, MacBook Pro 17" early 2011(Built March) and my new OCZ sata III 6G not working, when is Apple going to admit there is a problem with the Intel's 6 Series Chipset. In System Information it says "Link Speed: 6 Gigabit" which is sata III.

My MacBook Pro 17" early 2011(built March) and my new OCZ sata III 6G are not working together, when is Apple going to admit there is a problem with the Intel's 6 Series Chipset. In System Information it says "Link Speed: 6 Gigabit" which is sata III and in my MacBook Pro it does not work.
Now MacBook Pro 17" early 2011 built May onward do not have this problem it was fixed in the Intel's 6 Series Chipset. (So there is a problem). Cam I have my MacBook Pro fixed please.

After biting the bullet and ordering more RAM, my computer now is working a ton better. So that must have been the main issue. With 8 GB RAM, I can now even run Parallels fluidly (better than my work PC!) where before simple things like logging in to my MBP after reboot could take forever.
The place I went to had several other people getting RAM upgrades at the same time as me, so between this and other comments I've seen in discussions here and elsewhere on the Internets, I take it to mean that either Apple should bump up the base RAM on its new machines, and/or stop charging so much for additional RAM.
I refused to believe a Pro machine bought with Lion installed would come with too little RAM for light to medium usage, but it was apparently the case. I'll mark this as a correct answer and hope some other poor soul will come across this thread and be helped by it.

  • HT4260 I have an AirPort Extreme and a linksys router. What is the best way to get 6-8 wired connections with ac speeds?

I have an AirPort Extreme and a linksys router. What is the best way to get 6-8 wired connections with ac speeds?
    Appreciate your assistance.

The answer depends on whether the AirPort Extreme is your main router....or...the Linksys device is your main router.
In either case, the two devices must connect together using a wired Ethernet connection using CAT5e or CAT6 cabling.
Any version of the AirPort Extreme produced within the last 5 years will have Gigabit Ethernet ports. In order to get the same speeds from the Linksys router, it will also need to be Gigabit Ethernet capable.
If you need additional Ethernet ports, you will need to add a Gigabit Ethernet switch to either the AirPort Extreme or Linksys router.
It is assumed that your other devices connecting to the AirPort Extreme and Linksys router will also have Gigabit Ethernet capability.
Not sure why you mention "ac" speeds in your post. This relates to wireless connections, not wired.

  • Just got a Macbook Air and how come it's a early 2014 model?

I purchused a few days ago a Macbook Air, and it says it is an early 2014 model. I've looked on the website under tech specs I believe and there's a Macbook Air early 2015 (NOT the new Macbook that comes in three colors) So, how can that be? Thanks!!

The new MacBook Air was announced on March 9th and it may have been a few days later before it was available in retailer's stores. If you bought the old model at an Apple Store note that the Apple Stores have a 14 day return policy. You could return it and buy the newer model if you want. If you bought it elsewhere you will need to check their return policy.

I changed my wireless broadband to a landline-base DSL wifi and it works like a charm. Sun was the culprit even you fiddle with its router and disable firewall, it won't work.
try changing yours too and let me know how it goes.
