Early 2008 15" Macbook Pro acting very strange
So long story short, I bought a used early 2008 15" Macbook Pro and I keep having issues with it. I replaced the hard drive, replaced the thermal paste (after removing the old paste of course), cleaned her inside and out, updated software, firmware, & reset the pram/smc. None have totally solved the issues. I constantly have files from the hard drive disappear, then reappear whenever they want. The backlighting on the keyboard doesn't want to work if I am doing multiple things like, iTunes, TuneUp, & surfing the net, it just suddenly stops and if I try to activate by using the F6 on the keyboard I get a symbol of a circle with a line through it. The only way to get the keyboard to light up again is to reboot it. The hard drive I replaced with the old one is 500 gigs at 7200, 32mb cache. She also warms up rather quickly even though I used the artic silver thermal paste. I can never seem to get her temp below 45-55 Celsius. I even took apart the tiny internal fans and cleaned them thoroughly. I build desktop systems as well as repair laptops so I do know more than the average user but I am at a total loss here on what else could be the cause of all this strange behavior. I don't know what, if anything the previous owner did with it, which makes it even harder to figure out. Could this be a logic board or power supply issue? There are no other problems with power other then needing to replace the battery, but since it is plugged in everytime I use it, I really don't think this is the cause. Any suggestions are welcomed :-)

My old MacBook Pro crashes very strangely!
I have this old MacBook Pro laptop (2006 model), which I love so much and I hate to let it go (my first purchase from Apple...). Lately, though, it crashes very unexpectedly whenever I try to backup its hard disk drive contents using Carbon Copy Cloner or Time Machine (via either FireWire or USB). I have used various combinations of external disk drives / interfaces - but every time it proceeds up to a point and then the laptop shuts down as if it had no battery left (no messages or any other indications on-screen). I got the same symptom when upgrading to Snow Leopard earlier today - it took me several times starting up the system in order to complete the upgrade and subsequent software updates. This makes me suspicious with regards to some very specific piece of software on the internal disk drive that acts strangely whenever accessed.
Any ideas on what might be happening? I know that I am asking a really strange question here but I am running out of ideas (and - as said earlier - I really wouldn't like to leave this laptop behind...).Try removing Dropbox from your startup items. Go to System Preferences / Users & Groups. Click your name and choose login items. You can remove it there. That won't delete it from your machine, just stop it from loading automatically. Reboot and see if that helps.
I'm not sure what "store monitor" is. I don't think that's for the App store, as I don't have it running on my machine. See if that loads from Login items while you're in there. -
MacBook Pro acting very freaky...
My MacBook Pro is now acting much like a scratched CD or streaming video with poor bandwidth. It operated normally for a while, then slows to a crawl or freezes temporarily, then speeds back up. This process repeats constantly, regardless if I'm working in many heavy apps or just creating a new event in iCal. I would assume this is a hard drive issue, but Im on my 3rd hard drive in as many months, all replaced by Apple, all with vastly different serious flaws, so Im wondering if theres more to it...
Any input?
Ive also been having some other weird issues, such as my iPhoto library not loading 95% of the content in the library folder, as well as corrupting all my photos that were edited in iPhoto.
Also, I had some issues with Photoshop CS2 where the app would crash while loading or stop responding, prompting me to send an error report. Ultimately, I bought an upgrade to CS3 and it does the same thing, brand new program. Adobe refuses to believe its a software issue (I have my doubts to that as well).
One other issue is that (though this happens less frequently now after I deleted a number of the 3rd party small apps I had (Quicksilver, etc)) almost every program would randomly stop responding, also bringing up the prompt to report the error.
The best part about all of this is that, while I bought the computer in the US, Im currently living in Barcelona, Spain and can't seem to find anyone whom I trust enough to look at my computer without either ruining it or completely taking me for a money ride.
Any help would be great (and thanks for reading my novel here)Anytime I try to play certain songs on iTunes, it freezes the computer and I have to remove the power to turn it off. A very PC-like symptom.
Ive discovered a correlation between my issues, though:
Every time I am on a slow internet connection is when the issues begin.
1) When my first HD crashed I was on a poor wireless connection (but clean)
2) When my computer started drastically slowing down, it was at the exact same time as my internet company had serious issues with their bandwidth.
3) Everything else began as soon as I got here to Barcelona, where the internet is notoriously poor.
Im sure this is just extreme coincidence, but is it possible that this has some effect on the hardware? -
Premiere Pro Acting Very Strangely
I don't even begin to know how to search the interwebs for the issues I'm having, so I thought I'd post here and see if anyone else is having issues.
I run PP CS6.0.1 via Creative Cloud on a macpro with an NVIDIA Quadro4000 card. Firstly, when I installed the application via Creative Cloud's installer, the 'coreaudiod' bug showed up. Possibly a coincidence, but a strange one at that. Besides the stability issues and the occasional performance bugs, PP has now started doing something even stranger. Now when I launch the app, the startup screen (the dialogue box that displays after the splash screen) now shows up halfway off screen to the right of my monitor. Then if I actually open a project, it ALSO loads up halfway off screen. I can easily get everything back on full screen, but it's still a completely obnoxious problem.
Then, if I leave a render going or simply leave the app up and running over night, I'll come back into work the next morning and suddenly my desktop backgrounds have been completely removed and replaced by a generic gray system background.
I'm at a loss. Has anyone experienced ANY of these things? At least once a day, restart your computer.

My Late 2008 17" MacBook Pro isn't reinstalling.
I bought an (early 2008) 17" MacBook Pro from my brother about 1 week ago. I want to reinstall it. When I insert "Disc 1" in to the Superdrive I then click on "Install Mac OS X and Software Bundles". Then I click on restart. When I restarts it just shows an Logo and a spinning gear. I have waited over 1 hour and 30 minutes but no luck. Can Some one please help me out? Also since it doesn't reboot from the disc, when i purchase Mac OS X Snow Leopard will I have a problem installing it?
Restart the computer while holding the C key down. This way you'll start to the restore disk 1 instead of your hard drive.

My macbook pro running very slow
Hello,
Looking for help with my very slow running laptop. I ran an EtreCheck and can provide a full report. I ran Disk Utility, repaired permissions, slimmed down my Download folder, deleted a program recently installed - Kies, to link with my Android phone. I also have an iMac running 10.9.5.
Thanks for helping out... and Happy New Year to you all!
Mark

I tried unsuccesfully to upgrade the hard drive in my Early 2011 13" MacBook Pro to a 750GB 7200RPM hard drive. After several attempts with different hard drives I realized that the kernel panic that showed up was due to the lack of compatibility with the drives to the MacBook Pro. I had a Mid 2009 13" MacBook Pro that I did not have any issues with whatsoever. I sold that MacBook Pro and was able to upgrade to the brand new base model without any out of pocket cost. Upon purchase of the new 13" MBP I maxed out the RAM to the full 8GB. After 2 months of freezing, lockups, spinning rainbow wheels and having to force shutdown I tried one last ditch effort to see if a faster drive would help. After speaking with the Apple telephone reps and the Apple Store Genius Bar we discovered that Apple doesn't even offer the option of a 7200RPM drive on their website - a fact that I found quite disturbing. The concensus is that it is a power management issue that causes the incompatibility and the reason the drives are not offered on the 13" models. The problems I had were the end of the line for me. I just switched out that train wreck for the Early 2011 15" MacBook Pro base model. I got home and immediately installed the 750 GB 7200RPM Western Digital Scorpio Black hard drive and it was recognized within seconds. I'm back in business with gleeful abandon.
Sadly... they don't have all the answers. As someone who use to serve in the capacity (Mac Genius) it can definitely be a challenging position. You're "the voice" of Apple's service policy & procedures. Sounds like the person you spoke with got it wrong this time. It's definitely worth a follow up, because like I said, I've got a machine in my household that's living proof of compatibility between a 7200 RPM drive and 13" MBP (Early 2011).
Apple is very good about support documentation when there's incompatibility or unsupported configurations, the fact that there isn't one for 7200 RPM drives would tell me that the people/person you spoke with was misinformed.
I know I always appreciated when a customer made it known to me that I was wrong on something and supplied the right answer. I sure as heck don't have all the answers and if I can lead from my mistakes, well, I won't make them anymore. -
[Solved] Beachballs on late 2008 15" MacBook Pro MacBookPro5,1 with SATA II HD
Each time I upgraded hard disks in my late 2008 15" MacBook Pro ( MacBookPro5,1 ) I experienced increasing beachballs. The worst was my recent upgrade to a Seagate 1TB SSD hybrid drive.
I had lived with this pain for years and it appears a simple jumper change could have solved it. In my opinion all or at least some models of the late 2008 MacBook 15" Pros do not reliably support SATA II 3 Gbit/second.
See jumper diagram for Seagate drives. Note the diagram is showing drive laying hard disk circuit board side up. Other manufacturers may differ.
http://knowledge.seagate.com/article...language=en_US
From what I uderstand my late 2008 MacBook Pro was designed to support SATA II 3 Gbit/second with it's Nvidia chip set. In fact every model from late 2008 appears to have support for SATA II.
Then in early 2011 they added support for SATA III 6 Gbit/sec which the 1TB ST1000LM014 hybrid drive also supports. ( Hopefully they got SATA III right in their first 2011 model year. ) Unfortunately for me I do not think they got SATA II right in their first late 2008 model year.
I hope this may help someone avoid the pain I experienced,

<Edited By Host>Hi Mike,
I am not sure it is same issue if drive is not even recognized. But I would not give up hope. I know my late 2008 MacBookPro5,1 has this problem even though it was designed to work at SATA II 3 Gbit/second. It may be possible that your 2009 model has a similar issue.
If the jumper works for you, then please cut and paste your MacBook's Hardware Overview. It would be nice to see the Serial-ATA hardware too. Go to:

MacBook Pro suddenly very slow! PLEASE HELP!
Hi!
this is my ever post and im not much of an expert so please excuse if im slow or say sth stupid
so i have a macbook pro 2011 with an i7 which should be pretty fast. and it was until 5-6 months ago, where it just became terribly slow, i re-installed the OSX, but it didnt help.
my battery has also died completely last month, which i will have to change, and i will add an extra 4 GB RAM i think, but i doubt thats the only issue.
applications are ridiculuosly slow, i get the beachball of death all the time, please help.
i runa an EthreCheck, here is the result if it helps:
Thank you very much in advance!

Hi my macbook pro is very slow ,anyone can suggest me how can I make is fast?
Kappy's Personal Suggestions for OS X Maintenance
For disk repairs use Disk Utility. For situations DU cannot handle the best third-party utilities are: Disk Warrior; DW only fixes problems with the disk directory, but most disk problems are caused by directory corruption; Disk Warrior 4.x is now Intel Mac compatible. Drive Genius provides additional tools not found in Disk Warrior. Versions 1.5.1 and later are Intel Mac compatible.
OS X performs certain maintenance functions that are scheduled to occur on a daily, weekly, or monthly period. The maintenance scripts run in the early AM only if the computer is turned on 24/7 (no sleep.) If this isn't the case, then an excellent solution is to download and install a shareware utility such as Macaroni, JAW PseudoAnacron, or Anacron that will automate the maintenance activity regardless of whether the computer is turned off or asleep. Dependence upon third-party utilities to run the periodic maintenance scripts was significantly reduced since Tiger. These utilities have limited or no functionality with Snow Leopard or Lion and should not be installed.
OS X automatically defragments files less than 20 MBs in size, so unless you have a disk full of very large files there's little need for defragmenting the hard drive. As for virus protection there are few if any such animals affecting OS X. You can protect the computer easily using the freeware Open Source virus protection software ClamXAV. Personally I would avoid most commercial anti-virus software because of their potential for causing problems. For more about malware see Macintosh Virus Guide.
I would also recommend downloading a utility such as TinkerTool System, OnyX 2.4.3, or Cocktail 5.1.1 that you can use for periodic maintenance such as removing old log files and archives, clearing caches, etc.
For emergency repairs install the freeware utility Applejack. If you cannot start up in OS X, you may be able to start in single-user mode from which you can run Applejack to do a whole set of repair and maintenance routines from the command line. Note that AppleJack 1.5 is required for Leopard. AppleJack 1.6 is compatible with Snow Leopard. There is no confirmation that this version also works with Lion.
When you install any new system software or updates be sure to repair the hard drive and permissions beforehand. I also recommend booting into safe mode before doing system software updates.
Get an external Firewire drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
Carbon Copy Cloner
Data Backup
Deja Vu
SuperDuper!
SyncTwoFolders
Synk Pro
Synk Standard
Tri-Backup
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQs on maintenance, optimization, virus protection, and backup and restore.
Additional suggestions will be found in Mac Maintenance Quick Assist.
Referenced software can be found at CNet Downloads or MacUpdate.
Be sure you have an adequate amount of RAM installed for the number of applications you run concurrently. Be sure you leave a minimum of 10% of the hard drive's capacity as free space. -

Where can I buy a larger hard drive for my late 2008, 15" macbook pro? From reviewing questions and answers on the support community it would appear that having Apple remove the old and install the new hard drive is recommended. But how/where?
Welcome to Apple Support Communities
You can install the new hard disk yourself if you want to. You just need a 2'5" SATA II hard drive, which is compatible with your MacBook Pro. You can buy one at OWC > http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/hard-drives/2.5-Notebook/ You can filter hard drives by computer, so press a "Click to view all...", choose your computer in the sidebar and it will give you the compatible hard drives.
There are different brands for the MacBook Pro. The most recommended are HGST and Seagate, which have good reputation. A 7200 rpm hard drive will give you extra performance -
Early 2011 2GHz Macbook pro distorted blue screen then wont boot, 3 times in last 2 weeks
I have an early 2011, 2GHz macbook pro (15' model with ati radeon graphics). It was running fine for the last two years. Over the last couple of weeks, following things happen:
1. I was running on bootcamp windows, browsing and some flash content was open, suddenly distorted blue stripes appear and it froze. Force shut down using power button, turn on again and it wont boot on windows or mac, or recovery partition or from the dvd. Tried for about 4 hours, after nvram, pram reset, it was able to safe boot, then run disk utility to verify and repair the disk, it said that there were problems with hard drive and fixed, then booted normally.
2. I thought that the problem might be because I was on windows, so took a back up of the windows drive, erased it and installed windows 8 using bootcamp. It ran well for an week. After that, once I connected it with the tv using HDMI to watch a video, after I disconnected it, the screen was garbled over the windows start screen, but I was able to command restart normally. After restart, it wont boot to windows or mac.
3. After several hours of trying, i was able to boot using the dvd this time, it said it 'can not install mac on the hard drive', erased the hard drive and it was able to install the os (snow leopard). After completing install, logged in to app store to download previously purchased mountain lion. Then ran it to upgrade the os, after the upgrade was completed, at the point when it prompts for apple id and password to set up icloud, it again froze with distorted blue screen. Shut down forcefully. Then turn on again and it wont boot. After the white screen and the sound, it shows the apple logo and spinning wheel for a while, then a bright white screen and nothing happens.
Can anybody help reading the symptoms?I have the Early 2011 2GHz Macbook Pro and I have the same problem too.
I switched out the logicboard a month ago and today the graphics just went distorted.
Any solutions? Now I'm thinking it is the Graphics Card. -
my 3 year-old macbook pro is very slow. I have run disk utility and virus scan with no improvement. The "beach ball" will spin for minutes at a time when opening, closing or changing windows. Apple Store looked at it a few months ago with no help. What can I do?
Under CPU: 3.5% user; 5% system; 91% idle; 441 threads; 90 processes.
Under System: out of 2GB - 54.7MB free; 530MB wired; 603MB active; 862MB inactive; 1.95GB used.
Is too much of the system memory tied up? If so, what can I do to free some up?

What are System.in/out/err for servlets?
While porting some command-line code to a servlet I ran into a problem where the servlet would hang trying to read from System.in. I will obviously need to fix that, but it got me wondering, what are System.in, System.out, and System.err for servlets
