Early 2008 17 inch MacBook Pro crashing/rebooting

I have an early 2008 17 inch MacBook Pro that has recently started acting wonky.
At times, the display either flickers or is "pixelated" (but not always), and also will just randomly crash and reboot with the warning coming up that the system was restarted because of a problem.
Sometimes, it reboots again while rebooting and eventually it starts up and I can get back to the desktop.
I've run the disk utility and it didn't found any problems.
Any thoughts as to what the problem might be?
Is this likely a hardware or software problem?
It was recently upgraded to Mountain Lion, but that was about a month ago and was working fine before the latest problems started.
Beginning to think it may be time for a new macbook.
I've include a copy of the latest panic report below if that provides any help.
From what I see and the way the MBPro has been behaving, I'm guessing it's a graphics issue, but can't tell for sure.
I'm going to try and run the Apple hardware test on it tonight.
Thanks,
Ray

I have a MAcBook pro 17 2008 sold in July 2008. I had few problem : panic kernel, bad image, bar during boot and Damages Folder in root after. I had run standard Hardware test with some time this result 4VDC/1/40000003 VideoController.
So I gave a visit to a Genius Bar. I showed a picture of a screen capture with the test result : "nothing pertinent, we have now so fancy hardware test , and we run it three times". so : "your computer is fine, we have reinstalled 10.7.5. This might be a third party software." Thank you for your visit !
So the computer is runing fine now but it's empty I am just intalling flash. I had a movie on DVD and one on You tube yesterday night, nothing appended.
I am runing the standard Hardware test included with the installation CD I have a 4VDC/1/40000003 VideoController at each time.
I did not what to do. Genius Bar have the mother board instock 550$
I will swap the man HD with all my application and data on 10.7.5 ( I have two WD Black Scorpion 500G in good shape)
Can I put off Nvidia drivers ?

• Early 2011 15-inch MacBook pro running a tad bit slow

Had it for a while now and he's been treating me well, but all of a sudden the performance has started going a little wonky. Sometimes when I'm working, it'll just go black-screen (and stop playing music if I was playing any before) and then the login screen will show up, or it'll go to full on sleep where sometimes it'll respond if I press Enter a couple of times, but other times i'll have to close the clamshell and reopen it to be taken back to the login screen. Also, I get the rainbow pinwheel more often than I used to, for longer than I used to, for simple tasks like using Safari or opening Word or trying to access a menu or quit an app. Some apps will take a considerable time to open, and the icon just keeps a-bouncing in the dock until 20 years later when the app eventually opens. I've taken him into the Apple store and had them reset the SMC as that seemed to be the main problem all signs were pointing to. But the symptoms still remain, so I'm hoping I can find some help here from you all. I'm a broke college kid, so I'm not trying to drop huge bucks, but any little bit of info is greatly appreciated.

That's a hardware kernel panic for certain and it does look as if it was caused by a faulty GPU.
The only thing that I can really recommend is printing out the kernel panic and taking it and your machine into your local Apple Store/AASP. They can diagnose the problem and give you an estimate for repair (unless you purchased the extended AppleCare Protection Plan - in which case the repair should be free).
Sorry,

• Late 2008 15 inch Macbook Pro will not detect external projector

I have a Toshiba projector that I am trying to hook up to my Macbook Pro for a presentation tomorrow. The computer will not detect the display. I'm using a DVI cable connected to the Mini Display Port. I know I've got the projector on the right input as my white Macbook with mini DVI will detect it but not display it properly (all green).
I've tried shutting down and disconnecting and everything. I need this to work asap.

Have you checked the screensaver and power settings, sleep display etc in the System Preferences?
You can throw this mega cocktail at it, see if it cleans up your problem.
Download the free OnyX here
http://www.titanium.free.fr/
Run ALL the maintainence and cleaning aspects, , especially the caches, you can cancel the reboot in between.
Finially run the Verify > Preference file check/repair and then reboot.
This should clean out all your caches and whatnot.
Then look at this support article about resetting the SMC/PRAM

• 2012 13 inch MacBook Pro crashes (black screen) on Windows 7

Hi, I am running Windows 7 (bootcamp obviously) and out of the blue my screen went black, my only option was to make a hard reset. I can then run Windows on Safe Mode, and I found out that if I turn off the graphics card (HD 4000) then Windows will run OK in "normal" mode.
That happened a month ago, and the only thing I could think of was re-installing Windows via Bootcamp. Windows ran flawless until a couple of days ago where the black screen appeared again and the only way I managed to get into Windows again was either on Safe Mode or in normal mode (with the graphics drivers unabled).
Please help me, I really need to run Windows for work and this is really bothering me.

How to Reset NVRAM on your Mac - Apple Support
"Don't think it's the inverter since that helps turn on the backlight on."
Actually the inverter bumps the 5 V. ? from the logic board and bumps it up to high voltage to drive the back light.
https://www.ifixit.com/Answers/View/51132/MacBook+inverter+board...how+to+test
Checks you could try would be to check the input voltage to the inverter board. Check the inverter cable for shorts. These are easily seen on close inspection. If there is a short it could have taken out the tiny fuse that's on the logic board. Or the inverter board itself could be bad. Sub board repairs would require known good replacements. I have identified that fuse but on an earlier model and repaired it after replacing the inverter cable but no tech would go that far.

I'd like to transfer all data to the new MacBook as seamless as possible. Don't want to reinstall software. Using Migration Assistant in past was successful, but I always used Firewire or Ethernet.
Apple's Thunderbolt cable is too expensive at $49. Wifi is way too slow. (Transfering my 500GBs was going to take over 100 hours.) Do I need to get a Thunderbolt-to-Gigabit Ethernet adapter and cable? That's about the same price as the Thunderbolt cable. Is transfer over USB 2 possible? Would I be better off restoring from my Carbon Copy Clone on my USB 2 external drive?
I do not use Time Machine.

Stephen Coles wrote:... Do I need to get a Thunderbolt-to-Gigabit Ethernet adapter and cable?
That's what I used, although I already had the ethernet cable. Just directly connected both machines (after turning off Airport on the old one), no router or anything else, and ran Migration Assistant on both ends. Transfered a user account with about 30Gb data, nothing else.

• Using an early 2011 15 inch macbook pro to watch a rented dvd. the screen displayed a skipping over damaged section message, then the dvd froze. first unable to eject the dvd, now it can't be inserted. Hardware prblm? reset the superdrive?

I was viewing a rented dvd when a "skipping damaged area" message was shown and then the dvd froze. At first I was unable to eject the dvd with the eject botton though the superdrive made "ejecting" noises, and followed the cue "finder using dvd" and ejected it. Now the drive will not accept any dvds. Does this sound like a hardaware problem, or is it possible that some sort of "reset" needs to take place?

Before wasting your time heading to your local Apple Store, try resetting your SMC. It doesn't work all the time, but sometimes it's just the thing to save you time.

• Can I buy a replacement battery for my 13 inch Macbook Pro from Apple?

The battery for my Early 2011 13-inch Macbook Pro is now completely dead, no longer even recognized by my computer. Anyone know if I take it into the apple store if they can replace it for me? I didn't see a battery in the Apple Store that would work, but would they have one there?

Why don't you call them up & ask??????

• This Question is at least 2.5 years old. But still an issue. I have an early 2008 and mid 2010 13 inch macbook pro running iTunes 10.7. Itunes on both machines doesn't recognize blank cds or allow me to import from a music cd when I insert it.

iTunes does not use the .xml it uses the .itl
If you are sure your old library file migrated across (does the file size and modification dates suggest it has?) start iTunes while holding down the option/alt key and guide it to the .itl file to get it to use that one.

• What is the largest hard drive 15-inch macbook pro late 2008

I have a 300gig one but it's nearly full with stuff that isn't great being somewhere else (aperture library, iPhoto library, apps).
What's the largest internal hard drive I can instal on my 15-inch MacBook Pro (late 2008)?

1.0TB.

• Macbook Pro crashes and needs reboot 10.8.1

Hi all,
Having an odd issue. Since upgrading to OS X 10.8 and now running 10.8.1 my MacBook Pro crashes intermitently. The operating system becomes unresponsive and the only thing I can do is move the mouse and nothing else. The only solution is to hold the power button down.
I did have a few kernal panics before upgrading to 10.8.1. Not had one for a while now.
I have run an Apple Hardware Test and I have run a Memtest and everything has reported no issues.
I have looked at the Console logs but can't see anything obvious (not really sure what to look for). Does anyone have any ideas what the issue could be?
THanks in advance.
Tom

It crashed again today. Heres the log

• Macbook pro crashed a week ago, now it's working fine, is it the hard drive that's failing?

First, it's a mid-2009 13 inch Macbook Pro, 160gb, right now 14 gb free, battery was replaced with new one 4 months ago so it's not that. A week ago, my macbook just stopped responding. It froze, and when I shut it down manually and then rebooted, it kept freezing as soon as I opened an app. Usually I woulld try to open either Chrome or MS Word. It just color-wheeled everything. Even Finder. I couldn't do anything at all, which was horrible cause I neeeded to turn in a homework final, and i couldn't even copy it to an external memory. I reset the pram, went in through safe mode, single-user mode, repaired the disk with fsck, etc. Nothing was working. Finally, by some miracle, I logged in through safe mode, it let me copy the file I needed (from MS Word if it matters) into the memory, and then I just shut it down. I figured it was the hard drive finally giving up on me, so I just left it. Now, a week later, decided to turn it on to see if it worked, and lo and behold, it does. I'm typing this on it as it is. Still, I'm scared it's gonna crash again, so I'm looking for a new hard drive (and back-up drive) to install it before that happens. Before though, I want to make sure its the hard drive that's the problem. Has anyone had anything similar happen? What was the problem?

160 gb is a small drive and yours is pretty full, I would get a external drive and back up ASAP, so if it does fail you still have your data. When a drive gets that full it has to do a lot off work searching. It could also be a logic board problem.
Get a back up dive, with drives it's not if it will, but rather when it will fail.
Bring it in and have it evaliuted, the diagnosis is free.

• 15 inch MacBook Pro non-retina or with Retina?

Hello everyone
I have the new iMac and got it in early December to replace my old 2008 MacBook Pro. I sold that one and now have decided to get a new 15 inch MacBook Pro. But I am stuck on whitch one to buy.
Here are the things that I will do with this computer
Use all of the pre-loaded apps
Download more from the Mac App Store
Import pictures from my Nikion Camera, 64GB Black iPhone 5, 64GB Black iPad 4 into iPhoto and edit them in Aperture
Use iPhoto, iMovie, Garageband
Use Pages, Keynote, Numbers
Here's the configuration I would buy if I get the non-retina model
$1799 model
4GB RAM
256GB SSD
1680X1050 Glossy display
2.3GHz Quad-Core i7
Here's the configuration I would buy if I get the retina model
$2199 model standard configuration
OR if there are any refurbished $2799 models from Apple's refurbished store
Please let me know what you all think!
Thanks for helping me!!!

Personally, I would go for the non-retina display, and here are my reasons:
1. It's far cheaper, and you're getting a very similar product.
2. Yes, the Retina display comes with 8GB of RAM, and from what I know, with the newest models you can put 16GBs of RAM in them. If you ever needed more RAM, you can't replace it on your retina display model. However, you can go out and buy 8GBs of good RAM for $50, and replace the non-retina display RAM without voiding your warranty.
3. If you ever want to upgrade your SSD, or switch over to a massive hard drive for the sake of storage capacity over speed, you can also do so without voiding your warranty on the non-retina display.
Both of the displays are gorgeous, and while it's true that Retina display is prettier, the non-retina display is quite nice. Furthermore, if you ever need to do anything at all in your computer, you're out of luck with the Retina display, as the case is glued together. I personally have an old '09 MBP, before retina display, and the display is perfectly fine. You'll save a lot more money getting the non-retina display, and it will probably last you longer, seeing as SSD's tend to be more reliable than flash storage. True, they're the same thing, SSD's are alined in an array and are made for speed and reliability. If I were you, I'd go for the non-retina display.

• Picture Included. Mid 2012 13 inch Macbook Pro green/purple lines on screen. Freezes. Sometimes 3 beeps.

Alright I have a Mid 2012 13 inch Macbook Pro purchased in June 2012. For about the last month, I have this issue where as I am using it random colored lines will show up on the screen (lines usually green, purple, but occasionally the issue occurs while booting and lines are black on white background). As soon as the lines appear, everything freezes. Sometimes the computer automatically reboots. Other times, it will just turn off and start beeping 3 times in a row. AT first, I thought this may be a video card error because it happened a lot when I was watching videos. However, it also happens randomly when I am just using safari/chrome with no other programs runnings. The most annoying part of this issue is that it is completely random. Computer won't act up for maybe 2 days straight during all activities (videos, surfing the web, etc). Then I will have a day where the problem is consistent.
Also, although I think this is just a correlation, all problems started after upgrading to Yosemite.
Picture below:
Does anyone else with a Macbook Pro (especially 2012) have this issue? These two discussions seem to be describing this very situation:
Screen froze, purple lines, three beeps. Help!
Macbook Pro screen glitches, 3 beeps, NOT THE RAM

thanks alex. I'm going to the genius bar later this week for them to get a look at the issue.
in the meantime, do you have any idea why the problem occurs when I apply a little pressure to the bottom of the computer (under the command screen). here is a video of the situation: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=88C34bHZAd8&feature=youtu.be
also, i found this thread describing my exact situation: Field of vertical lines all over Macbook Pro screen? (+ freezes, beeps)
do you have any idea of a solution from reading that?

• I have a 13 inch MacBook Pro (2009) & the "White Screen of Death" is present. Need help?

I have a 13 inch MacBook Pro (2009). Recently I bought an extended hard drive because I had used up the memory on my iDisk. As I was running the Time Machine back up on my new extended drive, the battery on my Pro ran out causing it to shut down. Once I hooked up my Pro to the power cord & logged in, the "White Screen of Death" appeared on the home display. Obviously the battery still works, my phone is able to charge along with the extended drive, I am able to adjust the lighting on my keyboard along with adjusting the brightness on my screen, but the "White Screen" remains. I need help in determining the cause of this issue & the steps I'll need to take in order to resolve this. I love my Pro, all my documents, photos & music are on it & the last thing I want to do is kill my wallet by buying a new Pro. So could someone on here please help me? It would be greatly appreciated & I thank you in advance!

Take each of these steps that you haven't already tried. Stop when the problem is resolved.
Step 1
The first step in dealing with a boot failure is to secure your data. If you want to preserve the contents of the startup drive, and you don't already have at least one current backup, you must try to back up now, before you do anything else. It may or may not be possible. If you don't care about the data that has changed since your last backup, you can skip this step.
There are several ways to back up a Mac that is unable to boot. You need an external hard drive to hold the backup data.
a. Boot into the Recovery partition, or from a local Time Machine backup volume (option key at startup.) When the OS X Utilities screen appears, launch Disk Utility and follow the instructions in this support article, under “Instructions for backing up to an external hard disk via Disk Utility.”
b. If you have access to a working Mac, and both it and the non-working Mac have FireWire or Thunderbolt ports, boot the non-working Mac in target disk mode. Use the working Mac to copy the data to another drive. This technique won't work with USB, Ethernet, Wi-Fi, or Bluetooth.
c. If the internal drive of the non-working Mac is user-replaceable, remove it and mount it in an external enclosure or drive dock. Use another Mac to copy the data.
Step 2
Press and hold the power button until the power shuts off. Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed to boot, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Use a different keyboard and/or mouse, if those devices are wired. If you can boot now, one of the devices you disconnected, or a combination of them, is causing the problem. Finding out which one is a process of elimination.
If you've booted from an external storage device, make sure that your internal boot volume is selected in the Startup Disk pane of System Preferences.
Step 3
Boot in safe mode. Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Post for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
When you boot in safe mode, it's normal to see a dark gray progress bar on a light gray background. If the progress bar gets stuck for more than a few minutes, or if the system shuts down automatically while the progress bar is displayed, your boot volume is damaged and the drive is probably malfunctioning. In that case, go to step 5.
If you can boot and log in now, empty the Trash, and then open the Finder Info window on your boot volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name.) Check that you have at least 9 GB of available space, as shown in the window. If you don't, copy as many files as necessary to another volume (not another folder on the same volume) and delete the originals. Deletion isn't complete until you empty the Trash again. Do this until the available space is more than 9 GB. Then reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode.)
If the boot process hangs again, the problem is likely caused by a third-party system modification that you installed. Post for further instructions.
Step 4
Sometimes a boot failure can be resolved by resetting the NVRAM.
Step 5
Launch Disk Utility in Recovery mode (see Step 1.) Select your startup volume, then run Repair Disk. If any problems are found, repeat until clear. If Disk Utility reports that the volume can't be repaired, the drive has malfunctioned and should be replaced. You might choose to tolerate one such malfunction in the life of the drive. In that case, erase the volume and restore from a backup. If the same thing ever happens again, replace the drive immediately.
This is one of the rare situations in which you should also run Repair Permissions, ignoring the false warnings it may produce. Look for the line "Permissions repair complete" at the end of the output. Then reboot as usual.
Step 6
Reinstall the OS. If your Mac was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you’ll need the Apple ID and password you used to upgrade.
Step 7
Repeat step 6, but this time erase the boot volume in Disk Utility before installing. The system should automatically reboot into the Setup Assistant. Follow the prompts to transfer your data from a Time Machine or other backup.
Step 8
This step applies only to a Mac Pro tower, not to any other model. A dead logic-board battery can cause a gray screen at boot. Typically the boot failure will be preceded by loss of the startup disk and system clock settings. See the user manual for replacement instructions.
Step 9
If you get this far, you're probably dealing with a hardware fault. Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store to have the machine tested.
