Early 2008 still worth it?
I'm currently thinking about buying a 24'' early 2008 iMac model. It has a 320gb hd, 4gb of ram, and is has a 2.8 GHz processor. I'm curious if it's really worth it? It clocks in at $965 with shipping, and it's used, but I'd end up getting AppleCare for it. I know the refurbed ones from the Apple Store are a bit over $1000 with shipping, and that's something I really don't want to get into. I was honestly also considering the same spec'd model, but with a 20'', but a friend of mine talked me out of it. Any ideas on this, folks?
Wanting to keep it for 5+ years or so.
refurbed ones from the Apple Store are a bit over $1000 with shipping
Shipping is free on Mac purchases from the online Apple Store.
If it's used, and being purchased from an individual seller, I would only buy it if all the original discs are included and if I can return it if it is not in satisfactory (as described) condition. Also, if it has been more than one year since originally purchased, you will not be able to buy AppleCare for it. And I'm not sure if a second-hand owner can buy AppleCare for it, even if it has been less than one-year since purchase (you should check into that).
I don't know what your performance needs are, but you can get the current get 21.5-inch iMac for $999 on the refurb page.

My early 2008 Mac Pro (2 x 2.8 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon, 24 GB 800 MHz DDR2 FB-DIMM) is still experiencing frequent Kernel Panic freezing.
Some days I can go the whole day without one, other days I will experience many, some while using the computer, some after waking it up, some after restarting from one.... its a mess.
I thought it might be RAM related. So I ran different tests on all the chips, found nothing, no errors reported after overnight looping tests. I added more RAM (I ordered 4 2Gb chips so I'd have a total of 16Gb, they sent me 4Gb cards, so now I have 24Gb. I have heard its best to have all cards of the same size, so I ran it with just the new 4Gb cards giving it 16Gb, it still crashed.) I tested the new ram alone, in 2 card groups, in different configurations on the RAM boards, nada.
Maybe it's the graphics card? But I get no weird graphics artifacts (which I did used to experience with my old iMac before it died).
The fans seem to run normally, not too fast or too loud. Sometimes after repeated crashes I'll open up the computer and blow it out with compressed air. That does seem to help, but not always. It's not real dusty, though there is a fine layer of dust that seems to be stuck/ coat the boards.
In Activity Monitor, the kernel_task hovers at about 1.22 Gb of RAM.
I can not iron down what the problem stems from. Nothing seems to alleviate the crashing, which has become more and more frequent it seems...
Anyone have any suggestions? I have tried using Hardware Test using the original OS disks. I have tried Memtest in Terminal. All to no avail. Nothing turned up any errors. I am not sure what to do next besides call for an Exorcism.
Please help! They keep happening. In the time it took to select the latest one, copy and paste it here, and then write this, a dozen more were logged... Is that normal??

Upgrading Mac Pro 3.1 (early 2008) worth it ?
Hi
I was wondering if it´s still worth to upgrade my mac pro 3.1 (early 2008) ..... or I should sell it and buy maybe the mac pro 2010 or anything like that...
my system is
2,8 Ghz 8-Core
8 gb 800 Mhz DDR2 ram
Ati radeon 2600 (i think it slows everything down.... )
system HD: WD Velocyraptor 10000kb/s (320 GB)
second HD: WD hd 7200kb/s (1 TB)
third HD: WD hd (it´s slow, the one that apple built in mac pro)
SNOW LEOPARD 10.6.8
to be honest I think my mac is too slow... especially loading from HD or something takes time and the beachball appears often... I mainly work with Logic and its not really nice.... bad performance... lags and so on...
I really need another video card.... in logic pro everything lags and I think its because of the slow video card...... also I think my RAM is too slow (800mhz)
and I thinking about getting a SSD Samsung HD and remove the slow third HD apple built in...
what do you think? this would be not cheap upgrade for me.... and I think about selling my mac pro 2008 and getting a newer one... from 2010 or anything like that...
thank you guys!Open the side door.
If your software required PowerPC / Rosetta then Lion is not for you.
I would ask in Logic Community what they recommend.
I think you can improve your system, disk drives are something you need no matter what and you wouldn't be using disks from 2007. I would think 16GB RAM would make more sense as next step and then play safe with Apple ATI 5x70 for $249.
Hopefull you have backups but yes, rotate out and clone onto new drives.

I have Garageband version 4.1.2 (248.7) installed on my early 2008 IMAC 10.5.8. I have never upgraded. If I upgrade my operating system to the next level (10.6?) will my GB version still work? I have a LOT of projects involved and hope they will transfer. Can I (and should I) upgrade GB at the same time and how far should I go with that without causing a problem with my projects? What would I gain if I upgrade GB? Thanks!

my copy of 4.1.2 appears to work under 10.6.8, though i have not done extensive tests

they should

v4 is pretty lonh in the tooth now, and GB only costs $15, so I'd think it's a good idea
Nancyfromeasttexas wrote:

the only version you can buy new is v6,a nd it should open older projects without issue ... however you could keep 4 around:

Early 2008 Mac Pro - worth bothering with?
Hi,
Someone in my building threw out an early 2008 Mac Pro with no hard drives.
I put in a spare that I have lying around and it seems ok -- but a bit slow. I'm now in the process of installing Mavericks on it.
I'm curious if this computer is worth bothering with? If so, what are some essential upgrades that would make this hum? I'm assuming an SSD? Should I bother finding extra ram for it (it has 4gb now).
What would be some good uses -- I already have an apple tv and a htpc in the living room.. I suppose I can use it in the bedroom? Can this be a functioning secondary computer for my wife who doesn't game but does use iPhoto/Word/Netflix etc? And if so what should I add?
Thanks everyone for your help!alphaace wrote:
If my wife just watches netflix/browser/word etc --- no games -- but does do a heavy bit of photo editing -- should I upgrade the gpus?
And if so, what would everyone recommend?
Also, I need to buy some hard drive caddies (only one left in it) -- however, I need a converter to put in a ssd right (as they are 2.5")? Any recommendations on those?
I have been able to find Mac Pro drive caddies on eBay. Here's one that would get you a set of 4:http://www.ebay.com/itm/Apple-Mac-Pro-Hard-Drive-Sled-Caddy-Complete-Set-1-4-Mac -Pro-2006-2008-/111386524693?pt=US_Drive_Bay_Caddies&hash=item19ef277c15. The screws appear to all be there.
In terms of adapters, this one was in my 2006 Mac Pro when I got it, and it seemed to work fine, although I didn't keep it in there very long:
http://www.amazon.com/Icy-Dock-EZConvert-2-5-Inch-Converter/dp/B002Z2QDNE
OWC sells a couple of 2.5" drive adapters also.
I wouldn't worry about upgrading the graphics until your wife has had a chance to do some photo editing on it. You may not need to upgrade the card for a while, if ever. -
I have an early 2008 and mid 2010 13 inch macbook pro running iTunes 10.7. Itunes on both machines doesn't recognize blank cds or allow me to import from a music cd when I insert it.
iTunes does not use the .xml it uses the .itl
If you are sure your old library file migrated across (does the file size and modification dates suggest it has?) start iTunes while holding down the option/alt key and guide it to the .itl file to get it to use that one. -
I am writting to ask for help with my old version MacBook Pro early 2008 with Kernel Panic 9C2028 10.5.2 Darwin 9.2.1. My MacBook Pro freezes up with a panic and have to shut it down by pressing and holding the power button. When I restard the comp it keep showing the same Kernel Panic. Will any body outthere heppe me get out this freezes up panic kernel Darwin 9.2.1.
Thanks YouLooks like a RAM failure or maybe another hardware failure.
Can you take out the battery and with the charger connected start up? Same failure?
Have you tried the SMC reset and PRAM reset? do both twice. -
Installing vista 64 on a MacBook Pro (early 2008)
I hope this will save someone some time.
Leopard is the world’s most advanced operating system.
So advanced, it even lets you run Windows if there’s a PC
application you need to use. Just get a copy of Windows
and start up Boot Camp, now included with Leopard. Setup
is simple and straightforward — just as you’d expect with a
Mac.
Marketing hype.
Set up is nowhere as simple as with a DIY intel motherboard, a Dell or HP, Asus ...
If you follow the "instructions" trying to get vista64 up on a macbook pro you'll spend literally hours and end up with a half working system. I have a retail copy of Leopard 10.5, installing the drivers from that resulted in non functional:
802.11
Ethernet
Audio
No Graphics acceleration
No iSight
If you are installing vista on a modern computer (a core 2 duo processor and better) then you really want to install vista 64, it runs faster and it addresses more ram. I'm sure the situation for vista32 is better, I was just astounded at the virtual lack of support for 64 bit.
The boot camp fiasco was install vista, install the drivers from the leopard disk and try to install the 2.1 boot camp update. Installing vista from the os x boot camp (ie put the vista media in the drive, run boot camp and in theory Windows installs) resulted in a freeze on restart, a black screen with a frozen underbar cursor.
So I just booted from the vista dvd (64 bit media with sp1) worked like a charm. To do this hold the option key down as the machine is restarting, and choose the vista dvd as the boot disk in the boot picker. That worked nicely. Another point is that boot camp will make a partition for you, but it will be a DOS FAT-32 partition. This makes a certain amount of sense since it allows both Vista and OS X to read and write the windows partition, however vista will probably be happier with an ntfs partition, and in the vista installer you can select this option and reformat the partition.
Vista installed with no hitches (though it will restart a few times, it might be worth setting the default boot volume to the vestigial vista install using the OS X sys prefs after the first restart to avoid needing to stand over the install to hit the option key. Once vista was up I made the next boot camp discovery.
The BC 2.1 update will not run on my install. This seems like a very common thing for the 64 bit version. The web has speculation that you need to install the Mac Pro drivers on the MacBook and mostly the 2.1 64 nit BC update is reported to install. I don't really want to deal with bit torrent, and that seems to fly in the face of Apple's interests so it's odd the drivers are just not on Apples site in seperate install packages for each device.
It's possible I need a newer retail leopard, but even so a "real" hardware company would provide individual driver installers on their site. After futzing around every which way with boot camp trying to get net and other things working, I had a realization.
Forget boot camp.
It's probably a waste of time.
The four things I care about are net (wired and 802.11, display drivers, audio).
A troll around the net dug up Marvell Yukon drivers for Vista64 (Marvell's site), Broadcom 43xx drivers (in an asus package from a random site), Realtek ALC885 drivers (from realtek's site). Video I've not got to yet, I booted into OS X to look at "about this mac" to see what kind of hardware is in this puppy. And while I was here I thought I'd write this up in case it saves anyone else some pain.
You'll need to do a manual install of the realtek and broadcom drivers, the marvel installer did the right thing. To do that, bring up the start menu (bottom LH corner), find computer on the right hand side of this. Right click that and choose "Manage". Click devices and then navigate to the device for which you want to reinstall the drivers, double click to get the properties dialog, hit the drivers tab and click the reinstall button, manually install the drivers, navigating to the folder you unzipped the driver files to.
I now have networking and sound, display is up next. I deinstalled Apple's software update stuff and boot camp. Vista 64 works quite well once you get the non apple supplied drivers on there.

I just bought my first Mac, Macbook Pro 15in 2.53GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4GB (two 2GB SO-DIMMs) of 1066MHz DDR3 SDRAM, 320GB Serial ATA; 5400 rpm.
I installed XP of a disk I had then used a Vista upgrade disk i had to install Vista. I noticed quickly that it was a 32bit version since it only recognized 3gb ram. I have been trolling the forums here and still have yet to get a straight answer on how to install vista 64 and have it actually work. So when what you are saying is I need a Mac Pro disk? Not the disk that came with my Macbook Pro to install all the drivers I need?
James
So it really depends. If you have an "early 2008" MBP as follows:
Hardware Overview:
Model Name: MacBook Pro
Model Identifier: MacBookPro4,1
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
Processor Speed: 2.6 GHz
Number Of Processors: 1
Total Number Of Cores: 2
L2 Cache: 6 MB
Memory: 4 GB
Bus Speed: 800 MHz
Boot ROM Version: MBP41.00C1.B00
SMC Version: 1.27f1
Serial Number: xxxxxxxxxxx
Sudden Motion Sensor:
State: Enabled
Then the disk from an equivalent Mac Pro (needs to be of similar vintage) may help you. But if you have once of the newer models ("late 2008") this has an nVidia chipset in it and the drivers for that may not be on the Mac Pro.
You'll need 64bit drivers for the nVidia chipset for this to work.
A side note is that the EFI implementation on the "Early 2008" MPB might well be 32 bit, so it's debatable if you get the full advantage of 64bit Vista in terms of performance. It worked for me, but YMMV. In any case when Windows 7 ships, my Macs will mostly be in "Legacy" mode.

Wake up my Mac Pro 3.1 early 2008
The matter that when I wake up my Mac pro 3.1 (early 2008) from sleep the console keeps refering:
"10/1/15 11:55:53.000 AM kernel[0]: IOATAController device blocking bus."
hasn't be solved in Yosemite. Is it due to not APPLE approved Samsung 850 EVO 250GB SSD, or My Mac incompatibility?
I face that matter also on every OS I used since I installed an intel SSD in the past, so I keep disabled sleep time in preferences pane all these years!Did you try the SSD in any other sata Bay?
About trim:
this what I said in another thread about it (Re: Slow Intel 530 SSD in Mac Pro 1.1 (only write is slow) ):
Trim is a OS command that tells the SSD which files are deleted in the system. So that Garbage Collection can work more efficiently, but is is still the SSD controller that actually makes the deleted blocks free to write on. That said, for GarbageCollection to work well you need to have enough free space on the SSD, for example 5GB free on a SSD is too low and will cause slow write speeds.
In addition, when there is not much overprovisiong the lifetime of a SSD is shorter that with much overprovisioning: so if you think that the SSD slow write speed is due to this, reformat and let a serious space unformatted, like 10%.
As said in another thread about Trim, for Trim to work in Yosemite you need the disrobe a layer of security, personally I was a proponent of Trim in the "Grant Pannel period", a few yrs ago, in the time that teenager Oskar Groth started to copy the GP commandline in an app, in the beginning there were a lot of issues with that app but later on it was issue free. Allessandro Boschini had the same approach but used C to program his tool. Nowadays, with the SSDs having much better controllers, I propose that the install of Trim in Yosemite is not worth the loss of security. All in all, installing trim is a serious hack in a Core kext. There are (sporadic) reports that the trim hack in a Mac can lead to issues. Until now nobody has revealed what Apple uses as special in the Apple built in SSDs in which case there is a trim command in the OS.

Mac Pro (early 2008) keeps crashing
I have a Mac Pro (early 2008) that keeps crashing, becoming ever more frequent. It usually happens upon starting up the computer, and once it's all loaded, it crashes, as in all shuts down, and then immediateky restarts itself. This can go on repetitively 10 times or more. Usually, once it's stabilized and remains open, perhaps after 30min-1 hour, it will remain ok for the rest of the day. Does anyone have any ideas what could be causing this problem. Do I need to update the memory/the graphics card/buy new computer?! Any advice would be very much appreciated. Here are the specs:
Processor 2 x 2.8 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon
Memory 6 GB 800 MHz DDR2 FB-DIMM - 2GB 2GB 1GB 1GB (4 slots free)
Graphics ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT 256 MB

a new set of 2 x 2GB FBDIMM $25 might be worth for testing.
replacing the ATI 2600XT or get Apple to, they still will it seems like.
Was it a clean install of Mavericks? did you import your old apps and profile data? might be worth a look at redoing.
Some airport and wifi/BT cards can be suspect.
Whatever is happening, all those crashes are going to mangle the directory of the boot drive even more. Reason in spades to have a clean system, image it for restore, and so you have a system just for testing.
3.1's in their 4 yrs have had more issues like this than any other model. -
Mac Pro early 2008 no chime and does not start up
Hi All,
My MacPro early 2008 will start up beautifully today, but the next day .....nothing.
No power light comes on, no chime, memory riser board leds all come on.
It looks/sounds like only the hard drives power up and the fan from the video card spins.
But for the rest nothing.
It can take several days before it will start again.
When it runs and I switch it off it will not switch back on again.
Tried all tricks in the book for resetting, but still random result.
I have 4Gb of memory, changed it out for a different set...no difference.
I have the standard video card it came with and a new Radeon 5770....no difference.
Tried different HD....and no HD installed, no difference.
Machine is very clean inside because it is cleaned on a regular base.
I am starting to suspect the power supply.
But i am not an expert in this and help in South Africa unfortunately is not around the corner.
I had problems with this machine before when it still was under 3 years warranty.
It took me 4 months to get it back fixed with everything working again.
I had to send it back 3 times to get all issues sorted.
So....yes i am a bit worried to go this route again and now all costs are on me.
Is there anybody out there with similar issues that can help me sort out where to look for ?
And is it still worth to fix it or not ?
Like to hear from you.
Cheers, Kavangogo to a black screen after 15 minutes or a couple hours
That is probably an indication that you need to find a new graphics card.
RE: Mac Pro Replacement Graphics cards
1) Apple brand cards,
2) "sold in the Apple store" cards, and
3) "Mac Edition" cards ...
... show all the screens, including Boot up screens, Safe Mode, Installer, Recovery, debug screens, and Alt/Option boot screens. At this writing, these choices include:
1) Apple brand cards:
• Apple-firmware 5770, about US$250** works near full speed in every model Mac Pro, Drivers in 10.6.5
• Apple-firmware 5870, about US$450
2) "sold in the Apple store" cards
• NVIDIA Quadro 4000, about US$1200
• NVIDIA Quadro 5000, about US$2500
3) "Mac Edition" cards -- REQUIRE 10.8.3 or later:
• SAPPHIRE HD 7950 3GB GDDR5 MAC Edition, about US$480** Vendor recommends Mac Pro 4,1
• EVGA GTX 680 Mac Edition, about US$600
The cards above require no more than the provided two 6-pin aux power connectors provided in the Mac Pro through 2012 model. Aux cables may not be provided for third-party cards, but are readily available.
If you are Meet ALL of these:
• running 10.8.3 or later AND
• don't care about "no boot screens" etc AND
• can re-wire or otherwise "work out" the power cabling, THEN:
You can use many more cards, even most "PC-only cards" -
Is there any way windows 8.1 can be installed on an early 2008 iMac?
Hello apple community! I've had various desktop maps since the mid-90's, but over the past 6 years I have found myself limited many times due to my computer being incompatible with many third party programs and various games that are only supported by windows. Therefore, I have finally gone out and purchased windows 8.1 from my local best buy to be run alongside Yosemite. I brought in all of my computer specifications and was told that I would be able to run the operating system.
The minimum requirements are as follows:
Processor: 1 gigahertz (GHz) or faster with support for PAE, NX, and SSE2
RAM: 1 gigabyte (GB) (32-bit) or 2 GB (64-bit)
Hard disk space: 16 GB (32-bit) or 20 GB (64-bit)
Graphics card: Microsoft DirectX 9 graphics device with WDDM driver
My specs are as follows:
iMac (20-inch, Early 2008)
OS X Yosemite (Version 10.10)
Processor: 2.66 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
RAM: 4 GB 800 MHz DDR2 SDRAM (just updated)
Hard disk space: 332.3 GB free of 639.28 GB (plus a new 1 TB external drive that is in the process of being filled)
Graphics: ATI Radeon HD 2600 Pro 256 MB
Apparently my computer can only run bootcamp 4 and not bootcamp 5. Therefore, windows 8 is not supported for it can only be installed with bootcamp 5.
Sources: 1.Boot Camp 4, OS X Lion and Mountain Lion: Frequently asked questions - Apple Support
2. Boot Camp: System requirements for Microsoft Windows operating systems - Apple Support
However, I've read articles about people possibly getting past these limitations, but they don't exactly follow my issue and may be outdate. Such as, http://www.videograndpa.com/?p=2628. I've seen posts from people in the forms saying that they are running windows 8 on their early 2008 mac, but they are from over a year ago. I've also read that apple may have had support for these operating systems, but dropped them, but the links to this information were broken. Best Buy has agreed to let me return Windows 8.1, but only for store credit. That is not fair if it turns out that I can not install it operating system when I was told I could by their employee.
So, in conclusion, I'm wondering if anyone knows if I can install Windows 8.1 on my iMac from early 2008 with Yosemite and if they could walk me through it or link me somewhere that can. Thank you for your time.
WilliamDon't use a virtual machine, it's kinda cpu intensive. You CAN install windows 8.1 on your 2008 iMac. I know this because just a couple weeks ago I installed an official windows 8.1 disk on my 2009 iMac. You do NOT need to use bootcamp for it although you WILL need the boot camp drivers. Just put the drivers onto a thumb drive. You will need to install them manually, it's really easy though, so don't get discouraged. The only thing you need bootcamp for is to download the drivers onto the thumb drive. You can also download drivers for bootcamp version 5 from the apple website.
Here is how you do it: Go to disk utility inside applications folder and then utilities folder. Add a second partition to your mac and format it as FAT32.
Put the windows disk in your computer and reboot your computer. Hold down the OPTION key and then choose the "windows" disk then hit enter. Follow the instructions.
In the beginning there will be a screen asking you to select which partition you want to install windows on, highlight it, and then click on "format" because it is then going to reformat the partition as NTFS. It only takes a second. Just follow the installation instructions, it's pretty straight forward from there. And just to forewarn you, apple doesn't care to update the drivers for SOUND, people with iMac's running windows don't have sound so you will need a third party sound card adapter with a headphone and microphone jack and use either headphones or an external speaker. I got a cheap one from ebay for just a few bucks. I use the "Syba" brand and it works, it even plays that pretty windows startup sound. All sounds work, even youtube.
Thank me later! By the way, I think you will find that windows 8.1 runs way faster and smoother than mavericks or yosemite. The mac os's have gotten pretty buggy and bloated over the years and so I think we are making a switch to windows at the right time. Everyone is saying how much better microsoft has gotten and I can tell. I have everything pretty much set up how I like it in my windows 8.1 partition and it's pretty fast. Also, it is WORTH IT to pay for the MacDrive software. Just google it. It will enable you to view and change any apple formatted disk/drive, including your mac osx partition on your internal hard drive. This is important for me because all of my music is on my mac partition in itunes and I need it to add music to my iPod classic 160gb but with macdrive I can listen to the music in vlc player or windows media player. I don't think I will install itunes on windows because everyone says the windows version is buggy. -
Install Windows 7 64-Bit on Early 2008 Macbook ?'s
My wife has an early 2008 Macbook with 2.4 GHz processor that I recently upgraded the OS to OS X 10.7.5 and upped the ram to 4 GB. I had installed a Boot Camp for Windows Vista 32-bit that is still working, but I have a Windows 7 64-bit installation disc that I would like to use on this machine. I want to completely delete the existing Windows Vista install and put Windows 7 in its place. I have found through my research that even though the 64-bit version of Windows 7 is "not supported" for this machine, it will still work with the right drivers and will require Boot Camp 4.0
My questions are:
- Will the 64-bit version of Windows 7 definitely work on this machine?
- How would I delete the current Windows Vista installation?
- Where do I get the 64-bit Apple drivers for Windows 7? I keep reading about pulling them from the Snow Leopard install DVD, which I have, but I am currently running OS X Lion on the machine, which I do not have a disc for (only received a download code from Apple). Would the drivers be built-in to Boot Camp 4.0?1. From Boot Camp Support Software 4.0.4033 (these can be directly downloaded to the Windows side, once Windows is installed).

Early 2008 MBP w/ NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT graphics processor fail
My beautiful Macbook Pro 17" (early 2008) just started getting stripes on the screen and randomly shutting down; research and a call to a local Mac repair person say this is the known problem with the NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT graphics processor.
What do I do now considering the class action suit in the States, and it being 2014? Do I take it to my nearest Apple store and request a fix/replacement?
I've been a Mac user since the early 6100, moved to my beautiful G4 ('Albert', as he was lovingly known), then on to the eMac 800. Bought the Macbook Pro 17" in May 2008 because I needed it to travel with but now it's presenting with vertical stripes and will suddenly shut down for no reason.
Have a Mac Mini which is my main machine, but I really need the MPB for when I travel abroad.
I don't think it's fair that the machine I bought, which I now I find out has a known issue with the graphics card, won't get dealt with because Apple closed the replacement programme in December 2012 (according to this page on Apple MacBook Pro: Distorted video or no video issues). And if it's a known faulty piece of hardware that was installed in their machines, how can there be a time limit on the replacement? If I only use my machine once in a blue moon that means it will, logically, fail much later that a person who uses a machine every day, so why do I lose out. I spent just the same amount of money to buy the new machine as everyone else so where are my consumer rights?
If there's an Apple representative that would like to respond and resolve my issue, I would be grateful. I can take my machine to the nearest Apple 'genius' bar tomorrow for the diagnostic to prove it's a faulty Nvidia graphics processor.
I'm hoping my dad with his Dell PC, which he bought in 2005 and is still running, is not right to scoff at my Mac love!
With kind regards,
Tracy Shorrock
@FreelancealotHi Kappy,
I found my nearest UK store in Solihull, but it tells me there's no availability for appointments with people with Macs until Friday at 4pm!!! I'll be leaving the country on Thursday and need this sorted out before then.
I don't want to delay my flight, drive all the way to Solihull to be told my MBP is out of the time perioid available for the replacement programme. What exactly do you mean by 'take it in for a service'? If it's the Nvidia card as everything points to, what will they do?
Thanks for your time, and suggestions.
Cheers,

Memory upgrade on a early 2008 iMac
Hi, I have a early 2008 24" iMac with 2 GB 800 MHz DDR2 SDRAM.
I have read conflicting information here vs. Apple support site and would just like some advise and possibly answers from someone who has my computer that has done a succesful upgrade. I would obviously like to upgrade as high as I can. Apple says the Max I can have is 4 GB, but I have read that the real size is 6 GB. Which is it?
Also, does anyone know of a specifc Ram that wont break the bank but is still good?
Thanks! Many people on these forums speak well of the following suppliers.
Can't tell where you come from but ...
In North America contact OWC … Upgrade Apple iMac Memory
In Europe contact Crucial.com … RAM Memory Upgrade
Both companies have facilities to guide you and will recommend the correct memory package to meet whatever needs you describe to them.
There may be benefits buying from your own geographical location insofar as Shipping charges, Local sales taxes and Exchange rates. Check out the basic memory costs and do your sums.
Guide to required RAM. Lookup Mac Specs By Serial Number, Order, Model & EMC Number, Model ID @ EveryMac.com
I think you can use 6GB on that machine.

How to use Analog out with a 7330/7604 motion setup.
Hello: I am using a NI 7330 motion controller and a MID-7604 driver. I would like to use the Analog Output of the MID-7604 driver. Ideally, we would use an actual DAQ, but we don't want to purchase hardware for a one-time use kind of thing. The dri
