Early 2009 Macbook display problems

I have a early 2009 macbook (aluminium). when i try to turn it on all that comes up is a lit up black screen, as if it is on but nothing happens. i went in to an apple store and he connected it to an external display but still nothing happened. Please help

That's ALL they did at the Apple Store? Really? Normally they'll run a diagnostic on it and at least tell you what the problem is.
Is the macbook starting up? Do you hear the start up chime? If so I'm guessing that the graphics chip has failed. IF that's the case you'll more than likely need a new logic board. Keep in mind that I'm guessing, it's impossible to diagnose hardware prolems on a user to user message board.
You can always try resetting the SMC and PRAM but I wouldn't hold my breath.

  • Early-2009 Macbook display dimming

I have read several posts and watched several videos on this already, however my problem seems slightly unique as to what I have read so far. (I may be wrong about that.) My Macbook's display constantly dims to an almost black, I didn't realize the display was even on until about 2 hours ago. But I can see that the display is indeed on, I can turn it all the way down with the F1 key, then up with the F2 key, but it's hit or miss. Sometimes the display will brighten, most other times it will flicker on and go back dim. I have posted a video on this, because it was kind of hard to explain, figured it'd be easier to troubleshoot if you knew what it was doing. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OYb4Y2XE4Pw&list=UUCNnIhMJdjY9Kf_jgC2vjPw
Comp Info: Early-2009 Macbook, Running Mavericks 10.9.4
What I've tried: PRAM reset, ran Disk Utility repair, booting into Safe Mode, SMC reset, Changed energy saver modes to never dim screen... I'm out of ideas, does anyone have any suggestions.

  • Early 2009 MacBook backlight inverter problem?

My early 2009 MacBook is having a bit of trouble with the display backlight. Nowadays in order to get the backlight to turn on I need to fiddle around with the display until it comes on, then I have to keep it steady or it may go out again. I have traced the problem to the backlight, because when my screen blacks out if I look real closely or shine a light on it, I can see the stuff on the screen.
I know this can be fixed. I do not want to risk opening the MacBook to do so, because I could probably break something (this once happened when I attempted to repair a PowerBook G4; I wound up disabling the Wi-Fi.) I did hear from someone who had the same problem with the same model early this year, he took it to his nearest Apple Store, and even though it was no longer under warranty, it only cost $45 for the inverter to be replaced! (It also had a chipped palmrest and that helped with the fee too; mine has a somewhat chipped palmrest as well.) Does Apple really do something like that, or would I be better off with a local computer repair shop?
    Plrease reply ASAP

The inverter regualtes the power to the back light,  i had macbook 2008 inverter break on me and attempted the fix myself.  £10 ($15) for the inverter on ebay and about an hour of my time.  The reason its a tricky fix is because the inverter is in the hinge of the screen so the whole screen needs to be removed! as i put it back together i was silently praying that i had put everything back right!
it worked fien though! i no 2 year ago when the original owner of that mac took it to be looked at they quoted her £ 150 ($230) to have it fixed so its good to see the price has come down for you!

  • First is it possible to connect my imac eaRLY 2009 as display for my macbook white 2010?

first is it possible to connect my imac eaRLY 2009 as display for my macbook white 2010? If so what exact cables on the market do i need to purchase to make this work? Please help me out. I cannot afford to buy a new mac so temporarily this is my only solution.
Thanks to all my Mac buddies for your assistance

    The Early2009 20" or 24" iMac don't have any video-in capabilities.
Depending on your needs, you can investigate or tryout AirDisplay or ScreenRecycler which enable use of a Mac from another Mac or Windows PC through network/wireless connections.

Early 2009 MacBook Air. On startup no keyboard or mouse me to login. Neither is the USB working so I cannot use an external mouse or keyboard either. If I keep restarting the machine suddenly sometime I get mouse and keyboard control and I am able to login and work. After sometime though mouse and keyboard Control is lost again and the machine hangs.
Lately another problem has cropped up. Now the machine starts up and seems to work for longer time but I have no 0 key and USB everything else is fine.

I paid for mountain lion, is there any way of giving it back and getting a refund? obvisoulsy after unintalling it. I couldn't see any reason why it would be bad for my particular macbook, and it downloaded without a problem.

In what way is it terrible? Mountain Lion is pretty stable. If you are having problems, most likely they are unique to your particular system and can be fixed. If you don't like some of the new features, that does not constitute reason for a refund.
If that does not suit you, you will have to discuss a refund with Apple, as they are the only ones who can say. Note that the App Store terms do say that all sales are final, so you are not guaranteed a refund, especially since whatever problems you had are not due to defective software.

  • Will my early 2009 macbook pro support 8g ram sticks?

Hello people of the internet smarter than me,
I'm looking to overhaul my early 2009 Macbook Pro. I have the standard 2g memory in there, and beyond need the extra memory for the work load currently having to be done on there. However I've read in a few forums that anything over 6g causes the computer to slow down and lag out. I was wondering if anyone else found this issue to be true, or if it's been fixed. Also what are some good places to find decent memory for the mac? I've checked crucial and a couple of other sites with promising leads.
         Thank you friends

I think I finished installing Mountain Lion, and am at the "log in" page with the Mountain Lion icon, but I cannot do any of the functions on screen. As the last post suggests, call Apple and order a replacement original disc for about $17.  They will ask you the model and serial numbers.
Your retail version of Snow Leopard OS 10.6.3 will not work on that Mac as it requires a minimum of OS X 10.6.7 to boot and operate.
Another alternative is to again borrow another Mac to install your retail Snow Leopard into an external HD or partition, upgrade it to 10.6.8 and then clone it back to a partition on your MBP.

  • Any BootCamp updates for the Early 2009 MacBook?

    Hello Experts!
I just purchased an Early 2009 MacBook (the $999 model), which runs OS X 10.5.6. I set up a BootCamp partition upon which I installed Windows XP Pro.
I am having some difficulties with a USB device and I wonder if it is possible that, since this is a newer Mac, I might need newer BootCamp drivers. Looking at the Apple web site, I see that there is a BootCamp 2.1 available, which is a Windows EXE, but which is dated April 24, 2008 (prior to the release of the "Early 2009" MacBook).
I think I want to download and try this, but I am a little concerned about the statement on the web page that says, "Important: Installation of Boot Camp 2.1 is required before installing Windows XP Service Pack 3 (SP3)". Since I have already upgraded XP to SP3, I am somewhat confused about this. (As are others who have asked the same question, though I haven't seen a definitive answer.)
So, with all of that in mind, here are my questions...
    1) Do I need to download this update if I am already running 10.5.6? (The BootCamp assistant reports itself as 2.0, so it seems that 10.5.6 probably shipped with BootCamp 2.0)
    2) What happens if I try to install the 2.1 drivers after I've already updated to SP3?
    3) Are there, perhaps, even newer drivers that might be specific to the Early 2009 MacBook?

  • I am in the process of completely restoring my (Early 2009) MacBook.  In doing so, of course, I am backing up or otherwise transferring all of the files that I would like to keep onto my desktop iMac over wifi by simply connecting to the user account-

On the shared option in Finder.  Would there happen to be a quicker, more effective means of doing this?  I don't have an external hard drive (other than my 1TB iMac's).  Is that something that the 'Thunderbolt' cable is designed for?
It seems like it might take up to eight hours to compelte the transfer, since there is almost 20GB of material.

I agree with Keith about using the Target Disk Mode,  Transferring files between two computers using FireWire. This way there's no chance of errors due to dropouts using the wireless connection.
According to MacTracker your early 2009 Macbook does have a Firewire 400 connector which should do the job very well.

Onto all of my other device.  Is all of the music in iCloud safe if I restore my MacBook?
I have an iPhone and an iMac.  There is a lot of music that I have downloaded from iCloud onto both devices – however, not all.  My question is: will the songs that have not been downloaded onto my iMac from iCloud be lost if I restore the computer that was the original location of all of that music?

  • Scroll lag/high scroll latency (not slow or jerky) MacBook White Early 2009 (MacBook 5,2)

I'm having a strange problem that's not easy to explain. It will probably take one or two reads!
I have two Macs, one has the problem, the other does not:
    2009 MacBook White 2GHz Core 2 Duo - 8GB 667MHz DDR2 SDRAM - NVIDIA 9400M 256MB Dedicated - OS X Lion (HAS PROBLEM)
    2009 Mac Mini 2GHz Core 2 Duo - 2GB 667MHz DDR2 SDRAM - Intel GMA 950 64MB Shared - OS X Lion (DOES NOT HAVE PROBLEM)
The problem is with scrolling with a mouse wheel or trackpad in various apps, iTunes in Album List display mode is the example I'll use.
I have the same iTunes library with around 4,500 tracks on BOTH Macs.
When I scroll the list initially everything is fine but with repeated consecutive scrolling actions either in the same direction or alternating (with any mouse wheel, magic mouse, built in trackpad or magic trackpad) the response slowly gets further and further behind the physical action to the point where I will stop the physical scrolling action and iTunes continues to scroll mimicing my previous actions (including any slowing, speeding up and direction changes) for 5 seconds or more until it catches up. It's NOT jerky, it just starts to lag behind.
The strange thing is that if I open another app (like Terminal), move it completely out of the way so that the entire iTunes window is visible but the other window still has focus and then scroll the iTunes window without it in focus there is no delay at all and the responses map the physical scroll actions 1 to 1.
I did have MagicPrefs installed but have uninstalled it. I've tried shutting all apps asside from iTunes and it makes no difference. I've tried an SMC reset, no joy. There are no repeating messages in console.
Any ideas? It's bugging me a lot.
    Thanks!
    Marc Roberts

Compare what's going on in Activity monitor (Applications > Utilities > Activity.monitor.app) when you are getting the delay and when you scroll withoud delay with a different input window selected.
Do the same with your mac that doesn't have the problem, and see if there's any obvious differences. Post back here any processes that are consuming a lot of CPU time, and the page in/outs/swaps.

  • IMac 24" (early 2009) Mini Display to HDMI possible?

As there is no Mini Display to HDMI adapter available as of yet I tried to connect a new 24" iMac (early 2009) to a Sharp LCD TV via: Mini Display --> DVI --> HDMI.
Although the iMac recognizes the Sharp and switches resolution automatically (I also tried every other available resolution) the TV screen stays black (HDMI is EXT 5, but I also tried the other EXTs).
I googled and it seems to me that our setup works for some people with some LCD TVs (Sharp too).
Any thoughts where the problem here could be?

Open System Preferences Displays pane Display tab. If there are two displays being recognized, there should also be an Arrangement tab, but stay on the Display tab.
Click the button that says +Gather Windows+. Although you cannot see the image on the TV (since you say it is black), you should now get the control window for that TV display on your iMac's display.
Try making adjustments to the resolution and refresh rate to see if you can get a response on the TV's screen.

  • What is the best way to upgrade my Early 2009 Macbook Pro 17"?

My Macbook hasn't been working well and I'm worried about things getting worse when going to Yosemite.  My system has some hardware problems (CD drive doesn't work, needs a new battery), but I'm looking to upgrade the whole system now.  I'd like to up the RAM to 8GB, put in a new hard drive (solid state?), etc...
