Early 2010MBP won't start from HD, Restore partition or CD (but Target sees CD)

Hi,
So my MBP threw a wobbler last night.  Started acting slow as ***, and the HD started being a little more vocal than usual..  I thought i'd repair permissions, run some 3rd party first aid and see if i could back it up.  It's not the first time its happened and that process seemed to work. (With hindsight, I should have replaced the HD at that time)
Anyway, it was running so slowly that it took about 10 mins to open up the utility folder in order to load disk utilty and even then the icons were all just the generic "app" ones.  It wouldnt load disk utility and decided to "beachball" instead.  So i waited for that to finish and shut it down.
Upon restarting, the chime sounded as usual, then again, (this time with what sounded cracked in the  middle), then again, then again etc etc
I turned it off at the power button, and tried again, this time it only chimed once and got as far as the usual grey screen with the dark grey apple followed by the spinning icon below.. And here it has hun ever since.
After an hour of hopefulness, i gave up and turn it off at the power, inserted my restore disk and figured i'd try disk utility this way instead (as usual)
It does EXACTLY the same when trying to boot from CD except the moving icon freezes after a while
repeated attempts at booting from CD. - no joy until the last occasion i got the infamous black screen of multiple languages!!!
Zapped PRAM and SMC
Still no joy
Tried to start to Target Disk - afer several attempts, the Fire Icon eventually displayed.. Connected to other mac, and it will see the CD but not the internal HD.
I flicked through some readme files on the cd (over fw target mode) in an attempt to test reliability of my cd optical drive and it's fast and as expected.
Disk utility over FW target mode also only shows CD - not HD
Restarted with CD by holding option key, it shows the CD, no HD, No restore volume.
selected CD and press enter, grey screen, grey apple, grey spinning icon...
hangs
here we are again
any ideas???

Sounds like it's time for a new hard drive.
You might, try starting in single user mode. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1492
At the prompt type fsck -fy remember to leave a blank space before the "-fy". This will run a file system check, like Repair Disk and repair any problems if it can. If you run into errors run fsck multiple times until it reports OK. Then, type reboot to restart to OS X.

    This procedure will totally erase the iPad so I hope that you have a backup that you can restore from....assuming that it works, that is.

    This is a directory issue that Disk Utility cannot fix. Although it manifests itself as a software issue sometimes it may be hardware based. See DiskUtility reports "Underlying task reported failure" when repairing avolume http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1901?viewlocale=en_US". You can try using a utility like TechTool Pro, Drive Genius or Disk Warrior to repair and replace the directory. Another option would be to use the Archive and Install feature to reinstall. If the problem returns after correction you may have a failing or failed HDD.

  • IMac5,2 won't start from Raid formatted disk on Firewire

    Hello,
    I have an external disk with 2 drives. The disk is setup as RAID1 (I tried both, ApplesDisk Utilitie's RAID and SoftRaid). In both cases I can't bless the drive as startup disk and get the error Could not find IOKit entry for
    IODeviceTree: ... and the iMac also won't start from the external FW drive.
    As soon as I connect the drive via USB it works.
    Any ideas?
    thanks

    Hi Matthias
    What make of external HD or enclosure are your drives in?
    If it boots with the USB connection then you should try a different FireWire cable.

  • Computer won't start from hard drive or CD, and won't perform system recovery.

    I have an HP Pavilion g7-1314nr. Yesterday it froze and I held down the power button to turn it off. After turning it back on, it started a disk check. I turned it off during the disk check, and upon trying to boot it back up, it told me booting failed and to press CTRL-ALT-DELETE to try again. After multiple attempts, it stopped displaying this message.  Under system diagnostics, I ran a boot test, and it failed. Attempting a system recovery brings up the start-up windows logo, and then a black screen with an enlarged cursor. This morning, I inserted a recovery disk and told it to boot from internal CD/DVD drive. Like system recovery, it brings the Windows logo, and then a black screen with an enlarged cursor. My computer is incapable of booting from either the hard drive or a CD. What do I do?

    Hi @TeridaxXD001 ,
    Thank you for visiting the HP Support Forums and Welcome. I have looked into your issue about your HP Pavilion g7-1314nr Notebook and issues with Windows 7 and starting up.  I recommend to restore the BIOS defaults. You could restore the BIOS with this document selecting the reloading the BIOS default settings which should resolve the fan issue.
    Here is a link to computer won't start for Windows 7. There is a section on getting past the HP Logo screen.
    If that does not help at the end of the document it shows you to do a hardware test.
    Please note remove any and all USB devices before troubleshooting. Disconnect all non-essential devices
    Hope this helps you out.
    Thanks.

  • EMac won't start from optical drive

    For no apparent reason, my eMac stopped recognizing the ethernet connection. So, after reading about this problem on the forums, I tried two suggestions: resetting the NVRAM and zapping the PRAM. This fixed the ethernet problem.
    But, I now have a new problem. The eMac won't start up from the optical drive [hold C key during startup nor choosing disc in startup control]. The startup routine gets to the pale gray apple, but the little rotating spokes do not appear. Instead the gray apple seems to jump about a quarter inch to the right and it seems like a square image tries to appear. The routine freezes at this point and and the optical drive spins down. I have to unplug the eMac, and then restart from power button. At this point it starts up fine from the internal drive.
    I tried zapping the PRAM again. I also removed the battery. There is no accessible PMU/CUDA button that I can find. At this point, I've run out of ideas.

    Thanks for the further suggestions.
    I tried the fsck and it reported no problems. I had my doubts that this was a source because the problem of not booting from superdrive came AFTER the NVRAM reset, which is fundamentally a hardware modification. I boot periodically from Panther install disc 1 to do a repair disc and permissions routine. When I couldn't do this after the NVRAM reset, I could only conclude that this tweek had some direct effect on the Mac's firmware-based start-up routines.
    There is nothing physically wrong with the install discs, they work perfectly in my other emac as well as my two G4 towers. So, I'm still at a loss as to what to do next. I can't reload the OS. And, I can do any hardware diagnostics. So I guess it's a decision of whether or not to spend the big $$ for Apple repair. These are classroom macs, and we have no tech support or $$.

  • Won't start from CD

    Hello to the mac family,
    I am having a problem starting from a CD (Norton's)
    I hold down the C key on startup and I also have tried selecting the CD as a start-up disc in the control panel. Neither idea works. I wanted to run Norton. I know DW is probably best but ....$$$$ The CD does open on desktop and appears fine, it just won't boot to it. I zapped and rebuilt using TT lite
    Any ideas greatly appreciated.........mGb......Jim
    Anyn idea

    James,
    I'm going to let you in on something. I've never heard of a Mac functioning correctly after installing any sort of Norton security software. I'm warning you, proceed at your own risk. You have a very good chance of losing all of your data. This is not an overexaggeration.
    I noticed that you're speaking of the Control Panel. Are you sure you're using an iMac G4? Are you on OS X?

  • My iDVD project won't start from the menu.

    When I create a DVD, it will not start from the menu but goes directly to play.  I can force it to the menu by clicking the "Disc Menu" button on my remote,  This happens on both of my DVD players, one or which is a Bose system.  I didn't have this trouble with DVDs created using my older G5 iMac.  This doesn't happen on all DVDs using the newer iMac.  I've used the "Revolution" theme and it seems to work OK.  For this current project, I used "Full Screen" from the list of older themes.
    I'm using iDVD 7.2.1 on an Intel iMac running OS10.6.8
    Thanks for your help,
    Jim

    Go to the Map mode in iDVD and make sure there are no items in the far left hand Autostart bin.
    If there is just drag it out, save the project as a disk image, File ➙ Save as Disk Image menu option, and test with DVD Player. If it plays OK with DVD Player the encoding was good and you can then burn to disk with Disk Utility at the slowest speed available to assure the best burn quality.  Always use top quality media:  Verbatium, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden DVD-R are the most recommended in these forums.

  • IMac dead, grey screen, won't start from disks

    I'm sure this is going to go over familiar territory.   We have a housefull of Macs and have had for a long time, and I'm fairly used to hunting down issues.  This particular one is a problem I've fortunately not seen before.  I suspect a serious hardware problem, but only got a look at it once it was fairly advanced.
    My teen son was using this computer, a 21"  iMac, I think from 2007 (it was a hand me down from his Mac-savvy Grandma).   He says that it was freezing on him for the last week or two, and he'd have to restart.  Then a couple of days ago when he restarted he got a folder icon with a ?, so he took the install discs and reinstalled the OS, which was 10.4.   Yes, at this point he'd already goofed, because he'd gone over his data, and though he had an external HD, he had not used it with Time Machine for several months.  I don't know what he was thinking, but he's 16...he probably was not.
    This was where I finally came in. Yes, get old Dad involved once an issue has reached the crisis stage. :-\
    At that point his desktop showed a fresh install of 10.4, which we wanted to update at least, and possibly retrieve his last Time Machine, but I figured there was likely an underlying problem.   Disk utility showed that the disk needed repairing, but I figured that needed to be done from an install disk, and for good measure, I should probably run the Hardware Test as well.
    Now things got complicated, because I have been unable to get the computer to start from any install disk I've tried.  We have two sets of original install disks from this generation of iMacs (two similar computers), and complete install discs for 10.5 and 10.6, as well as Disk Doctor.   The computer refuses to start up from any of them, with either 'C' or 'D' held down, nor will it start up in Safe Mode.  And now the fresh install of 10.4 has disappeared as well.
    All that occurs on restart, after the 'bong' is a grey screen. If a disk is in the optical drive, there is a brief sound of it spinning up, then silence for a good while, maybe 2 mins, then the disk is spit out.  Nothing more.  I have zapped the PRAM or whatever it's called these days, with no change.
    We did have an external DVD drive somewhere and I'd like to try that, in case there's a problem with the optical drive itself, but I am thinking this computer may have both disk and hardware issues.
    Any advice welcome...thanks in advance!

  • AudioInputStream won't start from the beginning

    I'm not sure if this is normal or not, but here's a weird the situation. I have a number of audio files that I play together. Nothing complicated.
        public void playAudio() {
            try{
                File soundFile_1 = new File("SoundFile1.wav");
                File soundFile_2 = new File("SoundFile2.wav");

                } catch (Exception e) {
                    e.printStackTrace();
                    System.exit(0);
        }I also have a method that combines the three audio files into one. I usually call this method after having played the files for a short time.
        public void saveAudio() {
            saveList.add(audioInputStream_1);
            saveList.add(audioInputStream_2);
            saveList.add(audioInputStream_3);
            saveMixAIS = new MixingFloatAudioInputStream(audioFormat_1, saveList);
            File saveFile = new File("SaveMix.wav");
            try {
                AudioSystem.write(saveMixAIS, AudioFileFormat.Type.WAVE, saveFile);
         } catch (IOException e) {
                e.printStackTrace();
    } Interesting enough, this code doesn't seem to combine the three audio files properly. What seems to happen is that the combined file starts at the location where I stopped playing. In order to get the files to start from the very beginning, I need to re-initialize the AudioInputStream.
        public void saveAudio() {
            try{
                File soundFile_1 = new File("SoundFile1.wav");
                File soundFile_2 = new File("SoundFile2.wav");
                File soundFile_3 = new File("SoundFile3.wav");
                audioInputStream_1 = AudioSystem.getAudioInputStream(soundFile_1);
                audioInputStream_2 = AudioSystem.getAudioInputStream(soundFile_2);
                audioInputStream_3 = AudioSystem.getAudioInputStream(soundFile_3);
            } catch (Exception e) {
                    e.printStackTrace();
                    System.exit(0);
            saveList.add(audioInputStream_1);
            saveList.add(audioInputStream_2);
            saveList.add(audioInputStream_3);
            saveMixAIS = new MixingFloatAudioInputStream(audioFormat_1, saveList);
            File saveFile = new File("SaveMix.wav");
            try {
                AudioSystem.write(saveMixAIS, AudioFileFormat.Type.WAVE, saveFile);
         } catch (IOException e) {
                e.printStackTrace();
    } Is this normal?

    That definitely makes sense.
    I was under the impression that the AudioInputStream never loses the data it has read and that the AudioSystem.write method always starts from the beginning of this AudioInputStream. I need to stop treating the AudioInputStream like an array and instead treat it more like fresh water.Definately.
    AudioInputStream doesn't actually have anything in it...it's actually just a wrapper. Whenever you call read on it, it just reads whatever it's wrapping around, and returns the result. This is why it can contain both live data being recorded or file data or a network stream or...
    In this case, it is reading from a BinaryFile. Everytime you call read, it increments the file position... and it doesn't reset the file position when you call AudioSystem.write...

  • [SOLVED] Gnome 3 : Nautilus won't start from other application

    Hi everyone!
    Ok I search everywhere and I found nothing. I have this problem for a long time for now. My interface is in french so I'll try to translate the message but they could be differente in an english gnome.
    I can start nautilus directly from the console or from the menu, no problem. But when I connect a usb drive or any external drive it pop me : "Impossible to open a folder for 'usbName'. No application are register to execute this file".
    Another exemple is when a download a file from internet and then from the browser I click "open the containing folder" it do nothing.
    If a open Baobab and I right click a folder and "open folder" it pop me : "Impossible to open the folder 'folderName'. No viewer are install"
    So well.... I really don't know what to do... Maybe it is in a kind of default application editor but well.. I find something that was kind of this but there was no option for the default system explorer.
    Help me please!!
    Thank you ! Hope someone know what to do! :-(

    right-click on a file / file-type that has no registered application, then click 'properties' and then navigate to the 'open with' tab ~ if there are no applications listed then click 'show other applications'... after that find the proper application to open a given file, then click 'set as default'.
    this should solve your problem. The only one i am not sure about is the USB thing, but the rest are easily solved. Gnome by default will not automatically associate all mime-types to applications. you need to do some of this yourself.
    for example; in order for .html files to open in gedit by default, I first had to associate .html to gedit, and 'set as default' ~ otherwise, all html (local files) automatically would open in Firefox.
    hope this helps

    My MacBook won't startup from it's CD. Instead, it ejects the disk.
    If ANYOE has a solution to this probloem, PLEASE respond below.
    Thanks, Nathan.

    There are a number of possibilities here.
    Bad install disk. Test with another disk to make sure the MacBook is not ejecting all disks.
    Bad optical drive. Test the disk in another computer.
    Firmware password set on the MacBook which will not allow it to boot from any external source.
