Early 2011 13" MacBook Pro maximum Ram upgrade amount

I have an early 2011 MacBook Pro 13" and am looking to upgrade my ram. I notice one Apple's website the maximum recommended amount to upgrade is only 8 Gb. Is it possible to upgrade to a higher amount without affecting my MacBook?

Not negatively. Apple didn't test it with the higher capacity modules before releasing it and didn't update its specifications afterwards.

  • Early 2011 13" MacBook Pro Freezing since upgrading to Mountain Lion

    Hey all,
I've been researching this issue extensively and it seems as if it would be most efficient if I started my own post instead of cluttering someone else's.
I upgraded to Mountain Lion within a week of its release. In the past two weeks, my computer has crashed 3 to 4 times. I can still move my mouse, and if I have an app like Spotify open it will continue to play music through the speakers. However, the computer is frozen and I cannot type/click/control the computer. The only way to get it back is by pressing and holding down the power key and rebooting.
Called AppleCare and went to the "Genius" Bar multiple times; neither helped.
I ran EtreCheck on my computer and below are my results:

Should I be concerned with items marked as "failed" or "not loaded?" My MacBook does not crash daily (more like once or twice a week), and each time I have been doing very simply processes, like surfing the web with Chrome or writing something in Word or listening to Spotify.

Here's an updated report reflecting fewer errors that I took this afternoon. I hope someone on this message board can help...

First go to the RIM web site and look to see if they have an uninstaller for the device you had.  Some times a reinstall of the application and then running the uninstaller is required for complete removal.
If no uninstaller is available, then you will have to use Spotlight to find all items with 'Blackberry' and 'Rim' in the titles.  I would also download EasyFind and use that to locate such files.  Often it will locate items that Spotlight misses.
    Ciao.

  • You can't upgrade to a 7200rpm hard drive in the Early 2011 13" MacBook Pro. It is not supported. Period.

I tried unsuccesfully to upgrade the hard drive in my Early 2011 13" MacBook Pro to a 750GB 7200RPM hard drive. After several attempts with different hard drives I realized that the kernel panic that showed up was due to the lack of compatibility with the drives to the MacBook Pro. I had a Mid 2009 13" MacBook Pro that I did not have any issues with whatsoever. I sold that MacBook Pro and was able to upgrade to the brand new base model without any out of pocket cost. Upon purchase of the new 13" MBP I maxed out the RAM to the full 8GB. After 2 months of freezing, lockups, spinning rainbow wheels and having to force shutdown I tried one last ditch effort to see if a faster drive would help. After speaking with the Apple telephone reps and the Apple Store Genius Bar we discovered that Apple doesn't even offer the option of a 7200RPM drive on their website - a fact that I found quite disturbing. The concensus is that it is a power management issue that causes the incompatibility and the reason the drives are not offered on the 13" models. The problems I had were the end of the line for me. I just switched out that train wreck for the Early 2011 15" MacBook Pro base model. I got home and immediately installed the 750 GB 7200RPM Western Digital Scorpio Black hard drive and it was recognized within seconds. I'm back in business with gleeful abandon.

Sadly... they don't have all the answers. As someone who use to serve in the capacity (Mac Genius) it can definitely be a challenging position. You're "the voice" of Apple's service policy & procedures. Sounds like the person you spoke with got it wrong this time. It's definitely worth a follow up, because like I said, I've got a machine in my household that's living proof of compatibility between a 7200 RPM drive and 13" MBP (Early 2011).
Apple is very good about support documentation when there's incompatibility or unsupported configurations, the fact that there isn't one for 7200 RPM drives would tell me that the people/person you spoke with was misinformed.
I know I always appreciated when a customer made it known to me that I was wrong on something and supplied the right answer. I sure as heck don't have all the answers and if I can lead from my mistakes, well, I won't make them anymore.

  • Early 2011 2GHz Macbook pro distorted blue screen then wont boot, 3 times in last 2 weeks

I have an early 2011, 2GHz macbook pro (15' model with ati radeon graphics). It was running fine for the last two years. Over the last couple of weeks, following things happen:
    1. I was running on bootcamp windows, browsing and some flash content was open, suddenly distorted blue stripes appear and it froze. Force shut down using power button, turn on again and it wont boot on windows or mac, or recovery partition or from the dvd. Tried for about 4 hours, after nvram, pram reset, it was able to safe boot, then run disk utility to verify and repair the disk, it said that there were problems with hard drive and fixed, then booted normally.
    2. I thought that the problem might be because I was on windows, so took a back up of the windows drive, erased it and installed windows 8 using bootcamp. It ran well for an week. After that, once I connected it with the tv using HDMI to watch a video, after I disconnected it, the screen was garbled over the windows start screen, but I was able to command restart normally. After restart, it wont boot to windows or mac.
    3. After several hours of trying, i was able to boot using the dvd this time, it said it 'can not install mac on the hard drive', erased the hard drive and it was able to install the os (snow leopard). After completing install, logged in to app store to download previously purchased mountain lion. Then ran it to upgrade the os, after the upgrade was completed, at the point when it prompts for apple id and password to set up icloud, it again froze with distorted blue screen. Shut down forcefully. Then turn on again and it wont boot. After the white screen and the sound, it shows the apple logo and spinning wheel for a while, then a bright white screen and nothing happens.
Can anybody help reading the symptoms?

I have the Early 2011 2GHz Macbook Pro and I have the same problem too.
I switched out the logicboard a month ago and today the graphics just went distorted.
Any solutions? Now I'm thinking it is the Graphics Card.

  • Want to install Windows 8 on my early 2011 13" MacBook Pro?

    Hi guys,
I am planning to install Windows 8 but unsure of a few things, particularly with the version I have to get.
I have an early 2011 13" MacBook Pro, running 10.9.3 and it has never had any previous versions of Windows on it before. Can I simply get the "upgrade" version (which is cheaper), or do I have to get the "full" version to do this? I can't seem to find the "full" version anywhere on the Microsoft website by the way...
I am looking at this: http://www.microsoftstore.com/store/msaus/en_AU/pdp/Windows-8-Pro-Upgrade---Stud ent-Offer/productID.272005100 (student price upgrade version)
Would I be able to install that in Bootcamp? And what sort of files do I get once I pay for and download it?
    Thanks for your help

You can only install the upgrade version if you already have a full version of Windows installed. In your case you will need to purchase the full version.
    Buy it on disk.

  • Early 2011 15" Macbook pro fans full speed/unresponsive

I have an early 2011 15" Macbook Pro, running OSX 10.10.1 Yosemite. I can't say this problem started right after I upgraded to Yosemite, but it definitely did not happen before. Upon going to wake my computer up from sleep (whether the lid was open or closed - it has happened either way) the fans are running at full speed and the computer remains unresponsive to mouse clicks, keystrokes, hitting the power button once. I end up having to force a power off/on cycle. This does not happen every time the computer enters sleep. It most often happens after I have left it overnight but I have had it happen after only 30~ minutes of non-use.
    Any ideas?

    Hello Etherel90,
After reviewing your post, I have located an article that can help with in this situation. You may want to consider performing a PRAM reset:
OS X Yosemite: Reset your computer’s PRAM
If your Mac doesn’t seem to be remembering your speaker volume, display resolution, or the disk it should be using during startup, you may need to reset your computer’s PRAM.
Resetting PRAM may change some system settings and preferences. Use System Preferences to restore your settings.
Important:    To print these instructions, click the Share button  in the Help window, then choose Print.
Choose Apple menu > Shut Down.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Option, Command (⌘), P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on your Mac.
Immediately press and hold the Option-Command-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
Continue holding the keys down until your Mac restarts, and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.
After resetting your computer’s PRAM, you may need to update your speaker volume, display resolution, and startup disk preferences. For more information about PRAM, see the Apple Support article About NVRAM and PRAM.
Thank you for contributing to Apple Support Communities.
    Cheers,

  • Apple original battery for the Early 2011 17" MacBook Pro

The original battery is failing on an Early 2011 17" MacBook Pro (MacBookPro8,3), 2.3GHz - it has lasted 43 months according to coconutBattery. Often refuses to charge at all, holds about 6750mAh as compared to the original 8450mAh it could hold upon delivery. The battery has gone through 848 "loadcycles", not so far off from Apple's suggested 1,000 cycles, which I assume they meant should have taken place during the AppleCare period which ended 3 years after purchase = April 2011 - April 2014. The battery began having charging problems in June-July 2014, after 3 years and 3 months.
Have looked for a replacement battery and found many. What they have in common is they are (with one exception) not Apple, and specs differ from the original (the original specs taken from the battery the MBP was delivered with as new are 31CP90/44/89-2  Li-ion Polymer 10.95V 95.0Wh Model No. A1383).
An Apple certified service center in Stockholm Sweden offers an original Apple A1383 battery with identical specs, but: they only offer a 3-month guarantee! Even worse, they claim that they cannot discern the manufacturing date (or will not provide it).
I contacted OWC (macsales), have always been happy with their products and service and knowledge. They hold that they cannot offer this battery at all but that it should be available in the Apple Store, ie online. But we cannot find it there, one of the few models missing.
Probably a lot of people with an Early 2011 17" MacBook Pro 2.3GHz will be having this problem right around now. Has anyone found a great solution?

Have you tried ifixit or PowerBookMedic?

  • Early 2011 13" MacBook Pro Sata III

What does Negotiated Link Speed:          3 Gigabit mean when I have a sata III drive and connection?
I have an Early 2011 13" MacBook Pro and purchased a Corsair Force 3 120gb SSD to replace the HDD. It's all running fine (kind of). I have the latest firmware on the drive and all the updates for my mac. This drive is supposed to get around 500 MB/s r/w speed but because it is only being recognized at 3 Gigabit my speeds are being severely impacted.
Is there some way to force the drive into Sata III?

  • 64-bit or 32-bit for the 2011 (spring) Macbook Pro 8 RAM 500HD?

I wanted to know the differences between 64 bit and 32 bit OSx I am currently running the latest Lion 10.7.3 on a 2011 spring macbook pro with 8 gigs of ram 500 gigs HD. From what I can read in the info it looks like it defaults to 32 bit automatically but I was told that I can hold down the 6 and 4 keys during startup to start with 64 bit. I would just like to know anyones experiences and what software it works better with. I usually run Adobe CS5.5 and it would be great to find out 64 bit will give it a boost. Please list pros and cons you know of..
    Thanks..
    Pete

It should be running 64-bit on its own with Lion. My 2007 MBP began running full 64-bit after I installed Lion.
Run the Activity monitor and see what the kernel is using. It should show 64-bit.

  • I installed Windows 7 on my early 2011 stock Macbook pro 13" and it cut my RAM in half it syas i only have 2GB when i have 4GB. The version of windows is 7 Ultimate 32 bit

    More details-
i Burned the ISO to a DVD and installed it like that, then after the installation i installed all the latest drivers that i downloaded before the HDD partition. the windows partion is 50 GB which seems subsantial as i will only be using it for school programs that arent for mac. (this is off topic but some how without installing anything i have only 20GB of the windows partion left. dont know how this happend). this is all on my early 2011 Macbook pro 13" everything in it is stock, it came shipped with 4gb of RAM and a great Intel I5 dual core 2.3 GHZ with the Intell HD 3000 348MB video.

    Hi
32-bit Windows has an address space of 4GB. Part of that is used by system BIOSes and graphics memory. With my Mac Book which has a 1Gb graphics card you only get about 2.6-2.8GB of the RAM which would be addressable and usable.

  • Macbook Pro 16gb ram upgradability

I'm looking into buying a Macbook pro and was planning on buying the non-retina display version. This laptop will primarily be used for school work, iTunes, video streaming, Photoshop, lightroom, aperture, and whatnot. Now i plan on buying the 2.6gh version, but Im wondering if the 8gb of ram it comes with is enough. I also heard somewhere that it would be recognized and wouldn't make a difference if i upgraded it to 16gb.
I would've liked to go with the new retina display model, but i can only afford the lower entrance model with the 2.3 processor, and i'm not sure if this would work for my needs.

My 2011 MBP can take 16 GB RAM.  macsales.com sells the 16 GB kit for $160 currently.  Apple tests against the more commonly available RAM types when publishing hardware limits, so only reports 8 GB as a maximum.
8 GB RAM is abut $50 through macsales.com, so buy the default 4 GB regardless of where you decide to go.

  • Retina MacBook Pro 15'' Ram Upgrade

Hello, my name is Joseph and I have 15'' Retina Macbook Pro.
Well, recently, I want to upgrade my ram from 8g to 16g, anyone knows how much it cost? how long it take?

The Retina models can not have their RAM upgraded. It is permanently soldered to the main-board.

  • Early 2011 15inch MacBook Pro not displaying on external monitor

I have an early 2011 15 inch MacBook Pro and I tried to connect it to a Samsung U28D590D 4k display.  My computer is recognizing it as a monitor and saying that the output resolution is 2560x1440, which is what I expected considering my graphics card is an Intel HD Graphics 3000 512 MB and my chipset is an AMD Radeon HD 6490M with 256VRAM.  I just don't know why its not displaying on the monitor.  Any help will be very appreciated.

i did manage to get a little step further and get my mac to ask about resolutions but it still won't appear on the monitor

  • I've been having technical difficulties with my early 2011 13" macbook pro

I bought the computer about a day before I left for college, where I would have no access to an Apple store. From the second day I had it, I noticed that when I try to log on to my user, the screen is completely black. I have to move the mouse around to allow color squares to show up until I can find where to click to log on. Has anyone else had this problem? I have to deal with this every day and I have since taken it into the store but nobody has been able to help me. I did not get an extended warranty or anything because at the time it seemed like this was the only issue and I'm not the most tech-savy person so I didn't know what it was/still dont know if its a symptom of a bigger issue.
-Since then, my computer has started having more and more problems, like when I open the word app, my last ~six (number changes each time) recent documents will pop up. Each time I am done with word I close the document i am working on and Quit word, hoping that it wont happen again, but it does every time.
-Within the last two months, if I do a command-f to find a word on a webpage or document, the document will freeze up. The word that I am searching for will be highlighted but the highlighted word isn't where it actually is on the document, it'll be off to the side or overlapping another. If I try to scroll down, the lines of text will stack on top of each other and a few seconds later the page will freeze. Refreshing the page doesn't work and neither does the back arrow. I have to quit out of that tab and open a new one and then it will work.
-Another problem that I've faced over the last few years is that if I don't touch the computer for more than 5 minutes it will ask "Are you sure you want to shut down?" and have a countdown, and tries (sometimes successfully) to close all of my open applications. I have turned off the screesaver option and don't allow it to go to sleep in an attempt to stop this from happening. It still happens, even if I am watching a movie or listening to music. If I am backing up my computer to my G-drive, it will cancel the backup because of this if I don't stand over it the entire time and make sure this doesnt happen.
-Last year I had a problem where the mouse stopped responding to me all together and would click and open applications without me touching the track pad. I take very good care of my computer, don't allow it near steam or water or heat, back it up often, shut it down when not in use, and never drop it. I got this problem fixed and they had to replace my track pad.
-All of my applications take forever to open, and words often stack on top of eachother just from reading and scrolling.
-Even if the battery is full and I close my laptop, the battery will be empty when I turn it back on if I did not shut it down or put it to sleep.
-As of yesterday, web pages won't load and show me a grey screen, including the apple support page. I had to restart my computer three times for this page to finally load. I am in the process of writing a 15 page research paper, so I have quite a few science journals open and all of them showed me a blue-grey screen until I restarted my computer. After quitting all of the applications including safari, I shut down my computer and waited a few minutes. When I turned it back on all of the web pages re-opened even though I had not clicked the option when it asks.
I read here http://appleinsider.com/articles/14/01/16/owners-of-late-2011-macbook-pros-repor t-critical-gpu-failures-system-crashes that many people have been having problems with the same model, and since I'm not versed in the language of technology I was wondering if anyone can see if there are similarities between my problems and the ones on this article.
I'm on a tight budget and would rather not pay the $20 apple is requesting to fix the broken computer that they sold to me. If anyone has any idea of what I should do, advice is greatly appreciated. I have one more year of school and I would prefer to not have to buy a new laptop, although it isn't looking good for this one. I have some photos/videos of problems I've been having.

You can always take your Mac in and give it a check-up for free. What will cost you is the repairs you select to have preformed. I recommend shutting your Mac down before you go to bed. Problem solved. There is no need for you to keep it running if all applications are quit. Why do you need it on?
