Early 2011 Macbook external display issues after firmware update

I have a 2011 MBPro 15". After performing the firmware update in late April, I have continual issues when I connect my monitor. The screen is blank and I can move the mouse tap the keyboard etc. The display may come up for a scond and then it will close and the machine goes back to sleep. More wiggling and the process starts over.
If I raise the lid it may bing up the external display. Restarting is the only sure fix.
I also was unable to make a presentation today because the projector I was connected to would not show the MBP display.
I tried all the key combinations, detect display etc. and nothing.
Can I somehow go back to the prior firmware? Other solutions?
SMC Version (system):          1.69f1
EFI Driver Version:          01.00.521

I recently did a software update to my MacBook pro and had a similar issue, on restart it gets to the apple logo then just shuts off, after multiple hours on the phone with apple care they told me that it was coincidence that it happened at the same time as the update and it would be costly to repair as it was either something to do with display or logic board. I took my MacBook into my retail location I bought it from and was told that they have had MULTIPLE people bring in macbooks with the SAME issue (I live in a really small city so the amount of people is quite large proportion wise) and that they could fix the issue by remotely resetting the MacBook at a cost of $130-$150. Relatively cheap considering what I was fearing, but if this is a common problem related to Apples update why are we paying to fix it and why is apple support saying its something major???

  • MacBook Battery Shutdown issue after firmware update - anyone reinstalled?

Has anyone tried re-loading their OS? I have this issue too (though my battery lasts about 30 minutes) and this it powers down. I called apple (my SN starts with 8609) and told them I had a battery issue.
They were not much help - they indicated to me that I am over my 90 days for phone support and that I would have to bring my battery in to the store to have it tested. They went further to say if it is a firmware issue and not a battery that is technically software and I would be charged $50 for battery testing if it passed. And that if there was actually a battery issue they would replace under the 1 year hardware warrenty.
My dilemma now is should I try and wipe/reinstall the base OS (which I was told will undo the firmware upgrade).
I thought I would check here to see if anyone tried this before swapping battery???
I seems that the firmware update caused the problem but I am not sure if the battery is still good and the firmware is just crap or if the battery might still be ok. Has anyone wiped/re-installed the os and fixed this issue?

thats good news then in my case if its the logic board. The cpu whine has been driving me nuts(being excessively louder then most other macbooks with the whine) so I've been wanting to get the logic board replaced anyways.
Dont worry about the applecare though since we all should have it within the 1 year warenty still so all repairs should be covered.
Imo I'm considering purchasing the extended applecare protection plan if i can come up with the money( $249 is a bit steep for me) to get anouther 3 years of warrenty service expecialy with all the problems macbooks have been having.

  • Early 2011 MacBook Pro incredibly slow after installing Mavericks

I'm really hoping someone can help me out. As per the subject line, I installed Mavericks on day one (and learned my lesson!).
Since installing Mavericks my MacBook Pro runs incredibly slow. If I open the Mail App and Safari - it almost grinds to a halt. I have the "Memory Clean" App which I now have to run constantly (it appears to help a little) and I try to only launch one app at a time where possible, but it's not really pratical.
As an aside, my MacBook ran really well with Mountain Lion, so there's little doubt to my mind that Mavericks is the culprit.
I'd be eternally grateful for any help & advice :-)
I spotted other people advise running EtreCheck, here are my results:

    CleanMyMac is probably your problem.
    CleanMyMac is crapware.
Crapware is anything that purports to "optimize",  "clean", "accelerate", "monitor", or "protect" your Mac. These apps are unnecessary, poorly written, overpriced (if they were free, they'd still be overpriced), and harmful. The people who sell this stuff know this, but they keep selling it because people keep buying it. They can damage your OS and be difficult to uninstall.
I would try to uninstall it, but if that fails, you may have to erase your HD and do a clean install.

  • IMac won't start with Thunderbolt Display connected after firmware update

After updating my thunderbolt display firmware to version 1.2 this morning via the App Store, my mid-2014 iMac won't start up with the external display connected.  I can get the iMac to start up only by disconnecting the display's thunderbolt connector. After the iMac comes up, I can reconnect the display and everything appears to function normally.  I've tried several restarts and the iMac won't start up with the display connected.  Anyone else experience this?

  • Numerous issues after firmware updates

After installing the latest firmware updates I've noticed several issues develop. Firstly, the keyboard and mighty mouse have become less responsive. Particularly within certain applications, for example in iPhoto there is so much latency with the mouse that it is nearly impossible to scroll across an event icon so that it will display the photos within the event. Or in the few games I play the mouse scrolls with a very jerky motion.
Safari has also not been working well since the update. Certain links (java links maybe) simply no longer work. Or even within this forum, Topics are no longer displayed. I had use Camino to view these forums.
The only reason I suspect that these issues are related to the firmware updates is that all of these issues arose immediately after installing the firm ware updates.
So far I have repaired permissions and used OnyX to run all of the maintenance scripts and empty all of my caches, but no luck.
If anyone can suggest something more to try or provide any insight, that would be great.

Not only these issues, but my iMac has reverted to its original problem of having random freezes. Twice now I have had the screen completely lock while my music/video continued to play in the background, forcing me to force re-start and lose work.
I don't have a clue what Apple thought they were fixing but if anyone knows how to downgrade firmware or if it's even possible please post up!

  • Battery on MacBook doesn't work after Firmware Update

Hi - I updated my MacBook with the Firmware Update as soon as it popped up on the screen. My MB has been exhibiting the random shutdown problem. Everything worked fine until I restarted my computer, and now it will not operate without the AC adapter plugged in. If the power cord gets disconnected, the computer shuts down immediately. It is no longer portable. I've repaired permissions, which (of course) didn't fix the problem. Any ideas?

    Hello,
I've had my MacBook Pro with a solid state harddrive about a month.  Tonight I did an update (including a firmware update) and it has failed to boot.  The fans run at full speed, but nothing boots.  The screen remains blank.  What can I do?

  • New Macbook Air - display issues after waking from sleep

I have a 1 day old Macbook Air 13" (2013) --- when I wake the machine from sleep, the display shows horizontal / vertical bands for a couple of seconds before clearing up to show the desktop. Please see attached picture. This doesn't happen 100% of the time but I've been able to repeatedly replicate this at intervals. Does this seem like a hardware problem or an OS related issue? Thanks.

    SMC reset
    Shut down the computer.
Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if its not already connected.
On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time.
Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
Note: The LED on the MagSafe power adapter may change states or temporarily turn off when you reset the SMC.
Since you just bought it, contact Apple about making an exchange within 14 days or repair after 2 week period.

  • Brand new macbook pro retina issues after yosmite update

My Macbook pro retina was working fine until I had Mavericks, but after updating to Yosemite the following problems has started.
Touch pad stops responding now and then
    Fails to open launchpad sometimes
    Boot camp wizard is missing
Scrolling doesn't work quite often in Safari
Fan starts running when cpu is cool without load, but fails to run when hot while playing games
    Battery performance is dropped.
    Computer has become comparatively sluggish.
    Doesn't display 'about this mac'.

I did call them and it seems there is no solution except sending it back to them and getting a new one.
This is by far the most strange issue I have seen. Seems more like a hardware issue than software.
Thanks for you suggestion though. I will post an update ones this case gets resolved.

  • Display issue after Nvidia update

After installing the newest driver (ver 340.52) for my graphics card (Nvidia GeForce GT 625) through the HP Support Assistant, my display has been altered. Everything has a blue/gray tint - it's as if the color red and green no longer exist!
Cables and monitor are fine; I tried a system restore; I rolled the driver back to version 337.88 - all with no change.
I'm running Windows 7 on an HP Pavilion 500-205t, Intel Core i5-4570, 64-bit.
    Suggestions? Thanks!!

    Hi,
Avoid using adapters as they can and do fail.
Install the original NVIDIA driver that was posted for your PC.
If the above doesn't work then try the below suggestions:
Try the monitor and cable on another PC to eliminate those components as possible issues. Alternatively, try another known good monitor and known good cable.
Remove the video card and try the onboard video coming from the motherboard.

  • SA520W Configuration Access Issues After Firmware Update

The problem I'm having is a minor one, but a problem nonetheless.  I'm new to this company and took over from the previous IT guy who was let go so he's the one who set all this up.  We are using a Cisco 1841 which was provided by our ISP, and it is plugged in to the WAN port on the SA520W.  The SA520W has the static Wan connection info and it is what makes the connection.  Initially, we were able to access the SA520W configuration page with either it's default gateway 192.168.5.1 or with the IP 204.101.24.67, which is the static IP in the Optional WAN Port settings of the SA520W.  After upgrading our SA520W from 1.1.42 to 1.1.65, I am no longer able to access the router using 204.101.24.67.  I can only get in using the default gateway (192.168.5.1).  The Optional WAN port is not in use and never has been which confuses me - I took screenshots of all the settings before the upgrade and nothing has changed at all.  I guess I'm confused as to how I was initially able to access the router using 204.101.24.67, and why it stopped working after the firmware upgrade.  Does anyone have any suggestions?

I re-read your original Post; are you not using the WAN port also?  Did you try and remote in from a switch attached directly to the WAN/Optional WAN port?  I am asking as I have almost the exact same setup using an 1811 which is NATing the SA.  I could not reach it as the one-to-one NAT on the 1811 was not set correctly.  I also went through the firmware upgrade and experience the same issues you are.  I had the CISCO account with WAN access, and the upgrade removed that (after a lot of scratching).  However, my real problem was also the routing on the 1811.  I eventually had to get the guys to do a one-one NAT and remove all ACL and rules, but that does not mean it can't be done with it either.  Try reaching it with a switch or cable and see what happens.

  • Calendar display issue after iOS5 update

Everything went well with my first-gen iPad's iOS5 update. However, the issue I'm seeing now is that, sporadically, I will tap on the Calendar icon and there are no events displayed (the calendar always comes up in "Month" view). However, if I "turn the page" to the next or previous month and then come back to the current month, the events are all back. I turned iCloud off, thinking this was, perhaps, the culprit but this behavior still occurs. Again, this only happens maybe once out of every four or five launches of the calendar app but is still annoying nevertheless.iOS5 on my iPhone 4 is not doing this (not yet, at least...).
I'd be interested in knowing if anyone else is experiencing a similar thing and if so, is there something I'm missing to resolve it?

I just created a new thread about this. This has occurred twice now since iOS 5 on my original iPad. My default view is Month and when I launched the app on these occasions it opened to all dates blank. Frightened me at first thinking iCloud had wiped all my events out of my calendars however I discovered that if I changed the view to year, week or whatever the events were all there and remained when I switched back to month. So far this has only happened on my iPad and not on our iPhones all running iOS 5 or on our computers syncing through iCloud.
We need to leave feedback about this. Seems to be an iPad only issue.

  • WRT310N Setup issues after firmware update and factory reset

    Hi Everyone,
I recently updated my firmware to v2 on my WRT310N and found that I could no longer connect my PC to my router.  Whenever I run the setup software that came with the router it goes through all the steps but errors out when it looks for the router.  I think the error number I am getting is 322.
I tried to reset the router to the factory defaults, but I am still having the same issues.
When I plug my Cable modem directly into my PC I have no issues and have full internet connectivity.  I have tried to navigate manually to the 192.168.1.1 to do a manual setup of the router but I can't get to the router main page.
I'm running windows XP SP3 and I had no issues up until I did the firmware upgrade.  I can't think of what I am doing wrong and am stuck.
    Any thoughts?

Make sure that the cable modem is connected to the Internet port of the router. Your computer should be connected to one of the 4 Ethernet ports on the router. If your computer is connected to the port 1 of the router then port 1 light on the router will lit up. Also make sure that the Power light on the router is steady and not flashing. If the power light on the router is flashing then try to reset and power cycle the router again.
Once the power light on the router is steady then check the IP address of the computer.
Go to Start >> Click Run >> Type cmd and click Ok. You will get the command prompt window opened. In the command prompt type ipconfig and hit Enter on your keyboard. You will see the IP address of your computer. The IP address of the computer will be like 192.168.1.xxx and Default gateway will be 192.168.1.1.
Now open the Internet browser and in the address bar type the number 192.168.1.1.
It will ask you to enter the User name and password for the router. Leave the user name blank and in the password type admin. It will open the Linksys router setup page.
Under the setup tab you will find Mac address Clone sub-tab.  Enable the MAC addres clone and click on the button Clone my PC's MAC. Save the changes. Try to access the Internet on your main computer.
If not able to access the Internet then unplug the power cable to the router and modem. Plug in the power to the modem first. Wait for a minute and then plug in the power to the router. Try to access the Internet.
Once your main computer is able to go on line then you can change the wireless settings of the router.

  • Stacks issue after firmware update 1.2, won't fan anymore only grid.

This issue was resolved when I updated to the 10.5.2 Leopard OS but now that I've updated the firmware with the most recent update yesterday the stacks function in the dock went back to just being able to show the grid format and when I choose the list format it comes up in a standard list (menu) view not the nice new fan view.
Has anyone else had this issue yet? Has anyone been able to fix it? I can see from the install log that there were errors and it looks like they were specifically with the dock/stacks portion but I'm not code savvy enough to know how to fix them.
Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Well, at the risk of insulting your level of expertise - is your Dock on the side instead of the bottom? There's no fan available with side-docked Docks, either in function or the popup menu.
If that's not the case, try trashing the Dock's plist and see if that makes it behave.
Please keep in mind we see many, many beginners or otherwise naive users asking questions which have simple answers, and no insult is intended when a suggestion is made that you've already tried; it's hard to assess a writer's knowledge level. When your original post said "and when I choose the list format it comes up in a standard list (menu) view not the nice new fan view" it made it hard to determine your level for 2 reasons: You referred to the "new fan view" which is not new in 10.5.2, the upgrade you said you just installed, and if you "chose the list format" why would you expect it to show you a fan view? That's probably why Bruce told you to select "fan view". It was probably just a less-than-perfect sentence on your part, but you might be able to see, in retrospect, that it sounded a little newbie-ish.
Bruce tried to help you and we can only hope that your reaction does not make him hesitate to help someone else lest he get snapped at again!

  • N8 - Picture Browser Issue After Firmware Update

Since I´ve updated to PR1.1 I have a lot of tearing and blurriness when I see my pics at max zoom in the phone´s own pic browser.
Pics viewed in my PC are just fine.
I´ve tried to reinstall the FW 2 times already, but the problem remains.
    Details from my FW version:
    PR1.1 013.016.C11.01
    Language: 013.016.34.01
    PC: 0599221

I also have the same problem. I have two Bluetooth headsets, Nokia BH-101 and Sony Ericsson MW600. Both worked just fine before Anna update. But after installing ANNA, both hands free units giving problems. After couple of calls its simply not responding, and phone get stuck and touch screen not responding to any commands.
After disconnecting the BT handsfree, sometimes phone starts to work fine but in rare cases, it shows as a headset connected even after disconnecting the BT headset.
And when you restart the phone, its start working again with BT. But not for so long. This is a real headache. Please give a solution.
