Early 2011 model fresh install of 10.6.7 upgrade to 10.6.8 fails

Hi,
I'm new to the mac world and so far I'm having some learning pains.
I just bought a macbook pro (early 2011) with i5 processor.
I do a fresh install of OSX 10.6.7 with the disc that comes with it and everything works great.  BUT.. the automatic software updater tells me there is an update to OSX 10.6.8.
I allow this update to install and then it asks me to reboot (which I do).
Again, at this point everything is working fine.  The system comes back up and I can do whatever I want.
The problem happens on the NEXT reboot.  On the next reboot the system won't get past the apple logo.. it just hangs there forever (and the system gets very warm).
I can boot into safe mode, but I cannot seem to actually fix the problem.  I've used "option v" but it seems to freeze at different points and I don't see any obvious error messages.
I've tried the default software update, and the combo update.
I've read that this might be due to the sandy bridge drivers.  I do notice there is a special "10.6.7 update for early 2011 macbook pros" update out there... but I don't see anything for "10.6.8"
I don't know what to do next.  I don't really want to stick with 10.6.7 forever...
Any help would be appreciated.

First try the 10.6.8 combo updater. Sometimes the automatic software updaters miss something.

  • Can Macbook Pro Early 2011 model support 16 Gb RAM?

I own an early 2011 model macbook pro and was looking to upgrade the ram. I know it says that the maximum is 8 Gb but i have seen outside sources telling me that 16 Gb is fine. Is it possible or safe for my laptop to do this?

Yes, your model will accept 16gB of RAM. See specs below.
Maximum Memory     16 GB (Actual) 8 GB (Apple)
    Memory Slots     2 - 204-pin PC-10600 (1333 MHz) DDR3 SO-DIMM

I changed my wireless broadband to a landline-base DSL wifi and it works like a charm. Sun was the culprit even you fiddle with its router and disable firewall, it won't work.
try changing yours too and let me know how it goes.

Installing RAM in a 2011-2012 MacBook Pro
There is really only one way to install RAM into a 2011-2012 MacBook Pro and while there are hundreds of DIY videos online, I just like this one, found on YouTube, by “macmixing”.
Note that there is a difference in the RAM that should be used in 2011 and 2012 models.
    2011 models must use:
    •204-pin PC-10600 (1333 MHz) DDR3 SO-DIMM
    And 2012 models must use:
    •204-pin PC3-12800 (1600 MHz) DDR3 SO-DIMM
    So here's the video:
Remember that the 13", 15" and 17" 2011 models (early or late) and the 13" and 15" mid-2012 non-Retina models can handle 4GB, 8GB or (unofficially, but, believe me, it works) 16GB of RAM. There are, in my opinion, only two 100% Mac-compatible vendors out there: Crucial and OWC. I really can't recommend any other brands, even though it may work, as these are the only brands that I've personally used in quite a while. Also remember to stay away from any RAM that is a “value” brand - Macs are picky about RAM and often these value RAM modules just don’t work very well.
    Good luck,

  • MacBook Pro 17" Early 2011 Model: Auto Shutdown/Restart Problem

    Hey guys!
This is my first time to sign in, join the community, and ask a question or create a discussion. FYI, I really have little knowledge on tech stuff so please bear with me. Here's my problem, and I hope you can give out your suggestions:
I have a MacBook Pro 17" Early 2011 Model which I have upgraded to OS X Mountain Lion.
A month or two ago, it had started shutting down or restarting at random times. As time passed, this problem became more frequent.
I finally decided to have it checked at Digital Hub, a licensed Apple distributor. After almost a week, they've finally diagnosed that the problem is with my battery. I got my MacBook pro back around 2 (two) weeks ago, and ever since then I had to use an outlet in order for it and myself to work properly. Right now, I'm still saving up to purchase new batteries.
Recently, however, I've noticed that my MacBook Pro auto restarts even when plugged. Take note, RESTART and no longer shutting down completely. Upon further trials, I've finally concluded that it does so only during the use of heavy programs such as Diablo 3, Final Cut Pro X, and when rendering with iMovie. I have yet to try with Adobe products, particularly with Lightroom and Photoshop, and see if it does the same. But more or less, that's what I've noticed so far.
Given that I still haven't purchased the battery yet, I know it's still vague to know the real probelm/solution. But with the given situations, what are you views on this matter? Please let me know. It'd be of great help. Thank you and I hope to hear from you soon!

Thanks for taking so much time in helping me.
    Just an update:
    2 loops/passes done - no errors.
Called up Digital Hub and talked to the technician, he says there are 3 possible problems:
    1. Battery (which is still inside the laptop) may cause some disturbances with the electric current
    2. Software related - most likely re-formatting may be needed
    3. Video card may have failed, which means complete change of the logic board ----> worst case
I'm crossing my fingers that it's either of the first two.

  • HT201300 What cable should be used to connect a macbook pro, 13 inch early 2011 model to an external projector so it will display the computer screen image through the projector?

What cable should be used to connect a macbook pro, 13 inch, early 2011 model to an external projector so the project displays the image on the computer screen?

You will need a cable or adapter with a minidisplay connection for the MBP.  That will be inserted in the Thunderbolt port.  The other end is dependent upon the connections of the projector which you have not listed.
    Ciao.

  • MBP 13 in Early 2011 Model OS Upgrade Options?

MBP 13 in Early 2011 Model. Currently running OS X 10.7.5 (Lion), but want to upgrade to 10.8 or newer. What is the best option? I've heard Yosemite hasn't worked too well for many users and just want to upgrade to at least 10.8 because many video editing applications require it now. As an added piece of info, I plan to upgrade my RAM from 4 GB to 8 GB.

  • Comapatibility of samsung ssd to macbookpro 13inch early 2011 model.

Comapatibility of samsung ssd to macbookpro 13inch early 2011 model.
Is macbook pro 13inch early 2011 compatible with 1tb samsung evo 840 or 512gb samsung evo pro 840?
    Thank you.

    romdogg,
I have a 512 GB Samsung 840 PRO in my 13-inch Mid 2010 MacBook Pro, and it’s perfectly compatible. Since you have an Early 2011 model, it would run even better in yours, since your MacBook Pro supports SATA III burst throughput, while mine only supports SATA II.

  • I bought a macbook pro from someone and want to clear all of the past persons stuff, how can I do that without a cd?  specs macbook pro 8.1 with OS 10.6.6. early 2011 model. please help...

I have a macbook pro i bought from someone and I need to clear all this other persons info, i don't have a the cd by the way so thats the challenge I'm against.  its a early 2011 macbook pro 8.1 and it has 10.6.6 snow leopard on it and i would like to get it to mountain lion but didn't know if downloading that would clear the memory as well?  any ideas?...

1: Backup any data off the machine. Download the free MacTracker
2: Apple menu > About this Mac > More Info > Macbook Pro 3,1 or like model number, punch it into Mactracker.
3: Find out what OS X version came originally on your machine. how far you can go.
Things to consider before upgrading OS X
4: Inexpensive. $  If < 10.6.3, then order the 10.6.3 disks by calling Apple via phone.
5: More money $$. If > 10.6.2 then call Apple ia phone for the machine specific versions as the 10.6.3 retail version won't work.
6: Follow these links to wipe and install
How do I securely delete data from the machine?
How to erase and install Snow Leopard 10.6
7: Run Software update to get to 10.6.8
8: Check hardware requirements for 10.7 or 10.8 using MacTracker , install more RAM if need be. $$$$.
9: Optional, more $$$.  Run AppStore and install 10.8, or call Apple for 10.7 (better stay on 10.6 if 10.7 is the best you can do)
Must follow about using the disks to wipe the machine of previous owners data squirreled all over the thing.
Only thing "free" is the advice.

  • Maximum RAM on early 2011 model

I have an early 2011 Macbook Pro with 2.2 GHz Intel Core i& processor.  It currently has the standard 4GB RAM, but I want to upgrade.  All literature I can find says it can take a maximum of 8GB of RAM, but I've had a few other sources that say it can take 16GB.  Can anyone confirm what it can actually max out at?  Thank you.

Niel, thanks for the quick response.  That is great news.  When buying RAM, do I just need ot make sure it is the right kind of RAM already installed?  For example, I currently have 2X4 GB RAM which are DDR3 1333MHz.  So I just need to by 2X8 GB RAM with the DDR3 specification as well as teh 1333MHz?  Or is there another specification I need to look for (i.e. is RAM mac/PC specific)?
That being the case, would this Corsair unit meet my needs? http://www.amazon.com/Corsair-DDR3-1333MHz-Laptop-Memory-Module/dp/B006ON5KQQ/re f=sr_1_17?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1352186388&sr=1-17&keywords=DDR3+Laptop+Memo ry+Corsair+8GB+1333+MHz+mac

  • I have a MacBook pro 13 early 2011 model. For some reason it stopped working and everytime I try to start it up it beeps and does nothing. Did it happen to someone else. What's wrong and how do I fix it?

My Mac won't start, all it does is beep and I don't know what's wrong

    Most likely a RAM issue.
    How many beeps?
Click here >  Power On Self-Test Beep Definition - Part 2
1 beep = no RAM installed
2 beeps = incompatible RAM types
3 beeps = no good banks
4 beeps = no good boot images in the boot ROM (and/or bad sys config block)
5 beeps = processor is not usable
