Early Mac Pro reboots fan kicks on
Mac Pro early 2008 reboots and fan kicks turns on high speed during reboot. I have tried dusting, resetting SMC, power cords, different outlets, pulled out ramm and reinserted it, restored energy saving defaults, reset pramm, ran disk utility. Any Advice?
Hi,
Turned on computer this morning and after 15 minues it rebooted and fans came on. I restarted the computer in safe mode and all seemed well. I restarted the computer and it rebooted twice then the fans came on and are still on. I will be able to use the computer all day with no problems as long as the fans are on high. I followed the directions on kernel panic and am not for sure if what I pasted below is the information you requested. It was in the DiagnosticReports folder and had the same time as when the computer crashed. Thanks!

Windows 7 Install fails on early Mac Pro
Just wondered if anyone else has experienced a blue screen failure during installation of Windows 7 RC 32-bit on an early Mac Pro (pre-2008). I get almost to the very end of the install during the copy files/settings phase (last one), and after a reboot, Win7 seems to start, but eventually crashes with a blue screen.
This is on a separate hard drive formatted to all NTFS. I've tried an install from the DVD from scratch (freshly formatted drive), and then again as an upgrade from a Vista installation (this all took many hours - and I do this for fun?). All with 32 bit since I don't have access to 64 bit drivers. But the result was uniform in both cases. The same version installed perfectly with vmWare Fusion.
So I suspect some issue with my Mac Pro Quad, which is an early, first generation version. I know others have had success with Win7 on a Mac Pro, but maybe on 2008 and later versions?
I have yet to try Win7 64-bit. Hopefully will get cured by final release, but would just like to know if anyone else with early Mac Pros have had success.I don't think you really need to worry about 64-bit drivers - I don't have any Apple software or Boot Camp.
You don't mention RAM, disk drives, or graphics card, or any other hardware and whether you tried w/o.
I would warn that our early Mac Pro will have to work around the EFI boot menu that Windows 7 RC x64 presents.
I've had my 7300GT culprit; a disk drive that had to be reformatted in Vista; pull the 4 x 512MB of RAM (Apple) that was beginning to trigger a red light. So there are various items. And they all took hours to diagnose, swapping hardware; lots of head scratching.
There is no cure except to get around hurdles. We are stuck in EFI 32-bit land. May have to / want to buy 10.6 to get newer drivers, but that won't add 64-bit support. You can if you must, get 64-bit Boot Camp. I feel it is optional.
If you can install Vista, then install Windows to another drive, leaving Vista alone. Burn the ISO to DVD and copy the DVD back to a 8GB NTFS partition and run Windows Install Setup off that is fast and neat.
Setup a drive with room for Vista, Windows 7 RC, 8GB ISO partition, and data partition. Or expand to multiple drives.
Burn the DVD slower. There are other tips and ideas.

I've found Kaspersky 2010 beta and license from 2009 Internet Suite to probably be the best I've tested so far in that area.
Fusion use to use Windows Server 2008, maybe it got updated to include a better profile, or it was only x64 that had any problems. Sun VirtualBox is another. With that, you can modify the DVD to allow booting easier if needed.
I have Vista SP1, then put in Vista SP2-RC (same drive) and for Windows 7 I have one install that is for testing anything new first, and another that I use daily regularly - and prefer to use 7.7100 RC now instead of Vista.
Installing Windows while booted in Windows is neat, can be fast, but first find the hardware issue. Most BSOD is drivers and need to safe boot and uninstall drivers, but you may not have gotten even that far. And don't until you have a restore point, and be ready to reboot from Vista or 7 DVD to repair Windows. -
Geforce 9800 GT Running On Early Mac Pro (EFI32)
I arrived at this point from another thread, which is here:
http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=8988306#8988306
To make a long story short, I now have a 9800 GT running safely on my early Mac Pro.
It is a single GPU solution and it works reliably under both Mac OS X and Boot Camp Vista Ultimate 32 and is the fastest GPU (according to the Open GL benchmarks) I've ever seen on any Mac Pro. Absolutely no artifacts under either environment and the Crysis series is easily handled in Boot Camp. Still testing though...
Here is the specific GPU that's now installed:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814187026
The dual fans make it insanely cool. It's also quiet and while perhaps a useless observation, its setup of copper heat sinks and connectors, etc., appears very practically done while also being a kind of attractive arrangement as well.
My 9800 GT is a reflashed PC board by bruinmacs:
http://shop.ebay.com/merchant/bruinmacsW0QQ_nkwZQQ_armrsZ1QQ_fromZQQmdoZ
As for installation to replace my also very fast 8800 GTS, I had to remove the side rail (two screws) and the daughter board (small lcd display) from the standard 9800 GT so it could fit in the lowest slot. The small lcd is not helpful for us Mac Pro owners.
I don't know for sure, but I believe this board by bruinmacs will run in any Mac Pro (it is PCIE 2).
FYI...
Cheers,
tyvolThanks for the reminder hatter...
I think that you are correct that the ROM's on these reflashed PC GPU's should be targeted to either the EFI32 or EFI64 Mac Pro version.
I forgot to mention that in addition to reflashing the 9800 GT with their ROM update for my EFI32 Mac Pro, bruinmacs also first increased the ROM to 128k.
Don't know for sure (bruinmacs would, though) but it seems to me that with the proper EFI32 or EFI64 ROM reflash, this 9800 GT could work in any current Mac Pro.
Cheers,
tyvol -
Help Installing Windows 7 64 Bit on Early Mac Pro
As previously noted, Wind 7 RC 64 bit DVD will not boot on early Mac Pro. I installed Win 7 64 bit on a dedicated hard drive as follows: 1) I booted into Vista 64bit successfully 2) I installed Win 7 64 bit on a second black disk, as noted above 3)All files installed correctly I think since Win 7 will begin to boot showing the Windows 7 startup screen 4) However, the startup screen will then disappear and the screen goes black, indicating a failed boot. When I engage the option screen (with primary Mac drive installed) during boot, no Windows disk is shown, indicating that boot camp does not recognize the Win 7 disk as a valid startup drive.
Has anyone successfully installed Win 7 64 bit on an early Mac Pro?? I would appreciate any help in accomplishing this. Also, is there any reason Apple has not provided an EFI firmware update for first generation MacPros?Burn a DVD with Windows 7 RC 32-bit which you can boot from.
Try Safe Boot also.
From Vista you can install 7 on another hard drive. You can also copy the DVD to 6GB partition and run the install setup off that while in Vista.
Mixing ATI and Nvidia probably still doesn't work (may when 7 ships).
Windows is more aware of disk I/O errors than Mac OS.
Keep your system basic, don't have anything connected or installed you don't need (like PCIe controllers).
Vista SP1 or later, 64-bit also looks for EFI64/UEFI 2.x which causes the "Choose 1 or 2" boot menu and which 2008 Mac Pro (and 2009) work with.
You aren't the first or only person to run into this, and there are people running on 2006 Mac Pro.

Windows 7 64 bit on Early Mac Pro
I finally got Win 7 64 bit installed on early Mac Pro. However, I have one significant issue remaining. I have an Apple Cinema 23 connected via ADC to DVI adapter; my video card is a Nvidia Quadro FX 4500. I can boot into Safe Mode without problem since the video card is recognized as a basic VGA monitor. When I boot into "normal" startup, I see the Starting Windows logo but the screen turns black when it boots into the Win 7 OS. The boot up is successfull since I can shut down normally with the keyboard. ( I should mention I have had no problems running Vista 32 bit--no display problems.) In device manager, no problem is shown with the Nvidea driver.
Any suggestions to solve my problem?? Thanks. Are you able to - and is there a Windows 7 WHQL driver?
I know in the past automatic Windows Update wasn't trusted or the best, though I think with 7RC that is changed, but getting the standalone driver installed would be best bet.
And, you probably want/need to uninstall any driver that was installed, whether by Apple or Microsoft, and use one from Nvidia.
Driver Sweeper 2.0 is also strongly recommended to delete and remove drivers after uninstall, while in Safe Mode on next boot, before installing new drivers - especially if having trouble. Might even want to disconnect from 'net to prevent auto update/install for that.
PS: what keyboard shortcut to shutdown works? I need that one. -
Mac Pro (2014) fan runs constantly
That is correct. Very astute observation.
¿Do you have any problems with your Mac that Readers could help you with? -
Early Mac Pro EFI and 64 bit Question
I have an early Mac Pro 2006 and have been unable to successfully install Windows 7 64 bit due to EFI incompatibility (after installation was able to boot to safe mode but unable to otherwise boot; device manager shows that MacPro incompatible).
My question is why Apple has not provided a firmware update for the early MacPros that includes the newer EFI version present in current generation MacPros??Let's see, different motherboard and you don't think that matters? the front side bus and memory operate differently, the PCI slots are configured different.
You can't just "update" firmware to cross those bridges. And I'm sure there is even more involved between EFI32 and UEFI 2.x (EFI64).
Vista SP1 wasn't out in 2006, and UEFI wasn't finalized and supported yet.
Apple never provided 64-bit drivers for Windows on the 1st generation Mac Pro, and none of the iMac series has had UEFI or 64-bit endorsements.
You figured out how to install Windows 7 from inside Vista, and probably how to get Boot Camp 64-bit. All you probably need is a small Vista or Windows 7 32-bit system partition to carry you forward. -
Upgrade early Mac Pro to 802.11n?
Is it possible to upgrade my early Mac Pro 2.6 quad Xeon from 802.11g to 802.11n? What parts are required? Source? Cost? User-installable?
Thanks for any help. There is an upgrade card from Apple.

Compatible HD for Early Mac Pro 2008
Hello All,
I have two failing drives in my early Mac Pro 2008 and its time to find some replacements. The drives I need to replace are 1TB in size but I was looking to get something larger being 1.5TB. I read on a site that this version of Mac Pro supports a maximum of 4TB accross all the four bays which would essentially mean a maximum of 1TB for each Bay. Here is the link to the site: http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/mac_pro/faq/mac-pro-how-to-upgrade-hard-dr ives-what-type-supported.html
Question I have, is whether its safe to add two 1.5TB drives (I also have a 640GB for the boot and 500GB additional data drive) or should I stick with 1TB drives? Also, is there any advantage in going beyond the 3Gb/s Serial ATA spec as I would suspect the faster drives would not be utilized to their capacity given the older data path in this machine.
Any help/advice would be appreciated and thanks in advance!
Cheers,
Vin.You can put any make and any size 3.5" drive in all the bays in any combination. Also SATA 3's will work but of course at not their full maximum speed as you mentioned so SATA 2's are OK.
As an example, if you got 4 3TB's you could stuff them in there for a max of 12TB. Bit of overkill unless you really need all that space!
Personally I like Western Digital 1TB and 2TB blacks.
You might also want to consider using an SSD as your boot drive.
Update: I took a look at that site you linked. That 4TB limit is the max any one drive bay can support, not the total capacity across all 4 bays. -

I own one of the first generation Mac Pros 2.66ghz quad, 2006.
I've read that you can use up to 2TB or 3TB of hard drive space inside the machine. I suspect this is understated. So what else is new?
I currently have 3 x 500 gb drives and 1 x 2TB drive in my machine.
I'd actually like to put in 3 more 2TB drives. Has anyone done this?
Any thoughts?No, not really.
A 3TB HD can be troublesome for BootCamp use, since the Windows partition is put in the area above 2TB and the Master Boot Record (MBR) Windows still uses has trouble / is incompatible with adressing harddisk space above 2.2TB.
With some RAID setup and IIRC the Apple Raid 3TB harddisks are shown and using also only 2.2TB.
So, in essence if you stay away from BootCamp Windows and RAID 4 x 3TB also work fine in your MP.
And I had 2TB HDs in my own 2006 MP before I sold it and got me a 2010 MP.

Mac Pro PSU fan not spinning...
System: Mac Pro (early 2009)
After a while the system shuts itself down, and then repeatedly does so while trying to boot back up. After letting it sit a couple of hours, it boots back up, but again starts shutting itself down.
I opened it up and noticed the PSU fan was not spinning - which eventually caused the PSU to overheat and power off.
I ran a hardware test, and got the following error...
4MOT/1/40000002: PS-0
I searched on the Internet for this error, and it seems (I assume) that this error means the PSU fan is bad, but I plugged it into another fan port on the motherboard and it worked fine. I then, plugged one of the other fans into the PSU Fan port and it did not work.
I reset the SMC.
I reinstalled the OS (Snow Leopard)
I loaded "Fan Control" software (PSU Fan stays at 0 RPM and cannot be manually adjusted.)
At this point I'm guessing it's either the power supply itself (which I find hard to believe), or the PWM controller for the PSU Fan is not working. To get around the issue, I'm ordering a "simple" (2 wire for power only) fan to replace the built-in fan and a manual (knob) speed controller. (Total of $10, until the real issue can be determined.)
If anyone could help any further, I'd appreciate it.

Wanted to add reason I didn't think it is the PSU...
Red LED flashes when power cord is plugged in and again when it's unplugged.
PSU PWROK LED is green
5V STBY LED is amber
Tags: Mac Pro, 2009, PSU, power supply, fan, PWMMost of the fans in the cabinet are under control of the SMC software. They do indeed run full speed with no software intervention, as a fail-safe mechanism. (Software crashes, fans roar at top speed.)
A program like "SMC fan control" can provide visibility to the temperatures, and SOME control of the base fan speeds. My recollection is that the PSU fans 'do their own thing' (unlike the main cabinet fans) and are not software controllable. Components inside the power supply determine the temperatures and adjust its own fan speeds.
If that is the case, when used in combination with your analysis above, you should be able to trace back to an output amplifier (intended to modulate fan speed) that is DEAD and stuck at an output that is telling the fan not to spin. I would hope a 29 cent component was responsible.
A short in the backplane seems exceedingly unlikely. Most of what the power supply does is directly onto its discrete wiring harness. The main DC harness to the motherboard uses high-current connectors. Using more than one of those for signaling or fan speed seems more wasteful than power supply designers could tolerate. -
Help please , New Mac Pro and fans that they do not increase of rpm's
Hello everyone.
I recently purchased a Mac Pro Quad Core 2.66 Ghz Nehalem. Without doing anything, just with firefox, the CPU temperature is 30 º, up there either.
But if I run programs that require lots of CPU power, the fans are still turning the same rpm's. I have seen temperatures of 62 º and the fans do not go hand in 600rpm (Boosta usually always do what you do at 857rpm. It does not move). All this I have checked with iStat.
I installed the smcfancontrol and I'm clearly not the fault of the fans, because this program can go make your rpm's Mac Pro, but, by itself, does not. I come from the PC world and am well aware that the motherboard is responsible for regulating the speed of the fans, depending on temperature.
I called Apple and Spain have told me that is normal but the response seems a little insulting to my intelligence and experience with computers. I do not know what to do and do not know if this is normal.
I can help?
Thanks and best regards
PS: Sorry for my English, I do not have much experience with English.

As for iStat, I would rely on Hardware Monitor, it is more accurate, or the free version which is Temperature Monitor.
SmcFanControl was updated to 2.2 recently but I didn't check to see if it supports Mac Pro 2009 "Nehalem." It may or may not.
Depending on your room and environment, air ventilation, 30-62 are reasonable.

The trouble with fans and thermal sensors is they can wait too long to kick in and is better to boost the fans 200-300 rpm to keep air flowing and temperature cool, rather than wait for heat to build up inside.
There is a System Management Controller (SMC) that handles fans, sensors, power management.

Not everyone likes to be asked what they don't know, and can respond inappropriate. They probably just didn't know.

Mac Pro Reboot or Restart Problems
I have a Mac Pro G5 that's about 3 months old and whenever I do a reboot (either from the Apple menu or ControlAppleDelete), the MacPro immediately goes to a black screen and sounds began to emunate from the drive area like it's trying to catch. The only way to stop the sound and really reboot is to unplug the G5. Now, sometimes the warning screen appears which mentions there is like 2 minutes before it restarts, but most of the time, it doesn't even appear. Regardless if I get the warning or not, the black screen and skipping sounds always does. I've reported it Apple and they've suggested taking it into a Apple Certified Center as it's still under warrenty.
Side note: a couple times in the last few days, the G5 has gone to sleep and I could not wake it without having to unplug. Finally, I set the hard drive to Never go to Sleep in the Energy Saver prefs. I think that might be working because it hasn't happened since.
I don't think its the "85% hard drive is full" or the RAM is suspect (2 gigs installed when purchased from Apple). It's perplexing. We have an identical G5 in the office that is perhaps 2 months older and it doesn't do this when I've tested it.
While I don't reboot or restart often, my concern is the problem could began to surface on initial start ups. I'm waiting for the local Apple store to return my call but I thought I'd check with a Discussion Thread as well. Thanks for your time!+Do those items point to something you installed or use? Aladdin?+
The only tie to Aladdin I can find is StuffIt Expander, which I don't believe I installed directly on this Mac Pro. However, I did check the Startup Script on my current G4 Mac and it does include the reference to Aladdin in the Startup and on the G4, it says it was successful. On this Mac Pro, it states it was not.
+There are three tabs in Disk Warrior. Directory you can hold OPTION and it changes to REBUILD... and then you can click on SCAVENGE. There is a file repair tab. And you can manually check hard drive status. I would not use anything extra for drive status and smart. Too many of a good thing.+
I have already rebuilt the Directory with Disk Warrior. Should I do it again using the OPTION>SCAVENGE approach?
+When you click on manual drive check, it writes to the system log what the count of bad blocks used, attempts, and stuff.+
I did the manual drive check but cannot seem to find the system log related to logging this actual event. However, the description box did say the drive checked out okay.
+I do think it needs some bench time with AppleCare as to what is up.+
I tend to agree. It would ease my mind knowing that someone who can read these System logs might be able to decipher these log events. A couple of things I'm wondering could be causing some problems: about the time all this reboot issues had started, I had manually changed my Computer Name in the Sharing pane of System prefs. But its my understanding this is where I could change it without causing any issues. Secondly, I had recently downloaded and installed a mp3 encoding program called iLas, as a alternative to the iTunes so-so mp3 encoder. It does tend to run from an AppleScript-- could this be a culprit?
Thanks again for your help! -
What do I do with Mac Pro desktop fans running without extra heat?
My Mac Pro desktop has begun running the fans without the computer being hot or even warm. Is it a hardware fix? I tried shutting down and unpluging for 15 sec. to reset the SMC. No help.
Pushed power button before removing power cord for 15 sec. restart
I should have said, but felt it clear enough... Hit power button WHILE or AFTER UNPLUGGED and before connecting power again.
Apple has changed and rewritten its "How To" article at least 4-5 times just for the Mac Pro section in the last 7.5 yrs.
Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
https://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
Using the reset button on a motherboard is always an option and was in the first set of directions, with arrow pointing to the exact button and its location back in 2006-7.
Just unplugging is... not effective, and hitting power button while unplugged, helps, some. -
Mac Pro 2013 fan speeds up to maximum after restart.
My brand new Mac Pro 2013, hanged on shutdown..
so I had to restart by using the button on the cylinder, when it restarted it sounded like a vacuum cleaner, the fan started to spin fast and didn't stop anymore and my mac was suddenly very slow :S.
After restarting the mac pro works fine again! this happened 2 times now...
Already called with apple they said that i should try and work with it and see if the problem comes back again.
Maybe any of you knows what could be wrong.??????
I'm mainly using the machine for Logic Pro X and sometimes for some video editing.
