Early Model Dual 2ghz having display issues.

I leave my computer on 24/7. Recently I've noticed that once a week I come in and turn on my LCD to find that the display is either stuck in 'power saver' mode and won't come on, or comes on and the screen is 'jumbled'.
Rebooting doesn't solve the issue. Usually I'll have to shut down, and wait about 5-10 minutes before booting the machine back up and it will again recognize the display.

Sounds exactly like what happened to my 24". The grapphics card is going bad. Most likely it will need to be replaced which can by done DIY for $250-$350. When mine first went bad I was able to use SMC Fan Control to increase the speed of the CPU fan, which would stop the freezing. Over time I needed to gradually increase the speed of the fan to keep using it. It lasted another 3 months or so before the card totally failed.
All 24" iMacs had removable GPUs, so repair is possible without replacing the entire Logic Board. There probably won't be very many choices as to what card you can use. Sometimes the cards pop up on eBay, sometimes they are cheaper elsewhere. Although it uses an industry standard graphics slot, it simply won't work with a graphics card that's not specifically made for your model. When the NVIDIA chip went bad in my 2008 24" I chose to replace it with a cheaper and technically inferior ATI chip, because the same thing could have happened again, and graphics performance is not a big concern of mine. I got it from cwioutlet.com.

hi, we are using mac mini's for our developement purpose. connecting the same through using Real VNC. Mac mini's are late 2009 and 2010. Now we have upgraded them to 10.8.5. after upgrading having display issues after launching the simulators, we are unable to view the icons we need to move the simulator (into different places) to view the icons.
Also we are having Mac book pro's (Late 2009 & 2010) after upgrading them to 10.8.5. Unable to launch the mac, getting only white screen with apple icon.
Let me know is there any specific Hardware (Graphic Cards) we need to use for the same.
Please provide me the early solutions.
    Regards,
    Suresh.

    Hi, try this first...
Bootup holding CMD+r, or the Option/alt key to boot from the Restore partition & use Disk Utility from there to Repair the Disk, then Repair Permissions.

I have an iphone 4s that is having display issues. If I turn the phone on, it vibrates to acknowledge it successfully turned on but the screen stays solid black. I can plug the phone into my computer and itunes will recognize the phone as well. However, itunes can not do anything with the phone because the phone is locked and I can not unlock the phone because the screen is black.
    >CURVEBALL!!!<
The screen does work though! Through trial and error along side a little troubleshooting, I was able to figure out that the screen will cut on after the phone dies completely. The phone has to die completely with no battery power left. Then if I plug the phone into a charge and wait a while for it to charge, the phone will turn on like nothing was ever even wrong with it. I charge the phone up to like 30% and turn it off then bam the phone turns on but the screen is solid black again.
I am currently in the process of waiting for the phone to die and when I turn the phone back on I am going to completely remove the auto-lock and lock code off of the phone for the time being.
    Any other suggestions? Please help!

Sounds like the device was dropped at some point and damaged as a result.
Take it to Apple for evaluation and a replacement.

  • IMac 20" Mid 2007: Upgraded to 10.6.4 - Now having display issues

Recently, I upgraded my iMac from Tiger to Snow Leopard. I purchased a box set from Buy.com that included Snow Leopard, iLife '09 and iWork '09. Didn't seem to have any trouble with any of the installs. However, now I'll be working on the machine and all of a sudden my screen will go either black, white, fuzzy lines, or vertical lines. I would say 90% of the time the screen goes black. I can't bring it back without pressing and holding the power button down to do a hard reboot.
I've reset the SMC and the PRAM. Doesn't seem to help.
I have 2GB of RAM on this machine and didn't really have a problem until the upgrade. Any ideas on how to fix this problem?
It's becoming more and more of a problem.
    Thanks!

Ok... took some time to further research this issue. Didn't find much in the way of concrete diagnosis until a friend of mine who is a fellow Mac user. Here's his situation: He had the iMac white model that was released right before mine (the first released aluminum model). He said he had recently upgraded his iMac to Snow Leopard using the same box set product (Snow Leopard, iLife 09, iWork 09) that I purchased for upgrading my Mac. He then described to me exactly what my computer's symptoms (lines in the screen, system freezes, black screens). He said then that his graphics card finally just fried (which was attached to his montherboard) so the repair cost would have put him at about $600. I quickly backed everything up on my hard drive and then reinstalled Tiger this past weekend. Haven't had a single episode. I'm just really bummed out now because I can't run iLife 09. Someone has GOT to have a solution for this by now. From what I'm now hearing this is a pretty widespread issue.

  • Having Display Issues in Explorer

I have a page that renders just fine in Explorer when I have the page w/ the file ext. .hmtl, but when I turn the page into a .cfm page then the whole page displays incorrectly.
    Here are the 2 examples:
    HTML Page: http://carolinasparking.org/template_aug_2011/test.html
    CFM Page: http://carolinasparking.org/template_aug_2011/test.cfm
The code is exactly the same on both pages.  The site looks fine in Firefox and Chrome with the .cfm ext.
Any clues anyone has would be very helpful.
    Anthony

When the previous post was looking at the example I was most likely playing around w/ the pages.  The 2 examples are now the same and will stay that way.  I still can not get it to render correctly using a .cfm  but renders correctly using .html.
I have been looking for a day now trying to find the answer, can any one come up with an answer.  This only in occurs in explorer.

  • Early 2011 MBP w/ Thunderbolt Display issues

Since updating to Mountain Lion, the following works:
    1. It connects and works as a display
    2. It connects my external USB drive
    What it no longer does:
    1. Audio no longer automatically switches to display Audio, I have to open preferences and manually do it. Even then it often seems to ignore that preference.
    2. When I close the MBP, it no longer automatically switches over to use the TB as the main/only display
    3. Connecting an iPhone does not work through the TB but works directly through the MBP to sync, etc

The USB ports on my Mid 2009 15-inch MBP suffers from this also. If there is damage to the solder on the port, it is because the port is not made to spec. Any USB cable I plug in is able to wobble because the opening in the unibody and the canal in the port are too large. That wobbling does damage.
It's like when a wooden chair gets wobbly. If you tighten the screws or reglue the joints the chair will be fine. But, if you let it continue to wobble it will eventually break.

  • Display issues in FCP X on my MBP

    Hi there,
I downloaded FCP X from the App Store this week and installed it and I am having a lot of display issues. My MCP is the 13.3" model from mid 2010 and the graphics card is compatible. I have 8 GB installed, so that should be sufficient as well. The areas where I am having display issues are:
    * I don't see the film strip in the event browser. I do see the listing of the files in the event browser.
    * I can not see the Inspector browser. Clicking on the i icon does not do anything and does not bring up the inspector browser
    * I can not see any of the effects. Clicking on any of the effects buttons does not do anything and does not bring up the effects browser
I also notice that when resizing the FCP window, it does not get repainted properly.
One last thing that is annoying, but I found a work-around for this, is the splash window shows when FCP has loaded. It does not open FCP with the same layout as I last used, in fact it is only showing the menu bar and nothing else.
I hope that someone can help me with any of these problems. I was really excited about getting started with FCP X, but this has been a downer so far....
    Thanks.
    Edwin

    Hi,
i had the same problem when i used the 10.0 version....but i solved in three ways:
    Restarting the computer;
    or
Creating a new event, clic on new event and the old clips appeared like magic in the old event if you try to access it again....
    or
Click and keep pressed the Event icon (the purple star); try to put it in "Machintosh HD" or any hdd you have the event. Magically the clips are again in the browser....
    Try......
    Cheers

  • Display issues in XP with Firefox

I just installed Firefox browser to an old XP machine. I am having display issues: sideways lines and "double vision" even on the home page. I know I have an old video card. That has caused sideways lines in videos before. This is a computer my husband uses and loves! I know its a dinosaur. Besides videos in kids programs, I never have had any display problems just browsing the web. And I can watch YouTube videos just fine in my other browsers.

You can try to disable hardware acceleration in Firefox.
*Tools > Options > Advanced > General > Browsing: "Use hardware acceleration when available"
You need to close and restart Firefox after toggling this setting.
If there are problems with Flash then you can check for problems with current Shockwave Flash plugin versions and try this:
*disable protected mode in the Flash plugin (Flash 11.3+ on Windows Vista and later)
*disable hardware acceleration in the Flash plugin

  • Display Issue after 10.9.2 update

After updating my Macbook Pro with Retina to 10.9.2 -- My display flickers for a second after sleep and or blank screen and then goes back to normal. Has anyone else been having display issues after updating?

Yes similar problem here: I have a MacBook Pro, 15 inch Retina, Mid 2012, and when I connect a secondary display via HDMI (and also HDMI-to-Thunderbolt) then the external monitor becomes the main display.
I have not figured out on  how to switch back to former settings. My guess: it's a bug. A quick search confirms that many others have secondary display issues since 10.9.2
(Steve would have fired those lazy punks, who failed to do sincere testing before release …)

  • CSS - Display issues browsers

    These two sites:
    www.k9countrycottage.com and www.mcgahanranch.com are having
display issues in browers. k9countrycottage in the left hand column
the navigation is pushed down. It only has issues in all versions
    of Explorer.
In mcgahanranch, there is space inserted above the sidebar
and the maincontent and it occurs across all browsers. I've used
the CSS out of the box for the two column fixed column width for
    both sites.
    Any help greatly appreciated.

  • Mac Pro Display Issue

Mac Pro Display Issue - Unexpectedly Sleeps and Freezes
Just since a couple of days my Mac Pro desktop has been having display issues. Unexpectedly the screens go into sleep mode, it turns black and freezes, the computer doesnot respond to the keyboard or mouse.
At first I thought this was related to Chrome, and switched to Firefox, but the computer is still having the same issue. I have to shut down and restart each time it gets stuck.
I even went into preferences and changed the energy saver settings to "Never" allow display or harddrive to sleep. But this problem is stil happening.
Does anyone have the same problems? Or a solution?

I cleaned out my mac with compressed air, it was dusty, but the display flickering happened again.
So I followed your advice and installed:
    Temperature Monitor
    http://www.bresink.de/osx/TemperatureMonitor.html
Which showed that my memory module 1B and 2B were 70 - 75'C(160 -167'F). There was no reading for the graphic card so I couldn't tell if that was over heating.
    Then I installed:
    smc fan controller
    http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/23049/smcfancontrol
and increased the memory_cpu fan speed which lowered the temperature of the ram to 60'C (143'F).
I even changed this ram's placement and put it in different slots. This ram was the same temperature in the new placements.
Also this is the kingston 2gb ram without heatsinks. Ive used it for 1.5 yrs, and this is the first time its giving me these problems.
Do you know how I can check if the graphic card is over heating? or is the problem just with the ram?
Thank you for all your help!

  • Nokia E 71 - Display Issues

I just bought my Nokia E 71 yesterday and seem to be having display issues. The screen has a vertical line running on the right part of the screen which can only be seen when the phone is on. Has anybody experienced this as well? Any suggestions on what I can do to fix this?

    Sounds like a faulty display.
Take it back where you bought it and show them.

G5 dual 2ghz.  Been unplugged for a while. Powers up but no video or power to usb keyboard.  Boots up fine in safe mode, restart into normal mode ok. After shutdown, back to same issue.  What's happening?

I keep seeing people ask and the advice to replace if it has been unplugged, but really have nothing to confirm that from my experiences.
My experience is that a weak or dead battery can cause much more than date and time issues.
I have seen it time and time again.
Deal with used machines and you will quickly learn....
I'll give no "recipe" or set list of symptoms, but the range of irregularities that can occur make it a quick and easy first line of troubleshooting, especially when the machine has been off the mains for a few months.
Why fight mysterious maladies and troubleshoot with the knowledge that the PRAM battery is beyond it's useful life.
    Maybe they recharge?
Not likely. They are chemically nasty, disposable, one way discharge batteries.
    They aren't Lithium-ion batteries

  • Macbook Pro Early 2011 Display issue

    Hi all,
After reading the replacement program that has been extended to MBP for 15" and 17", is there going to be any news with regards to the 13"?
The reason why I'm asking is that while I'm not sure if mine is an isolated issue or widespread/common occurrence, I have had my logic board replaced last year due to a display issue, and currently still unable to run external display, despite reading up on discussion that is going on.
The symptoms mirror that of the 15"/17", just that the 13" does not have a dedicated GPU.
Hope to get more suggestions/ solutions/ news to potential replacement program from here.
    Thanks all!
    Regards,
    Ziang

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
Early 2011 15 and 17-inch MacBooks Pro have had several GPU issues that causes graphic corruption, and it was an issue that showed in most MacBooks Pro. However, this does not apply to the 13-inch MacBook Pro, so I think it is just an issue that has appeared on your Mac but there is not a reason for a replacement program.
