Early Termination for Upgrading to Smart Phones

I am really frustrated with Verizon right now. I have plan with several smart phones and 2 basic phones. I wanted to upgrade these 2 phones to Smart Phones. I couldn't imagine that this would be an issue. Verizon only earns more money by having me purchase smart phones instead of basic phones. I was told that I can't upgrade until September when the contract on these basic phones is up unless I want to pay a $175 early termination fee per phone. I understand that in general, you need people to stay with the contract for the 2 years in order to cover the price of the phone they were given.  In this case, these are cheap phones. I'm sure they have been paid for many times over in the past year. If I upgrade, verizon will be getting $40 a month per phone instead of $20 a month per phone. I might even upgrade the Data plan. Instead I am completely trapped until September. $175 Termination fee would be way more than these basic phones are worth. I am tempted to go to another carrier and start a new contract and let these run out - it will actually cost me less to pay the bill for these phones and not use them than to pay for an early termination fee. Or maybe I'll try one of the comanies that offers to pay your termination fee. Verizon - you are not making sense! P.S. If you want my basic phones back, you can have 'em.

Unfortunately Joe, VZW can't bend the rules just to satisfy you or anyone else.  I know you may think that it would be only smart for them to let you out to get another phone plan that will yield them more revenue.  However, they're not seeing it that way in your case.  Rule are rules regardless of if we like them or not.  I upgraded my iP5 to an iP6+ in September.  I was less than 2 months on the end of of current 2 year agreement...but because I used Early EDGE I had to give away my phone, which I was 2 months from owning outright, back to VZW for absolutely no compensation just to enjoy the offer of Early EDGE.  Fair...maybe not to most.  Some people would think that VZW should have just let them out since they were so close to the end...but I didn't see it that way.  I understood my agreement when I signed up and therefore I knew I had to uphold my end of the bargain.  My point is, VZW makes exceptions for a lot of things...but I've never really heard anyone on here say that they've bumped up an upgrade just because they were asked by the consumer.  Best of luck to you with your next carrier...but be advise that I don't think many other carriers are going to bump your upgrade date just because you ask...they'll inform you that if you plan to upgrade earlier than 2 years then you'd probably want to try their version of EDGE...(i.e. Next, JUMP, or Easy Pay)

  • Upgraded to 10 GB for our 3 smart phones.  2 basic phones now $20 higher?

We have 3 smart phones and 2 basic phones on our plan.  When we upgraded to 10 GB for the smart phones, the  basic rates went up $20 per phone.  Why?  Basic phones do not use data.

Looks like you'd get the $10 off of the basic phone whether on Edge or not.  You say basic went up by $20 each?  So you were paying $10 per basic line?  Whenever you make a plan change that affects all lines like a package deal, you may give up aspects of your old plan.  Basic phones do use data, or at least the CAN.  Even a single basic phone by itself on More Everything is $20 for the line and $20 for 500 MB of data or $5 for 700 min and pay as you go data.

  • Upgrade to smart phone

I am looking to upgrade to a smart phone have been to the Verizon store as well as a Costco store. The prices at Costo as well as add ons are far better.
Is there any downside to dealing with Costco versus a Verizon owned store( warranties etc)?

For the last 2 years or 3 years my family & I have done our upgrades through Costco. It was been excellent and no problems. You have the 30 day policy still which means you have 30 days to test out the phone. If you don't like it or something is wrong with it you can exchange it for another new phone.  Warranty is still the same (1 year of warranty).

  • Signing up for Skype on smart phone and on desktop

I signed up for a Skype account today on my android smart phone (HTC Rezound).  I entered a user name and password.  Tomorrow I want to set Skype up on my desk top computer after I get cable Internet and a Logitech webcam installed.  Do I have to set up another Skype account with a different user name and password for my desktop or can I use the same account set up today on my mobile phone?  Thanks!

You can use the same account.
If you install Skype on your computer for the first time then you might be presented with registration form, but just cancel it and sign in with your current account

  • Upgrade to smart phone with discount.

    Hello, first time poster here!
I have a Samsung myshot A, and I have an upgrade available that allows me to have discounted prices. (I am not sure how to know if it is an annual or contract related upgrade)
Anyways, I'm looking at a couple Droids and the iPhone.  Do I have a discount there at all? Can I see what my discount is getting me?
Also, I have $40 to put into a phone for a monthly payment.  The droid and iPhone require data packs. I would also want unlimited texts.  What is the cheapest texting service that provides unlimited texting to Verizon? Is it the same for both iPhone and other smartphones?
Lastly, I've been searching the forums and see that there is an option to purchase a smartphone, then replace the data plan, with a data block? (cheaper supposedly).  Is there truth to that? Is there something illegitimate about it?
    Thanks!

I have a Samsung myshot A, and I have an upgrade available that allows me to have discounted prices. (I am not sure how to know if it is an annual or contract related upgrade)  Anytime you upgrade at a discounted price, you sign a new contract; in other words, all discounts are contract related...
Anyways, I'm looking at a couple Droids and the iPhone.  Do I have a discount there at all? Can I see what my discount is getting me? If you log on to your account, and click on "upgrade", you will be shown prices for 2 yr, 1 yr, and no contract.  Based on the length of the contract you sign, the discounts vary.  For the iPhone you will pay $199 (16GB) or $299 (32 GB) on a 2 yr contract.  You can go to the phone listings and check the various Droids for their upgrade prices.
Also, I have $40 to put into a phone for a monthly payment. That will cover the data plan for a Droid or the iPhone, plus your shared line if you are on a family plan.  If you are looking for an individual plan, $40 isn't going to get you more than a simple basic phone with 450 minutes of call time, and no texting.  The droid and iPhone require data packs. I would also want unlimited texts.  What is the cheapest texting service that provides unlimited texting to Verizon? Is it the same for both iPhone and other smartphones? Texting bundles give you limited texts to other carriers, with bundles of $10 or more giving you unlimited Verizon to Verizon texts.  Add $30 to your voice plan for unlimited texts to all carriers.  The same texting plan can be added to any phone.
Lastly, I've been searching the forums and see that there is an option to purchase a smartphone, then replace the data plan, with a data block? (cheaper supposedly).  Is there truth to that? No - a smartphone requires the unlimited data plan.  There were a few select phones that you could do that with, but it was a limited data plan for $9.99 (25 MB) and it only applied to specific phones.  Is there something illegitimate about it?  Not illegitimate, just not an option for most.
    Thanks!
To sum up, a Doid or iPhone is going to cost you up to $200 or more, discounted (the full retails prices are $500 or more) and your monthly plan, with unlimited texting, is going to run you $100 or so, if you are on an individual plan.  On a family plan, you can be an add-a-line for $9.99, add a texting bundle for $10 or $20, (unless the family plan is Talk & Text and already has the unlimited texting on all phones), and add your data plan for $29.99.  That;s the only way I see you getting this for $40.
    Hope this has been helpful....

  • Is there a auto focus camera update for 8530 curve smart phone?

    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

The hardware on the 8520 does not support autofocus.  It's the same as asking if there will be an update to put a flash on the camera.  There just isn't a flash and there isn't an autofocus camera.  The 9630 and the 9650 have autofocus.

You can check to see if you are qualified for an upgrade. Just log into the account holders name through MyVerizon. Under account actions click "upgrade". Look at your line and you will see how far away you are from an upgrade.
You would not have to pay an early termination fee to get a new smart phone. Early termination fee only applies if you are canceling your whole contract/line. You aren't.  If you are not qualified for an upgrade, you will have to pay full retail price for a new smart phone if you buy directly from Verizon.

  • Palm should focus on Non-camera Smart Phone

There is definately a market for non-camera smart phone. If Palm can't compete with those phone packed with apps and multimedia stuff, why not create a brand new market?
There are certain occupation that do not allow camera phones. And it's hard to find a decent smart phone that doesn't come with a camera. I believe Palm can create and should focus on this market sector.

  • Added 3rd line, my own feature phone, to NATIONWIDE LOYALTY SHARE 550 plan. Penalty for early termination of that line?

I went to a Verizon store to activate, on a pay-as-you-go basis, an old feature phone I owned so I could use it for a month or two while I am selling a house. The Verizon agent said the best thing would be to add it as a 3rd line on my existing NATIONWIDE LOYALTY SHARE 550 plan, where it would only cost the $9+ monthly fee and use minutes from the pooled 550 plan minutes. I made sure he understood that I may only need the additional phone/line for a month or two, then cancel it when the house is sold. He said I could easily delete the line and phone at no penalty. HOWEVER, when I got home and looked at my online receipt for the new line, it states "Date of Activation: 9/06/2013, Contract End Date: 09/06/2015, Early Termination Fee: UP TO $175." I am looking for a written reply from a Verizon representative why the receipt states an early termination fee when I was told that there would be none because I am using my own phone?

I was able to contact my Verizon agent at the local store and he said the 3rd phone was incorrectly added as being subject to a 2-year contract. He went into my account and changed that 3rd phone to a one day-contract so it now shows as a month-to-month phone with no termination fee. Unfortunately, he said he cannot re-print a corrected receipt with the change. I asked him to make a screenshot of my account showing the 3rd line and had him email it to me. Hopefully, that will suffice when I terminate the line in a month or two.
This is a good reason to always check the written agreements and receipts when you buy anything. Never just take what is taken verbally as binding. It is what actually gets entered into the system and what the contract terms state in writing.

  • Trade early termination fee on tablet for addition phone on the account?

When I got my single line phone I got the free tablet deal with a cell plan for the tablet.  I have absolutely no use for the tablet cell plan.  If i add a second phone to the plan can I terminate the tablet plan without having to pay the early termination fee for that tablet plan?

You can try activating a old phone on the tablet line.  That would change your bills according.  That could in turn make everything cost more tho.  What plan are you on?

  • How much is early termination fee for basic phone, my contract is done 1/18/15?

How much is early termination fee for basic phone, my contract is done 1/18/15?

There is a $10 discount available for basic phones to knock that cost down. You can visit your local store, add the discount online, or call customer care @ 800-922-0204. Hope this helps.

  • I am eligible for an upgrade on my basic phone that I own. Since there are only a small amount of basic phones, is it possible to own a smart phone but without a data plan?

There are only two basic phone with full keyboard that is available online, but was hoping that it would be possible for me to own a smart phone without needing a data plan.

You can own and use a smartphone on wifi only, without a data plan, but you will not have the capability to use it as a phone on Verizon's network. To activate a smartphone  and have calling (phone) capability, yes, you do need to have a data plan for the smartphone line.  You CAN have a minimal data plan, and use it on wifi primarily - but yoju DO need a data plan.

  • Trying to figure out early termination fees for one of my phones.

Hey , Im looking at changing wireless providers in September of this year ( 2012 ) and although I have three phones comming up in Aug. ( the month before ) My wifes phone comes up on June 1 2013 and I am woundering how much it would cost me to terminate hers with the others in September 2012? It might be worth it to us to do it then since I would lose my unlimited data by updating my phone in September of this year and my wife really wants to go back to a smart phone ( misses her old one ) and I was looking to start another one up for a tablet my children wants to buy me for my birthday. Im looking into Sprint because of their Unlimited plans, I need them instead of some stupid " family plan " I would never use ( my kids will never get data plans on my dime ) and I really have a hard time with a company that no longer cares about customer service or care.
Anyways if I could get a dollar amount I would be greatfull. Thanks for any help you can provide.

Here is a link to the return policy which also lists the ETF information.

  • Early termination fee for Samsung Reality?

We have a family plan and want to switch to sprint. I need to know the early termination fees. 1 phone is a samsung reality. The second phone use to be a samsung reality but was recently broke and switched to a motorola Razor (not sure if we would pay the smartphone termination fee or regular phone termination fee). both have served 16 months of their 24 month term. any info would help greatly. Thanks!

Thank you budone for your response. I appreciate your help.
    @Smartsie,
I'm sorry to hear you are considering going to Sprint. If you are still under contract the amount would depend on how much of the contract you have completed and the device you originally upgraded to when you renewed your contract. Without taking a look at your account I am unable to provide the exact early termination fee amount.
Please send me a private message if you would like to discuss your account. I'll be more than happy to assist you.

  • Upgrade from basic to smart phone before contract finishes.  What are my options?

    Hi everyone,
I'm working on upgrading from a basic phone to a smartphone.  My current phone is one line in a shared plan (1 iphone and 3 basic phones).
My current contract isn't up until September 2014, but it's become necessary that I get a smartphone this winter.  Obviously, that's not going to happen without some fees, but I'm trying to figure out what my options are.  This is what I think I have, but are there ones I'm not considering?
    1. Buy a phone through verizon without the subsidy.  I assume this resets my 2 year contract.  But there's no early termination fee, right?
    2. Buy a verizon-ready used phone from a friend and apply it to my account.  I believe that this doesn't incur an ETF either, right?
    3. Add a new line with a smartphone (with subsidy).  Transfer my number to that phone, and then pay to terminate the basic phone line (which would be $175-5/month, so $105, right?).
    4. Pay to terminate this line ($105), and move to another carrier, but my number wouldn't transfer.
Any recommendations within these options, or things I haven't mentioned?
    Thanks!

    1. If you buy a phone without subsidy, there is no contract. And no ETF -- you'd simply put the new phone on the line and the contract end date is the same.
    2. Correct. You can activate a phone you bought elsewhere anytime. It won't change your contract. You will simply have to add the data plan.
    3. The contract is tied to the phone number. So if you add a line for a smartphone, that number/line would incur the $350 smartphone ETF. But you can transfer the new smartphone to your current line, then put your basic phone on that line -- it will either cost you $10/month if you're on a Nationwide plan or $30/month if on Share Everything.
    4. You can port your number to the new carrier and pay the ETF, which seems it'll be about $105. Every carrier has to allow porting nowadays. Just know if you're not happy with the new carrier and want to switch back to Verizon within the first few months (either 60 or 90 days, I can't recall), you'll be put right back on the contract you were on.
I can't think of any other options. When I feel like switching and I'm under contract, I typically choose No. 2 in your above scenario.
