Earned value in PS

Hi Experts,
In report S_ALR_87015124, I want to see how the Earned Value break i.e. on what basis the earned value is calculated.
Can u please let me know what is earned value and how it is calculated.
Thanks in advance.
Regards,
Bhadri M.

Hi All,
Thanks for your inputs.
I got some info about EV.
Please clarify few doubts.
1. Suppose for a project the EV is run on 5th of every month.
Project:1
EV Run date:EV Value
05/04: 100
05/05: 200
05/06: 300
Is there any table which stores these EV Values along with the EV run date.
2. Is there any possibility whether the EV run date and billing due date will be on the same date ?
Thanks in advance.
Regards,
Bhadri M.

• Setting Up Earned Value Reporting in Project Server 2010, Using Hours Not Dollars

Hello All,
Are there instructions for setting up Project Server 2010 for Earned Value data capture and reporting? I'm not certain that we are capturing the correct data to report EVM (i.e., Physical % Complete), and I was unable to find any videos on YouTube.
Also, I noticed that Project Server 2010 defaults to reporting EV in Dollars. Can we set it up to report in Hours instead?
Julie

Hi Julie,
If you allow to jump in to complement Dale's excellent reply and comment some of your concern...
5. The status date is a fundamental parameter while talking about the EVM (it is ANYWAY a key setting for tracking projects with MS Project). The EV field will take into account actuals up to this date. Meaning that if your project plans have been updated
by the PM on tuesday and you are running the analysis on friday, you set the status date to tuesday and the uncomplete work between tuesday and friday will not be considered as late work since you are running the analysis as of tuesday. The status date can
be set from the "project" tab either in the project information dialog box or directly in the project tab, status group.
6. MS Project proposes 3 EVM tables by default. A table is a predefined set of column which composes a view, together with a Gantt chart or a timephased grid. If you go to the view tab, click on "tables" then "more tables",
you will find EV, EV cost indicators and EV Schedule indicators tables which will display the out of the box EVM fields calculated by MS Project based on the costs, actuals, Baseline, status date.
Then about the cumulative data, you might be refering to S-curves which are a representation allowing you showing the cumulative values of the EV. To do that, you'll have severals ways:
Use the cumulative calculated field in the visuals reports
Create
Dashboards from the report tab using the cumulative data (actual, Baseline, cost)
Create
MDX mesures in the OLAP cubes for cumulative data and create excel reports
Develop custom SSRS reports
Buy a 3rd-party addon
Finally please let me give you an excellent reference for the EVM in MS Project with EPM Central blog articles:

• In mode SEM - How to report de Earned Value?

Hi all,
I´m using Project Server 2013 in SEM mode.
Before without Project Server, the PM changed the "actual
physical percentage" to reporting
earned value. Now, I'm surprised with this post Physical
Complete.
If the physical percent complete
is disabled in the SEM mode, how reporte
the % progress on earned value?
Thanks a lot.
Roy Enriquez

Hi Dale,
My turn to ask a question, hoping to take advantage of your precious knowledge.
One of my colleague just faced this issue and tell me that it was possible with PS2010. Meaning that evenif the "Only Allow Tasks Updates Via Tasks and Timesheets" options was selected, PM were allowed updating the physical % complete in Project Pro. Can
you confirm this behavior? In case it is right, it appears that MS changed it in PS2013 (tested with both PS2013 SP1 on premise and Project Online).
In your point of view, does this behavior make sense? It prevents PM to do EV analysis based on the physical % complete. Moreover the physical % complete does not impact actual work, that why I'm questioning the relevance of this behavior.
Thanks in advance for your help.
Hope this helps,

• Primavera P6 - Earned Value/Financial Periods

I am using a weekly financial period to record earned value and actuals (units) in P6 v7.0 and then reporting on a monthly (made up of whole weeks) period the earned value and actual cost, but am experioencing some odd numbers within my reports.
For example, on the completion of a task, my reports are generating the following:
Week 1 Period Earned Value Cost = $2,050
Week 2 Period Earned Value Cost = ($2,050)
This doesn't relate to any change in the % complete that would result in a negative earned value - particularly one that is of the same magnitude as the previous week.
I'm also finding that the financial period data is not consistent over time. For example, if I generate a report for two months, the data within the weekly periods is not consistent with that generated in previous months:
Previous report:
Prior Period Earned Value Cost = $26,000
Month 1 Period Earned Value Cost = $62,000
New report:
Prior Period Earned Value Cost = $26,000
Month 1 Period Earned Value Cost = $52,000 (which should be $62,000)
Month 2 Period Earned Value Cost = $25,000 (which shoud lbe $15,000)
So far, I've been unable to identify the cause of this, but it appears that we're getting some sort of carry over effect between financial periods.
Does anyone have any ideas what is causing this and how to fix it? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi,
Thank you very much for your quick reply..
Unfortunately there is no data in the suggested tables (ACTIVITYSPREAD, PROJECTSPREAD) though the values have been posted already (Budgeted values and Earned values) against the projects.
I request you please suggest, are there any other tables available to search the above data ..? if there please suggest.
Regards,
Srikanth.

• 0PS_WBS_EVA (earned value) returns zero records

Hello,
I've activated the business content datasources for Project systems. I'm unable to get any records for earned values from R/3. The following datasources show zero records:
0PS_WBS_EVA
0PS_NWA_EVA
0PS_ORD_EVA
0PS_NAE_EVA
Can anyone tell me the tables to where these datasources are hitting? Help.SAP wasn't much of a help. I have already looked there.
Are there any settings within ECC that need to be changed in order to get data for the above datasources?
I'm getting data for the CO datasources related to project systems, such as 0CO_OM_WBS_6, 0CO_OM_OPA_6 and so on.
Due to zero records from the above datasources, there is no data coming in the Earned Values cube of Project systems.
Regards,
Sameer

Dear Oscar,
Thanks for your response,
The Actual Cost posted by our Functional Consultant is USD 250, but i am getting the Total Actual cost is ZERO (Sum of -250 +250) as i shown above.
the posted actual cost is +250, finally we need this figure only,
if i do restriction on Sender receiver Indicater field with S than i will get Actual Cost 250, but in SAP standard RKF for Actual Cost there is no restriction on Sender receiver Indicater field (S & H)
I hope you got my point now.

• CProject & Earned Value progress

Hi,
I've seen the earned value report in Evaluation of cProject, but all values such as BCWS, BCSP, ... are zero.
can anybody share with me documents of calculating earned value in cProject?
Thank you verymuch
[email protected]
Long Nguyen

Hi Long,
To be honest, I have never tested the functionality with POC value myself.
But the evaluation of cProjects object link is to pull the values from the ERP backend system and display it. The core logic, how to determine such values, is still 'only ' available in the ERP backend system. A similar case is to evaluate the plan, actual costs & budget from the R/3 linked objects. All the information are pulled from the ERP system.
P.S: Which evaluation do you use?
Kind regards,

• Earned Value with Project Web App 2013?

Hi folks,
Earned Value in Project Client is quite fine, the choice of calculate against actual or status date is a nice feature. But using Project Web App I lack the option of setting the status date - is EVA in Project Web App 2013 really restricted to the actual
date? Or is the status date set automatically by approved task updates?
Thanks
Olaf

Hi Olaf,
Unfortunately the status date cannot be set from PWA, and there is no automatic update behind. The intent is that the PM updates the status date and the tasks in MS Project Pro and the team members and executives can consult EVA from PWA.
Hope this helps,

• Earned Value analysis on WBS

Experts,
Need your advice once again. Can we do Earned Value analysis on WBS level i.e without the use of network/activities etc. If yes, how?
Please explain step by step.
Thanks,
Arya

Dear Arya
You can do the following customizing steps... this will help you to configure as per your needs. This is not as per your need, as only you can understand what all the customizations you need to do........
1. Create Progress Version 101 with exclusive use 'Progress Analysis'. I have selected Plan & Actual check boxes.
2. Settings for Progress Version-
a) Plan version - '0'
b) EV basis - Cost plan (active project, annual values)
c) POC weighting - Cost plan (active project, annual values)
d) Planning type - Basic dates
e) Early / Late - earliest possible
f) Both reference boxes selected
3. SKFs (statistical key fig.)- I created three SKFs 10 (Non-Aggregated POC), 20 (Aggregated POC) and 30 (POC for RA) with unit of measure '%' and selected the Key value category 'Total values'.
4. I need to assign these SKFs to different value categories. I created three value category 10, 20 & 30 with selection 'SKF with total values' and unit of measure '%'. Then I assigned SKF 10 to VC 10, SKF 20 to VC 20, SKF 30 to VC 30
5. I assigned measurement method as default value:
a) WBS (Plan) - Cost Proportional
b) WBS (Actual) - Cost Proportional
c) Internal Activity (Plan) - Cost Proportional
d) Internal Activity (Actual) - Degree of Processing
c) Exernal activity(Plan) - Cost Proportional
d) Exernal Activity (Actual) - Degree of Processing
6. I made progress cost element '6511100' (Secondary cost element) with Cost element category as 61.
7. I maintain a value catagory 6511100 with Cost radio button selected.
And assigned the progress cost element to the value catagory. i.e Cost element 6511100 to value catagory 6511100.
8. I maintain the assignment of cost element group. ie. I assigned progress cost elemnt to cost element group with default radio button selected. In the cost element group, I have selected certain cost elements which we regularly used (cost elements for project materials, project manhours, project contracts, spares etc)
Run CJEN first then CNE1 and CNE5.

• Can we evaluate EVM(Earned value analysis with) in SEM-BSC

Can we evaluate EVM(Earned value analysis with)IN BSC SEM-BSC.If so then how?

The Earned Value Management (EVM) method enables efficient and effective project management. This form of financial analysis focuses on technical, schedule and cost performance of a project. Obviously, there are different ways of managing by EV ranging from using simple spreadsheets to more complex software implementations.
To get the basic components of project performance regarding the diverse costs, schedule and technical aspects, some of SAP's project management solutions as e.g. part of SAP PLM can possibly be used (for more information please visit e.g. the respective Solutions area on SDN). As these systems are rather transactional, an extraction of the performance data to SAP NetWeaver Business Intelligence (BI) would be a reasonable second step, together with uploads or manual entry of additional necessary project data which is perhaps not available in the transactional system.
For more information of the calculations behing this concept you may refer e.g. to Wikipedia:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Earned_value_management
Using calculated key figures in BI can finally deliver the metrics to be composed as Key Performance Indicators and displayed in a dedicated strategy/performance management software with its respective status at the strategic objective or intitiative level if needed (in this regard I would recommend you to have a look at a new strategy/performance management solution of SAP called SAP Strategy Management (SSM) which replaced the older Balanced Scorecard app of SEM you are referring to. More info on SSM can be found on e.g. http://www.sap.com/solutions/performancemanagement/index.epx. SAP Strategy Management is methodology-agnostic and can be used for all performance management methodologies based on objectives, KPI's and initiatives. SSM is based on technology acquired by SAP with a company called Pilot earlier this year).
To conclude, a strategy management application (if it is SSM or SEM BSC) does not directly help you calculate EVM as you need transactional/manual calculation data for it together with calculation formulas etc. where diverse other SAP products incl. primarily SAP NW BI can be used. However, a strategy management application can be an excellent environment to visualize/evaluate the results of the EVM calcualtion in the context of strategic objectives and/or initiatives. And as I said, feel free to have a look at the new SAP Strategy Management application, replacing the SEM BSC Solution if you are interested in the strategy management area.
Thank you for your inquiry / Best regards,
Karol

• BCWP - Earned Value

Is the BCWP value changes every month once i track the project. Like if i have tracked the project on 31.05.2014 then the value of BCWP which was as on 30.04.2014 will be changed???
Because it happened so. when i tracked the project as on 31.05.2014 & checked back the value of April's BCWP the value is no same.
Please explain me whether its Yes or No...

Kalyani,
Yes, the BCWP value will change, based upon the status date and the % completed, put in. So if you entered progress in your schedule, it will change.
Here is the full definition of this field as applies to MS Project:
