Earphone and Audio Quality Question.

I have the 2nd generation iPod nano. Most of the my audio files are 128kbps. I am currently using the default earbuds.
I am thinking about buying these Shure SE110 (http://www.6ave.com/shop/SearchResults.aspx?kwd=SHURE)earphones. However, given the quality of my audio files, will the higher-end earphones even matter? Will there be any difference in sound quality/experience?

The answer is simple... with Logic you have to know what you're doing as opposed to Garageband which does some of the work for you. Logic is a program (generally) designed for professionals, it assumes you know a little bit about EQ, Compressors, Limiters...etc. If you don't, you need to learn if you wish to use Logic effectively. It also means you will need to study the ART of mixing, there's audio pros who say mixing can only be learned by doing it over and over and over....etc and listening to your mixes on as many different playback systems as possible.
Which version of Logic are you using? (important)
And what do you mean your CPU won't let you see the manual, the manual is online, if you have Safari you can see the manual.
Set Logic's master fader so your song never drives it over 0.0, but remember, louder is not necessarily better, first get a good mix/blend then worry about getting it louder.
Something else to consider, commercial recordings are mostly done using processing hardware that costs thousands of dollars. To compete with that you really have to know what you're doing.

Audio quality questions

New to iTunes here. I think I'm settling in on using AAC at 256 kbs, VBR On as my default import mode for CDs onto my PowerBook HD as a decent compromise between quality/size. But I don't know what the difference is regarding the sample rate options of 44.1 vs 48 kHz. Right now I've got it set to auto, but am wondering what is the difference? And, any opinions regarding VBR On or Off on iTunes 7.5?
Also, how good in general is the output from a PowerBook (or various iPods) if playing an original CD or Apple Lossless file through a good stereo, vs. playing the same CD on a dedicated CD player on the same good stereo? Hope that made sense. What I am trying to get at is, I haven't been able to find any discussion on the relative quality of the D/A conversion or preamp capabilities of the portable players compared to "real" stereo equipment. Reason for asking is I had thought about ripping my CDs as Lossless, but figured I might not be getting all that the files could deliver if played back through average-level portables. Sounds okay. Use Apple Lossless if you can spare the storage space or have a dedicated drive for your music. Then you won't have to rip your CDs again later if you find your needs change.

As Matthew Morgan rightfully pointed out, CD-DA uses 44.1 kHz, so don't upsample.
And, any opinions regarding VBR On or Off on iTunes 7.5?
It really doesn't make too much difference SQ-wise. Most likely, you'll just end up with bigger files on average with VBR enabled.

That's the toughest of your questions. Macs support bit-perfect pass-through out of the box when using digital out, so this is great for using your computer as a transport to an outboard DAC. Even the line out (in analog mode) of most recent Macs is pretty good in comparison with most "stock" computer hardware, as Apple tends to use very good DACs in their computers. My latest and greatest setup is as follows:
Hard drive containing Apple Lossless music > AirPort Express > harman/kardon HD 970 CD player (with digital input and extremely high quality DAC) > HeadAmp Gilmore Lite + Dedicated Power Supply > lots of different headphones.
There are many options you have as far as FireWire or USB DACs to use as a good and clean source for your music listening, and most of them have decent built-in headphone amplifier sections as well as support for balanced/unbalanced analog outputs for connecting to powered speakers or other hi-fi equipment, digital (coaxial or Toslink) output(s), and so forth.
iPods sound very good when using a line-out dock (there are many of them on the market) rather than the headphone jack. I use mine with an ALO Audio Cryo Micro Dock, a Ray Samuels Audio Hornet "M" headphone amplifier, and Etymotic ER-4S IEMs. I've been very happy with this portable setup for the past year, and really have no desire to improve upon it.

How to improve the screen and audio quality on my Satellite c655-s5132

I recently bought a used Satellite C655-S5132 laptop. Although this machine is designed to run on Windows 7, it came equipped with Windows XP. The machine runs OK except for the screen which shows a distorted image and the sound which is tinny and low volume.
I suspect this is due to a software shortcoming rather than a defect in any of the hardware. The image distortion may be due to the fact that this laptop comes with a wide screen with an aspect ratio of 6:9, whereas the Windows XP operating system that is currently installed on this laptop is set at an aspect ratio of 4:3 and doesn't allow me to switch to the other aspect ratio.
As a result, the image fills the entire screen but appears to be stretched horizontally. As for the audio, I checked the volume settings and they are all set at their upper limit.
I have done the following:
1. I did a system check which shows that there are 2 drivers that need to be updated: video controller and video controller (VGA compatible). But when I prompt the machine to install updated drivers it gives me a failure code 28 "device not installed properly".
2. I ran 2 driver software programs: one shows that for both video controllers "the manufacturer is unknown" and "drivers are not installed", and the second shows that the driver is installed but needs to be updated.
3. Searched the web for the right drivers and found that for this machine running on Windows XP (32 bit), Intel produces a graphic driver, GMA 4500.
4. I tried to download this driver from the Intel website but the installation process failed. Perhaps it failed because Toshiba has specified a custom version of this graphic driver that can only be downloaded from its own website.
5. I searched the Toshiba website but was unable to identify the drivers for sound and image for this machine.
Could anyone help me find the right drivers on the Toshiba website that would allow me to: (i) change the setting for the aspect ratio and in doing so get rid of the image distortion, as well as improve the overal picture quality, and (ii) increase the audio volume and improve the overall sound quality?

My advice is to restore the hard disk to its original out-of-the-box contents using Toshiba recovery media. All the drivers and utilities are properly preinstalled. Windows is preactivated.

ADR and Audio Input Questions

So I'm attempting to use Soundtrack Pro to do ADR (dialogue replacement) on a video project, and I could use some advice.
I have a Sony V1U with a Rode NTG-1 XLR condenser microphone. Is there a way to get Soundtrack Pro to recognize the incoming audio from my camera?
If not, I've also been looking at XLR to USB converters, and there are two (neither of which I can get my hands on yet, arrrgh), one called Icicle from Blue Microphones, and another called MXL USB Mic Mate. Both have phantom power (my mic doesn't). I spoke to a salesguy at Guitar Center who was telling me (after admitting he'd never heard of them) that the sound quality would be terrible using an analog-to-USB converter like that, and I should buy an interface (like from M-Audio or similar).
Problem is, I don't want to buy extra sound gear. I just want to use what I've already got. Is there a way? (An XLR to mini-jack cable didn't work, as the Mac didn't recognize it.) It seems painful and unnecessary to record ADR tracks to the camera and then have to capture them and track lay into the timeline.
Surely someone else has done dialogue replacement?? Can you please help with some advice? Thank-you!

Well... in the end, I bought a MXL USB Mic Mate. And it works wonderfully. The guy at Guitar Center was a moron.
If you're using a decent XLR mic, and want to do voice-over, I recommend it. Soundtrack Pro recognizes the USB mic, and you're good to go.
There's still a delay during the ADR process, so it's FAR less than ideal, and I have yet to figure out how to use Soundtrack Pro in a more "professional" ADR way. If anybody has tips (or can point me somewhere online), that would be great. We've got a ton of ADR still to do.

FCP and Audio Filters Question.

I'm editing this project for a client. I did not shoot it. However, one of the cameras was plugged into the sound board for audio, and the cameraman checked the camera levels and his were fine before shooting. The sound guy didn't check his levels and one of the voices is peaking quite a bit.
I have very little knowledge in audio production/editing. I'm running FCP 5 -- is there any advice anyone could give me within the audio editors of FCP? I also have Soundtrack, but have no experience with it.
I messed with the three-band EQ and took out some low frequencies but received minimal results.

Digital audio, once over driven, is a loss. There is no graceful degradation as in analog audio.
Pop over to the soundtrack pro forum, perhaps one of the experienced folks there can offer some help.
FLV 9 files can be generated from Quicktime Pro as H.264 then simply changing the suffix.

Itunes severely lagging and audio quality bad

whenever i open my itunes it takes a while to use and it lags, closing itunes takes about 1 to 2 minutes. is there anything i can do to speed it up, i have the most recent version of itunes. also, the audio crackles a lot, even if i use headphones ( so its not my macbook pro's speakers)

This is not normal behavior for itunes. You should look into what it is with your setup that is causing this behavior. Corrupted disk/files, storing your music on an external drive or nas?

Scene and Audio Problem/Question

Hi-
I am working on an animation that is comprised of several
Scenes set up in flash. What I am wanting to do is add a mixed
musical piece that will play during the whole duration of the
animation. I thought I could that by just adding the audio file to
the first scene, but what happens is the first scene will play,
then it goes blank until the entire musical score is played and
scene two starts immediately after. Is it possible to get the music
to play across the whole range of scenes? If so how?

W520 Keyboard lettering and numbering Quality Question

When I comparing my recently acquired W520's keypad with my other Lenovo Thinkpad keypads (listed below), it seems all the lettering, numbers, etc on all keys look somewhat like decals that have lifted or are crinkling and appear somewhat blurred around the edges of the symbols when light reflects off them at certain angles ..... equally so on all keys. The distortion from reflected light at certain angles makes the smaller symbols on some keys unreadable from the glare, which is not the case on any of my other ThinkPads.
I do not see this on my T42, T61p or T500 units .... all keys look equally clear and smooth from any angle on those units.
I'm under warranty so should I call support, or is this the new normal for newer ThinkPads?

Thanks ... they all become unreadable (especially the small blue ones) when light reflects off them at certain angles .... very different from my other 5 ThinkPads when viewed from those same angles.
Probably just a "bad-day" production error during the applique process on the keys ..... you have to hold it at certain angles to truly catch it .... I'll call warranty tech support (besides, my right shift key is sticking intermittently).

Bad audio quality of Nokia 6120 classic

Why does my Nokia 6120 classic music/ audio quality is so bad?! When I play the music using the earphone, the audio quality was so bad. I bought this phone 6 months ago.

If you would like to customise your sound quality I suggest playing around with the equalizer feature. The equalizer feature can be found inside the Media Player. The equalizer has some preset levels but also empty slots for you to make you own custom levels

Ableton Live 6 vs Logic Pro 8 CPU usage/audio quality.

Hi,
Any user's have feedback regarding CPU usage between Abelton Live 6 vs Logic Pro 8. I'm currently running Live 6 on an MBP 2.0ghz (CD) and am constantly running into audio drop outs etc etc.I am reading throughout the net that Logic Pro 8 is more CPU friendly than LIve 6... is this true, overall? Also any users ever do a mixing test between the two apps to see if there was an audio difference when rendering your final project to aiff or wav? I am thinking on using Live 6 as a stratch pad to "create" as I enjoy it's flexibility then transfer the project over to Logic, however that depends if there really is a difference in CPU usage and Audio quality between the two DAW's.

Logic 8 is very CPU friendly, I can say that much. I never found Ableton Live 5 to be very taxing either, though. Pro Tools is.
But like you I use Ableton as a scratchpad, I love how it works, and Logic for the finishing touches. But that's just because I'm not good at Logic yet. Not fast at it.
Get them both! You'll be glad you did.

Can I use iMovie to edit and enhance both video and audio of my homemade DVDs?

I have a lot of homemade DVDs converted from old VHS tapes. The video and audio quality need to be edited/enhanced. Can I use my iMovie 11 for this task? If not what are my options? Thanks.

There are several layers to this Q
• VHS-tapes has a low quiality as is
• converted to sort of .mpe2 to a DVD to be played on standard DVD-player - Quality is futher lost
• converting it back to DV or AIC - and more quality is lost
• edit it in iMovie'08 to 11 - even more quality is lost due to that when going from Event's to Project's - every second line building up the picture is discarded (as non of them - iM'08 to 11 - works woith interlaced SD-video
So if quality is of any interest - I would - and are doing
• Converting from VHS-tapes
- via a CANOPUS ADVC-300 - to digital
- in via FireWire to
- to iMovie HD6 or FinalCut (any version) - asa they all keep 100% of the interlaced SD-quality
- edit and put out on miniDV tape (still 100% preserved) or to a DVD made in iDVD with all that keep as high quality possibly. (No Video-DVD can keep 100% quality - it's due to standard and amount of compressing)
If Quality is of no importance - then
• DVDs needs to be converted to DV or AIC and this is no free standard on any Mac - You need a converting program as
- MPEG StreamClip (free on internet) + BUT it needs the .mpeg2 Component from Apple to work ($20)
- Roxio Toast™ - can also be used to back engineer - BUT this cost's much more - still to me all extras was more than worth it
- Analog way - DVD-player - A/D-box - import via FireWire

Capturing Video (and audio) in iMovie 09?

Hello-
I need to import some video and audio form some beta tapes and am wondering if this can be done in iMovie 09? Some of the tapes are hour long documentaries that i have scored and I have read on this forum that people have run into problems when trying to capture more than 5 minutes of footage. I have also read that there have been issues capturing the audio.
Would I have more success capturing in FCE? Picture and audio quality is paramount for me.

You can import into iMovie '09, but you need some kind of analog-digital video converter.
Apple sells this one: http://store.apple.com/us/product/TJ555LL/A
but there are many other devices available. Some with less features are substantially cheaper.
My old Firewire connected camcorders can do this conversion, but not all can, so take a look at your camcorder's manual if you do not already know.
iMovie can take the Firewire output of your converter and capture the import directly to your disk.
The video output quality of VCR tapes will not be as high as digital sources, but, in my experience, you will certainly lose some video quality with iMovie '09. I suggest you test a short segment captured or imported into iMovie '09. If you see video too much degradation, test with FCE. FCE will retain all the quality that your VCR tapes can offer.

Is there something inbetween CD-ROM and FULL QUALITY??

When it's time to share my movie, is there something inbetween CD-ROM and FULL QUALITY? CD-ROM is 163 MB and FULL QUALITY is 6 GB. I know I can choose EXPERT SETTINGS, but I always get a huge file and would like to know if anyone out there knows of a good setting in Expert Setting that isn't as big as FULL QUALITY but is better than the CD-ROM setting.

You don't want viewers trying to download a 6GB file. It's (.dv) not for Web use.
You would probably be best with a 320X240 .mov file as they will fit the page content of a blog better than a 640X480 size and will also be about 4 times smaller in file size.
Make a one minute "Full Quality QuickTime" (.dv) from your current Project. Use a scene that has medium amount of video motion.
Use that .dv file in a new "test" iMovie Project.
Export using Expert Settings
Choose Movie to QuickTime Movie
Click the "Options" button and choose H.264 Video codec and AAC audio
Adjust the data rate and the audio quality and export 4 different files using slightly different settings
Compare these new files using QuickTime Player
You'll quickly figure out what settings work best for your file. Compare file size to video and audio quality. Web viewers are used to low quality video (YouTube as proof) and really like smaller file sizes over quality.
You could continue testing using MPEG-4 Video codec (instead of H.264) as it has a higher installed user base so more viewers could view your file.

A few questions - audio quality, and remote capability

1) What is the audio quality of songs streamed from airplay?
2) Is there any way to change the volume of a song using the iphone/ipad remote?

Not sure about the actual specs of Airplay SQ.
Using the ATV2 to access your iTunes Library you must control the volume with the volume control of the device through which you have the audio routed.. ie TV or Stereo. There is no volume level on the ATV2 remote or in the interface of the ATV OS that I can see.
Using the ATV2 as a speaker for iTunes from your Mac or PC you can control the volume through iTunes on the Mac or PC.
Using the Remote App on iPhone 4 or other device you can control iTunes on your Mac or PC. In addition you can select the ATV2 as a speaker for iTunes directly from the Remote App and in turn have control of the volume from the iPhone 4.
I like the last way best. Easier to navigate library, make selections and control volume all from anywhere within range of your wifi connection.

Iphone 4 sudden decrease in audio quality and right earphone not working

This is really strange --- my iPhone 4 suddenly stopped playing music in the right headphone - in all headphones and even in my car AUX jack. Also, the sound in the left headphone is remarkably muffled and low quality.
But if I pull the jack out a tiny bit, right before it comes out all the way, sound plays normally through both headphones for a split second.
I tried the cotton swab and rubbing alcohol, tried compressed air.. any ideas what could be the cause? I'm beginning to think it might be like a connector or something deep in the jack got loose maybe?
