Earphone output

Beginning yesterday I began to hear buzzing in the left channel of the earphone, then complete silence. I've been using Sony MDR V6 earphones with receivers since 1991 without a single problem, and have used these same phones exclusively on the iMac since we purchased it in 2011. We don't use bass boost or any other equalization. I checked the earphones with an AV receiver and both left and right channels play back properly, so the phones are not broken. I plugged a second set of Sony MDR V6 phones into the iMac and the result is the same: distortion, especially in the bass, then no sound at all. Oddly enough, the iMac speakers function as they should, but we're missing the extended frequency response and private listening of the earphones.
Does anyone have an idea of what could be wrong with our iMac's earphone output?
Thanks.

Under AppleCare the local Apple Store replaced the logic board, 3.4 GHz, Quad-Core i7. Since the repair the iMac audio has been perfect. There were no out-of-pocket expenses.

Is there a difference between the earphone output and the audiooutput of the docking connector of the iphone 4, or is it in fact the same signal ?

One basic difference is that the LTE frequencies each is able to operate on are different. After that, it is pretty much the same phone. Others might be able to add to this.

I have just bought my first Mac a MacBook Air 11 ". Thwe external output doesn't work . Do I have to make a choice between internal and external speakers? If so, How?

  • My iphone ticks on light pressure at the back side and the earphones output makes a weird cycling noise, warrenty?

    Like the topic says...

Take it in to Apple and see if they will replace it under warranty... only they can make that decision.  IMO, it sounds as if it should be a warranty replacement, assuming there's no user damage.

  • 80Gb  video output

I have an 80Gb iPod and have tried to output video. I have used a component video cable that works perfectly with my iPod touch, with no success. I have also tried using a generic 3rd party cable from the earphone output to RCA video, rt/lft. Any suggestions are appreciated. Thank you,n

Not really a reply, but I solved this problem by resetting the iPod and then resynching. Now outputs using component video cable.

  • MSI 94GT MD 512 no audio to TV via HDMI

    Greetings,
I have an MSI 94GT MD512 (aka n9400GT MD 512) video card installed in an Asus N4L-VM DH motherboard, connected to a Sony Bravia KDL-26L5000 TV via HDMI. Video card S/PDIF internal cable connected to S/PDIF Out and Ground connectors on motherboard. Video works okay, but I get no audio signal via the HDMI. (I can get analog sound via a Y-cable connected to earphone output on computer and RCA audio input on TV.)
NVIDIA driver is 195.62 (8.17.11.9562), NVIDIA control panel shows Sony TV monitor set for HDMI-HDTV (Audio enabled), Windows 7 control panel sound setting is for Digital Audio S/PDIF as default, audio indicator on taskbar indicates sound on S/PDIF.
            Suggestions welcome. Thanks.
                                                                            Rick

I guess I solved my own problem (by inferring the answer from another post on this forum). Although video can go simultaneously through the HDMI and DVI ouputs, it appears that for digital sound to work only one of those connectors can be connected. With only the HDMI connected to the TV (DVI physically disconnected from the card), I get both video and sound to the TV.

  • Updated driver produces distorted line-in au

I have an Audigy Z2, and it's worked fine for a long time. Occasionally I listen to radio or TV output through the PC headphones, via a stereo cable from the earphone output of the radio or TV to the line-in on the sound card. Quality's fine, and it coexists perfectly with game, video, or other sounds produced on the computer. Lately, trying to diagnose a CTD issue in a game, I updated the Audigy driver to one from October 2006 or so, the latest that Creative's site offers. Since then, when running a game using hardware sound, the line-in quality is severely distorted. I'm very disappointed by this, and I'm hoping you guys might have some ideas on what to do. I've repeatedly tried reinstalling the driver, performing a clean driver wipe and install, etc., and no go. Is this a problem with this driver? I have no competing sound drivers to my knowledge, and device manager doesn't show anything else besides the "Audio Codec" style entries which can't be disabled and don't seem like they would interfere. I've recorded a sample of this using audio from the weather channel. Right click, save, play. http://home.roadrunner.com/~jcrichman/sound_test.mp3?Around 3 seconds in, a game I started takes over the sound, or whatever it does, and you can hear the distortion start. The voice guy on the weather channel starts up at 3 seconds in, and you can really hear the distortion. At 38 seconds in or so, I've closed the game and you can hear the distortion go away. The remaining sound quality is perfectly normal; any remaining static or distortion is a result of either the weather channel audio or the sound quality of the mp3 file. Hopefully, you can hear that reverb-style distortion I'm referring to. Any ideas? For the record, I'm on Windows 2000 professional, I have 2 gb of RAM, in a 2.8ghz P4, with an ATI Radeon 9600. This problem is also not limited to the game. The one used for that sound test was Battlefield 2, but it happens pretty much on any game I can set to use Hardware sound.Message Edited by JBlitzen on 04-9-20070:27 AM

I've never had a setup like yours, but the problem does sound familiar. Maybe you could see what happens if you try disabling CMSS or CMSS2 in the Audio Console, just for curiosity's sake, though it probably won't help.
It definitely sounds like a driver issue from what you've said, and I'd try contacting support more directly if I were you, but good luck getting them to tell you anything but "we'll RMA it for you". And if they do offer a replacement, you should probably refuse unless you enjoy wasting time.
Wish I could be of more help.

  • Why lower audo levels when connecting to home stereo system

I have connected an audio cable to the earphone output on the Nano. This cable has two RCA connectors that connect to the line-in of my home stereo system. It works fine except for one thing. The volume is lower than other sources that feed into a "line-in" input. To make things even across the system, is there some type of devise that will increase the output level of the headphone jack on the Nano? Or does using an Apple cable make any difference. I would think this little problem is just a case of the headphone output being of a lower output level than a "line-out" output.
    Thanks for suggestions.

"I would think this little problem is just a case of the headphone output being of a lower output level than a "line-out" output."
It is, which is why many people who want to do this use the iPod dock, which has a proper 'line out' socket.

  • Switching to FCE

I use iMovie HD for my lecture/sermon videos. Each video is approximately 1.5 hours in length, 22 total tapes. When I get home, I load into computer. Total of 33 hours to load, let alone the editing etc.
For this reason I'm looking into a hard drive camcorder, 120 GB or so, that will be compatible with FCE. The camcorder MUST have a remote microphone input, earphone output and be able to use a remote tripod. I sometimes have to follow a lot of movement back and forth between the lectern, white board and back again. lots of zooming and panning.
The majority of my videos will be in standard mode, burned to DVD's and mailed out to persons to play on DVD players.

    Alchroma,
Thanks for your response to my post. I use the Sony DCR-TRV120 8MM camcorder with Sony's remote tripod for my presentations. The DCR-TRV120 has all the features needed except it records to tape.
Sony has "dumbed down" their newest camcorders. Have to get the most expensive ones to be able to use a remote (wireless) microphone and the and an earphone jack to monitor the sound.
The Sony 120GB HDR-XR500V has the features I need, but I would have to get the newest tripod or use an adapter to convert to LANC so I could use my older tripod.
The only other option is the 240GB HDR-XR550V. I would purchase this one if money was no option.

  • Vehicle Dock connect with line out exist?

    Mornin' all,
I have a 3G 40G iPod that has a Griffin Airclick Wireless remote occupying the top connections so the earphone output is 'taken'. What I'm looking for is a product that has a dock connection on the bottom that can charge and specifically has a 'Line Out' much like the home dock, but this one needs to work in a vehicle. Does anyone know if such a product is made, or a possible work around?
    Thanks a bunch...

You may want to look at reviews online.
Also, why don't you want to use a dock?

Were you previously using the Manually manage music setting (you added songs by dragging them to the iPod in iTunes)?  If so, and you then set up the Music tab for the iPod in iTunes to sync ONLY one album, and clicked the Apply button, you are now using the automatic sync setting (instead of doing it manually).
The Music tab for the iPod defines how you want iTunes to sync your iTunes library to your iPod.  If you only selected one album on the Music tab, syncing will replace the current content of the iPod with just that one album.
If the above does not describe your situation, please post back with more details.

  • Start up sound too loud

Hi there , how do you stop the blasting sound every time i start the mac most of my work at night it's too loud how do change that. i looked in system preferences i couldn't it find how to do it. can you help me thanks.

From my experience, the volume your speakers are set to, is the volume your startup sound is set at i.e. low volume - low startup sound; high volume - high startup sound. Also, I noticed that it differentiates the volume setting between your speakers and earphones/output plug. In System preference you'll notice there are two volume controls, one for alerts and the other for output devices so one of those have got to control the startup sound.
Please let me know if that sorts it out.

  • 10.6.8 Sound goes to television but not on to external amp.

I have a Mac Mini that feeds into my Toshiba television. Connected via HDMI and earphone output. The television is connected to an external amp.
The television plays the output from the computer. It also plays output from Virgin box.
The amp only plays sound from the virgin box and nothing from the computer.
    It used to work.
    Could anybody explain?

Hitting the Log Out button in the MobileMe panel worked. I can now connect to both the SnowLeopard and Lion servers just like I used to.
My condition appears to have been slightly different from yours, gmia - the MobileMe on my MBP had the correct info, but hose are not the credentials i use to remote to the two servers. I'm guessing that for some reason ScreenSharing began using my MobileMe credentials instead of what I had saved in the keychains.
Wonder if it had anything to do with the shutdown of the MM servers. That would be odd as using ones apple ID to log into a Mac remotely was new with Lion, and I had the same problem with our SnowLeopard server - which I remote into much more frequently.
Probably didn't hurt though to reboot the entire network...
