Earthquake ruined my iMac

When I press the power, the fans start up and the light flashes unusually rapidly indicating a fault I suspect.
Anyway, if anyone knows of any trouble shooting techniques I can try, please let me know.
I've taken the front off and had a look to confirm all of the fans are going, but I can see no visible damage to the parts, it seems the tumble as dislodged something causing the LCD to no longer function...

yikes, i'm sorry to hear about your computer; but I'm glad your OK.
You could try a SMC reset. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
if you can get the start up chime, you could try a NVRAM reset. http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1379
how many beeps do you hear?
is it a 3 short, 3 long, 3 short beeps?
or is it 1 to 5 beeps that repeats? http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1547
or just one long loud beep?

If restoring to the previous state from backup isn't an option (hopefully it is), it may be easier to try to resolve what is causing problems. It's possible that some incompatible software you have installed is messing with the smooth running of your Mac.
Can you describe more fully what problems you are experiencing? You could also run EtreCheck and post the contents of its report here - it may reveal the cause as there is some software 'out there' that is known to create problems: http://www.etresoft.com/etrecheck

  • Recent update just ruined my iMac

So, i just updated my imac with iTunes 7.6, and the new OSX (10.4.11) update. Well the download went smoothly, and when i restarted it took over 2 hours to boot. Then, when it finished, now over half of my programs will not start. Those programs include, my Widgets, iTunes, MSN Messanger, iChat, iMovie, DvD Player, Preview, Adobe Photoshop 7, Adobe Flash, Safari, and much much more. Luckly, im suriving with Fire Fox and WoW on that comp, and I am using my My Macbook when my mother is not borrowing it.
Can anyone help me fix this problem and/or know why it happened?

I used disk utility to repair the permissions before i even posted this. It repaired a couple other things, but nothing from my current issue. Nothing.
The icons bounce for about 5 minutes, then they stop bouncing and disappear. So obviously, its trying to start the program, but it just wont.
Sadly though, i have also tried completely uninstalling some of these programs also getting rid of their extra documents, and preferences, completely getting rid of aqny trace of them, then bringing them back.
But that has not helped at all.

  • Ruined my imac

Installed mountain lion and computer starting hanging up on every application. Ater a couple o reboots (now my eph key is not working!) it looks like my hard drive is completely trashed!
Now I have to buy a new hard drive? What's going on????

    HI,
    1. Back up all of your data on your HD
    2. press command+space bar     and type in 'Disk Utility' and press enter
    3. Click on Macintosh Hd and press verify disk.
    4. If there are any errors, you will have to shut down your computer.
    5. turn on your computer and press command + r   while it is booting up.
    6. Press disk utility  and select macintosh HD and press verify disk
    7. After you press verify disk, press (in order) 'repair disk',  'verify disk permissions',  'repair disk permissions'
8.Once done, restart your computer. If the error still occours, you will have to reset it to factory settings and restore it from a backup. I will tell you how to do that if my first step didn't work.
    hope this helps.

  • Are there any known compatibility issues with iMac and Google Chrome?

Does anyone know of any compatibility issues with iMac and Google chrome. A Facebook friend who is a photographer posted recently that Chrome had ruined his iMac. He stead that it ran an update on itself that made safari and chrome unusable - slow running overall. In the end he had to reinstall his OS.
Is anyone aware of this and should I un-install Chrome off my Mac?
    Thanks,
    S.

There is nothing official but your post will attract a variety of personal experiences.   I once loaded Chrome and found myself with the dreaded MacKeeper malware, loads of pop ups and conflicts with my system.   Part of the problem is the huge range of add ons you are tempted to  take on, many of which are not as strictly tested as Apple extensions.   I would say, unless you have a specific reason, leave it alone.   The best browser is Firefox and for Macs, Safari is OK.

  • IOS4: iTunes could not back up...because a session could not be established

After successfully installing iOS4 yesterday and using it for awhile, this morning I started receiving the "could not back up because a session could not be established with the iPhone" message. This occurs on sync after several sync messages have displayed in the iTunes status window.
I have restarted the Mac, reconnected the iPhone, blown out all the connectors, etc.
    ?????

I have the same problem. Even more so: 10.6.4 completely ruined my iMac, to the point everything I did became a beachball party. After 20 € of phone calls to AppleCare, had to erase the HD and restore stuff from an early-June back-up. Furthermore, only updated to 10.6.3.
Now, regarding the iPhone, I get the same message everyone in this thread is getting: *"..because a session could not be established."*
I really don't want to restore to factory settings and - again - resintall everything and lose progress on games (+30) and reconfigure apps. I did this already. Did NOT solve the problem.
I am at a loss for words towards Apple. Who tests their software. Drunk managers that leave phones on bars? Is that it?
Also: tried the "Hard reset" option. Problem remains.
When restoring to factory settings, or choosing to backup from a backup session, I get the message "won't change the iphone's firmware", meaning, i won't be able to go back to 3.1.3, right?
This and 10.6.4 = fail. Its the end of any early adopting from me.

  • Install os x without iTunes account

    Hi all,
I'm hoping one of you might be able to help me and I haven't just ruined the iMac I've only just got.
I've just bought a second hand 2010 27in iMac, and the guy I bought it off left all of his music and accounts etc on it. I've just wiped the hard drive thinking I could just reinstall os x from the disk that he gave me. But now that I've wiped it I can't seem to get the disk to do anything (it is a bit scratched, but not too badly). The mac wants to install os x from the app store but (i think) because I haven't authorised the computer on my account it won't let me log on and just says 'not available at the moment' and because the computer doesn't have an operating system, I can't now authorise it to my account.
Is there anything I can do?
    Cheers for any help,
    Mark

FYI - you have OS 9.2.2 installed on this Mac which
will provide for using what is called the "Classic"
    environment under OS X.
If you don't install Tiger via an Erase & Install,
you won't or shouldn't lose anything.
    Thanks for the info.
I've managed to get Tiger OS X running alongside my original Classic.
    RESPECT!

  • Please Help - Hard Drive Gone - Won't Mount - No AppleCare...

    Hi guys,
    I'm in trouble here..
I was loading a bunch of photos from an external drive to iPhoto and my iMac froze up for a long time.
    I couldn't do anything at all - so I finally force-powered down.
When I powered back up - My Hard Drive was gone and Finder will not open.
Other applications in my dock such as web browsers, iTunes etc. seem to be unaffected - I can also access Disk Utility and other Apps through Spotlight, but No sign of my "Macintosh HD".
I ran a "Verify Disk" in Disk Utility - and here's the report it provided:
    Verifying volume “Macintosh HD”
    Checking HFS Plus volume.
    Checking Extents Overflow file.
    Checking Catalog file.
    Checking multi-linked files.
    Checking Catalog hierarchy.
    Checking Extended Attributes file.
    Checking volume bitmap.
    Checking volume information.
    Volume Header needs minor repair
The volume Macintosh HD needs to be repaired.
Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit
    1 HFS volume checked
    Volume needs repair
---The "Repair Disk" Button in Disk Utility is all grayed out though so I can't run it...
I'm at a loss. I can't afford AppleCare, and they won't help me because I'm just out of my 90 day phone support...
I'm on an Intel Core 2 Duo iMac - the last Glossy White one before the new ones.
I've got the latest version of Tiger.
Any advice would be a Godsend. I'm afraid I may have ruined my iMac.
    Thanks!

We usually try to give folks who come here simplified advice that keeps them comfortable troubleshooting and repairing their Macs and won;t raise other issues for them. Command line tools don't usually fall into the simplified category and fsck for Mac OS X Tiger is not recommended by Apple, except as a last resort. It is known to cause other issues.
    From the Apple Knowledge Base article that Dale has linked below;
Note: If you're using Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you should use Disk Utility instead of fsck, whenever possible.
If you can successfully start up in Safe Mode or use Disk Utility while started up from a disc, you don't need to use fsck.
IMO, it isn't helpful for you to come along and contradict sound advice from folks who have used the Knowledge Base and are aware of Apple's recommendations because you think that you know better.

  • Yellow iMac ruins Christmas

First, my fiance and I have had great experiences with apple products in the past (2 iPhones, more than 5 iPods, 2 Macbooks, and a Powerbook).
Recently, however, I purchased an iMac 21.5 (week 50) as a Christmas gift for my fiance and notice upon setting it up that the screen is very discolored on the bottom (turns yellow, top to bottom).
I went to the Apple store and they told me that it is a known issue and they gave me a new one (week 46) but refused to let me try it. I brought it home and it had the exact same issue (possibly worse).
I called Apple Support and they instructed me that I had to go back to the Apple store and that they should let me try the iMac before I bring it home.
I went to the Apple store and they exchanged my iMac again. I loaded it up in the store and the same yellow tint issue existed. The Genius saw the yellow problem and acknowledged it but was told by a manager that they could no swap it out again (and try to find an unaffected model) and did not know how to repair it. The genius told me my only option was to return it. I ended up just returning the iMac for a refund by mail.
I have spoken with 2 different senior claims people from phone support. The first, Hector said that it's a known problem with the hardware and that repairs are possible. The second, Alana, was a bit rude and claimed it was a software issue and there was no fix.
It's just frustrating because the iMac was a Christmas gift to my fiance and we still don't have a working computer. It seems like there is a disconnect between phone and store support.
    What should I do?
    Thanks for your help,
    Dan & Rachel

There is nothing that you can do at this point, you do not have a Mac and they are sending you a refund for your money. You do not have any more bargaining power at this point.
If you shop around at various venues that sell the iMac besides an Apple Store and find a good one, buy it on the spot. As long as you buy sight unseen, then the risk is the same, you may get a yellow one. And if the Apple Store near you is unwilling to look in the boxes before selling the Mac you are out of options with them.
It is unfortunate that Apple's display vender is letting them down so badly with these poorly manufactured displays. Really poor quality products is giving Apple an unfortunate reputation lately. And with so many lemons their pristine reputation for excellent customer support is taking a hit as well as poorly trained agents act rudely and offer inaccurate information. I am sure that it is frustrating to them to not be able to do better.
I think that you can be sure that Steve Jobs is very concerned about all of this and is demanding that his company do better. It is too bad that the whole world is depending on China for so much in electronics manufacturing and yet they are not currently capable of living up to the expectation. That is why the old adage still applies; "Do not put all of your eggs in one basket."

  • YOSEMITE 10.10.1 ruined my WiFI on my iMac

There is no info on what is going on
Since the 10.10.1 update my wifi is diabolical on my IMAC internet freezes and pages take forever to load.
All my tablets and iPads/iphones work perfectly so there is no router or provider issues.
Running a loose Ethernet lead through the house works perfectly on the iMac too but long term this is not what i purchased an iMac for to have a cable through the house.
Also if someone falls over the cable can we blame apple??
    Any solution would be appreciated.
I have reset the machine and also deleted all the preferred networks not required.

  • Firmware update on MBP ruins connection with iMac

After the firmware update yesterday, the finder on my MacBook Pro is no longer able to transfer files from my iMac to my MBP or vice versa. Most folders on my other mac are visible, but some crash the finder, transferring files gets part of them moved over, but then it stalls and crashes the finder.
Seems like a serious bug. Or has the firmware update simply removed the file transfer possibility at all?
Reinstalling Lion wasn't even possible as the recovery program stalled as well. It was not possible to choose a language. Looks like a serious problem.
Any good suggestions to fix this?

After several hours of downloading, Lion was reinstalled. I had thought that my recovery stick would be enough to recover Lion, but it took hours and hours of downloading ("additional components") and installing to get it back. Wifi flipped out each time, so that did not work, I had to use an ethernet cable for the connection. And I don't know if the existing problem with the finder (not being able to properly connect to my iMac and transfer files) has been solved now. I'm a bit afraid to check it out. Just imagine the problem still exists!
Anyway, if this is the future, downloading restored os x and apps from the Apple servers, then I am afraid I'll let this cup pass from me.
    I am still shaking.

  • IMac ruined ? black ashes and burning scent!

    Hi ya'll.
Seems a bit rude to just barge in here with my problem but anyway
About 2 years ago I bought a 17"iMac at the Switch-Store in Antwerp. It's run smoothly and has been a great computer and creative tool for me up till now.
This morning when I turned it on,I heard a loud popping noise and smelled like something got burned also there were ashes coming out of every opening (speakers,vent,etc)...it's completely dead. Now I'm anything but a pro but I know that can't be a good thing.
I've already been to the local Mac shop in town and they don't think it's anything that might be reparable but I can bring it in to have it checked out anyway if I want to.
Sooo, has this happened to anyone else or does someone have any idea what the ****'s happened, PLEASE help me out.

As I said, I've been surprised by the results of a power supply failure - you just never know. If the only thing wrong is a blow-out of ash and new power supply the cost will be far less than a new or refurb computer. Of course if the logic board or other component also died a new computer begins to make more sense. If you have a local reseller try dealing first - ask for a diagnostic and estimate with the understanding that the diagnostic fee will be waived if you decide to buy a new computer from them instead.
