EAS calc script security crashes essbase server

Hi,
We are using EPMA 11.1.1.2 and I am having some issues when I try to assign security in EAS to calc scripts. I navigate into EAS and select Security and then open the list of groups. I right click on groups and go to display group table. Next, I select a group and edit group properties. When I expand to the list of calc scripts for one of our apps, and select the script and click apply, about 8-10 esssvr.exe processes are running on the essbase server and the server won't respond. This is only true for calc scripts in one plan type, in one app. All other plan types are ok. I restored the app back to when this issue didn't occur and recreated all of the scripts but still get the issue. Anyone ever seen this before? Why are there so many esssvr processes running? I am going to do some analysis to see if it is just one script or all of them. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Hi,
Just check does it happen with other script against another app/plan type. I suppose you are using Windows , you can restart essbase and admin shared services and check if the same happens again.

EAS: I keep losing my Essbase Server Regestrations

More of an annoyance but I keep losing my Essbase server registrations in EAS randomly. On occasion when I log into EAS, the essbase servers I have added dissappear on me forcing me to add them back in. I can't seem to reproduce, just seems random. I've tried using EAS locally installed and the web app and they both have the same behavior. On 11.1.2.1 currently, I remember this ever being an issue in 9.3.x

I believe it is a bug and I am sure I saw a fix for it in the 11.1.2.2 documentation, the patches have not been officially released yet but it will bevery soon.

Essbase EAS Cannot Add or See Essbase Server

Hi,
Essbase 11.1.2.2. fresh install.
On EAS when trying to add a new server, or see a server list I get errors.
The server list is empty.
If I manually add a server along the lines of localhost:1423 or similar then I get network error 10061 failed to connect to localhost:1423
I have an identical install on another p.c. and have checked that all services that are up on the one that works are also up on the one that does not - they are.
Running valildation diagnostics my problem areas are; -
Hyperion Foundation;
Checking availability of HTTP context
http://myserver.local.net:19000/raframework/index.jsp Error: com.hyperion.cis.utils.BadResponseCodeException: Bad response code with GET method: 404
Recommended Action: Check that the application is started (Which application am I checking is started??)

Next Issues are present: Webanalysis_Product (id: 72038fa..........):
"PersistantKey" property missed
"Logical_Web_App" child missed
Agent (id: 72039fa....... different to above!)
"loglevel" property missed
Error: Checker execution failed
Recommended Action: Refer to the validation logs for exception details    - (where are these logs???)
Anyone assist in likely causes of my errors, and or tell me where to look for further detail??

Hi John,
I have reviewed the logs.
Both HyS9RAFrameworkAgentErr and Out are 'clean' - i.e. no errors reported, last status on Out is Starting Application....
However, HyS9EPMServer-syserr / sysout are less than clean...
I have a recurrent error =>
java.lang.NullPointerException
   at com.brio.one.client.ClientFactory.getDefaultGSM (Unknown Source)
   at com.brio.one.client.ClientFactory.connect (Unknown Source)
   at com.brio.one.services.mgmt.logging.ServiceHandler.getBusinessService (Unknown Source)
And - when I run validate Essbase is 'clean', but when I try to connect via MaxL I get the same socket error as when I try via EAS.
Any thoughts on what these mean John?

Shared Services doesnt show my Essbase server

Hi, im wondering if anyone out there can help.
I have been working on a new System9 Installation.
I have installed all of the Foundation software (Shared Services), Web analysis on a windows 2003 32 bit server and installed the Essbase application on a windows 64bit. I have gone through the configuration process and registered all of the products with shared services, however when i connect to shared services through http://SERVER:port/interop/ and sign in i cant see the essbase server? im really lost with this and not sure what to try.
I have set up my SQL databases and shared severices is talking to them i guess as SS works. (HSS, BIPLUS)
On all the setups i left the standard defualt credentials as the same. so on the essbase install the user name is admin and password, password for instence. Does this make a difference?
Any help will be greatly appreciated as i am very lost with this.

Hi,
You won't see the essbase server in shared services until you convert essbase to shared services security mode.
If you log into EAS and connect to your essbase server, expand the server and right click security, choose "Externalize Users", then follow the options to convert to shared services security, more detailed information available at :- http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E10530_01/doc/epm.931/html_eashelp/sec_mode.htm

what is the repository view for calc scripts

Are you looking for HBR rules, calc manager rules, or Essbase calc scripts?
Essbase calc scripts are in Essbase. (You can find them with .csc extension under app/your app/db folder)
HBR rules will be in EAS repository
Calc Mgr rules will be in Calc Mgr's repository

How to launch Calc Scripts from Analyzer

This message has resolved my query by setting a larger MAX_PROPERTY_VALUE_LENGTH to "30"Thanks.I have come across this problem before. If it is the same problem it is to do with the length of your calc scripts. Obviously Essbase calc scripts are stored as .csc files, if these are too big Analyzer can't read them. This issue is caused by the ADM layer that Analyzer uses. Search on the server for a file called adm.properties .You should find the file in the following directory \\hyperion\analyzer\adm\lib .You may find you have more than one copy on the Server in which case edit them all. In the file find a string called MAX_PROPERTY_VALUE_LENGTH. You will find this is currently to 4 (this respresents 4kb). Increase the value to say 20. Save changes, restart Analyzer Service and hopefully this should have fixed the problem. I would love to know if this works. Paul Armitage. Analitica Ltd. www.analitica.co.uk

Can "Planners" run calc script from the Planning web?

This is probably a really naive question.
However, can planners run a simple calc script(created in Essbase/AAS) from Workspace/Planning Web? If so what access would they be need to setup in Shared Service?
Or do we have to convert the calc script into a Business Rule and then grant access to the users?

Here are the roles that i assigned my user and he can view/launch the calc scripts from Planning Web without actually being an admin( i think)
Analytic Servers : server access
Business Rules: Administrator
Planning App : Interactive User
APS : Provisioning Manager
I would also like to conver the calc script to a BR as suggested, but not sure why i see no users available in the Business Rules-> administration tab.
As indicated above, the use has been provisioned as a BR admin!
Also, i tried refreshing the app with filters, refreshing the user list from BR->admin(right mouse), de-provision and re-provision the user! Any ideas??

Essbase server startup by using OPMN.

we are planning to start Essbase server by using OPMN.
Version: 11.1.2.1
Currently, we are using the below line code in our batch script to start Essbase server but we wanted to start the Essbase.
$ARBORPATH/bin/startEssbase.sh -b
I have gone thru docuemnt and came to know that , I need to use the below commnad to start Essbase server by using the below command.
opmnctl startproc ias-component=EssbaseInstanceName.
My question is here, can I keep the same line of code in my existing batch script to start the Essbase server ?
Did anyone one call the this (opmnctl startproc ias-component=EssbaseInstanceName) line of code in start up/batch scripts ? As we are implementing first time.
Please share your thoughts and sugguestions. your help highly appreciated.

We have setup Essbase clustering. There are two servers involved in Essbase clustering.
Can you please let me know , Do we need to start OPMN on two Essbase servers or only one Essbase server. if it is on One server, how it will interact with other server.

Run calc script via business rule

Hello all,
I have calc scripts and business rules in my hyperion essbase.
one of the calc scripts e.g. aggregates some values.
In the business rule i copied the code from the calc script and this business rule can be executed in the planning tool.
Now, everytime when i change the code from the calc script, i have to change same things at the business rule.
And now my question:
Is it possible to start a calc script with the business rule?
e.g. content of business rule: execute "calc_aggregate"
Is there a command?
Then it would save time and i only have to change the calc script and not both.

1) try to use essbase 9.3 with dataexport command in calc script (this version essbase is compatible with planning versions 9x and 4.1)
2) you can write (or found in google) UDF function for run system command or (and) export data set
3) you can run system command from Planning web and run CSC and RUL from essmsh

Well business rules are really just calc scripts with a few additional features.
So to understand business rules a good place to start is looking at calc script functions and commands, the essbase technical reference includes details on all this :- http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E10530_01/doc/epm.931/html_esb_techref/techref.htm
If you get stuck on calc scripts then the essbase forum is also a good place to ask for advice as there are many experts on there.
I have not seen many sources for information relating to just business rules.

Server crashes after running Calc Scripts Verison II

I running 11.1.2.1 on my laptop, and after After runnning a calc scripts ... and shutting down essbase I am attempting manually start up my Essbase system, and now the Foundation services, and essbase admin services are taking forever too start, then once i am able too start Essbase EAS/ Adminstration Server = stopped
are these the right logs

Essbase performance issue when calc scripts are run on FDM cube on same server

We have a large Essbase application which has high usage on a daily basis, which is being impacted when we run Calc scripts on an FDM forecast cube which is on the same server. The large application is on EIS 11.1.2 and the FDM cubes are being migrated to the same server and also being upgraded from EIS 7.1 on Unix to EIS 11.1.2 on NT. Every time the Calc scripts are run on the FDM cube, the performance of the Essbase application is degraded and it shuts down after some time.

Unable to expand Essbase server in EAS console

I have recently installed and configured Oracle Hyperion EPM Essbase 11.1.2.2 in a distributed virtual environment (One Foundation/WLServer VM, One Essbase VM, One Oracle11g DB VM). Host OS: MS Win server 2008 x64 (SP1).
I am using Native Directory for authentication.
I am able to login and connect to the Essbase Administration server in the EAS console. But when I try to expand the Essbase server in the EAS console, the Hy9Seas.exe process gets crashed in the background (Hyperion Admin services - web application service stops).

I am able to log into Essbase server via MaxL shell (essmsh.exe).I have checked out all the logs on Essbase server, they are fine. The Hyperion Shared Services console is working fine as well.
I have tried to increase the Maximum message size & POST timeout to maximum in WLServer. I have also removed firewall from all the ports of the VMs. But nothing seems to work.
I went through other such cases of this error on OTN, John Goodwin's blog and internet but I could not find a conclusive solution anywhere.
Can some one please help me figure out where the problem might be? Point me to some logs?

The error "<Internal error: java.net.SocketException: socket write error: Connection aborted by peer...." can be ignored as it is common message.
It might be worth checking out the EAS patches because I think some of them address problems with EAS crashing, also if you are using the web console make sure a supported java version is being used.

Security on Calc Scripts in Excel Addin

We have a requirement where users will be running Calc scripts in Essbase through Excel addin. is there any way that I can restrict users to use only particular Calc Script. Any help will be greatful.

If you externaized Essbase security to Shared Services then you would grant the user access to run a calc in Shared services, similar to doing it in EAS.
One thing to note, Calc access by itself will give a user full write access to the entire databae unless you have a security filter to limit what they can read/write. If you are granting calc access, be sure you are also setting up a filter.
