Easiest, cheapest way to create a central file server

Can anyone recommend the easiest and cheapest way to create a file server.
I want to share files between four networked Macs.
I don't want to have to use OSX Server as it seem like overkill - I only need to share some files.
Back in OS9 days, I used to use a spare Mac with multiple users set up. But how do I do it in OSX.
Can I just set up the four users onto a Mac and put all the files in the Shared folder? Are there any permissions issues in doing this?
Is there a way to connect directly to the shared folder of one Mac from one of the others?
Is there a way to connect automatically on login?

sharepoints is your answer. It allows you to setup any folder or volume as a sharepoint. it allows you to create users and groups in the same way as the workgroup manger of osx server does.

yes there are permissions involved.
have read through a thread whereby I posted a brief explanation of the users and groups relationships in OSX.
Topic: local network - passwords - permissions

  • Is there a way to create an MMS FILE

    HEY ALL MACHEADS,
just want to know if there is way to create an MMS file on a mac with quicktime..or convert a quicktime to be sent via MMS ( from a blackberry say...)
I think its called viral video...??? any help would be great...
    orlando f

If you wanted to send a video as an mms from a mobile phone, the best option for exporting would be 3G in the quicktime export menu ( File > Export and it's in the drop down list).
Keep it short and small and you shouldn't have any probs. There are some miserly operators out there who block MMSs bigger than 100K

  • Is there any way to create 3D PDF file without having the model tree ?

Is there any way to create 3D PDF file without having the model tree ?
3D communication is good but sometime we don't want the receiver to be able to study every components in model.
or any way to make the receiver cannot use model tree and measurement tool ????
    Thank you very much

You can remove the assembly tree by doing a roundtrip in 3D Toolkit, here's how:
    - start Acrobat 3D
    - drag & drop a CAD file
    - click on 3D Annot to activate
    - right-click on 3D
    - select 'Edit in 3D Toolkit'
    - 3D Toolkit launches
    - click in 'Scene Tree' panel
    - right-click on top assembly name
    - select 'Tools->Collapse Hierarchy'
    - select 'File->Save'
    - select 'File->Exit'

  • Is there any way to create a setup file Like Visual Basic

    Hi,
I want to create a setup file of all developed foms and reports to install them to desireable location, is there any way to create a setup file in oracle, Like Vb.
    Raza

I believe there is something from Oracle but it was frustratingly buggy when I used it a few years back and only worked via the Oracle installer.
Personally, I'd recommend something like Innosetup, which is freeware and a Windows-style installer much like InstallShield etc. so it'll create an executable setup file probably OK if they've already got the Oracle Runtime components installed.

  • How can I set-up my mac mini server to be a central file server for my windows boxes (they don't see the mac on the network), and how do I set-up a central iTunes server so that all my devices sync to the mac mini?

I am looking for step by step instructions to configure my mac mini server to support the following:
    1. Central itunes server for all my devices (ipad, ipod, iphone, etc.)
    2. Central file server so that my windows devices can save and retrieve data from the central system (the mac does not show up in the network for the windows systems - all running windows XP or 7)
    Thanks,
    Keith

You will need to enable file sharing in System Preferences
as well as setting up sharing and permissions for the
directories that you want shared.  You may also want to
setup a non-administrative user or allow limited guest
access.  The user would require entering a user name and
password to make the connection, but would allow remotes
to change files, if set up tat way.
As for serving iTunes media, better to post in the iTunes forum.

  • Setting up permissions on a central file server...

I am setting up a central file server in a small network enviornment where the users will share a drive and jobs on the drive. Problem I am having is if I set up seperate users and one group that they all belong to, when someone creates a job in there home directory and then copies it to the server, the rest of the users access it as read only. I need them to be able to read and write to each others folders. Any solution other than creating one user that they all share (since that kind of defeates the perpose).
    Thanks in advance,
    Larry

The solution to your problem depends on whether you want to use ACLs or not.
If you are managing a server, you should crack open the manuals- the answer to your question lies within those pages. To point you in the right direction.....
If ACLs are NOT enabled for the volume. When you click the Share Point in WorkGroup Manager, then click the Protocols tab, you will see a check box for "Inherit Permissions from Parent". This is what you want.
If this option is greyed, then you DO have ACLs enabled for the volume.
The explanations for this are not short and managing a server requires reading, research and frustration.
ACLs work more reliably than the Posix 'inherit' permissions option does.
    That said....
A user of this forum put together an excellent guide to ACLs. Here's the link:

  • Is there a way to create a commentary file for the summary screen?

I am not seeing the summary screen in the list of commentary files in the \Development\include\commentary\en-CA\screen path. Is there a way to create a commentary for the summary screen?
    Thanks all.

    thanks Kristy,
I'm not sure of the best way to add any requests we have for future releases.
If there is one, let me know what is best.
Here is what I want to add.
In the properties file, one can set decision report preferences for an attribute - for invisible and silent.
I wish we could also set preferences for bold, and given that, I guess it makes sense to be able to set preferences for italic and underline
While these can be addressed through custom properties and XSLT, it obviously would be easier for the modeler to be able to select the attribute enhancement in the properties file. Given that decision reports can get very long, and there are attributes which might be better highlighted in some way, this would be a great approach.

  • WHAT IS THE BEST WAY TO CREATE AN XSD FILE (TO BE USED BY SOAP ADAPTER)

    Dear friends
    I have a simple scenario.
OUTBOUND DATA  -->  SOAP ADAPTER  --> ( XI )  -->  RFC ADAPTER  --> INBOUND DATA
The XML file that I got from mapping area of IR (Design) is as follows
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
    <ns0:MT_NAME_SOURCE xmlns:ns0="http://test3.com">
       <FIRSTNAME>DAVE</FIRSTNAME>
       <LASTNAME>SMITH</LASTNAME>
    </ns0:MT_NAME_SOURCE>
If you notice, there are only 2 fields.
I need to create an XSD file and import it as an external object, which I can use for SOAP Adapter.
Which is the best way to create it.
Also, I need to know if there is any step by step of sending a message from XML SPY. I have downloaded this software, but am not able to undertand how to use this.
Hope to hear from any experts on this forum.
    Thanks in advance
    Ram

    Hi Ram,
    See the below blog..
It shows how to send SOAP message using XML Spy.
It also shows how to generate wsdl.

  • Is there a way to create a .dmg file for a DVD inserted into the system

I am wondering if Snow Leopard has integrated any tools that can create a .dmg file for the CD or DVD inserted into the system?
If not, any recommendations for freeware 3rd party tools? Thanks

Insert the disc you want to create the .dmg from, then choose the disc in the left hand pane of Disk Utility. From the File menu, choose New > Disk Image from (name of disc).
EDIT: This is basically how it's done; however, there may be other steps involved, depending on the type of disc you're trying to copy and what your goals are with the .dmg. If you provide more details about what you're trying to achieve, maybe we can help you further.

  • Is There A Way To Create A Simple File/Folder Tree...

    Hi,
Please forgive me if this has already been covered but I have searched and found no answer...
I am trying to create a web page to run on my local network, through iweb and apache, and have got everything I need working except this. I aim to be able to access my work files (masses of word documents and power-points) through the website but I can see no obvious way of doing this through iweb (short of adding individual hyperlinks to each file). Is there a tool or process I can use to create a simple folder tree in html that I can add to my site that lists all my files and allows my to "save target as" in windows (our college techie is still devoted to windows) ?
Thanks in advance for any help...

  • Easiest/Quickest Way to Play .x264 video files

I have an older apple TV a brand new Macbook Air, and a Windows 8.1 system that is simply a beast.
I have a lot of .x264 video files on my Windows system and want to know the easiest way to play the best quality.  Do I need to convert them to another filetype? If so would a 10GB .x264 file be better converted on my faster Windows PC (new macbook is the upgraded 1.7ghz and 8gb RAM)? Please point me in the right direction.  1080p is a must and not spending 2hrs to convert every file would be nice.
I'm very new to Apple, i'm an IT guy and have long used Windows, but the new Macbook Air is going to be my primary Work/School/Media hub.  So excuse me if i'm missing anything obvious.

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
You may find you only need to strip off the container the video is in, the Apple TV requires.
        •    H.264 video up to 1080p, 30 frames per second, High or Main Profile level 4.0 or lower, Baseline profile level 3.0 or lower with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps per channel, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats
        •    MPEG-4 video up to 2.5 Mbps, 640 by 480 pixels, 30 frames per second, Simple Profile with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats
        •    Motion JPEG (M-JPEG) up to 35 Mbps, 1280 by 720 pixels, 30 frames per second, audio in ulaw, PCM stereo audio in .avi file format
If you find convention quicker on your PC use that.

  • Is there a way to create a postscript file in InDesign for a certain page size without a printer?

I need to set up a postscript file for my book to take it to print but I can set up the print settings for 11 by 17 in. paper. Is there a way to get around this?
    I am using a mac with cs6.

Is your print service provider requiring a PostScript file? Normally, they would require PDF with any reasonably modern workflow.
The print to PostScript Printer and Device Independent option is very limited. If there is a particular device your print service provider is using and requires PostScript for, they should be providing a particular PPD for you and thus, allow you to customize the PostScript for that device.

  • Easiest/cheapest way to be able to play itunes from my comp to my new ipad?

    Hi, I'm pretty annoyed as I've just received my new ipad 3 and found out I can't sync itunes from my version of Mac on my main computer, the details of which are;
    Model Name:
    iMac
      Model Identifier:
    iMac6,1
      Processor Name:
    Intel Core 2 Duo
      Processor Speed:
    2.16 GHz
      Number Of Processors:
    1
      Total Number Of Cores:
    2
      L2 Cache (per processor):
    4 MB
      Memory:
    1 GB
      Bus Speed:
    667 MHz
      Boot ROM Version:
    IM61.0093.B07
      SMC Version:
    1.10f2
I suppose it should have been pretty obvious but I don't feel I was warned about this and presumed I could use icloud via the internet or email myself the mp4s or something at the very worse. As this was one of the main reasons I bought the ipad I feel a bit hard done by! So, the only solution seems to be, to upgrade to a later version on my main computer. Could anyone advise me? It seems sensible to upgrade to the very latest version although would I have increase ram size to cope? Is this easy? What would the costs be? Would I still be able to run my existing programmes ok? I am not the most computer literate and am reduced to shouting at my poor mac quite easily...
Many, many thanks if you can help.
    Jo

The system requirements for the iPad, stated on Apple's web page and even on the iPad's box, clearly state the need for Mac OS X 10.5.8 or later so you can run the latest version of iTunes. So I do think you were indeed warned, as much as Apple can warn any potential buyer.
You'll need to get your iMac upgraded to a later version of Mac OS X before you will be able to sync your iPad to it. 10.6 Snow Leopard is right now the best option, and while the Apple Store no longer lists it on their web page, you can probably still buy a copy of you call the Apple Store directly. Other dealers such as Amazon may also still have copies. You will need to confirm that your applications and peripherals will support Mac OS X 10.6 and upgrade as necessary.
    Regards.
