Easiest est way to grab and watch home movie clips?

I have about 100 home videos on mini dv tapes. I want to go through them one by one, grabbing a few of the best clips for viewing on my big tv or a projector. Is the best way to do this (for quality and space) to grab the clips and put them into imovie, and then put them back on a new dv tape? I hear DVD's wont be the same quality. I guess I also could put the clips on my laptop(and or an external HD), and then hook that up to a projector or tv, but wouldn't they take up tons of space?
Thanks!

no because idvd is just amazing

  • Can I plug my iPad into my TV and watch a movie from iPad

If I download a movie from iTunes to my iPad, can I connect my iPad to the TV (flatscreen LG that is internet accessible) and watch the movie. In the same question, can I see my iPad on the TV in general when hooked up?
I didn't want to hook it up and try with fear of damaging my iPad.

As Rudegar pointed out, the AV cable is an adequate option. But another option is to purchase an Apple TV. That's the only way to use Airplay from an iOS device (for now). I'm pretty sure no OEM TV's support Apple's Airplay technology as of yet. Apple wants you to purchase the Apple TV so don't hold out hope that they'll license the tech to TV manufacturers any time soon.
Check out Apple's demo of Airplay on their website and see if that's an option you might like. The AV cable is cheaper but IMO a cable of any kind is a cumbersome work around. And the Apple TV allows you to also play music and look at your pictures from any iOS device as well.
Re: your other question: "Can I see my iPad on the TV in general when hooked up?". The answer is, "Not yet". Only the "output" (IE: music, video, slideshows) can be seen through Airplay or the AV cable. You can't use the TV as a second monitor for your iOS device.
Lastly, you can't "break" your device simply by trying to hook it up to your TV. I had the same issue with my father this holiday with trying to convince him he couldn't break his camera by trying to hook it directly up via the USB connector on the TV.

Now trying to work with my Mac. I have a USB cable, both ends fit, but iMovie '11 does not recognize it. Is there a driver fix for this?

What kind of Mac to you have?  This camera is a tape based DV one that connects best with firewire and I cannot tell if your Mac has firewire.  If your mac *does* have firewire, get a camcorder firewire cable and try again.
ETA:  Oops, I am pretty sure that all the "desktop iMacs" have firewire, so you should be good to go.  You will probably need a cord that goes from FW800 to your camcorder.

    Try this.
Open your home movie in QuickTime Player X. (Or right click on your home movie in the Finder and select Open With... QuickTime Player.

i had bought a HD-SP film on I-tunes, and watched the movie several times. but this morning it does'ent work and i have messege that i do not uderstand,
witch says "Try moving this window to a different display or disconnecting any displays that are not HDCP authorized"
    i'm lost
    please help me
    thx

I don’t know about projection, but I’m unable to watch HD content in iTunes because my Apple 30-inch Cinema Display is not HDCP-compliant (which is part of an HD copy-protection scheme).
The other movies you’ve projected, were they HD as well? If not, it could be the same problem: your projector is not HDCP-compliant.

  • Import home movie clips from DVD

    Hi all -
I've been trying to wrap my non-computer brain around the process of importing a previously burned home movie clip from DVD back into iMovie so I can add to it. (I messed up the first burn, but because of limited space, I deleted the original clip.)
I'd be happy to get it back to tape on my camcorder if that is the only way to do it, but I fear losing quality.
I've downloaded Mac the Ripper and Streamclip, but I don't want to pay extra money for any software (I'm a poor, starving student mom).
    Can anyone help out?
    Christine.

Your burned DVD uses MPEG-2 file format. You'll need more software:
    MPEG Streamclip (free).
    Apple's MPEG-2 PLayback Component ($20).
Use Streamclip to open the DVD contents and export to DV Stream (huge file). Use the .dv file in iMovie.

  • HT2518 I am trying to move across & view my home movie clips from my PC to Mac, but I can't view them.  What do I need to have installed on the MAC to view such files? (Originally put onto the MAC from a Canon video camera)

I am trying to move across & view my home movie clips from my old PC to my new Mac but I am unsure what software I need to view them.  They are from a Canon video camera originally.  Please advise how this is done!

Do they have a file extension?
How about anything on the camera which might indicate what it is, like AVCHD?

  • How to watch home movies on Apple TV?

I have home movies in IPhoto taken with my Canon Elph. Can I watch these on Apple TV? If so where do I find them?

I'm sure that will work, but is it all that necessary, surely it's simpler to drag the movie from the iphoto window to the itunes window.
If it is in the wrong format try advanced/convert selection for Apple TV. Some files may not convert this way, if so, come back for another method based on the type of file you have.

  • Problems downloading and watching first movie rental from iTunes

I wanted to try renting a movie through iTunes tonight and it has been constant problems on my Windows 7 64-but PC home theater PC with iTunes 10.5.  I was going to rent it through Amazon Video on Demand, but they didn't offer the movie in HD on a PC (I would need a Ruku box, Tivo or Blu Ray player to get Amazon Video in HD).  I have used Amazon SD and Netflix HD streaming on the PC with no issues, so it is not normal to have problems streaming video with this PC or the internet connection here.
The iTunes download was indicating it will take 2 hours and I let it buffer about 30 minutes on my 15Mb connection.  Over 1 gig is cached.
I can only play the movie a few minutes at a time before the movie playback and download both stop with unknown error -39 and I have to manually resume the download every few minutes and restart the movie or else  iTunes freezes completely and I have to kill it and restart it and I have also rebooted the PC.
The 24 hour rental countdown has already started since I have already attempted to start watching the movie and it doesn't look like I'm even going to have time to finish watching the movie now.  Every time iTunes crashes and I relaunch it, I now have to re-enter my iTunes password just to get into iTunes.
This has been a complete nightmare and waste of time and waste of the $4.99 rental fee.
Are there any fixes to these issues?

I waited for the download to complete and now when I play the movie there is no sound!!
The movie had sound before even though I could only play a few minutes of the movie at a time.
I have sound everywhere else on the PC including the music in iTunes.  Only the movie playback has no sound.
I have tried rebooting, reinstalling iTunes and I even installed Quicktime because an old thread about iTunes movie rentals playing with no sound suggested installing Quicktime separately, but it has not helped.
This is a very poor experience renting movies through iTunes.

  • Watching home movies on ATV?

I download all my captured video from my digital camcorder to iMovie. I do not really make DVDs but just go to iMovie and watch selected clips from the Event Library Tab on the left side.
    1. How can I watch these video clips on ATV? Do I have to transfer the clips to iTunes?
    2. Do I actually have to make a DVD project and import to iTunes?
    3. My goal is to select a bunch of movie clips and show my relatives the video on my TV versus everybody huddled around my iMac....how do I do this?
Sorry for the newbie question but thank you for any responses.

I am pretty sure you will need to create a 'project' under iMovie. However, that shouldn't be too difficult if all you really want to do is watch raw footage. Just create the project and dump all your clips into the project and that's it.
Now, to get it to Apple TV from iMovie is nice and easy, sort of. Select your project and go to the 'share' menu option. There is a selection to share, or publish, or whatever, directly to iTunes. Choose that. You're done. Apple TV can then view the home movie from your iTunes library.
Why the 'sort of'? Because publishing to iTunes does not support the full 1920x1080p that many HD TVs have these days. If you want to watch your home movies through Apple TV in 1920x1080, I do believe you're out of luck. In fact, I haven't found a good solution to watch my iMovie projects on my TV in full 1920x1080p.

  • NTFS and displaying Home Movies on TV

Can someone advise me about NTFS please?
I have a new external hard drive, Seagate 1TB Backup Plus Portable,  which I use to show home movies on my Sony TV KDL40W5500.
As far as I'm aware it only works with the drive formatted as MSDOS FAT which comes up as an option from my disc utility.
By converting the mov files to mpg, I use Wondershare Video Converter Ultimate, I can view them on my TV.
However the TV won't allow me to expand the image to full screen and I can only see them in a reduced size. The TV tells me that when I'm viewing from the USB it doesn't allow the screen options, zoom etc to be available.
I beleive that there is an alternative to the MSDOS FAT format which is called NTFS.
This doesn't come up as an alternative in the Disc Utility.
Is there a way of converting the drive to NTFS?
I should add that I can't find out if the TV supports NTFS anyway and it may only support MSDOS FAT.
Is it true that newer TVs use NTFS?
I have an iMac 3,06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo and I'm using OS X 10.8.2

I realize this is a late response, but it might help.
Try opening the movie file with iTunes. Right click on the video file, and select Open With > iTunes. If iTunes opens it and plays it, then it is ready to go for AppleTV. If it doesn't, then it is not in a format that iTunes or AppleTV support. This can be a huge time saver if you have a lot of clips.
If you have iTunes copy media to the library, then you are going to eat up a sizeable chunk of disk real estate -- as it sounds like you have a lot of movies. You can turn that option off and on in iTunes preferences. Unless you wanted it copied, I would turn that option off before importing a lot of video.
As someone else mentioned, you can use some free utilities to convert the files en masse. After they are converted, you do the same thing. Open With > iTunes. No need to call up iMovie. Quicktime Player has built-in preset for AppleTV in the Export option. There are automation scripts available to do this if you don't want to use Handbrake or other utility.
In my humble opinion, the AppleTV did not have sharing home movies in mind. At least not movies captured on non-apple devices. WDTV can play m2ts and other file formats with no conversion. I have several TB of home movies, so that was my only viable option. Besides, I don't think there is a way to play 1080p home movies through AppleTV. Nor will it play the 5.1 track from home movies, as that gets converted to stereo in the process.
    Hope this helps.

  • How can I go back the same song that was playing when I switched and watched a movie?

How can I go back to the same song and place in the song that was playing when I started watching a movie?  I have over 6k songs and now my ipod always goes back to #1 even though I may have been listening to # 321.  How do I ever get to listen to all my songs.  Yes I have it on random but if I look at the songs I have played lots of them have played 15-20 times amd many more 6-8 times.  At this point I don't feel I will ever hear the latest songs I added.
Any help will be greately appreciated.  Also is it possible to do the same on the new ipod classic 160?

One area that this appears is on Facebook where it lists the number of Recognized Devices. There are six devices which include iPad and iPhone. These items are grayed and you are unable to change. Also on my iphone it lists the computer name. This name is different from name of my computer. It's what I signed in as when I installed the Mountain Lion upgrade. I know I'm not doing a good job of explaining this. I have searched everywhere on my computer that I can think of and cannot locate where this is used. Any suggestions are appreciated.

  • Turn on home sharing won't work to watch home movies on Apple TV

I have Apple TV 3rd generation.  I transferred home movies from my MAC to my Apple TV.  I have gone to Apple TV and then Computers and clicked it and there are my home movies.  Many times however a message appears to "Turn on my Home Sharing".  So I go to my computer and File and first have to turn off and then turn on and put in password and Done.  Usually this works but I keep getting the same message and cannot see the home movies.  Unplugged Apple TV, unplugged modem and router.  Still not working.  Any suggestions?  thanks

  • Watching Home Movies in 10.5

I made some home movies on my Macbook in Tiger with iMovie 6 but found they won't play now on the same computer with Leopard. They were burned to memorex DVD-R discs if that makes any difference. Whenever I put one in the Superdrive spins for about 30 seconds and then spits it out (it never shows up on the desktop.) They play fine on my DVD player. I couldn't find the same exact problem posted (at least recently). Any help would be appreciated.

I used Memorex DVD-R's to make them, if that makes a difference. At this point, I really don't care if they play on the computer but i would like to pull the movies off the discs and back to one of my hard drives. The problem is, even with the preferences set for the computer to ignore the DVD after it's inserted, it still spits it out after about 15 seconds. Any help would be appreciated.
