Easiest/troublefree way of converting dvd's onto ipod

Can anyone recommend software that is not too expensive and easy to use to convert DVDs onto the ipod? If there is free software accessable online that anyone knows of, that would be even BETTER! Thanks.

  • Is there a way to convert DVD-VR movie into DVD-video to import in IMovie?

My husband shot 6 hours of video on a Sony DCR-DVD106E Handycam abroad, and had that burned on a dvd.
Unfortunely he shot this material with the camera in DVD-VR mode, and and now it's impossible to import and edit in IMovie. ☹ I discovered already that the camera should have been in Video-mode.
We do really need parts of the video for our work...........
Is there a way to convert the dvd so that it can be imported one way or another?

that advice is for 'standard' videoDVD (=VIDEO_TS, vobs ifos, bups, walla walla...)
    dvd_VR is a special format of dvd-corders..
I'm afraid, you have to take the long road via some converter box (Canopus, EyeTV, ...)

  • Non-protected DVD content onto iPod

Obviously with copy-protected content, we can't bring it into iTunes, but for other non-protected DVD's (training videos, my wedding video, etc), is there a simple way to compress and convert these to play on the iPod? I obviously would want it compressed to not take up space, since you shouldn't notice on the small screen...

  • Audio dropouts when converting dvd's to ipod video

Love my new 60 Gb iPod in black!
I have been able to successfully transfer several of my DVD's to my iPod using handbrake. Such movies as, "The Big Lebowski" and several episodes of "Bugs Bunny", music videos from a "Best of Blur" DVD, all transfer seamlessly (in the destination box of handbrake, I select MP4 file, then when the transfer is complete, I ammend the end of the file to m4v before dragging it over the itunes icon in the dock.).
In any event, for some reason, several other DVD's I've tried to convert using the same method (R.E.M. Roadmovie, Queen - Live at Wembley Stadium), reveal dropouts in the audio (video keeps playing without a glitch). Dropouts last for no more than a second and seem to occur between every 30 to 50 seconds. These same DVD's play flawlessly in the computer and home dvd players with no signs of dropouts. Any ideas, suggestions would be greatly appreciated concerning how I can get rid of these dastardly dropouts.
    Thanks,
    Pete

    Hi Rick,
I am extracting the material from the dvd directly using handbrake. The file that handbrake creates lands on the desktop. I then ammend the end of the filename from mp4 to m4v. Following this I click and drag the file onto the itunes icon in the dock. I can then download it to the ipod no problem. The dropouts occur no matter where I play the file. In other words, on the desktop (with QT), in the itunes library and on the pod.
I went back and looked at all the dvd's that are giving me this trouble. The culprit seems to be that the audio signal is in LPCM (linear pulse code modulation). Just for the **** of it, I tried to rip one track using handbrake changing the sampling rate of the audio to 48,000 Hz which I believe is what LPCM uses (previously I had set it at 41,000 Hz in handbrake). But no go, still has dropouts. One of these problem dvd's has a second audio option in AC3 (2ch). As a test, I ripped one song using that. Dropouts are gone. However, the audio is a director's commentary (on the music video he shot) with the music in the background, so it's not what I want.
Is there any way to convert LPCM to AC3? Or any other way to fix this dropout problem.
    Thanks,
    Pete

  • Converting dvd's to ipod format

is there a product or a process that apple supports or recommends to convert dvd movies to the right format to load onto a ipod?

To answer your original question... no, there is no product that Apple support or recommends for DVD to iPod conversion.
As mentioned frequently on this forum, there are a number of pieces of software to accomplish this task, but none of them are supported by Apple.

  • Converting DVD's to ipod

I'm sure this has been asked hundreds of times, but here it is again. How can I convert DVD's that I bought (not stealing) to my ipod. I am running a wimdows computer. I have tryed Videora, No luck! There has to be an easy way. I just want to drop in my DVD and just like a CD put it on my ipod. Am I asking for too much?

    Download DVD Shrink
    (http://www.dvdshrink.org/what.html). Then re-author
the DVD so it only rips the main movie (no menus or
extras), and convert it with Videora. It is not a
fast process, but it works well.
I tried this but only came close to success. After ripping with DVD Shrink (making sure to only select main title), 5 separate 'pieces' of the film were created in VOB file format. Although DVD Shrink did leave two complete copies of the movie in the destination folder, Videora did not recognize these because they were IFO files. Even after chnaging file type to all, Videora would still not transcode the complete movies files in IFO format.
Is there something simple I am missing?

I have QT Pro. Can I use that to convert DVD movies that I own to my iPod?
Not by itself. You would sill have to use additional utilities to rip, extract, strip, and/or preconvert before it would be ready for QT Pro to handle.
If not, is there a way to do it?
I believe "You get what you pay for" and so would probably recommend a good multipurpose commercial application over a one of the current "freebies" or multi-application approches. Here are a couple you may wan to look at or trial test:

  • Is there a way to transfer DVDs to itunes/ipod?

im trying to transfer my Michael Jackson's Visions dvd to my ipod touch. i know you can buy it in itunes, but i don't want to rebuy the movie just so it can be put on my ipod touch. i wanted to see if the imovies app would work but it seems to just be for mac.

Your i-device was not designed for unique storage of your media. It is not a backup device and media transfer was planned with you maintaining a master copy of your media on a computer which is itself properly backed up against loss. Syncing is one way, computer to device, updating the device content to the content on the computer, not updating or restoring content on a computer. The exception is iTunes Store purchases which can be transferred to a computer.
iTunes Store: Transferring purchases from your iOS device or iPod to a computer - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1848 - only purchases from iTunes Store
For transferring other items from an i-device to a computer you will have to use third party commercial software.  See this document by turingtest2: Recovering your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device - https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3991

  • Converting Dvd to 60G ipod????

which program is best to convert dvd's to the 60G ipod?? quick time pro? anybody heard of pqdvd? my friend has a 30G and he uses the pqdvd converter, he says everything seems fine and very easy to use. He did say that after he convert a movie to the ipod, it seems that if he wanted to forward to the next scene/chapter he has to use the fast forward button and keep pressing it doen to forward to the next scene. Sounds like the dvd menu is not available to select individual scenes. I am getting my 60G tomorrow and wanted to see which program works best to convert dvd's to theipod. Please help, thank you.

  • Is there a way to put DVD on my iPod 5th Generation w/out getting a ripper?

I just got a DVD and a iPod with video. How do I get the DVD on the iPod without burning a copy or ripping it or whatever.?

    Try this:
    I had the same issue, however I used this program to transfer ...avi,mpg,wma..etc...;
    http://www.videora.com/en-us/Converter/iPod/
    If the program is used the converted files will be in a folder called;
    C:\Program Files\videoraipodConverter\vodeos
I'm pasting this from the Videora site, the settings worked for me when others didn't, enjoy:
    Configuring videora converter
    0) Start Videora iPod converter.
    1) Click setup in the left nav.
    1.5) Click the profiles tab.
    2) Click new profile.
    3) Now, configure that profile:
    profile name: ipod
    in the video settings section...
    mode: MPEG-4 > CBR
    resolution: 320x240
    passes: one
bitrate: 768 kbps (384 kbps also works)
    framerate: 29.97 fps
    in the audio settings section...
    bitrate: 128 kbps
    sample rate: Input
    channels: stereo
    4) Click apply to save the profile.
    Now, you're ready to transcode.
    1) Click convert on the left nav.
    2) Click the transcode new video button.
    3) Pick your source video. Mine was an AVI from a torrent.
    4) Under quality profile, choose "ipod", the profile you created using the steps above.
    5) Click start.
Now you're ready to get the video on your ipod
    1) In iTunes, under the File menu, select add file to library. Find the transcoded one. By default, the transcoded videos pop out under the Videora install directory.
    2) Drag and drop to your ipod.
    Questions/observations:
    1) I haven't been able to get H264 anything to work. Is it broken? How much smaller than MPEG4 is it?
    2) 768 kbps video was about 400 megs/hour; 384 kbps video was about 231 megs/hour. I could readily see a difference in video quality.

Actually, it is permitted to make a copy of DVDs that you have purchased.  Do a search for a program called Handbrake.  It allows you to transfer DVD movies to formats that can be played in iTunes, and then be synced to your iPad.
    This is NOT TRUE.
You cannot break the encryption and copy the dvd. Handbrake will convert your home movies or non-encrypted dvds.  It is indee ILLEGAL to break the encryption.
