Easiest way to delete?

What is the easiest way to delete files off of Time Capsule when using Time Machine? Basically my hard drive is about half full, and I want to start erasing specific files that I no longer need backed up, but don't know the best way to go about doing that. Any help would be great thanks.

*_Deleting Items From Time Machine Backups_*
When a Time Machine Backup disk becomes full, Time Machine will begin deleting old backups to make way for newer data on it’s own. So a user does not need to do this themselves.
*Recovering Backup Space*
If, however, you have discovered that large unwanted files have been backed up, you can use the Time Machine “time travel” interface to recovered some of that space. You do NOT delete files from a Time Machine backup disk by manually mounting the disk and dragging files to the trash. You can damage or destroy your original backups by this means.
Additionally, deleting files you no longer wish to keep on your Mac does not immediately remove such files from Time Machine backups. Once data has been removed from your Macs' hard disk it will remain in backups for some time until Time Machine determines that it has "expired". That's one of its’ benefits - it retains data you may have unintentionally deleted. But eventually that data is expunged. If, however, you need to remove backed up files immediately, do this:
Launch Time Machine from the Dock icon.
Initially, you are presented with a window labeled “Today (Now)”. This window represents the state of your Mac as it exists now. +DO NOT+ delete or make changes to files while you see “Today (Now)” at the bottom of the screen. Otherwise, you will be deleting files that exist "today" - not yesterday or last week.
Click on the window just behind “Today (Now)”. This represents the last successful backup and should display the date and time of this backup at the bottom of the screen.
Now, navigate to where the unwanted file resides. If it is a file that has not been on your Mac for some time, you may need to go farther back in time to find backups to delete.
Highlight the file and click the Action menu (Gear icon) from the toolbar.
Select “Delete all backups of <this file>”.
*Be Careful:* "Delete Backup" is right under that selection. If you accidentally chose this option, ALL items in this particular backup will be deleted! If the backup is old enough to have been consolidated into daily backups, then the whole backup for that date will be deleted. If the backup is old enough to have been consolidated into weekly backups, then the whole backup for that week will be deleted.
Let us know if this resolves your issue.
Cheers!

    best way is to avoid them in the first place - have you by any chance imported an older iPhoto library into your current iPhoto library? Recently? Is the old library still available?

  • What is the easiest way to delete a line in a file?

    Hi!
    I have a file that is line oriented. I am using BufferedReader and BufferedWriter. My problem is, is how do I easily delet a line from a file? Sort of like this:
    This
    is
    not
    a
    file
    To:
    This
    is
    a
    file
    My file then has to be resaved like that.

    That was my idea what you did. Just making sure their
    was no other way. There are surely other ways to do it.
    As the file is dynamic, I have no
    Idea how many lines long it is. Thank you.But you have not just an idea but the exact size of file!
    That's just an example:import java.io.*;
    class X {
         private static final String BAD_LINE = "so bad!";
         private static final String NEW_LINE = System.getProperty("line.separator");
         public static void main(String[] args) throws IOException {
              File f = new File("filename");
              //supposing in "worst" scenario nothing will be removed
              StringBuffer sb = new StringBuffer((int)f.length());
              String line = "";
              BufferedReader in = new BufferedReader(new FileReader(f));
              while((line = in.readLine()) != null) {
                   //just filter out good lines
                   if(!line.equals(BAD_LINE)) sb.append(line + NEW_LINE);
              in.close();
              //write back the processed file:
              BufferedOutputStream out = new BufferedOutputStream(new FileOutputStream("filename"));
              byte[] bout = sb.toString().getBytes();
              out.write(bout, 0, bout.length);
              out.close();

  • Easiest way to delete Camera Roll photos which were imported by iPhoto through Photostream?

    So I have a bunch of photos on my iOS device that were properly uploaded to my Photostream.  Then, iPhoto dutifully imported them on my MacBook Pro and place them in my iPhoto library.  So now I have a bunch of photos on my iOS device that iPhoto reads as "Already Imported".  If I try to import them, I get the usual warning about a Duplicate Photo.  I don't want to import duplicate photos and choosing not to import them leaves them on my iOS device.
    So is there a more elegant way of getting them off my iOS device instead of manually deleting them?
    This is an ok idea until I have over 100 photos and the deletion process becomes a tedious tapping afair.
    Thanks!

  • Easiest way to delete TM backup and start over?

    I have one firewire drive serving as TM backup for 3 different computers.
    For my G5, I just want to erase it's entire TM backup and start over.
    Can I simply delete the MyG5 folder inside of backups completely, empty trash, and start over like that WITHOUT causing any problems for the TM backups of my other computers on the same firewire drive?
    Thank you

    Think that should work. It worked for me. I had been having all kinds of problems using 1TB TC. My set up was slightly different, but essentially I deleted the backup and started over, here is what I did:
    switched off airport and connected via patch cable(ethernet cable, checked connection speed it was 1Gbit/sec.
    accessed the disk via finder
    located the sparse disk for my computer
    selected it, hit cmmd-delete. You get a warning it will be deleted immediately.
    Hit ok
    once it is deleted, simply set up TM again on your computer.
    Kept the wired connection for the first time though.(firewire is better of course)
    My deleted back up was 94GB, it took about 3-4 minutes to delete.
    It took about 30 mins for the first backup, size was 19GB first time

    What is the easiest & quickiest way to delete apps from an iPad?

    You can delete apps directly on the iPad by pressing and holding any of the apps and after a couple of seconds or so they should start to shake. Then press the 'x' in the left corner to delete the ones that you don't want, and when you've finished deleting press the home button so as to stop the shaking (you can't delete any of the Apple built-in apps). If you don't get the 'x' on any of the apps that you've downloaded then check that Settings > General > Restrictions > Deleting Apps isn't set 'off'
    Or you can connect the iPad to your computer and select it on the left-hand side of your computer's iTunes, and then use the Apps tab on the right-hand side of iTunes to remove the apps that you no longer want on the iPad

  • Web - What is easiest way to implement User Security and User Profiles

    Hi, I am new to these forums and kind of new to Java. Sorry if this is in the wrong forum!
    Bit of background to my experience with java
    I have been playing about with java for a number of years and have created a few basic programs such as a screen shot tool that allows you to capture to default locations and look at previews first etc. I am now venturing into web related stuff. I work in IT doing systems testing and have done bits of basic development on various things.
    What I've done so far
    I am using Netbeans IDE 6.7 and MySQL 5.0
    I am trying to learn more complex java and have decided to try build a basic web / database system that basically implements adding / amending / deleting data from a MySQL database through web pages. I am now trying to implement basic user access and profiles. I have so far got the following:
    - MySQL table with user info - username / password
    - JSP page with usual login stuff
    - Servlet that validates the username and password - if correct forwards to main menu page.
    Its as simple as that - there is nothing stopping you just typing in the URL of the main menu page and going from there.
    What I want
    I am wanting to eventually get the following:
    - User authentication so that you have to logon before you can access anything else
    - User profiles that determine what each user can or can't do, restricting the pages / services / options available (i.e. normal user can't delete etc)
    - Would it need some sort of session manager to allow multiple users etc?
    I appreciate this is a fairly open question but what is the easiest way to start implementing this? Not after specific code as I would prefer to try figger things out myself, but a point in the right direction would be great. It doesn't have to be extremely secure as this is just for me at the minute.
    I have spent all day looking at things like session data / url rewriting / security settings in web.xml / bespoke servlets and am now in java overload!

    Hi everyone,
    I've now actually gone back to the tutorial that I linked to above and implemented that using form login and j_security_check.
    Agree with Saish, and although I don't know enough about the other options to give a good reason, using realms and j_security_check just seems to be a bit cluncky and messy. I would also prefer something a bit more generic, that doesn't rely on setting users in glassfish, hence why I started with my own user table.
    Anyway, I will leave it as is for now and maybe come back and try one of the other options.
    The only problem I can see now is that to add users i will need to go through all the steps of adding users in glassfish and web.xml... Is there a way to do this through a servlet or something so I can have a jsp page to add users that also creats all the other bits for it to work?
    Thanks everyone for your help

    I am using Iphoto 11 ver 9.4.3 on mac using oxs 10.8.5 i want to export calendar projects to an external hard drive. my goal is to store them in an external hard drive so it doesn't use up memory on the mac hard drive. is it possible to copy the specific projects without copying the entire library? what is the easiest way to do this? i have tried export and import but it didn't seem to work.

    What do you not understand?
    You can duplicate the iPhoto library (command - D ) and delete everything except the project and its photos from the copy and move that
    Or
    However the calendar takes very little space - it is simpy database entries - it is the photos in the calendar that take space - and for most people you would wnat to keep those photos in your library
    you can use a photo in 50 calendars and it still is only one photo in your library - as I explained calenders do not exist as such - they are simply database entries telling iPhotop how to display the calendar - they take almost no space at all

  • Easiest Way to Move Media from One External Drive to Another?

    My MacBook Pro only has a 500GB hard drive and I currently have all my movies on a 1TB external hard drive.  Everything works fine through iTunes, but now since the 1TB is maxed out, I'd like to use my new 2TB external hard drive going forward.  I understand that I need to re-route where iTunes finds the movies, but what is the easiest way to make the conversion from the 1TB to the 2TB?
    I have copied all movies from the 1TB to the 2TB.  Is the only thing left to do is re-route the location to the 2TB?  Or do I need to drag and drop all movies into iTunes (they're all already in there)?  Just didn't know if I needed to add them into iTunes again so they know to point to the 2TB drive. (sorry if I didn't explain that good!)
    Thanks in advance for your help!

    Thanks Limnos!  Really appreciate the help!
    To clarify:
    - I currently have only movies on the external 1TB drive (which iTunes points too).  The downside is that I ALWAYS have to have my external drive plugged in, in order to play on Apple TV (or view on MacBook).  I have appx. over 500GBs of movies on my external 1TB.
    - All music (appx. 200GBs) is currently on my internal hard disk, but with a 500GB internal hard drive, that's going to fill up quickly (just so you know - I already have about 125GBs of pics in iPhoto AND work in Photoshop regularly so PSDs lessen my internal 500GB space quickly).
    Eventhough I HATE having to keep an external drive plugged into my MacBook, I'm just going to have to suck it up and get used to it so I will have more space and my MacBook will run faster.
    With that in mind, I was thinking about moving my music (200GBs) onto my 2TB external drive (along with the movies).  So that would leave roughly the photos and Photoshop files (and random other things that are small in size) on my internal drive.
    I could start all over and delete all movies that are in iTunes (the application - not the folders) and then drag and drop them into iTunes from the new 2TB, but I wasn't sure all the metadata (really the cover artwork) would be attached when I did that?  Going that route really doesn't bother me since I've already copied all movies files from my 1TB to my 2TB.  Basically, I would be starting over from scratch as if the old 1TB never existed.
    Trying to run this through my mind and come up with the best/easiest way.  What I don't want to do is try and find cover artwork for the almost 300 movies I have (and all the cover artwork for the CDs I have too if I decide to keep my music on the 2TB external drive).
    Hope that helps and makes sense?  Thanks again!

  • What's the easiest way to select all my files from all the folders on a hard drive and place into one folder?

    Hi there,
    I have about 30,000 images all in hundreds of folders. I'm wondering what the easiest way to get them all into one folder so I can select and convert them all from .psd, .tiff, etc all to jpg. The reason I'm doing this is because the folder structure is such a mess, that I'm just going to import them all into aperture to sort everything. But the .tiffs and .psds are 100 mb each so I want to scale them to jpgs that are only 4 or 5 mb before I even think about importing them into aperture.
    I tried doing a search for "kind is image" and it shows them all but a ton of them are renamed the same thing so when I try to select all and move into one folder it tells me I can skip that one or stop copying.
    Any thoughts or ideas on this?
    Thanks,
    Caleb

    Hi russelldav,
    one note on your data handling:
    When  each of the 50 participants send the same 60 "words" you don't need 3000 global variables to store them!
    You can reorganize those data into a cluster for each participant, and using an array of cluster to keep all the data in one "block".
    You can initialize this array at the start of the program for the max number of participants, no need to (dynamically) add or delete elements from this array...
    Edited:
    When all "words" have the same representation (I16 ?) you can make a 2D array instead of an array of cluster...

  • JSP, BC4J, Row Tag: what is the best way to delete multiple rows?

    Hi all.
    I have a JSP Edit page with three datasources on it. The tables these VO's represent (A, B and C) have a Parent --> Child (1:1 between A and B) relationship and then another Parent --> Child (1:n between B and C) relationship. So the user retrieves one row for Table A, 1 matching row for table B and then between 0 and 6 matching rows for Table C (there cannot be more than 6 because the user can only add these rows from a finite list).
    In my EditSubmit page, I want to perform a RowTag Update action on Tables A and B and they both work no problem. They can't update any rows from Table C but they can add or delete from the list of 0 - 6 rows (the UI is actually a list of 6 checkboxes that they can turn on or off). I figure that the easiest way to handle this rather than keep a list of original values and compare them is simply to delete all existing rows and then add any that the user checked.
    This is causing a problem. I have added a hidden field to the form that picks up the RowKey for each existing row. I can get these RowKeys in the Submit page but cannot find a way of using them with the Delete Row Tag.
    In the end, the only way I could get it to work was the following code (which I stole from the RowTag.java file in jbohtmlsrc.zip):
    if (stakeMailRowKeys != null) {
    for (int counter = 0; counter < stakeMailRowKeys.length; counter++) {
    Key stakeMailKey = new Key(stakeMailRowKeys[counter], stakeMailingRS.getViewObject().getKeyAttributeDefs());
    stakeMailRows = stakeMailingRS.findByKey(stakeMailKey,1);
    stakeMailingRow = stakeMailRows[0];
    // Tell the row to delete itself from the database
    stakeMailingRow.remove();Is there a simpler way to do this (I figure there probably is)? I have another problem with updating the constrained View Objects but I will leave that out of this thread for now.
    TIA,
    Simon

    I don't know if this will help you, but this is what I do:
    I separate the logic into a delete.jsp page. If you can create a View Object that will represent the rows you want to delete and append a where clause to select only the rows you want to delete. Then loop through the view deleting each row. Lets just say you have department and employee tables. and you want to delete employees within a given department. Create a view object that brings back all employees.
    In your delete.jsp find out the department no. by request.getParameter("dept_id");
    then append this to the where clause of your view Object and execute the query:
    vo.setWhereClause(request.getParameter("dept_id");
    vo.executeQuery;
    now loop through and remove the rows:
    while(vo.next){
    vo.getCurrentRow().remove();
    and commit or post changes accordingly.
    There are many ways of doing this action. The easiest way I have found is to create the ViewObjects based on what actions you want to take on them. Make bc4j work for you.
