Easiest way to remove digital debris?

Over the past 4 or 5 years, I've been upgrading and upgrading not only my OS but my software as well. In that time I've also deleted many applications I didn't end up using. I can tell that my computer doesn't run as smoothly and flawlessly as it used to; and I'm beginning to see unique problems with Safari and Flash.
I'm looking to do a fresh reinstall of Snow Leopard, and I want to know what the easiest way will be for me to retain all of the things on my computer - Applications, Passwords, Preferences, Pics, Fonts, etc... while clearing out all of the old unused files, and miscellaneous junk that's collected over the years.

I think that Templeton was suggesting to restore from Time Machine just the files you want - not everything. His suggestion sounds like a good one to me.
But before doing that, have you tried logging in to a different user account to see if the problems persist there? The results of that test will tell you if reinstalling is a good idea or not.

To remove a line from a text file, the easiest way is to read it in one line at a time and write out all lines except the one you want to remove to a new version of the file. Likewise, to insert a line, you read the file one line at a time and write the lines to a new version, inserting the new line at its correct spot.

Easiest way to remove background from an image

I am using Adobe Photoshop CS3 Extended and I am working on trying to select a portion of a photo to use as a watermark. The photo is of a racecar in the foreground and I want to exclude the background (which is the road). Of the selection tools I really like the Magnetic Lasso tool to get in close on the objects edges but sometimes it selects areas I don't want. Does anyone know how to adjust the magnetic lasso tool once you have it all the way around an object? I've also tried the Magic Wand tool but found I couldn't drag it into a new document so that didn't work. I just need to find the easiest way to accomplish this task. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance for your help!

What is the easiest way to remove the fast foward button from the play bar?

Everytime a user clicks on the fast foward (not the forward) it screws up the audio. It doesnt really serve an purpose in my CBT so I would like to just remove it. Is there an easy way?

you don't indicate what version you're using, but in Cp5.5 (and I presume it's similar in Cp6), go to Project > Skin Editor, then uncheck the buttons you don't want.

Easiest way to remove live sound

When I edit projects I rarely use the "live" sound recorded by the camcorder. In Premiere Elements I could just select a clip in the timeline and delete the audio via right mouse click and select. In CS5 I seem to have to unlink the clip from its audio, then select the audio portion only and delete that.
Is there some quick way to drop a clip into the timeline without it's audio track, or is there a quicker way of deleting the audio for a clip other than unlink and clear?

Craig's suggestions are probably all the best for accomplishing what you want, but I'll offer one more suggestion for the fun of it...
Personally, I like to add both the video and audio portions of a clip into a sequence, because even though I may be pretty sure that I won't use the audio, I like having the option. Instead of fussing with turning off tracks and so on, I simply hold down the Alt key and select just the audio portion of a sequence clip (or just video, if you want the audio) and right-click and toggle the Enable option. This leaves that portion of the clip in the timeline, linked to the other portion, but effectively "mutes" it. This way, if I decide I want the audio (or video) later, I just have to reverse the process, and I don't have to turn off everything in a track by muting it, so I can be selective of the clips that pass through to output.
Again, this is a more specialized function, but might be helpful at times.

If you wish to remove any line inside of a text file, you're going to have to use random access. The documentation for the class is located here:

If you wish to append to a text file, you can use FileWriter. If you pass a boolean of value true as the second argument to the constructor, it will append to the file.

What's the easiest way to back up and restore my hard drive to a new HD

I'm going to upgrade my hard drive to a larger one on my MacBook. I have an external backup drive. What is the easiest way to save all my data (documents, emails, etc) and applications and restore them to the new hard drive in my MacBook? I have Leopard OS.
I've read on the forum everything from using Time Machine to the Disk Utility. I have been backing up everything to my external HD using Time Machine.
Can you point me to a step by step process.

I don't use TM, so here's my method that I've used many times for the same thing you are doing.
How to Clone Using Restore Option of Disk Utility
1. Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
2. Select the backup or destination volume from the left side list.
3. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (journaled, if available) and click on the Erase button. This step can be skipped if the destination has already been freshly erased.
4. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
5. Select the backup or destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
6. Select the startup or source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
7. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Now, boot from the clone to be sure it works correctly by opening Startup Disk, selecting the external volume, then clicking the Restart button. If all is well the computer will boot from the external drive. Now shut down the computer and disconnect the external drive. Disconnect the AC adapter and remove the battery. Install the new hard drive. Once you've completed the installation connect the external drive and restart the computer.
Now do the following:
Extended Hard Drive Preparation
1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger or Leopard.)
2. After DU loads select your new hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. SMART info will not be reported on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
3. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID (only required for Intel Macs) then click on the OK button. Set the number of partitions from the dropdown menu (use 1 partition unless you wish to make more.) Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the volume(s) mount on the Desktop.
4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
6. Click on the Erase button. The format process will take 30 minutes to an hour or more depending upon the drive size.
Steps 4-6 are optional but recommended for a drive that has never been formatted before, if the format type is not Mac OS Extended, if the partition scheme has been changed, or if a different operating system (not OS X) has been installed on the drive.
After formatting is completed use DU to clone the external drive's system back to the new internal drive. The external drive becomes the Source and the internal drive will be the Destination.

Remove Digits from Layer Comp to Files Export

Hello,
Is there a quick way to remove the beginning of the string when running the Layer Comps to Files script? For example if the layer comp is named picture-of-tree, the exported files have _00001_picture-of-tree. I just need the resulting file name to be what is exactly in the layer comp text title: picture-of-tree.
Any info would be great.

Just removing line 189 "fileNameBody += "_" + zeroSuppress(compsIndex, 4);" will only remove the 4 digit numbers and it’s leading underscore. Your result might be caused by an empty file name prefix.
If you would like to have the numbering start at 01 with two digits only - you simply have to change the zeroSuppress function call:
fileNameBody += "-" + zeroSuppress(compsIndex+1, 2);
The first parameter "compsIndex+1" will force to start with 1 instead of 0.
The second parameter "2" does control the number of digits returned by the function.

In general you are not allowed to replace parts of the packages or subpackages of "java", "javax" or "sun" or add or remove classes to resp. from them - you accepted this terms when you had downloaded the JDK - sure, it is possible, but you are not allowed to do so - it is illegal.

best way is to avoid them in the first place - have you by any chance imported an older iPhoto library into your current iPhoto library? Recently? Is the old library still available?

My fastest workflow for this is to do the following:
1. Turn on quick preview mode by pressing "P"
2. Use the arrow keys on the keyboard to move to the next or previous image
3. Use the number keys (1-5) to choose how many stars the image gets - zero removes the ranking, and I think 9 "rejects" the version.

What is the easiest way to delete files off of Time Capsule when using Time Machine? Basically my hard drive is about half full, and I want to start erasing specific files that I no longer need backed up, but don't know the best way to go about doing that. Any help would be great thanks.

When a Time Machine Backup disk becomes full, Time Machine will begin deleting old backups to make way for newer data on it’s own. So a user does not need to do this themselves.
*Recovering Backup Space*
If, however, you have discovered that large unwanted files have been backed up, you can use the Time Machine “time travel” interface to recovered some of that space. You do NOT delete files from a Time Machine backup disk by manually mounting the disk and dragging files to the trash. You can damage or destroy your original backups by this means.
Additionally, deleting files you no longer wish to keep on your Mac does not immediately remove such files from Time Machine backups. Once data has been removed from your Macs' hard disk it will remain in backups for some time until Time Machine determines that it has "expired". That's one of its’ benefits - it retains data you may have unintentionally deleted. But eventually that data is expunged. If, however, you need to remove backed up files immediately, do this:
Launch Time Machine from the Dock icon.
Initially, you are presented with a window labeled “Today (Now)”. This window represents the state of your Mac as it exists now. +DO NOT+ delete or make changes to files while you see “Today (Now)” at the bottom of the screen. Otherwise, you will be deleting files that exist "today" - not yesterday or last week.
Click on the window just behind “Today (Now)”. This represents the last successful backup and should display the date and time of this backup at the bottom of the screen.
Now, navigate to where the unwanted file resides. If it is a file that has not been on your Mac for some time, you may need to go farther back in time to find backups to delete.
Highlight the file and click the Action menu (Gear icon) from the toolbar.
Select “Delete all backups of <this file>”.
*Be Careful:* "Delete Backup" is right under that selection. If you accidentally chose this option, ALL items in this particular backup will be deleted! If the backup is old enough to have been consolidated into daily backups, then the whole backup for that date will be deleted. If the backup is old enough to have been consolidated into weekly backups, then the whole backup for that week will be deleted.

Adding a wireless client to your network
You can provide access to your network for clients by adding them to the client list in AirPort Utility. You can provide access for as long as the client is in the list, or you can provide 24 hours of access, after which the client will no longer have access to your network.
When you provide access to your wireless network, the client does not need to enter the network password if you have set one up.
Allowing client access to your network:
Open AirPort Utility, located in the Utilities folder in the Applications folder on a computer using Mac OS X, and in Start > All Programs > AirPort on a computer using Windows.
Select the device you’re setting up, and then click Manual Setup. Enter the password if necessary.
Choose “Add a client” from the Base Station menu, and then type a name for the wireless client.
Select “One day access only” if you want to provide only one day of access to your network. If you don’t select this option, the client will have access to your network until you remove the client’s name from the list.
To remove the client, click Advanced in the AirPort Utility toolbar, click Accounts, select the name of the client, and then click Delete .
That would save having to reconfigure the other machines on the network etc.
What I'm not sure about is whether this will work with the Express as well.
