Easily Increase HD Free Space on Laptop

Easily Increase HD Free Space on Laptop
I recently acquired a G3 400MHz FW Pismo laptop. It has the original 10GB HD installed. The laptop had Tiger installed along with other numerous applications, leaving only 1.05 GB free. I was thinking about installing some more applications, but it's somewhat dangerous to get below a GB of free space.
I discovered the freeware Monolingual, a program for removing unnecessary language resources from Mac OS X, in order to reclaim several hundred megabytes of disk space. It requires at least Mac OS X 10.3.9 (Panther) and also works on Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger). http://monolingual.sourceforge.net/
I tried it out, & it deleted almost 1.5GB of drive space. Now I have 2.5GB free.
Cheers, Tom

jpl:
Here is what I foundMac OS X Remove Localized Files: Mac OS X and many Mac OS X applications include files that allow them to be used by people who speak different languages. Even if you choose not to install "extra" languages, your Mac usually has several alternate languages available. And every time you install or update an application, you get more of them. For example, the iTunes 4.0 installer includes Chinese (both Taiwan and mainland), Danish, Dutch, English, Finnish, French, German, Italian, Korean, Japanese, Norwegian, Portuguese, Spanish, and Swedish versions.
If you don't speak some of those languages, you'll never use those files (and never miss them), so you can safely remove them and save disk space. There are other applications that can do this, but to be really useful you'll need to run them again every time you install a new application or update Mac OS X.
These files can take more space than you might guess. The first time I ran this job on my Mac, I saved 322MB of files I was never going to use anyway. With that space I could import a half-dozen of my CDs into iTunes and not be using any more disk space than when I started.
Removing localized files can take a while, mostly taken up in looking for the files, and will take longer on larger drives. For reference it akes about 10-12 minutes on a drive with about 22GB used. This job requires that you configure it, so that you can tell it which languages you want to remove. When I installed OS X I had deselected the option for Foreign Language Translations, and thought I didn't have them. According to this, I still have some, with more added with each installation. Very interesting.
Thanks for suggesting that. I looked in the usual place for the help menu, but since Macaroni is installed in System Preferences it does not run like a regular application. I found a help button at the bottom of the window.
Thanks.

  • Deleteing files doesnt increase the free space on my harddisc

My hard disc has only 766 MB free space. When I´m deleteing files I don´t get more free space.
I have deleted over 1 GB today by putting files into the trash can and then empyting it, but it is still only the 766 MBs of free space.
    Help?

I dont understand the word "sparse". What is this file? Can i delete it?
This file contains your encrypted home folder. As long as you have FileVault turned on, don't delete it.
I have FileVault enabled but when I try to disable it it says that there is not enough free disk space.

  • Deleted Data, no increase in free space......

We have deleted in excess of 1.2M rows of data from 3 tables within the database, but have seen no real increase in the amount of freespace in the datafiles, what else do i need to do or missing,,,,
    TY, newbie, WAR.

    Hi,
Oracle datafiles cannot release the extents acquired automatically when data is deleted. Any new data added is always appended by acquiring new extents. Truncation is the only way of reducing the datafile size. However, if all data cannot be deleted, then truncation cannot be used. An idea would be to delete the reqd number of records, then use export utility to take a dump of the remaining data, then truncate the table, and then import the data back into the table. (during import, you should specify the option 'Ignore error due to object existence...' etc as 'yes', so that the data will be appended to the empty table.)

  • IDisk Utility re Detele Free Space

    HI,
I try to create more space on my hard drive. I am emptying the trash that contained 260 000 files securely and launched the iDisk to clean free space on the selected Hard Drive, But it appear that instead of creating space it takes lots of space.
I started the delete free space with 84GB available... 4 hours later I had 16.6GB available. What is due to? How comes deleting free space can minimize the available space on the Hard drive. Of course I had interrupted the process and weirdly it came back to the original available space of 84GB...strange... Any idea will help me a lot.
Thank you to all who will contribute.

  • Partition drop  not increasing free space in dba_free_spaces

    I am Using Oracle 11.2.0.3.
I had a script that droped partitions for a table which should have dropped nearly 30 gb of data. We have data and index tablespace.
Query of dba_free_space showed no change on data tablespace. However, index tablespace showed increase in free space.
    select  sum(bytes / (1024 * 1024 * 1024)) "Size (GB)"  from dba_free_space where tablespace_name ='&tbs_name'I am using following command to drop partition
    ALTER TABLE table_name
    DROP PARTITION "partition_name"
UPDATE GLOBAL INDEXES;What should be done to increase free space shown for tablespace after partition drop ?

  • Using Photoshop Elements 12 on my MacBook Pro laptop, when saving a file I have been working on I get the following message although there is at least 50GB free space on the hard drive:  Could not save because the disk is full.

I have been making Christmas Cards, working in layers and then flattening the image.  However, I am unable to save the final image as I get the following message:  Could not save because the disk is full.  Looking at the system report for my laptop shows there is 52GB of free space.

Well, running on a 2006 model.  I did not have a startup disc.  Initially, it booted up on original software in 2006.  Since then, I've upgraded to 10.6 via a box set.  And, since then I think I popped it up to lion.
All I have on a disc is snow leopard.  And, I can't get farther than the setup screen due to hard drive.  I'm taking to a apple authorized repair store right now.  We'll see what they tell me .  I'm just going to weigh the cost of repair vs. buying new.
Another bad, stupid thing is I had no means of backing up my stuff.  So, I might have lost things like music, vids, etc.  we'll see if they can recover.  If the cost is too much for repair I might just forget it and start over with a new system.  Just not sure at this point.

  • Why doesn't free space increase when I delete songs?

I have a 3rd gen iPod Nano that I have had for 4+ years. I had a problem with it last week - I was no longer able to copy songs to it, so I did a restore and then reloaded a bunch of songs. This worked fine. Now what I find, though, is that when I delete songs, the amount of free space available does not increase (no matter how many I delete). Does anyone have any idea what's causing this? Thanks.

So you manually manage the iPod's contents then?  Are you deleting the tracks from the iPod itself or from your actual iTunes library?
What happens if you do a hard reset the iPod after removing the content?  Do the free space reappear then?

  • Losing Z10 Storage Capacity / Free Space not increasing after file deletion in BB Link?

If anyone has tried adding and removing items to the z10 via blackberry link and noticed that once items are deleted the space that should be freed up completely disappears from BB link.... don't panic. I checked on my phone and the storage space is still free 11.4GB But on BB Link I now only show 3.9GB free space so I cannot add all the files that I want to. I restarted the phone. No change. I restarted BB Link and it now shows all my free space - obviously just a minor bug.

I had read something about this else where so I thought i'd share my findings as it looks like I'm not the only one and someone may have a panic attack.
I uploaded around 7gb of mp3 data that i later deleted. My free space stayed at 3.9gb and did not increase but my overall space went down to around 4gb showing 3 photos and a movie trailer as my only stored items.

  • Increasing free space on drive C

My computer was really low on free space on drive C. It seemed as if Adobe programs were eating up space on drive C. I managed to increase the free disk space from 2.7 GB to 8 GB.
    (Try at your own risk...)
    Windows XP
    1. Delete picture folders from C:\Documents and Settings\Main Administrator\Application Data\Adobe\Bridge CS4\Cache
Bridge apperantly saves some files automatically. I had some old photos there that I'd already backed up.
    2. Delete C:\Documents and Settings\(user name)\Application Data\Adobe\CameraRaw\Cache
    3. In premiere pro cs4: Edit>Preferences>Media change the location of Media Cache Files and Media Cache Database from drive c to any other drive.

    You are playing with fire!
The proper way to control and purge these caches can be found as follows in Bridge:
    Edit=>Preferences=>Cache
provides facilties to set the location of the Bridge cache, control its maximum size, to compact the cache, and to purge the Bridge cache.
    Edit=>Camera Raw=>Camera Raw Cache
provides facilities to set the location of the Camera Raw cache, control its maximum size, and to purge the Camera Raw cache.
    Don't go willy-nilly deleting files!

  • Increase free space in MacBook Air

How do I increase free space on flash drive for Air.  My free space decreasing and "other" increasing size!

Freeing Up Space on The Hard Drive
      1. See Lion/Mountain Lion's Storage Display.
      2. You can remove data from your Home folder except for the /Home/Library/ folder.
      3. Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on freeing up space on your hard drive.
      4. Also see Freeing space on your Mac OS X startup disk.
      5. See Where did my Disk Space go?.
      6. See The Storage Display.
You must Empty the Trash in order to recover the space they occupied on the hard drive.
You should consider replacing the drive with a larger one. Check out OWC for drives, tutorials, and toolkits.
Try using OmniDiskSweeper 1.8 or GrandPerspective to search your drive for large files and where they are located.

  • Increase free space in data files

    Hello All,
We are running netweaver 04s on sql server. In our EPR landscape, we are having message no free space in file in db02 transaction. It reports error when we execute DB02 and does not allows or shows us the DBCC check options. Strangely, this message appears even if the auto grow option in data files is on.
Could you please let me know what would be the impact if I increase the datafiles initial size?
    Thanks,
    Gaurav

    Hello Jeff,
    Thanks for the response!
The odd thing out is that, we do have autogrowth on, and I am sure the data file size is getting increased on all the datafiles, otherwise the database would have struck up but the information that we get on DB02 transaction is wrong or the correct information is not bieng reflected.
Also, I am not able to run the DBCC checks via dbacockpit!
    Please share your thoughts!
    Thanks,
    Gaurav

  • Mobile Time Machine apparently increases free space

After setting up Fusion Drive and restored OS and files, my MBP had 200GB of free space.
Few days later, 230GB of free space in a Finder window.
A week later, 300GB of free space, despite I did not delete fles that much.
I checked "About This Mac">"Storage" for a week, and found that "Other" was decreasing (I did not delete much, again), and "Backups" was increasing.
It is as if files which must be categoraized "other" are categoraized "Backups", and since the amount of "Backups" is not counted in Finder, apparently I had more and more free space.
Have anyone experienced such strange case? I disabled mobile time Machine, fearing "other" files would be deleted as "backups" files would be.

Actually, I can shorten this down to just:
Mount TimeMachineBackup disk, it reports ~95GB free.
Repair it, it reports 800+GB free
    Unmount it
Remount it, it again reports ~95GB free.
    Rinse. Repeat.
