Easy access to Laptop Fan vent for cleaning

See the long running thread Fan control problems here:http://community.acer.com/t5/Notebooks-Netbooks/Fan-Control-Problems-With-5750G-And-similar-machines/td-p/12555/page/34 Acer should design the laptop with a way to remove the air vents from the outside without the need to take the laptop apart which only technicians can do. Several possible methods could be considered:1 Screws securing a plastic cover - fiddly and probalby more expensive to manufacture2 Latch or some sort of pull tab as found on remove controls for the batteries - my preference3 Lever action such as used on the battery cell Dust accumulation is an inevitable problem for laptops/ultrabooks and a cause or overheating. No other manufacturer offers a user friendly method of checking & cleaning the vents. Would like to see Acer offer this innovation.thanks Bilbo

I'm glad to see you're doing something about it with the Dust Defender idea. BUT...
"As I described above, there is great reluctance to provide removable venting or similar access to the internals of our laptops, because of obvious safety and damage issues to some users who may use it inappropriately.  " This is not a good excuse. I can also access the internals of my computer, all I need is a screwdriver. I think it's quite established by now into people's minds that accessing the internals of a laptop breaks the warranty and that if you do it then you do it on your own risk. Whoever opens their laptop knows what they're getting into and those who don't are learning a good lesson (and for that you have legal defenses). And I don't see why you have safety concerns. Can't a person get electrocuted or burn something inside their computer if they open it and they're not smart enough to unplug it from the power outlet? (just an example). Yet you still sell laptops which are easily dissassembled with a screwdriver. You have the option to do something revolutionary by creating a cooling system which can be easily removed and cleaned. Some people will indeed do it themselves as they may have the knowledge to do it and they might not care about the warranty (or their laptops are out of warranty). Others will take the computer to a service, but at least it will make it easier for them to clean it. "Now about your specific model, the Aspire 5755G. Quite honestly that model is WELL beyond it's warrantied life span.  The last of those models remaining under warranty expired before the end of 2012.  There simply isn't going to be an effort put into a revision of the fan speed of a model that is that far along in it's realistic life span. " Well somebody did it (somebody from Acer) for the 5750 G and 5755G model (but it didn't work on 5755G) and then a user of this community did it for the 5755G model. What you're saying sounds to me like "Well, you DID pay us for a product but that was a long time ago and we don't really care that much about it after a while, or about you". Not to mention that I bought the laptop in 2013, so it wasn't used more than 2.5 years, and yet I had problems with it from the beginning. So, if that guy could make that software (well, not on his own) then it could be done. It's called good cutomer service, especially when it doesn't take millions in research to do it (and frankly, this should not have been an issue in the first place, as it is possible to change fan speed in other laptops).  I don't need any excuses or explanations from you. My only point is that you need to work on both your customer support and your products. I don't want to detract the discussion from it's main point so I'm not going to write any more messages.

  • Where to find the best application for cleaning out my MacBook Air with OS X 10.7.5? I've been using MacKeeper but believe it's slowing down my laptop considerable.

where to find the best application for cleaning out my MacBook Air with OS X 10.7.5? I've been using MacKeeper but believe it's slowing down my laptop considerable. Thank you.

    How to maintain a Mac
    1. Make redundant backups, keeping at least one off site at all times. One backup is not enough. Don’t back up your backups; make them independent of each other. Don’t rely completely on any single backup method, such as Time Machine. If you get an indication that a backup has failed, don't ignore it.
    2. Keep your software up to date. In the Software Update preference pane, you can configure automatic notifications of updates to OS X and other Mac App Store products. Some third-party applications from other sources have a similar feature, if you don’t mind letting them phone home. Otherwise you have to check yourself on a regular basis. This is especially important for complex software that modifies the operating system, such as device drivers. Before installing any Apple update, you must check that all such modifications that you use are compatible.
    3. Don't install crapware, such as “themes,” "haxies," “add-ons,” “toolbars,” “enhancers," “optimizers,” “accelerators,” "boosters," “extenders,” “cleaners,” "doctors," "tune-ups," “defragmenters,” “firewalls,” "barriers," “guardians,” “defenders,” “protectors,” most “plugins,” commercial "virus scanners,” "disk tools," or "utilities." With very few exceptions, this stuff is useless, or worse than useless. Above all, avoid any software that purports to change the look and feel of the user interface.
The more actively promoted the product, the more likely it is to be garbage. The most extreme example is the “MacKeeper” scam.
As a rule, the only software you should install is that which directly enables you to do the things you use a computer for — such as creating, communicating, and playing — and does not modify the way other software works. Use your computer; don't fuss with it.
Safari extensions, and perhaps the equivalent for other web browsers, are a partial exception to the above rule. Most are safe, and they're easy to get rid of if they don't work. Some may cause the browser to crash or otherwise malfunction.  Some are malicious. Use with caution, and install only well-known extensions from relatively trustworthy sources, such as the Safari Extensions Gallery.
Never install any third-party software unless you know how to uninstall it. Otherwise you may create problems that are very hard to solve.
    4. Beware of trojans. A trojan is malicious software (“malware”) that the user is duped into installing voluntarily. Such attacks were rare on the Mac platform until sometime in 2011, but are now increasingly common, and increasingly dangerous.
There is some built-in protection against downloading malware, but you can’t rely on it — the attackers are always at least one day ahead of the defense. You can’t rely on third-party protection either. What you can rely on is common-sense awareness — not paranoia, which only makes you more vulnerable.
Never install software from an untrustworthy or unknown source. If in doubt, do some research. Any website that prompts you to install a “codec” or “plugin” that comes from the same site, or an unknown site, is untrustworthy. Software with a corporate brand, such as Adobe Flash Player, must be acquired directly from the developer. No intermediary is acceptable, and don’t trust links unless you know how to parse them. Any file that is automatically downloaded from a web page without your having requested it should go straight into the Trash. A website that claims you have a “virus,” or that anything else is wrong with your computer, is rogue.
In OS X 10.7.5 or later, downloaded applications and Installer packages that have not been digitally signed by a developer registered with Apple are blocked from loading by default. The block can be overridden, but think carefully before you do so.
Because of recurring security issues in Java, it’s best to disable it in your web browsers, if it’s installed. Few websites have Java content nowadays, so you won’t be missing much. This action is mandatory if you’re running any version of OS X older than 10.6.8 with the latest Java update. Note: Java has nothing to do with JavaScript, despite the similar names. Don't install Java unless you're sure you need it. Most people don't.
    5. Don't fill up your boot volume. A common mistake is adding more and more large files to your home folder until you start to get warnings that you're out of space, which may be followed in short order by a boot failure. This is more prone to happen on the newer Macs that come with an internal SSD instead of the traditional hard drive. The drive can be very nearly full before you become aware of the problem. While it's not true that you should or must keep any particular percentage of space free, you should monitor your storage consumption and make sure you're not in immediate danger of using it up. According to Apple documentation, you need at least 9 GB of free space on the startup volume for normal operation.
If storage space is running low, use a tool such as the free application OmniDiskSweeper to explore your volume and find out what's taking up the most space. Move rarely-used large files to secondary storage.
    6. Relax, don’t do it. Besides the above, no routine maintenance is necessary or beneficial for the vast majority of users; specifically not “cleaning caches,” “zapping the PRAM,” "resetting the SMC," “rebuilding the directory,” "defragmenting the drive," “running periodic scripts,” “dumping logs,” "deleting temp files," “scanning for viruses,” "purging memory," "checking for bad blocks," "testing the hardware," or “repairing permissions.” Such measures are either completely pointless or are useful only for solving problems, not for prevention.
The very height of futility is running an expensive third-party application called “Disk Warrior” when nothing is wrong, or even when something is wrong and you have backups, which you must have. Disk Warrior is a data-salvage tool, not a maintenance tool, and you will never need it if your backups are adequate. Don’t waste money on it or anything like it.

No, I do not mean just the music.  Copying just the media/music files or the media folder creates problems.

  • Transaction code for user menu, sap easy access

    Hi system experts!
Does anybody know which transaction causes the user-specific menu within "SAP easy access" (the welcome screen after login, like /n does) ?
I need it to be called from a portal iView, so that the usual sapgui-like screen with the user's menu appears in a portal screen, both for SAPGUI for windows and http.
Trx. S000 or SESSION_MANAGER does not cause the user-specific menu when called from the portal. These work least of all for call via ITS.
    thanks
    Andreas

    hi ,
The transaction code is SE41.. This is for creating Menus and tool bars.
you can also try SMEN it will call the user menu as you described in your post.

    Krishna

Add them as a bookmark in the Safari web browser. You can sync bookmarks between your computer and iPad too using iTunes or iCloud.

  • How do I save a site like Dictionary to my desktop for easy access. I could do it with Windows explorer but with firefox , I'm lost

Not accustom to this program and I'm trying to apply and save a site to my desktop. ( dictionary ) for easy access.

To create a shortcut on the desktop, you can drag-and-drop the "site identity" icon (it's either a globe or a padlock that appears to the left of the URL on the address bar).
If that's inconvenient (for example, if you always use Firefox maximized), there might be an extension which lets you create the shortcut from inside Firefox. If you want to search for one, you can start here: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/

You can bookmark all those tabs and place them in a folder.
    * "Bookmark This Page" and "Bookmark All Tabs" no longer show in the Bookmarks menu unless you open the Bookmarks menu via the keyboard (Alt + B).
    * "Bookmark All Tabs" can be accessed via the right-click context menu of a tab on the tab bar.

Open Apple Mail, and open Preferences (under Mail in the Menu Bar).  On the General tab, check the "Default Email Reader" and set it to Mail (6.6).

Use the trackpad to scroll, thats what it was designed for. The scroll bars automatically disappear when not being used and will appear if you scroll up or down using the trackpad.
This is a user-to-user forum and most people will post on here if they have problems. You very rarely get people posting to say there update went smooth. The fact is the vast majority of Mountain Lion users will not be experiencing any major problems with the OS, or maybe with apps which are not compatible, but thats hardly Apple's fault if developers don't update their apps.

I am currently running OS X v10.6 SL, and am thinking about moving to OS X ML.  I have several folders on my display for easy access.  If I move to ML will I lose the folders?

Do you mean that you have folders on your desktop?
No, you should not lose those if you upgrade your OS; however, it is recommended that you do make a complete backup of all your files before doing so just in case. I'd suggest a Time Machine backup or a bootable clone so you can restore if necessary.
FWIW, you could also store your folders in your Documents folder and drag their icons to your dock for easy access.

  • With iOS 7.0.2 I lost many apps from my screen.  They are in the Apps store under "updates."  I can open them but can't get them back onto the desktop for easy access.

How can I get my Apps back on my iPhone screen?  Many disappeared when I updated to i0S 7.0.2.  I can open them from the Apps store where they are listed in Updates.  But I can't get them back on my desktop for easy access.

Try restoring the iPhone from backup.
