Easy keyboard switching

Hi, I have arch with lxde, and I am trying to switch to dvorak keyboard.
Is there a simple easy way of switching keyboard layout, that does not require manually editing xorg files and restarting the x server?
I was hoping I could use the "Keyboard layout swicher" in the lxpanel, but I don't know how to add (or where I should) a new keyboard layout with dvorak variant.
Thanks to anyone who has some advice for me.
PS: Sorry if my English is bad, I try the best I can.

I use a bash script called by a launcher on my panel:
if setxkbmap -query |grep -q "us$"
then
setxkbmap carpalx
else
setxkbmap us
fi
I also have some aliases:
alias asdf='setxkbmap carpalx'
alias dstn='setxkbmap us'
(asdf are left hand home keys in us layout, dstn are left hand home keys in carpalx layout)
Of course, now I've fully switched to carpalx I really need to make it the default.
OT> Have you looked into the Colemak layout?  It is considered to be the best of the 'established' alternatives (for english anyway) among the kb optimizing community:

  • Monitor & Keyboard switcher

    Hi,
Please could someone help me to find a compatible monitor and keyboard switcher to use it as Sun consoles (two SunFire 280R)... The main requirement is that don't cause any problem if the consoles are running XWindows.
    Regards,
    Miguel

To be honest I don't know what the Disk Utility may have done, it took a couple of runs before it ran without reporting any issues.
I did also run a trial download of Stellar Phoenix Mac Data Recovery on the drive first but it crashes after reading the drive structure.  Their unlicensed trial version can't fix anything I was just thinking it may say what was wrong at the time.  BTW, contacting Stellar support I found out that drives used for Time Machine are "not supported" - and it lets you know this by crashing, totally non-impressive.
The drive is normal 2TB spinning media (Seagate STAY2000102) not SSD.  Running the Seagate tool on the drive seems to have corrected the issue so I view this problem as resolved and it was certainly a better option than re-formatting the drive - which seems to be the most common answer for this type of issue from what I have found.

  • Overclocking an MSI H55M-E33 with easy OC switch.

    Hi everyone,
Im new to overclocking, tempted to overclock through the easy oc switch on the mainboard. Has anyone tried it out? how did it go?, but more importantly do i need to change setting from the bios or does it change itself automaticaly after the switches are on?, also do i need to turn off intel's turbo boost before i turn the switches on?, an explanation would be much appreciated since ive never done this before, thanks guys
    my setup:
    Mainboard: MSI H55M-E33
    Case: Coolmaster centurion 5
    CPU: I5 760
    Ram: 8gig corsair xms3 classic
    Cpu cooler: Noctua nh-d14
    Case cooler: Noctua nf-p12
Graphics:  MSI N570GTX Twin Frozr III PE/OC (single unit)
    HD: X2 SEAGATE 500GIG 7200rpm

Suggest you set your BIOS to default values first.
Set your OC switch to its first OC stage and restart the system. Test for stability with something like Prime 95 and monitor your temps.
Once you have established stability, you can try the second OC stage and repeat the stability testing.
You may of course want to do some reading first in terms of overclocking your 1156 platform. OC'ing the system in the BIOS yourself is usually the best way to achieve this.
Here is a nice guide that will take you through the process step by step. http://www.overclockers.com/3-step-guide-overclock-core-i3-i5-i7/

  • Is it easy to switch out CPU?

You could do a google search to see if anyone is still offering CPU upgrades for G5 computers, but it's old technology now so probably not worth bothering with. It's not just a question of the GHz speed of your processor - your G5 computer is quite a few generations out of date and isn't a match for any of the current Macs. You can't compare it directly to a current Mac Pro because the CPU is completely different, and a whole lot more powerful than any of the G5s were. Even a current Mac Mini or Macbook Pro will easily give you way more processing power for Logic than your G5, even if you did find a CPU upgrade to replace the chips with a slightly faster one. Also, G5s hit a wall with heat problems, so I doubt that you'd be able to put in a faster dual G5 chip without needing much bigger and louder fans. In fact, the last G5 models even had liquid cooling just to be able to run a little faster, which you can't just add to your machine.
Seriously, your best option is to sell the G5 and get a new Mac of some kind. A brand new Mac Pro if you can afford it, or a second hand one from a couple of years ago will still be way better than anything you could do to the G5 to speed it up. Or if you don't need the PCI slots and can get away with just using firewire for your hard drives and audio interface, a recent iMac, MacBook Pro or even a Mac Mini will run Logic far far better than the G5 you have.

  • Ukrainian and English keyboard switching

I have a Logitech Ukrainian English Keyboard, and I have the Ukrainian language keyboard input set in my preferences. For some reason when I am typing in Ukrainian and I need to position my cursor back a space or several to fix a mistake the language defaults to English and I must manually go back and switch back to Ukrainian.
Now I also have a Apple Russian/English Keyboard and the same problem.
I type my documents in multi languages (sometimes), and it is most annoying when I switch to Russian or Ukrainian and go back to do and edit to have it default back to English.
What can I do to keep the language up until I decide to change it not the Mac???
    Thanks in advance!

On a side note: Every PC Clone shop I have visited has a zillion PC's, but they will install your software for you and for some reason you never get the disks... lol
They have tons of printers but finding the ink to replace is difficult if you are looking for Epson or HP, but if you want ColorWay or some other after market ink well no problem.
Paper? We don't have Office Depot types of stores.
PC Games or Movie DVDs? Are all pirated, or you can download them for free of the net here in Ukraine.
Finding an original un opened factory sealed copy of Windows 7 took a week of searching in my town, it was only available in Russian (not even Ukrainian which I would have preferred over Russian) the chain store had one copy of each version and Ultimate was $380 or 3000UAH.
At one of the 4 stores in Kiev (iStore) that sells Macs only, I scored iPods, Snow Lep in Russian, and Apple Keyboards all from Apple and factory sealed. They have iPads and minimal support for repair of the products they stock, so it is not so bad, but Kiev is an hour away by bus. Longer on donkey cart. NO iPhones.
So in the end, if the only real problem I have ever had with any of my Macs is the stupid keyboard switching back and forth on occasion, I guess I can't really complain. For all of these years they have been hassle free, two virus attacks since 1984. Two actual hardware failures since 1984 ... I buy new iMacs when I feel the need to go shopping or something looks just too good to pass up.
My internet DSL Line is about as slow as a dead cow dragging a dead elephant up a 50% grade hill. My actual telephone lines were laid by the Soviets over 40 years ago. I make my own vodka!

  • NF750-G55 Overclocking - Easy OC Switch

    Hello, new to the forums.
    System Specs:
    NF750-G55 mobo 200MHz fsb
    Phenom II x4 955 BE Deneb 3.2GHz
    8GB Kingston HyperX (2 x 4 2GB DDR3 1600)
    Antec 850Watt PSU
    MSI Radeon 5750 1GB DDR5
    Tuniq Tower 120 Extreme
    Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit
    Where to start off?
My Phenom II being a Black Edition processor, I was only OC'ing it via the unlocked multiplier. I had it set to x18 which had brought it to 3.6GHz stable at stock voltage. I turned AMD Cool and Quiet off in the BIOS, and set the power settings in the windows control panel to High performance. I had been running this configuration for months with absolutely no issues whatsoever. I had been monitoring the CPU temps.....never went over 120 F during gaming. So, no problems there.
Today I decided to try the Easy OC switch on the motherboard.
I first set the CPU clock multiplier back to x16 (3.2GHz) via BIOS. Turned AMD Cool and Quiet back on, and set the power settings in the control panel back to Balanced. Rebooted the PC, everything was back to factory defaults.
Next, I powered down the system, pulled the cord from the PSU, then switched both Easy OC switches to the down position in order to gain the extra 20% fsb speed (brought it up to 240MHz). Plugged the PSU power cable back in, turned on the system and went straight into BIOS to see if there was any change. Success, the fsb was now showing at 240MHz, CPU showed 3840 MHz, RAM showed 1604MHz. Everything looked as it should in my opinion.
When I booted up the system, I got a BSOD. Next boot try only gave me two options:
    Boot with system repair (recommended)
    Boot system normally
I chose system repair and this is the message I got:
    STOP: c0000221 Unkown Hard Error
I tried another normal reboot, BSOD. Then I tried another reboot with system repair and got this error message:
STOP: c000021a {Fatal System Error} The initial session process or system process terminated unexpectedly with a status of 0x00000000 (0xc0000221 0x001003f0). The system has been shut down.
I turned system power off. Put both switches back to the up position and booted the system. The system booted successfully.
Does anybody know what those error messages mean? I assume they are memory addresses.
Does anybody have any clue as to why this error occurred, or what I may have done wrong in the process?
Was I supposed to adjust any voltages?
Should I have tried to only switch one switch at a time, ie first 10%, then 15%, then 20%?
Any input or help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks

dont know if this helps but I found on my NF980-G65 (with the switch over clocking feature) that in order for it to be stable when used you need to do a handful of things in the BIOS before clicking the switch again this in on my board.
    1. make sure your ram can handle the over clocked freq. thats pretty important.
    2. I turn off cpu power phase control and led control in green menu.
    3. in cell menu I turn off quite N cool and amd turbo core technology. 3. I then restart step back into BIOS and make sure all of the settings in step 1 and 2 are infact off, then I power down system. Unplug power cord and then flip the switches.
    4. plug cord back in power up step into bios and then change the cpu voltage to 1.39-1.42 resectively and dram voltage to 1.55v. NB voltage is pretty good on my board for self regulation. ran a 3 hour prime95 test with no BSD. however I did see of course a increase of heat to both cpu and system temps CPU was around 53C under 100% load and system was at 38C. which are still within the normal operating ranges.
I however did not like the increase of heat as I run hours upon hours of gaming good time  so I turned off the switches...... or did I?? Well it seems that onec you hit the switches the only way for the system to go back to factory FSB is to shut down and unplug power cord and clear the cmos. what can I say my board is like a child it doesnt always like to listen to commands so you have to spank them lol i.e. clear that cmos. Hope this helps (Also does sound like your memory does not like the high clock speeds, whenever you over clock including factory switches you run the risk of damage to your componets).

  • Easier Keyboard Tab Switching...

    So I've read this: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=6886495&#6886495
Now, while CmdShift [ (or ]) is really neat as a way to switch tabs I would really prefer something I can do with one hand to leave my right free for the mouse (or my coffee).
For years I have used Cmd+Tab in Firefox and have not been able to find a way to do that in Safari. Obviously, I'd prefer to use Safari, as it is much less of a system hog than Firefox.
    Any ideas?
    Message was edited by: Is_907

Well, the menu bar command is Select Next Tab (in the Window menu). In System Preferences > Keyboard & Mouse > Keyboard Shortcuts, click on the + button at the bottom, select Safari from the Application pop-up menu, enter Select Next Tab in the Menu Title field, and then enter a one-handed key combination that will leave you free to sip coffee with the other hand.
    Hope this helps...

  • My keyboard switches languages while I'm typing...

I only have two languages set as keyboards (British and German) but when I´m typing with the British keyboard, it switches to German.
Not the most frustrating problem, but it´s a bit aggravating to find out you´ve been typing things like -Reallz_ thatäs so neatö Iäll have to trz it sometime-.....
    Any suggestions?

You might try to see whether or not you have key commands set up that allow the computer to move from the one language to the other.  In other words, look under the System Preferences at the Keyboard settings.  Under the section titled Keyboard and Text Input, you will see check boxes for "Select the previous input source" and "Select the next input source".  To the right of these lines are the key combinations that allow you to change the language of the keyboard.  If you use the key combination for either of these two items, you will change the language.  It can be easy to do this accidentally in typing.  Either uncheck these two items so that keystrokes do not activate an unwanted language, or highlight the keystrokes next to the checked items and then put in a key combination that you will only hit purposefully, such first hold down the three keys for shift, control, command simultaneously and then hit the = key.  Such a key combination of four keys is probably unlikely to be hit accidently while typing.  My setting for "Select the previous input source" is set to option and space, but I find I sometimes bump this combination while typing, and I think the default for OS X is command and the space bar, which might be even worse.

yes, it is a basic feature. I frequently switch from French to English and no problem, it is almost magical.
Languages I have on my Z10 (sorry if I make typos, I have not found a page with the list correctly written)
Arabic (I don't know which, but it is from right to left)
    Catalan
    Cestina
    Dransk
    Deutch
    Greek
    English UK
    English
    Espanol
    Euskara
    Suomi
    Français
    Galego

    Svenska
    Thai

    Türkçe
    Chinese (simplified)
    Chinese (traditional)
    as you can see:
Japanese is lacking, because BlackBerry has decided to not sell the Z10 in Japan (they currently have a 0.3 marketshare, the market is mainly dominated by local brand like Sony or Anycall)
This time, RIM did things right and Arabic & Chinese are available from day 1

  • How do I put a space between numbers without the keyboard switching to ABC?

Using the onscreen keyboard on the iPhone or iPad I often need to write a telephone number.  I like to separate the area code from the rest of the number, and also write out phone numbers as XXX XXXX, with a space in the middle--but if I hit Space, the keyboard changes to ABC and I have to tap again to change back to 123 (Numbers) to finish the phone number--not a world shaking problem but a nuisance when you have to do it over and over.  Is there a fix for this?---an example of something that is supposed to make your work easier, working against you. Thanks.

Although hyphens are commonly used in the formatting of US phone numbers, they are never used when formatting UK phone numbers. It just wouldn't look 'right' to use them in a UK number and could even confuse readers.

  • Are there KM switches, not KVM? I need just mouse/keyboard switcher

I bought a $60 Belkin KVM, and it does not work with my Mac. I have a Quicksilver, and a newer PC. The PC works fine, the mac keyboard works on it, and the Kensington mouse works fine. I switch it to the mac, and it can see neither the keyboard or the mouse.
I left the VGA cables dangling, as my monitor has 2 inputs, which allows me to use the DVI on the mac, and the vga on the PC.
Do KVM switches HAVE to have the V part hooked up?
Has anyone seen a USB keyboard/mouse only switcher?

The switch should work without video. If the mouse and keyboard work when plugged into the Mac, but not through the switch, the switch, or the USB cable from the switch to the Mac, is bad. Try a different USB cable. If that doesn't help call Belkin.
You can buy USB only switches, such as
    <http://catalog.belkin.com/IWCatProductPage.process?Product_Id=120618#>
Be sure to get the right kind, one flat socket for the keyboard/mouse, and two square sockets, one for each computer.

  • Keyboard Switching in RemoteApp

    Hi,
    My situation is this:
I publish a word processor via RemoteApp. Users from several different territories connect to the this application and therefore I need them to be able to use their native keyboard layout (the server has US English as the default as well as the other required
layouts set up). When the users connect to RemoteApp they are forced to use US English regardless of the local layout, additionally the language bar is not available for them to be able to change layout.
How do I make this work?
    Regards

    Hi Phil,
Thank you for posting in Windows Server Forum.
While you do have multiple languages installed on the client, only the currently selected language is added to the languages available in the remote session. Any additional languages will have to be added from the server (you may have to log on via Remote
Desktop Connection to do this if the remote language bar won't show for you in RemoteApp).(Quoted from below link)

I'm cancelling my BT Youview subscription as if issues with internet then I can't watch anything via the subscription, so decided to move back to Sky for TV as get wider choice of content to watch plus get the Sky Movies in HD as well.
But how easy is it to move my BT Sport to come through my Sky TV box as when try online it says 'Sorry you already have free BT Sports'
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Confused walker . Are you staying with BT for broadband?
If so you can do nothing until they switch off the service on BTTV.
Once that's done trying to order it online will result in failure.
You have to phone the number on the screen to get access on Sky. Why? Because in order to get you have to enter a new 12 month BB contract,
SD is of course free but they want £3 a month for HD.
I opted for SD only and the service became active while I was still on the phone. I later upgraded to HD online, it was painless and Lve as soon as I pressed submit.

i am wondering if the powerbook keys are the same size as my ibook 14" keyboard. I would like to switch out the keys for backlit ones, and figure out later how i will attatch the internal usb for power to the lights.
also if not the keys, what about the whole backlit keyboard? or aftermarket ones that are par with the powerbook kind.

sorry, but thats not the question, i am wondering about powerbook key size and ibook key size, because the unit may not fit, but the keys are all individual. which means if i can solve that part of this issue by switching individual keys out, than i can figure out the backlighting after the fact, theres plenty of extra juice i can wire to the light. do you know about the key sizes, i know how unsuccesful people have been with this problem, but im trying a diff route.
