Easy Networking Question

...I hope!
Ok.. I have a MBPro (Leopard) upstairs as my main computer and an older (non airport) Powerbook (Tiger) downstairs.
I connect to the web wirelessly with the MBPro
I connect to the web through Ethernet with the Powerbook
Can I link these two macs in anyway?
Obviously they are sharing the same broadband supply but can I do more? I'm sure I can sync them somehow. Please tell me how. I get a bit confused when it comes to networking!
Cheers
Pete

Yes you can.
I am not too sure about the link that "DaddyPacheck" provided - it is very old and seems to relate to Mac OS 9 more than Leopard.... In fact, all of the support documentation that I have found on Apple's website is out of date.
[This is a good background article|http://db.tidbits.com/article/9261].
The best source of information is actually Mac Help. When in Finder, go to the Help menu and type:
sharing
Then select "sharing your computer with others on your network. There are step by step instructions for file sharing there.

  • Havent a clue! Please help! Easy ABAP Question!

    Helly Gurus
I am loading from a dso to a cube and doing a lookup on a second dso.
    eg
    'Name' is in the DSO1
    I lookup 'Address' from DSO2
    Then load to the cube.
The problem is there may be more than one address so although I have coded the lookup to
find all addresses, I do know how to get these into my results.
Only the first address it finds is there.
    loop at DATA_PACKAGE.
        select * from DSO1 where
        NAME = DATA_PACKAGE-NAME.
        if sy-subrc = 0.
          move-corresponding DSO2 to itab1. collect itab1.
        endif.
        endselect.
      endloop.
What do I need to do to get all of the results?
I am in 3.5 so do not have the use of an End Routine.
    Thanks
    Tom Tom

you need to do several treatments in fact you need to add records on the data_package (by the way it is not an easy ABAP question as you mentioned !)
    So
Treatment 1: select all the records from ods2 table of adresses outside the loop
        select names adresses
        from ods2
        into table g_itab_ods2
          for all entries in data_package
          where name eq data_package-name.
Treatment 2: delete double records of the internal table.
delete adjacent duplicates from g_itab_ods2 comparing names adresses.
Treatment 3: loop over the data_package. Within this loop read the internal ods2 table and loop over it to assign the corresponding adresses. Then append the results to the temporary data_package_tmp and move all the records to the initial data_package.
    loop at data_package assigning <data_fields>.
       read table g_itab_ods2 into l_g_itab_ods2
          with key name = <data_fields>-name.
          if sy-subrc eq 0.
            loop at g_itab_ods2 assigning <adresses>
            where name                = <data_fields>-name.
              <data_fields>-adresses= <adresses>-adresses.
              append <data_fields> to lt_data_package_tmp.
            endloop.
          endif.
        endloop.
        data_package[] = lt_data_package_tmp[].
    free lt_data_package_tmp.
this should do what you want to do. hope this could help you out.

  • Hey Everyone...  I have a networking Question...

Ok well its more then just one networking question...
I'm working on a game engine (2d) and for the time being it just has two blocks in a 600 by 480 area, both controled by user input on a single comp. I would like to change this so that i can have the blocks be controled by sepeart computers. I know this is possible I just dont know how, any help would be great.
My experience with Java is some what limited i've only been programing for the past 6 months and i've never messed with any network code before.
Any and all help would be great
    Thanks
    Mike

Boy, that other poster was really helpful, yes? :-P
What you probably want to do is open a "socket" between one computer and the other. (TCP is probably the easiest/best for your application, as opposed to UDP). This is actually pretty simple, and basically consists of:
(this client/server arrangement is the easiest. Peer-to-peer would work too, but is generally more complex.)
    1. Computer A decides to become the server and opens a java.net.ServerSocket on port 1234.
    2. Computer B opens a java.net.Socket to computer A's port 1234.
    3. Computer A accepts the connection and gets a java.net.Socket from the ServerSocket.
    4. Now anything computer A writes to the Socket is recieved by computer B, and vice-versa. This is a TCP connection and is stream-based, so it should be familiar if you've done any Java I/O before; in face, you can use java.io.Reader's and Writers, and so on with your Socket.
See http://java.sun.com/docs/books/tutorial/networking/sockets/ for a good introduction to sockets.

  • Where is EASY NETWORK

One of thwe surprise joys of switching to verizon was Easy Network which let me transfer files almost instantly between my office computers. Big graphics could be sent to another computer for refining without copying to a USB drive and then physically carrying it to another computer. i could also print to a networked printer that was not hooked directly to my best computer.  Then McAFEE/Verizon sent me a message to update my security suite ("just takes minutes") but half way through they said i need to delete the older version and when all was done, it turns out they'd quietly and without any warning dropped EASY NETWORK. They basically have told me after several hours hassling with their crummy support system to {word filter avoidance}. They even gave me an 800 number for McAfee customer support--so i could complain to them--which turned out to be a discontinued number!.  I sense there has to be a better way to network without hard wiring all my computers and printers in two rooms but am completely ignorant as to what I could do. Their EASY NETWORK was a dream come true that has now evaporated without warning or explanation. Anyone have any suggestions?

  • Share files in ibook - networking question

Hello, I have a networking question.
I have a brand spakin' new 13' MacBook Pro and an older 14' iBook G4 (with a broken airport wireless card).
My internet is set up so that I have the modem connected to a "wired" ethernet hub, then to an airport express. This way I have wireless for my new MacBook Pro, and I can connect my old iBook to the internet with a ethernet cable.
Herein lies my question: I want to access all my files on my ibook from my MacBook Pro. I've tried the file sharing and etc on system preferences, but for some reason it still doesn't work. I believe its because they are on different networks? (one wireless, one wired?)
Any ideas to make my ibook a simple file server.

    Try repairing disk permissions.
*"The external HD has two partitions, one is a backup of the ibook, and the other has mixed media. When I access my ibook over the network, Only the backup partition appears, and not the mixed media partition. "* Try repairing permissions but not sure if that's going to work. Can't hurt to try.
Launch Disk Utility. Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left, select the FirstAid tab. Click: Repair Disk Permissions. When it's finished from the Menu Bar, Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac.
Also, your profile indicates you are running 10.4.3. If that is the case, you might want to run Software Updates (from the Apple Menu , then click Software Updates.

  • Network question, easy, probably

    Hi,
I have a pretty generic wireless router connected to my DSL. Normally, there's only one machine on the network. We use the wifi to get the laptops on the internet, as needed. Normally, this works just fine. I've never had much need for a network, so I'm not very good at it. I understand some things.
My wife and I like to play bridge with each other, using 3D Bridge Deluxe, by Freeverse. We get the computer to play the other two chairs. This works well, too, except...
We can't figure out how to get the bridge game to work wirelessly. We play in the living room, on our laptops. The wifi router is in the other room. So far, we've only been able to do it by plugging two additional Ethernet cables into the wireless router, and connecting them to our two laptops.
Is there a way to configure the computers, the network, the router... I dunno, whatever... so we can do this on the WiFi?
So far, whenever we try to do this, we get an error message -- Neither laptop can "find" the other laptop on the network.
    Thanks in advance,
    Tim

I'd think you could just do it Mac to Mac, without the Router involved.
Under the Airport Icon, click create Network, when done, turn on File Sharing on both, (not sure how it communicates, so maybe just turning off the Firewall would work best for this though), then connect to the Network you made, from the other one. Might need to Create another one on the other one... dunno.

  • AirPort Express/D-Link Network Question

    Hi,
Right now my set-up is as follows:
    - DSL modem connected to old AirPort Snow
    - Airport Snow connected to Ethernet switch, which is connected to desktop computer, and, via Ethernet cable, to AirPort Express on another floor
    - Both AirPorts are configured to use the same network name with the same password. That way, I can roam with my MacBooks from one AirPort to another and the MacBooks won't have to log on to two separate networks.
At any rate, someone gave me a brand new D-Link DIR-655 Xtreme N router. I want to use this instead of the aging AirPort Snow for speed and coverage improvements. So my question is: can I set up a network essentially substituting the D-Link for the AirPort Snow, and having the D-Link and Airport Express configured with the same network name and password, as it is now?

    Hi Joe,
You got the short answer from
    b Henry B,
which will save you lots of aggravation.
But if you're as curious, as I was, here's some more info I came across. I thought naively that a simple wireless 'repeater' would be straightforward and would work across different vendors of wireless basestations.
Maybe it would? But the Airport Express implements something called a
    b Wireless Distribution System
    b (WDS),
which sounds to me more complicated than just a simple wireless repeater. Maybe it has something to do with also honouring the encryption in the wireless signal to be repeated, err extended? Apparently WDS implementations are not standardized and currently
    b rarely
work across different brands of wireless basestations.
Although apparently several folks have been successful extending the range of
    b linksys
brand wireless basestations using an Airport Express,
    b IF
they first update (swap out?) the linksys firmware with another (open source) version. Whew!
Anyhooow, for your situation, a brute-force option might be to replace the Ethernet cord between the Rogers cable modem and the D-LINK with a longer cable, so you can move the D-LINK closer to Living Room. (Or possibly get a longer CATV cable and move both the cable modem and D-LINK). You could even try increasing the range of the PowerBook with one of those Quickertek antennas.
But I expect it would be
    b cheaper and easier,
if it came to that, to just replace the D-LINK with a 2nd Airport Express, which would then inter-work with the Airport Express in the Living room, using
    b WDS.
    best of luck,
    ...ben

  • Time Capsule Network question,

    Hi there,
I just wanted to try and get a better overview of what's happening with my TC.
    I have a 2010 bought TC,
I live in a relatively small apartment so range and signal is not an issue,
When I first got it I set it up as automatic G and N compatibility, I thought that meant all N clients went on 5GHZ and everything else went 2.4GHZ,
What I realised then was that what was actually happening was that ALL clients were jumping on the 2.4GHZ network with the N clients connecting at about 144Mbps and the G clients at 54Mbps, I was really suprised at this behaviour and even MORE suprised to find out that if I manually ran a 5GHZ wide band network simultaneously with a slightly different SSID ie (Airport 2.4ghz, Airport 5ghz) that N clients would connect at 300Mbps on the 5GHZ network and G at 54Mpbs on the 2.4GHZ network, I can't find anywhere this is explained! and all of the websites that tell you how to set up time capsule never mention that you will get twice the performane with a seperate 5ghz band running. I can't see the downside to this and think it should be default behaviour? All clients can still communicate with each other regardless of which band they connect to.
I then tried to set up the guest network just out of interest and could see that my TC was now broadcasting 3 SSIDS! One for the 2.4ghz one for the 5ghz and one for the guest network.
So what frequency is this guest network broadcast in this configuration? Also is it possible to broadcast 4 SSIDS? One each for 2.4 and 5 ghz on the standard network and a 2.4 and 5 on the guest??
Also what are you thoughts regarding my original point of having to set up the 5ghz manually to get clients to connect at over 144Mbps?
    Thanks,
    Regards,
    John

I can't see the downside to this and think it should be default behaviour?
Remember that Apple always tends to try to make things simple. It's much easier to tell a typical user that his computer will connect to the best available signal and leave it at that. Probably 90% of users don't even understand what dual band is.
You have a small apartment so signal strength is not an issue. But, it's a fact that 5 GHz signals are not nearly as strong as 2.4 GHz signals. After all, you can't get something for nothing. In the case of 5 GHz, you gain speed, but give up distance capability and penetration power.
In a larger home, if the default were to have a separate name for the 5 GHz network, a lot of users would not be able to connect using 5 GHz if the signal has to pass through multiple walls or a ceiling and a few walls. Even if they might get the 5 GHz signal, it will be much weaker. They will have a better, stronger and more reliable connection at 2.4 GHz in this case. Isn't that what they want?
The default setting of the AirPort is to let computers connect to the "best" available signal quality. True, the "best" quality signal may not be the "fastest" signal in some cases. Still, for most users, having one network name for both bands makes a lot of sense.
Users who are interested in advanced features and setup have an excellent resource in the Apple AirPort Networks Guide. It's right there on the main forum page for all to see. Did you not see this?
So what frequency is this guest network broadcast in this configuration?
The Guest network is dual band as well. You can't assign a separate name to the 5 GHz band on the Guest network. Both the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands use the same network name or SSID.
Also is it possible to broadcast 4 SSIDS?
No, 3 would be the maximum.
Also what are you thoughts regarding my original point of having to set up the 5ghz manually to get clients to connect at over 144Mbps?
As a regular member of the forum assisting dozens of users each week, I've stated my opinion above. I dislike trying to generalize, but Apple made the right decision for most users with the present default settings. As I said, we spend a good deal of time just trying to explain what +dual band+ is.
You appear to be an advanced user interested in advanced features and settings on the router. That's good. We could use some more help on the forums, so please check the forum pages often and help us out when you see a question from a user asking about the more advanced features of the router.

  • EA6900 setup on my home network question

    Hello,
So I have a home network which has been working fine for several years and I had an older Linksys wifi router but with a new TV I needed the "n" protocal for streaming videos to a wireless connection to the TV.
SO, I installed the new EA6900 and got everyone connected and the TV is connected to it also.......VERY easy setup!! Thanks!
    Now the hard part.
I want to have the wireless connection from the TV "see" and grab video from / through my Seagate Central.
What I cannot do is get the EA6900 to "See" the Seagate Central drive even though I have the network ip address for it.
The Seagate is NOT hard wired to the EA6900. The reason being is that the Seagate is in a remote media cabinet and I only have a single cat5 cable coming to the EA6900 location AND the EA6900 CANNOT be located where the Seagate central is. (no signal would get to house.) AND the Seagate central cannot be at the EA6900 location.
My network is setup as follows.
    Cable modem > Router > Seagate Central & EA6900
Ask me any questions but be aware I know enough to be dangerous but follow instructions exactly.
Thanks in advance and Merry Christmas all !
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Found answer.
I needed to place the EA6900 in bridge mode. Now I can see the seagate just fine.
Both my main router and the EA6900 were trying to act as a main router.
I found a post about bridge mode and followed the below pasted instructions.
I did find that there were TWO IPv4 listed IP address so make sure you use the IP listed in the IPv4 "SECTION"
    Hope this helps someone else!
Before you set the EA6900 to Bridge Mode, get the IPv4 address settings on the Status (Troubleshooting>>>>>Status>>>>Report), please take note of this. After that, set the EA6900 to Bridge Mode (Connectivity>>>>Internet Settings>>>>Edit>>>>>Bridge Mode). Select “Specify an IPv4 address  “option and then set the IPV4 address that you have had on the router, please try to make sure that you set at least 1 DNS Server. This is one of the workarounds of your concern.

  • Simple Home Networking Question

Hi, I've got a dumb question.
I have an iMac with airport extreme and am going to purchase an iBook with airport extreme and want to buy a base station or router to use my internet connection wirelessly as well as share between the two machines.
The question is, do I need to make the base station or router connected to one of the computers at all times? Can I have the base station sitting somewhere and then connect both machines to it wirelessly? Or does on machine have to serve the base station?
    Please help. Thanks.

...because I was told they're a easier to use than the non-Apple routers.
That is all subjective. Non Apple routers are typically configured using any web browser. The Apple base stations all require the use of special Apple software.
Of the basic Airport base station, Airport Express, and Airport Extreme, which one is best if all I want to do is make my iBook wireless?
All of them are equally well at creating a wireless network.
If you have any devices which need to connect via Ethernet, you do not want the AirPort Express (AX).
Currently Apple is only selling the square 802.11b/g/n AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS) and the 802.11b/g AX.
The older round 802.11b/g AEBS and the AX have a USB port which supports a single compatible USB printer.
The new square 802.11b/g/n AEBS has a USB port which supports multiple USB hard drives and USB printers.
You may also want to take a look at the table on iFelix's site.

  • Small office network questions

I have a small office with 4-5 mac computers. I have a Mac mini set up as a file server and I use a standard cable connection for my internet service. I use a wired router (ethernet cables) all going to a netgear switch.
Just bought a mac mini and a drobo storage device. I have successfully set up the drobo on the mac mini and I can "see" the files and read & write to the external drive. I also have a few other people in the office -- which will need access to the drobo via the network, but have a few questions there:
    1. I don't see the name of the other computers that can connect to the unit. When I get on one of the other machines and look for the drobo I can find it & edit files but from the mac-mini side, I can't see the proper name of the other computer. How do I do this?
    2. Can I limit which folders are accessible within the drobo that attached to the mac mini
    3. Am I missing anything from a safety standpoint? Can Anyone come into my office and access the files that are on the mac/mini drobo? Worse off, is the mac mini vulnerable to the outside world with this setup?
Thanks for the help, new to all this networking stuff.

It's been a week, so i don't know if you have already worked this out, but...
while I am not familiar with your router, when I have used linksys before, i find it better to use static IP addresses for everything.  Try setting static IP addresses and make sure everyone's mask is 255.255.255.0.  Some routers also have a flag to allow computers to see each other.
    Best of luck.

  • Cisco ASA 5505 VPN Routing/Networking Question

I have a very basic question about Cisco ASA 5505 IPsec Site to Site VPNs.  I want to install a Cisco ASA 5505 at a Data Center, in a LAN subnet that utilizes publicly routable IP addresses.  I would like to install a second Cisco ASA 5505 in a remote branch office as its peer.
Regardless of whether I use publicly routable IPs at the branch office in the "inside" network or non-routable IPs, how would the devices and servers at the Data Center know to route IP packets destined for the branch office back through the Cisco ASA instead of through the default gateway at the Data Center?  I can see accomplishing this if every single device at the Data Center is configured with routing table entries, but that isn't feasible.  It also isn't feasible to use the Cisco ASA 5505 as the default gateway for all of the devices as the Data Center, allowing it to decide where the traffic should go.
What am I missing?  Is the solution to try to map branch office IPs to IP addresses within the Data Center's LAN subnet so that all of the traffic is on the same subnet?

You can do it in several different ways.
One way is to tell the server that if it has traffic to network x then it needs to go to the ASA all other traffic is to head for the default gateway.
In windows this is done via the route command
do not forget to make it "persistent" otherwise the route will disapear when your reboot the server.
    in unix/linux
It is also the route command
Or you can tell your "default gateway" to route that network to the ASA
    Good luck

  • Apple remote and multiple Apple TV's on same network question

I have 1st gen apple TV, Want to add 2nd gen apple tv.  I assume I can do that.  My real question is when using apple remote, can I control both Apple TVs independently?
Anyone have any knowledge of if this will work or not?

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
If you are talking about the supplied remote, as Rudegar suggests you can pair each remote with each device so that only that remote will control the device it's paired with.
To pair a remote with a device hold down the menu and FF buttons together for six seconds or until you see a chain icon on screen. However it's not all that common for the TV's to be in different locations where an unpaired remote is unlikely to control both Apple TV's together. If you leave the remotes unpaired you should be able to use either remote with either Apple TV.
Alternatively if you are talking about the remote App for the iPhone, iPad or iPod, each Apple TV will show up as a separate device and you can control any Apple TV on your network from anywhere in your home.

  • Can you help me with an OS 9 OSX Networking question?

Hi, I'm hoping that this would be the right forum for this question.
Deal is this... I have an entire archive of material on a Beige G3 with
OS 8.6 - much of the material in files and so forth require staying in
that Legacy environment to access stuff that can only be retrieved on
    older Native OS 8.6/9 apps.
Is there a way, that I can access this computer from an OSX machine via a
network? I know this may be a radical cross-platform situation but it
would eliminate alot of headaches if i could figure out a way to create
either a Remote Desktop, or Networked set-up where I can access the OS 8.6
machine from one of our OSX (10.4.11) laptops or desktops.
Any advice on the simplest/easiest way to set this up? The networks do all
share a router for internet access, so they are physically connected via
ethernet - that much is in place. If anyone's got a primer on how to make
this configuration happen on the older machine, I'd be most grateful as I
need to get a bunch of stuff off of there for a project and am currently
having to shuttle things via old SCSI-port zip drives to a newer machine...
(The Beige doesn't recognize USB or FW PCI cards -tho i have em installed...)
    THANK YOU!
    Mike

Hi, I understand what you mean. The Shareway app as i understand it, is only designed to run on the older OS as the 'host' - per se. When I tried entering the "remote" computers' username/pw on it, it did not recognize it. Is there a version of Shareway that would go on the newer OSX computer? In any event, I was able to get an OSX machine to read the OS 8 machine - by using the IP Server address entry and the "Connect to Server" option for File Sharing from OSX to OS 8/9.... Problem I now have is, as per other post - i wanted to simply open Filemaker on the older OS 8.6 machine from a newer machine to enter some data.
When I try that, the message is that A) I must have a newer FM version on my OSX
machine to open that app - and B) it will convert the file on the OLDER machine
to the NEWER machine's FM version - which isn't the goal as i still want to maintain my FM 4.1 database as an OS 8.6 file for when I am logging in on that machine.
Doesn't seem it should have to be this complicated eh? Arrgh.
Isn't there just a way to access and open docs on an 8.6 machine from another computer and perform tasks/functions "as if" i were logged into OS 8.6 -- would
that be Remote Desktop? Can i run THAT from OSX to OS 8.6 ?
    Thanks!
    Mike
