Easy Question: Brush tool overlaps dark?

Hi all,
I'm having an issue with my brush tool - this is probably an easy question to most of you.
Here is an example of my issue, when brush strokes overlap, a darker color is created:
I'm trying to brush with one flat color, with no overlaping effect. Here is a photo of what I'm trying to do, but this example was done with the pencil tool. I want to do this with the brush:
I'd like to be able to switch from the top style to the bottom style when needed.
Thanks for any help with this - the usual way I go about this doesn't seem to work unless I'm doing something wrong, open to options, is this a preferences issue?

If your brush is supposed to be opaque then check Opacity and Flow are 100% in the Options bar when Brush Tool is active.

How do I select a square brush for the brush tool in CS6?  Sorry if this is a simple question, but nothing has ever been simple for me in Photoshop.

I don't believe there is a square brush among the sets that ship with Photoshop, but there are plenty to download, and it is super easy to make one.
Just drag with the rectangular Marquee tool, fill with black on a new layer, and go Edit > Define brush preset

  • Why is my brush tool slicing through when I overlap a stroke?

When I use my brush tool, I go and try to do some cool designs with it, but it wont let me overlap a stroke without "Slicing" through the stroke. Please help:( Here's an example Gyazo - d769be8e1cbaa1bb5e391bd8c5ed52b9.png

We'll need to see the complete object as well as the appearance stack and the brush itself.

  • When I use my brush tool, it works fine unless I overlap the brush with another brush stroke.

When I use my brush tool, it works fine unless I overlap the brush with another brush stroke. When that happens it turns bright red. How do I fix this and turn it back to the default setting?

I was all ready to say you have fill turned down until I got to the bit about it turning red.  Does this happen on a new document with a single layer, or only on multi layer documents?  So like cp says...  brush or layer mode most probably.  I did wonder about Quick mask though.

  • Brush Tool Cursor (Quick Question)

Normally, the shape of the selected brush appears as the cursor. Occasionally, brush tool cursor is only a crosshair that doesn't reflect the current brush. I'm assuming the answer is a simple shortcut key. How does one force the cursor to be the brush shape?

Are you using the Photoshop SDK?

  • How to make smooth line by brush tool using shift key?

Heya, I have a short question. Is there a way to make smooth line by brush tool using shift key, without that characteristic dot on the begining? I'm using PS CS6 on Win7.

    Cheers

The shift key constrains the brush to paint a straight line. Those dark spots you see are from two paint strokes overlapping each other. If the flow or opacity of the brush is not at 100% you can see the stroke below it.

  • New to the Adjustment Brush Tool...HELP!

Hello!  I am fairly new to Lightroom, and the Adjustment Brush tool specifically, and I am having some problems with it!  I have watched tons of tutorials on using it, and it seems relatively easy...although when I go into my program and attempt to use it, nothing happens to my photo...say if I wanted to adjust the exposure on the face of an individual, I will go in and select the tool, decrease the exposure, make the brush and feather the size I want it, and when I go to "paint" the area I want altered, nothing happens?  The pins appear as if to show me that's where I started, but then no change happens to the area I attempted to paint.  Do I need to select something somewhere to be able to actually use the brush to paint?  Any help is appreciated!!  Thank you!!

First, verify that you have painted something. At the bottom is an option that says "Show Selected Mask Overlay", enable this. It will show the area you have painted so far.
If you see pink appear, this is where you have painted so far. Try changing your adjustments more drastically (i.e. move sliders all the way one direction or another). If you see the effect appear, dial things back until you have what you want.
If you do not see pink appear, make sure your Flow and Density sliders are up. This act like opacity, so if they are too low, you aren't laying down much "paint" with your brush.

  • Why is the brush tool in Illustrator CC inferior to the brush tool in CS6? It has less control of fidelity and smoothness. It is terrible - and I'm an illustrator. Can I use the CS6 brush engin in CC?

I loved the brush tool in CS6 Illustrator- by turning fidelity to the lowest setting, and smoothness down to zero, pumping up pressure sensitivity, it accurately reproduced the fine shapes of a drawn stroke. I'm an illustrator, so I don't want artificially smoothed curves, I want the line I drew.
This works really well with my Wacom Cintiq tablet... but now CC has removed this level of customisation for the brush tool. WHY? The program is called Illustrator, and as an illustrator, I can tell you having an accurate and finely adjustable brush engine to illustrate with is very important to me and to lots of other people who can draw, and draw for a living.
Now you get this dumbed down control panel when you double click on the brush tool icon- just one slider, with only 4 steps from 'accurate' (not very) to 'smooth' (almost indistiguishable from 'accurate')... it is like I have contracted a nerve disease - I draw a line, and it forms into something quite different to the path my pen took. WHY? Can I get rid of this rubbish engine? Trying the blob brush - what is the point of this brush? It is just like the old brush, except for a cursor that shows the largest size for pressure sensitivity... and it has the same crude 4 step smooth/accurate adjuster, that doesn't change the line much at all. I have the latest driver in my Cintiq, so I don't think that is the issue, and CS6 works better than CC.
I am very disappointed, Adobe. Do I have to go back to CS6 for all my Illustration work? Please improve the CC brush tool controls.
I am still reeling from Adobe's quiet removal of a whole tool: Inverse Kinematics/Bone tool from Flash CC JUST when I was finally using it to animate, but that's another story.
Honestly, having use them for a while, Photoshop,
Illlustrator, InDesign and Flash CC are, as far as I can tell, no step up at all from CS6, except that you have to pay for them forever.

More on this, now becoming known as the CC pencil tool fiasco, on these fora:
Re: PLEASE PLEASE adobe. The new pencil tool has become unusuble to me
Re: Changing line fidelity with CS6 Brush Tool
Re: All pressure sensitive brush presets gone!
If you are affected by the lower accuracy controls for CC's brush or pencil tools, use this Bug report/Feature request form to let the folks at Adobe know- they are actually hopefully going to fix this.......
thanks to Daniel for setting this up:
hey all, if you are going to file a bug report (as per Neeraj's suggestion), i've made up a draft to make the process easier.  feel free to adjust it as much as you want, obviously; trying to equip us busy folk.

    ******BUG******
    Concise problem statement:
I was told to by Neeraj N(staff) to report this issue based on this link : (http://forums.adobe.com/message/6065706).
The Pencil / Brush tools have lost essential functionality with the addition of the new accurate / smooth adjustment preset. Users are no longer able to specify high-accuracy pen mapping, as the finest accuracy setting is now set to 2.5px (legacy versions allowed accuracy to .5px).
I would think adding additional slider nodes to allow more accurate mapping (while still using the accurate / smooth preset) allow for a minimal change in programming with a maximum return for power users.
    Steps to reproduce bug:
    1. open illustrator
    2. use either pencil or brush tool.
    3. draw erratic and high detail shapes
Results: shapes are smoothed to 2.5px smoothness, even when the accurate / smooth adjustment preset is set to full accuracy.
Expected results: shapes have minimal / no smoothing to maintain the integrity of the artwork.
    Thank you for your consideration.

  • Why can't I use the Basic brush tool?

I'm learning the ropes of drawing in Illustrator and I've fallen at the first hurdle. Why can't I use the Basic brush tool? Whenever I select the brush tool and use the 'Basic' brush type, the cursor turns into a hashed circle indicating I can't draw. If I load other brushes, I can draw with other brush types, but I can't use the Basic one. If I select the Basic brush when I have other brushes loaded and try to draw with it, it always defaults to a different brush! I don't understand why.
On a related matter, I'm also having trouble changing brush size. I know that using the [ and ] keys changes brush size, but I have no idea what the values are. If I try this in Photoshop, I can see the brush size in the Options bar, but in Illustrator it doesn't appear anywhere! Not in the Brushes palette, the Stroke palette or the Appearance palette. Where can I see the brush size?

    Glitcher,
The following is a general list of things you may try when the issue is not in a specific file (you may have tried/done some of them already); 1) and 2) are the easy ones for temporary strangenesses, and 3) and 4) are specifically aimed at possibly corrupt preferences); 5) is a list in itself, and 6) is the last resort.
    1) Close down Illy and open again;
    2) Restart the computer (you may do that up to 3 times);
    3) Close down Illy and press Ctrl+Alt+Shift/Cmd+Option+Shift during startup (easy but irreversible);
    4) Move the folder (follow the link with that name) with Illy closed (more tedious but also more thorough and reversible);
    5) Look through and try out the relevant among the Other options (follow the link with that name, Item 7) is a list of usual suspects among other applications that may disturb and confuse Illy, Item 15) applies to CC, CS6, and maybe CS5);
    Even more seriously, you may:
    6) Uninstall, run the Cleaner Tool (if you have CS3/CS4/CS5/CS6/CC), and reinstall.

  • Problem using PSE9 Brush Tool!

I am experiencing a problem using the PSE9 Brush Tool. The color does produced by the brush not match the color of the sample picked by the Eyedropper Tool, Painting near the area where the sample was picked-up results in a much darker color.

Check the blend modes for the brush tool in the tool options bar.
Also if your painting on a blank layer check the blend modes in the layers panel.
Either way try the Normal mode.

Scot's answer is correct and actually I would appreciate it if you marked it as such as it is often a mistake a new user makes it would be nice if other new users could find this thread and Scott's answer by having it marked answrd.
Now what is not apparent is that Adobe went out of its way to give support for hardware they do not manufacture because many of their user use the tablet. However since they do not make the product you have to buy it from the manufacturer.
Adobe also offers as an option twain acquire plug ins but Adobe does not manufactures scanners so you have to buy the scanner and if Adobe did make scanners you would still have to buy the scanner as the people that work to design and build the scanners have to get paid.
The same thing goes for Camera raw which gives you a way to edit photographs as does Photoshop but without the camera nd image files it is pretty useless for editing images.
The same goes for Premiere without the footage, for which you need a camcorder to capture, there is not much you can do with non existing footage.
So you have to buy a camera…
and it goes on and on and on.
BTW get yourself a tablet and life will much easier then what you can do with a mouse.

  • Keyboard shutcut for choosing background color when brush tool is active?

    Hello,
I've forgotten the keyboard shortcut for choosing a background color when the brush tool is the active tool . Holding down the alt key with the brush selected chooses the foreground color. What key do you hold down to select the background color?  I'm on a mac. Thanks.

One keyboard shortcut for choosing a background color that you might not be aware of is opt + I  (on a mac)
That's interesting, but is it a lower case L or upper case i?  I certainly can't make it work on a PC.
A couple of thought for you...  There are no easy to use shortcuts unused in Photoshop nowadays, so I sometimes steal them from little or never used operations.  For instance, how many people use H for panning instead of the Space bar.  I know H has the benefit of locking in panning, but I don't think I have 'ever' had a need for it.  I have, in the past, stolen Y from Blur and Smudge, but I have not done so in recent versions.
But for quickly and constantly picking background colours, you need a convenient key, and that suggests the Z key to me, as I always zoom with the mouse and Ctrl (or Alt) Space bar.  Just a thought.
Another option is the Wacom Express keys if you are using a tablet that has them.  The Keystroke option won't accept some combinations, but I think it would be doable
Shift F4 is for an Action I used to use a few versions back, to place guides at 50% vertical and horizontal.  They are easy to snap drag nowadays.
One last idea on a similar vein, are programmable keys on custom keyboards.  I don't know if they are available for the Mac, but I use a Logitech G110 which has 12 programmable keys on the left of the usual layout.  These 12 keys can be programed three different ways, and selected by the M keys above.  I originally bought this keyboard for its illuminated keys, but I quickly got used to the extra functionality.  Even the little volume control, in the top right corner, (highlighted in magenta below) is such a convenience. I use these keys for launching Actions,, although I found I had to make both G8 and G12 mirror the Ctrl key as I occasionally hit them by mistake.

  • Spot healing brush tool luminosity not working as expected?

I have a question about the content aware spot healing brush tool:
The normal and replace mode work just fine as expected... the color mode does indeed a fine job fixing the color cast of i.e. small green or purple lens flares, by picking up the surrounding color.
The next mode after color, called luminosity, should work in the same fashion: it should pick up the surrounding brightness (luminosity), and adjust the relative brightness of the area to be patched (i.e. reduce the brightness of a small lens flare, and preserve the texture underneath).
Instead, luminosity doesn't work much different than the normal mode, it creates a new texture (based on content aware or surrounding area), and thereby destroying the original texture, instead of just fixing the local brightness.
My question for Adobe: is this behavior intentional? or was the luminosity mode "overlooked" by accident?

Here are some examples of how the brush is working in a real world example:
As I have mentioned, normal, replace, and color work exactly as expected. color in LAB mode works even better than in RBG mode.
what is not working as (at least by me expected) is luminosity mode (even if the color mode brush is used first). I thought/had hoped for that the luminosity mode would work some magic without creating new textures (the color mode is only very very lightly adding a new texture).
I just wanted to hear what the logic behind this mode is... (and possibly find a 1-2 click tool to fix those lens flares.)

  • Please add white balance adjustment to brush tool!!

Please add to the brush tool the ability to adjust white balance.  I know you can currently paint a color over areas, but I would like to see a true white balance control in a brush.  This would be quite useful for wedding or event photographers who shoot quickly in varied lighting often without flash.

More specifically, I would like to paint at 5500k or 3500k or whatever color temp I choose, measure, detect, or feel so inclined to.  Like I said before, I realize the paint with tint works, but painting a white balance would be much easier.  I never mentioned accurate.  Accurate photographs in mixed lighting usually look bad (especially when you mix in fluorescent).  My clients don't want "accurate" photos, they want what they remembered the event to look like.  I don't feel the need to suggest the current features fail in any way to make a suggested improvement upon those features.  The current (LR2) demosiac engine works well, but LR3 got an overhaul.  Was demosiac in LR1 and LR2 a failure?  I believe my suggestion is consistent with the intent of LR.  While painting a warming or cooling color would certainly achieve the desired results, painting a preset color balance or manual temp/tint would be quicker.  It makes for a better workflow.

  • My CS6 Brush Tool does not sample - paints black only

I have reset my tools individually and each tool.  Still the same - brush tool paints black only .

There's an odd little behaviour that can confuse, or down right drive you mad, where Alt (Opt) clicking the image with the Brush tool selected changes the 'Background' colour and not the Foreground colour.  To fix this open the Color Panel, and click on the Foreground colour, which will then become the 'active' colour and respond to Alt clicking a colour in the image.
    The difference is subtle.
    Foreground colour active
    Background colour active
It will also depend on how you have your UI set.  With a dark UI I can see a thin white border around the active colour.  That changes to a black border with a lighter UI.  I found this one hard to track down when I first ran into it, so if new to you, commit it to memory.
