Easy Set-Up Capturing Mini DV footage Sony TRV30

Hi -
I go back and forth and use iMovie for some quick and easy projects and for the longer more elaborate projects I use Final Cut Express.
It's been so long since I've imported footage into FCE that I can't remember my easy settings.I've tried a number of them and they don;t seem to work.
I have a Sony HandyCam with firewire and a firewire cable to a MacPro.
I know I can easily import into imovie then export a quicktime, but I'd rather have it straight away in FCE.
Can anybody give me the sequence and settings for capturing in FCE?
Thanks!
Anne Z

Hi Ann
Without knowing wether you are a NTSC or PAl. Try EASY SETUP--DV NTSC FIREWIRE BASIC or PAL FIREWIRE BASIC. If that does not work try easy setup--DV PAL or easy setup--NTSC or failing that use dv setup.
I hope that works...try trashing preferences..Something Tom Wolesky suggests

DVCam decks should automatically lock onto the control track and playback OK, it's normally not the case the other way around with regular DV decks that don't pick up on the fact it's DVCam material and play back slowly and with picture and sound breakup.

  • Unable to capture Mini DV footage through quicktime player 7

I am using the "new movie recording" window on quicktime player 7 to try and capture a tape. However every time I try I get an error message telling me:
This message shows after about every 2 seconds of recording which is strange as it the sort of thing you would expect to see if you unplugged a cable half way through. However this is not the case and i have run a cleaning tape through he camera so it is not that.
Is there a solution to this so I can record the whole tape into one MOV file rather than thousands of 2 second ones? I tried with Quicktime Player X and got the same thing happen with an even less detailed error message.
Possibly recording through an external screen if thats possible?

I suspect that QuickTime's error-checking is stronger than whatever is used in the camera. QT is probably detecting breaks in the timecode than the camera doesn't see.
Tapes can curl for many reasons: age, heat, cold, humidity, etc.
If you can get it to run on your Mac, Mitz Pettel's old Vidi application (http://www.mitzpettel.com/) is great for ignoring timecode breaks. Vidi runs well on my 10.4 PPC Mac; unpredictably on my 10.6 Intel Mac. I don't know how well/whether it works on newer versions of OS X.

  • Trouble importing HDV mini DV footage from my Sony HVR Z7U into FCP 6.0.6

Cannot import HDV mini DV footage from my HVR Z7U camcorder into Final Cut Pro
I can Import the footage as an NTSC 720x480 signal.
One consistent answer is to make sure that in camcorders menu settings that the IN/OUT REC - iLINK SET is set to off.
No Luck, no communication with FCP in that mode.
That being said when cameras ilink is on I can import 740/480 NTSC video, not HDV.
    Here’s where I’m at now
The video was shot in 1080i 30p onmini DV.  With my Sony HVR Z7U Ican only import the video into FCP as a NTSC 720x480 signal. It looks great butnot in HDV?
I believe I have tried most every setting in my FCP audio video settings to import the HD footage into FCP. FCPseems to only recognize the camcorder in the NTSC mode.
Example - In  FCP  Audio /Video Settings
    Sequence Preset - HDV 108030p
    Capture Preset    - HDV
Device Control     - HDV FireWire Basic
Video Playback   - Only gives none or NTSC choices(I chose Apple FireWire)
With the setting above and Sony’s  ilink off- window alert reads…
“Device is not connected or the capture preset is not set up correctly. You may still log offline clips. This might also happen if you play DV footage in an HDV device.” The camcorder viewer reads the digital footage as 1080i 30p. So it’s not shot in DV footage.
With the iLink on - I get the same window alert.  Unless I capture in NTSC
For me FCP will only log and capture the footage when the Capture and Device Control Presets are set to a NTSC format and the camcorder ilink is on. Hence an NTSC 720x480 signal is imported. Not HDV?
Come on, I know this a common problem and I must be missing something very simple. Please Help! Many thanks.

Someone mentioned using log and transfer. I use this with all my Compact Flash HD videos. I have found no info for importing HDV from mini DV in log and transfer with a (my) camcorder.

Gary, this is the Final Cut Pro X forum.  You might try the other forum for FCP. Still, I have the Z5U Sony which is nearly identical to your camera except for the zoom as I recall.  I think we have the same menu system.  I see to recall there is a menu option that sets the output file format.  Also you can set it to record in SD as well as I recall.  I read my files in from tape to FCP X easily ... in high def.  Best wishes.

  • Capturing Old Hi8 footage using Sony TRV310 DIgital 8 Camera Using Firewire

I have read many of the previous posts regarding capture of old Hi8 footage. I recently purchased a MacPro and am in the process of converting my video and photography work over to it from a PC. I have both a MiniDV and the above mention Digital8. There is no problem capturing new footage shot with the Digital8 since it is recorded in digital format. However, I have years of old Hi8 tape. I get the "VTR OK" message, and can use the on screen control to advance and view the tapes. However, when I try to capture them into FCP 6.0, I get a message that it is waiting for a time code. Is there a setting that I need to change to get around this?

Thank you all for your prompt responses. You were on the money.
I used the "uncontrollable device" setting with "Capture Now". This allowed me to used the camcorder's on board controls to advance the video for capture. When you use the "uncontrollable device setting, you no longer get the "VTR OK" status message. You get a "No communications" status message.
The capture of the hour long Hi8 tape went fine with no dropped frames that I can tell. However, at the end of the capture, I got a message that the "Audio Sample rate for the file was different than the Audio sample rate of the source tape. And, that the audio and video might be out of sync". Sure enough, the audio is slightly out of sync with the video. I'll have to look back in my old camera manuals to see if I can find what the audio sample rate for Hi8 is and make that adjustment.
    Again thanks.

  • I would like to set a capture time so it stops after 90 mins

i would like to set a capture time so it stops after 90 mins so if I am not there it stops recording is this possible?

Thanks. I had tried that, but was still having problems. Then I realized that I was using three addresses on both devices.  Once I changed it to only one email on one iPad and a different email on the other, it worked great. Your message encouraged me to dig deeper and think differently. It worked. Thanks again!

Photo Stream does not do videos. For videos, you must import to your computer. You can use iPhoto to import them.

  • Unable to Capture PAL DV footage

I'm working on a project that requires I edit with both PAL and NTSC footage shot on mini-DV. I was about to purchase a plug-in to convert the PAL footage to NTSC, but find that I can't even capture the PAL footage to begin with.
I tried using both a deck and a camera as the source device to capture from and they both play the tape just fine and on the camera's LCD (not a PAL camera by the way), I can view the footage perfectly, but still FCP does not acknowledge any video on the tapes.
I've even tried capturing on iMovie-it tells me that the footage can't be captured because it is 'half-frames' and mentions LP and SP modes. Would this really matter and why does my camera play it just fine?
Also, when I play the tape on the camera and plug-in to a television, the picture keeps rolling, but again, plays perfectly on my non-pal camera.
I've tried switching all pre-sets to PAL, but it doesn't help.
I'm about to make a dub tape with a PAL camera (Sony Z1U) and see what happens, but if anyone has any other suggestions, I'd really appreciate any help.
    Thanks.

I have never seen an NTSC camera that plays PAL tapes!

  • Easy set-up configuration

I shot a project in DV wide screen format 16:9 (on mini-DV tape), in capturing the footage in FCE using Easy Set-up should the FORMAT drop down be set to NTSC (I'm in the States) and should the USE drop down be set to DV-NTSC Anamorphic? (The other USE drop down options have 32 kHz, Anamorphic Basic, Firewire Basis or DV Converter.)
I know this is a lame question but I've read through the FCE manual and am just not finding a direct answer.
    Thanks!!

Those are indeed the correct settings.

  • Easy Set Up settings- ? any difference in result between the D-NTSC & AVCHD

I have just spent a few days starting to understand and work with FCE. My first project was to get my AVCHD materials sitting on Sony Memory sticks into my computer for later use. I finished, but realized I may have done something essentially wrong.
My objective is to get the maximum data quality into my HDD and subsequent projects. My shoot source material is AVCHD at max HD at full HD resolution 1920 x 1080.
When moving on to MY next project which was to start capturing Analog video, I was studying and I read about Easy Set Up. This 'window' never came up when I installed FEC. Now, I see that the Easy SetUp that was in play for all of my ingesting of my AVCHD material was as follows: Format - all formats, Rate - All Rates and Use -DV-NTSC
I see now there are other set ups and now need to understand...
    1) Should I have used a different Easy Set up for the AVCHD capture e.g. - Format = HD , Rate = 29.97fps, and Use = AVCHD-Apple Intermediate Codec 1920X 1080i60 ?
    2) Is there any difference to the Capture Scratch files I created having used the wrong (?) Easy Set Up ... = Format = all formats, Rate = All Rates and Use = DV-NTSC ....VERSUS .... the Easy Set Up I noticed later which is ... Format = HD , Rate = 29.97fps, and Use = AVCHD-Apple Intermediate Codec 1920X 1080i60 ?
In short, have I messed up and created .MOV files that will not be at the best possible quality and use for editing later?
I am more than happy to redo all my capturing to get the best results.
    THANKS

    Thanks Tom...
To clarify please... confirm or correct (I am accomplishing some learning here )
If I hear you right ... because I ingested the material through the Log and Transfer function (for my AVCHD footage), the settings found in the Easy SetUp don't apply. It would appear that for that Log and Transfer function all ingested AVCHD is done with a default setting at all times. In Log and Transfer I found settings in preferences to import, putting the video at AIC and there is no alternate (other than for sound)Also the settings .
    I opened QT M.Inspector and saw the following: Format = Apple Intermediate Codec, 1440 x 1080 (1888 x 1062), Millions,16-bit Integer (Little Endian), Stereo (L R), 48.000 kHz & Current Size = 1888 x 1062 pixels (Actual)
I think that this means that even thigh the pre-set is at 1440 x 1080 , that I actually achieve closer to the 1920 x 1080 result ... because of the size of the actual file itself?
So .. to summarize my inquiry ... from what I am leaning... As long as I ingest AVCHD in the Log and Transfer function I will always get the maximum result in resolution and file size. And that the settings I found in ESU are for tape capture only.
Thanks Tom ... I see you are busy on another forum as well. I appreciate all you are doing. If you see me again please understand that I do appreciate the help. I learn in a very different way than normal. After surviving a plane crash doing volunteer help work, and dealing with resulting head injuries the process and flow for me is different and a challenge. I started by learning to read again

  • Choosing between 720p and 1080p on Mini connected to Sony HDTV (1920x1080)

I have a late 2009 Mac Mini and a SONY HDTV and had no difficulties at all in hooking them up. I just connected the Mini Display Port to DVI connector which ships with the MAC Mini to a Belkin DVI to HDMI cable (also available from Apple Store) and connected the HDMI to my TV. I switched on the TV, selected the correct HDMI input, then switched on the Mac Mini and could see the picture immediately. I was missing the menu bar at the top so went to SYSTEM PREFERENCES and then DISPLAYS and the OPTIONS tab, and unselected OVERSCAN, and that gave me a perfect picture (slightly smaller than full screen but perfectly adequate as far as I'm concerned).
By default my resoluton was set at 1080p (presumably the Mac detected that the native resolution of my TV is 1080p). The DISPLAYS box shows a number of resolution with a little TV screen icon beside them, as if suggesting those resolutions for use with the Sony. It shows 480i, 480p, 720p, 1080i and 1080p. There are also lots of others without TV icons beside them.
The only problem I found is that 1080p made it quite difficult to read text on my screen, even though it's not very far away from the sofa. My eyesight is very good but I couldn't read the screen comfortably when surfing the net or even when changing settings etc. I swiiched, therefore, to 720p and this produces a very comfortable size of text for using the MAC.
My question is whether it really makes such a big difference whether one chooses 720p or 1080p, as I really can't see much difference for playback of video from Hulu or other streaming websites. Even when I played a DVD movie from the Mac Mini superdrive, the difference in quality was hard to detect. I guess if I tried viewing Full 1080p HD material, there would be some difference, but how much of such material is available on the net anyway? I take it that switching between 720p and 1080p wouldn't cause any harm, if I chose to do so occasionally for watching any Full HD movies that I rip?
    Look forward to hearing views!

Hi- I also picked up a mini a week ago, and have it hooked up to my Sony HDTV via HDMI, just as you. The same thing happened the first time I connected the mini to my tv- with overscan on, the top and bottom of the screen were cut off.
The solution is to pick up your Sony remote, go to the onscreen menus, and make sure that 'full pixels' option is selected. When you do, the screen will be absolutely perfectly aligned.
I mention this because while in overscan mode, I find that the Sony makes an absolutely beautiful screen, and text is quite easy to read, albeit a bit small.

  • What is the Best Easy Setup options on FCE 4 for Sony DCR-VX2000E PAL?

Could someone please advise which options I should select in the easy set up box in Final Cut Express 4?
    Camera in use is:
    SONY DCR-VX2000E PAL.
There are a few different options... either DV PAL.. or DV PAL with various options next to it.. and i don't know what they all mean and which one applies to my camera.
I would like to select the best options in terms of playback quality once the edit is complete. I understand the export has a part to play at that point but i'm at the beginning and need to know what to select at this first hurdle...
PLEASE PLEASE could someone shed some light???
    thank you....

I have the same (fantastic) cam (from 2000 and use still the same batteries!) and use DV-pal DV Converter. Now it is also possible to capture direct from camera (thus no tape running!) that save time. In iMovie you can do the same but after ending the direct-capture, iMovie need a lot of time to make thumbnals. Or, when you pause for a while and want to go further you have to wait for very long if you direct recording/capturing was long too! Sometimes is that not possible!
    Succes!

  • Where is Easy Set-up Location?

Experimented with a project using a Sony VX2000 which is DV where audio was set at 32 kHz. Having trouble with audio drift capturing that DV from my DHR-1000 Deck. Made an Easy Set-up with 32kHz audio instead of standard 48kHz. Didn't help.
Now I want to delete that Easy Set-up. Can't find it. It is NOT under either:
    HD-->Library-->Application Support-->FCP System Support-->Custom Settings
    nor is it under
    User-->Library-->Application Support-->Final Cut Studio
I quit FCP and restarted, thinking that was what was needed. Didn't help.
    Thanks for any help.

    David,
Thanks for responding. Couldn't find it. Did a search for that folder also. No luck.
Guess not the end of the world, will just make me slower in trying different setups that I know I can't delete if don't work.
    Oh, well.
    Thanks for trying.

  • FCP 7 Captured/Imported letterbox footage incorrectly marked as Anamorphic

I recently installed FCP 7 and captured 24pA footage with the Easy Setup for 23.98 with Advanced Pulldown Removal. The footage was not shot anamorphic but was shot letterbox (on DVX100b). FCP batch captures the footage and I notice afterward that the anamorphic box checked on all the clips (and correspondingly visually distorted). I notice the same after I import 24pA footage (non-anamorphic) that I had already captured into new FCP project, also setup with the 24pA Easy Setup for Capture and Sequence.
This is fixable by unchecking the anamorphic column for each of the clips, of course, but it's tedious and shouldn't be happening i the first place.
Why is FCP 7 interpreting all new letterbox footage as anamorphic? I checked the settings for the Easy Setup and the box for anamorphic is NOT checked! I did not check non-letterboxed video. Also, the pixel aspect ratio. is set at CCIR601 on both the capture and sequence settings. Any ideas about the letterboxed video? Thanks.

I don't have an answer to your core question, but I own the DVX100B and shoot/capture at 24PA/advanced pulldown removal. However, I either shoot SD or I attach anamorphic lens adapter for 16:9.... have never tried using either Letterbox or Squeeze mode.
Reading through "The DVX Book" by Barry W. Green, he suggests that Letterbox mode is useful for simulating a wide screen look on a 4:3 TV screen, which is what you may be trying to achieve, but if your viewers are watching wide screen, you would get better looking results using the Squeeze mode.
My workflow is designed to create deliverables that are properly formatted for 16:9 flat screen displays because the majority of my clients and end users no longer own a CTR monitor or TV.

  • How to reset easy set up settings

How do I reset my easy set up settings so I can find a better way to capture footage from my Canon Vixia HV30 to FCE? I have been using 'Format - HD' and 'Use: HDV-Apple Intermediate Codec 1080i60' and I can import footage in that setup but I am looking for a better way which will allow me to use the Capture Window (it lists the Capture Bin/Reel/Name/Description/Scene/etc.) so I can label and organize my footage -- this Capture Window doesn't seem to be available by the aforementioned method -- so I want to try another method but to do that I have to reset my easy set up settings. Thanks for your help.

but it's the time duration between the 'in' and 'out' points (timecode?) that >I'm not sure about. Is this information essential for logging before I start >doing editing or does organizing essentials just consist of naming the file/bin >in the Tape # I am working on?
Are you in _List View_ in the Browser?
FCE does not allow for Timecode In/Out points to be added in Browser columns, we all face the same deal unless you move to FCP.
The Duration of the clip is however. If you cannot see the Duration Column right click in the any heading column except the Name column and it will bring up a list of all availble, you add or delete as required.
In List View the clips are added in linear time fashion the top one being first.
It's normal behaviour for HDV footage to be broken at the Camera start/stop points so you end up with a bunch of clips in the Browser knowing at least which came first and last if time is important to your Project.
