Easy way to adjust dialog levels?

Greetings fellow FCPers,
I mainly use FCP to edit picture & music. Today, I am working on a piece with sync dialog sent to me from all different sources, all levels of quality from poor to decent. It's for someone's birthday. Has someone come up with a "for idiots" solution, like apply one filter, and it goes through all the dialog track and tries to eqalize and adjust all the volume levels? It would be swell. Otherwise, I'll just tweak those little dots and lines by hand.

That said, I always find doing this manually is the best way. Remember that you can select a clip in the timeline, play that section of the timeline and hit ctrl+ and ctrl- to adjust audio levels by 1 db on the fly. This will only adjust the level of the entire clip in the timeline. Keyframing is often necessary within a clip.

I am working in Adobe Premiere CS6 and all of the audio is out of wack. Is there a way to adjust all of it at the same time to the same level or do I have to go clip by clip?

I had made Feature Requests to "gang" several Track sliders, like one can with a mixing board. However, the Sub-Mixes handles that nicely, as was pointed out to me by Adobe.

Is there an easier way to adjust volumes of tracks?

Easier than making control points with the automator? What I would like to do, if possible, is to adjust the volume with the slider as it plays. I can already do this while I am just listening to it, but I can not find a way to have it record or save my adjustments.
Basically I would like to automate the automator. If it could create a control point every second or so based on where the slider is which I am controlling with my mouse as the song plays, or something like that, that would be perfect.
I once created a little song like this by playing the song and adjusting the volume of a couple tracks as it played, while using audacity or something to record my song. I was hoping there was an easier way.

Easier way to set audio levels?

I found that various clips that I had cut together had WILDLY varying audio levels. At first, I tried to drag the volume meter for the audio track around, but that had no effect at all (kind of weird if you ask me). Then I discovered the "audio gain" feature, which does what I want. Sadly, it makes me enter a number, and that's largely a guessing game for me. Is there any way I can either get to visually decide how the audio wave should look like (roughly, of course) or simply tell Premiere Pro to "use the same level as this clip"?

Why don't you use some of the normalization features. You can right click and tell the audio files, select all of them at once, to normalize peaks to a certain level. Then all files are starting from roughly the same point. You can also use the volume handles on the clips to adjust their volume.

When we try to hit the System Monitor button, the Special Features button activates. It used to be that if you put your fingernail on the very bottom of the screen, you could activate the System Monitor button. It's a great printer, but this is frustrating.

It sounds like cleaning the touch panel might resolve the issue. Try powering the MF7480 off and cleaning it with a clean, dry, soft cloth. Be sure to get around the edges of the System Monitor button. If the Special Features button still activates, the MF7480 will likely require service. Is there a easy way to adjust the EQ?
Right now you have to go to the main menu > system > audio settings...
It would be great if I could adjust the EQ from the "Now Playing" pop up menu. Is this possible?

Well maybe a suggestion for future firmware revisions can be to customise the pop up menu in the "now planning" screen.
It would be handy if you could jump straight to the EQ or Play Mode menu while in the "now playing" screen.

In PSE9 is there a way to enlarge the levels adjustment panel and effects panel for viewing?

In PSE9 is there a way to enlarge the levels adjustment panel for viewing? The histogram is so small.
I know we can use the arrow keys to change the settings for the histogram, but it is just the overall view of it I would like to see bigger.
I think with PSE8 the effects panel could be dragged out of the panel bin and made longer AND wider, but in PSE9 it can only be made longer when dragged outside the panel bin.
And I think the whole panel bin could be dragged wider or narrower.

not really apart from changing the resolution, but theres a a couple of things you can do
you can change the "minimum font size" in Safari (and other apps) in the General tab - this will enlarge any fonts to the minimum size you specify if they are under that size
the features in the accessiblilty section of system preferences might be worth a look as well
the pinch zoom feature is also useful
unfortunately there isn't a 1-button setting somewhere that can do this, because apps, documents, web pages, images etc all work independently from each other, they use different font types, different zoom levels, etc. You can't just enlarge them all in sync without content getting jumbled up/distorted. if enlarge an app/page/document and get it looking good, on the next one you would probably need to zoom in at a different level for it to look right

HT5517 How can I adjust sound level when streaming radio from my Apple TV through Airplay speakers?

I have a 2nd Gen Apple TV with an airport express set up as airplay speakers. I can stream the new radio through using the Airplay speakers pretty well. The problem is that once I've got it going, I cannot adjust the sound level without laboriously backing out of the radio menu, going back to the top level menu then drilling down into the Airplay settings to raise or lower the speaker's sound level.
Is there an easier way to do this?

go to system preferences > Sound > Output. then change the output from "built-in" to HDMI.

Set the top layer so it's 50% transparent, then you can still see it but you can also see through it to be able to visually see when it's lined up.
You can move it around and rotate it with the Edit - Free Transform tool, and you can zoom in close while that tool is active by using the Ctrl + and Ctrl - keys to change the zoom. Get one point lined up, put the center of rotation (little crosshair) on that point, then rotate the image to line up with the other point.
Fine tuning can be done with the numeric values, available in the top part of the main Photoshop window when the Free Transform tool is active. Photoshop CS5 now allows you to specify an unprecedented level of accuracy. For example, 1/100th of a degree (or possibly smaller).

My question is this.
When creating a portfolio with thumbnails as buttons that change a larger image to what the thumbnail displays. Am I doing this right by creating several pages just to make an image appear for each individual image? Seems like allot to me and wondering if there is an easier way to accomplish this.
Also wondering if I should optimize the jpegs in Catalyst?

Pretty much, yes. Here are two ways to improve on your approach, however:
Place the thumbnails into a Data List. This makes it less work to edit things like item spacing/layout, or the selection highlight, since you don't have to do it once per thumbnail image. To display a different full-size image depending on which list item you clicked, create a series of "On Select" interactions using the "When a specific item is selected" option.
Put your image gallery into a custom component and have one state in the component for each image. This keeps your list of top-level application pages/states clean, so that if you later decide to add other screens such as contact info, info page, etc., they're not all mixed in alongside your image-specific states.

We here on the Catalyst team agree, and are looking into ways of making this simpler in a future version!

You should definitely optimize your images for the web by adjusting the resolution and compression settings. You can do this within Catalyst, or within the original tool that you used to create the jpegs (e.g. Photoshop's "Save for Web" command contains all the same optimization controls, and then some).

How do I shift clips and audio and adjust audio levels in CS5.5

OK, a couple of things.
I'm trying to shift everything over (this includes videos, some name supers, and unlinked audio) so I can insert some music here and there. I can drag the music on to Audio 2 or something, but I still want to scoot everything else over a couple of seconds. Is there an easier way to do this?
Secondly, I want to adjust the audio levels on the music. SO I want it to start off soft, grow louder, then back down until you don't even notice it. How would I do this? Thanks.

For the Nudging of multiple Assets, have you tried Selecting them all, and then using the Cursor Keys (arrows) to Nudge, one Frame at a time?
For the ramping up/down of the Audio Volumes, there are several ways to do that. Keyframing the Fixed Effect>Volume (in the Effects Control Panel) will allow one to adjust the Volume up/down over time. If you have never done Keyframing, then I would start with the Help File, as there are a lot of things to learn. Once, however, you have concepts and mechanics down, Keyframes are easy, and so very powerful. It can finish downloading and converting YouTube videos simultaneously in a few clicks. Besides YouTube, it can also deal with the video files from many other video sharing websites, like MySpace, Yahoo! Video, Google Video, Metacafe, Reuters, etc. Okay, let’s go back to the point to see how to use it to download and convert YouTube videos to MP3 on Mac in detailed steps.
Step 1: Add YouTube URL
Step 2: Select MP3 as output format
Copy and paste YouTube URL to the textbox after “URL”, meanwhile, if you want to save the original FLV YouTube videos, you can tick “Save FLV File”. Click the drop-down icon at the end of “Convert To” to select MP3 as output format. Furthermore, if you want to save the output MP3 file in your specified file name, you can type it into the textbox after “Save As”, and also, you can click “Browse” button to decide where to locate the output MP3 files.

I would think you would drop down the audio level lines in the "Stereo" tab (FCP 6.0.6 view to me) in the clip's video window.
But then again, in my old version, I can't play two clips at once. But I figure if the newer FCP allow you to do that, then that's what I would do.
