Easy Way to allow Mac Users to Access Windows Shares

I have a client that runs a mix of macs and pcs.
They have a seperate domain for macs running on an xserve with 10.2.8 server and a domain of windows 2000 servers for the pcs
My question is, is there an easy way to allow the mac users to be authenticated to shares that are available on the windows 2000 network without having to be prompted with a different login? ie access the shares with there current mac login username and password?

If your mac clients can 'see' the windows domain then simply add a single generic user account on the Windows Server. Most people create a single account called macuser with the same password.
Mac clients should now be able to command+K from the Go Menu and key in smb://windowserver'sIPaddress. They should be prompted for the user name and password.
If you want to use the same account details as available on the Mac Server then you could export users from the local Node and import them into the Windows Server. Passwords are not retained using this method but if you don't have a lot of mac users you can simply re-key their passwords or use a password common to all and use a password policy forcing users to change them at next log-in. You could consider using something like Passenger which does retain passwords. Depending on which Windows Server it is I'm not sure how successful it would be reading imported account from such an old server version?
Again if you don't have a lot of mac users simply key them all in.

Ditto. Guest accounts shouldn't have a password. No way to enter one in System Prefs...

Way to allow the user access to the saved lists of this Z report

We have a Z report that we want to run at midnight each Sunday and then view the output/layout first thing Monday morning. We can schedule the report to run but it appears that the only way we can save the output as a 'file' for later viewing is by using the "Save with ID" option, which puts the output into a SAP 'saved list'.
The problem with this is that it doesn't appear to be possible to access that list from the Z-report - it would appear that you have to go into SQ01 and use the 'saved list' button. This means giving the Z- report user access to SQ01 as well as Z-report, which, for security (SOD) reasons we don't want to do.
We can run the report in foreground with the output option "File store" and save the output as a file to a specified location,. But this option doesn't appear to be available when the report is scheduled as a background job. If this is done, the background job runs but there's no output anywhere, as far as we can tell.
So what want is to run the report in background but with the output option 'File store' or equivalent (i.e. an output stored somewhere that the report user can view). Is this not possible, or have we missed something in setting up the report run?
Or is there a way to allow the user access to the saved lists of this Z report without giving them T-code SQ01?

no need to copy it as a 'Z-report' (or as a custom report). In fact,
everytime you're copying an infoset query to a report, you're calling
for problems the next time you face an upgrade. (That is because SAP
changes the internal logic used to handle the infosets queries from
version to version)
We're using some infoset queries and they work fine this way.

still getting used to the Mac feel, after switching over from Windows, and I have a question that I can't seem to find an answer to.
I have the following issue:
Under my account, I have all our family photos and documents. I have also set up a user account for my wife. When she logs on, she can't access our photos, etc., because she has no read/write rights. (Which is logic, since they are my "private" folders.
I have then logged on myself, used the "info" button on the respective folders in order to give her user the rights to access my folders, but I can't seem to "allow everyone" to access the folder(s). What are the settings I need to use?

I have tried to recreate this myself, and your right even after changing ownerships and movie the iPhoto library to the public folder ( Harddrive/Users/Sharing) the second account is still not allowed to access the library. This is strange behaviour because moving the iTunes Music Library to Sharing does allow all users to access the library.
All I can suggest is that you deselect the option in iPhoto preferences (Advanced) to "copy files to iPhoto library" then store your photos in a folder that resides in the Harddrive/Users/Sharing folder - then your wife can use the import command to add them to her copy of iPhoto (she should also deselect the copy to library option)

I recently swapped to Mac and this is how i moved the library from windows to mac and library is in tact but is there an easier way? My cousin just imported her cd's again, but it was harder for me as i have an ipod with over 150 apps and i needed to move them. i think it would be helpful if i knew of an easier way so i can help a friend move his. The general method of use is to download a script (double-click or right-click and use Download or Save As...) to a folder of your choice, e.g. your Desktop, Downloads folder or create a folder at ...\iTunes\Scripts. Select a playlist or highlight some tracks in iTunes and then double-click on the script to execute it. If no specific tracks are selected the script will try to work with all tracks in the current playlist or sometimes the entire library.

So, what I have done so far to try to achieve this is:
I have my Windows PC with it's NTFS formatted external HDD containing the music etc.
I have my Mac with a new external HDD formatted in Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
On the Windows PC:
* I opened up iTunes.
* Went into Preferences, and then under the Advanced tab I checked both 'Keep iTunes Media Folder Organised' and 'Copy files to iTunes Media folder when adding to library', so that all the files would be in the main iTunes Media folder when I copy it over.
* Then File, Library, Organise Library and ticked the 'Consolidate Files' so that it moves any files that aren't in the right folder.
Next I copied the files over. So I copied the updated media folder from the NTFS (Windows) external HDD onto the Mac external HDD.
And I copied the files from in My Documents/Music/iTunes on the Windows PC to User/Music on the Mac.
But this doesn't seem to have done it.

How Mac User Can Learn Windows XP????

I am and will continue to be a big Apple fan (see my history below) -- but since I can't sit around any longer waiting for a Mac netbook, I broke down and bought the new 10.1-inch Acer Aspire that comes with Windows XP Home Edition. Since I've never used anything but a Mac before,am hoping someone can suggest a resource that can, in very simple terms, help me learn how to do the basics in Windows Xp Home, like create documents, etc. Ideally, if there's a document called something like, "A Mac Users Guide to Window XP Home Edition," that'd be fabulous.

And I'm not trying to be funny, but I'm thinking you aren't going to like the transition. I've been on macs for about 8 years solid but have a good windows knowledge. Now when I go back to a Windows PC (by necessity) it is nothing short of frustrating. You might discover, things don't work as the should or as logic would have them..... something to not take for granted using Macs.
I no longer have the patience to touch Windows. Sorry, but I'm just telling it like it is. Windows just feels like it's put together by high-schoolers (displaced from the 80's).

How can I easily set up Mac lab to access windows 2008 server directory user files?

I am wanting to start shifting our school to Apple computers. The problem is that we have already invested significant time and money into windows and we need to run them side-by-side. My initial plan would be to set up an open lab of computers with no users but have some way of allowing students to save their files to a windows directory which would in turn allow them to access the same files from a windows computer. I hope this makes sense and is not an entirely stupid or basic question.
I have logged into my personal directory on our server by hitting Command K and then putting in my user and password. What I would like is to have one item to appear in the shared directory and when selected for it to ask for user and password and go a the required directory.
If anybody has any information that may support the process of the intergration of Pc to Mac for a super low level IT skilled teacher I would greatly appreciate it.

the easiest is to enable fast user switching system preferences-.accounts and require password to wake from sleep in system preferences->security. This way when computer wakes from sleep it gives a password screen with an option to go to login window and switch user.

How do I allow other users limited access to iPhoto?

I am seeking to create other user accounts for my Mac that will allow my wife and my 8 year old to view photos in iPhoto but will not allow them to screw it up (i.e., will not allow them to edit or delete any photos, etc.). Is there a way that I can give them access to view only? Thanks.

When you share a Photo Stream and invite a family member to view it, the family member will see the photo stream in the iPhoto Library, in the iCloud section: It will look like regular albums.

Is there a way to allow contributor users to add web parts to a page without granting them "Add and Customize Pages" permission?

I am working on an enterprise wiki site collection, and when contributor users try to add web parts they will get the following error:-
A Web Part or Web Form Control on this Page cannot be displayed or imported. You don't have Add and Customize Pages permissions required to perform this action.
So I granted the Contribute Permission level an extra permission which is “Add and Customize Pages”. Now contributors will be able to add/edit/delete
web parts. But they will have extra permissions that I do not want them to have , such as changing the design and customize some page layouts, also they can access the site settings and create site columns !!.
So my question is basically if there is another way to allow users with contribute permission to be able to add web parts without granting any extra permission. In other words to treat adding web parts as normal content such as image, Text ,tables ?

so there are not any workarounds or any custom settings which i can use to implement any of these:-
- To force Contributor users to add web parts without granting them "Add and Customize Pages"
- If i grant them "Add and customize Pages" permission, to stop the ability to access the site settings ?
Please can any one advice on this , as it is causing a lot of confusion,,, and i can not live with the face that Contributor users can access and modify site settings. the other approach will be is that i will stop using web parts. but one of our main reasons
we decide to use SharePoint is the ability to add web parts, especially the Visio & Excel web access web. thanks in advance for any advice ..

In ACS 5.1 is there a way to show what users have access to a firewall?

I have an auditor wanting a screenshot of all users that have acces to configure our firewall, I am unfamiliar with 5.1. Is there a way of running such a report on a paticular device?

There is not report you can run in order to show which users have access to which devices, your best bet is to take a screenshot of your authorization policy which shows the permissions. Then take a screenshot of all the users that are present in the user groups, and then another screenshot the network device group of the firewalls.

I dosent want allways mount sambashares as root with root:root writes.
I need samba mount as user i try set the suid bit on smbmount but doesent works right.

libsmb based programs must *NOT* be setuid root.

i know fstab is a way but i dont want use it, only if no other solution.

UI design - what is the best way to allow the user to set some kind of infusion at varying (non periodic) times?

I want to allow the user to specify a curve like this:
Such that some subVI outputs the value A2 when a time variable is within the range R1, A1 when the time variable is within the range R2, and A3 when the time is within the range R3.

My question is, is the array based approach optimal? How else could I tackle this?

I think I can summarize the conversation to this point as an answer to the original question (What is the best way ...) -- before starting to write any code, think carefully about what you want to accomplish, and write it down (otherwise known as "Write the Documentation First"). One of the points of a good User Interface is that it doesn't allow users to "make silly mistakes" -- it leads the user "by the hand", restricting the entries to "legal values" and requiring that entries be made in a logical manner.
So if you were going to have a list of Infusions to enter, it makes sense to decide on whether to enter Time Intervals (which are always >0) or Times (which, logically) are always in ascending order. You can (and should) decide which you want (or you could have a control that would let the User decide, but that might be too flexible) and then enforce your "rules".
Suppose you decided on "Intervals" (which seems, to me, to be more User Friendly). After the User has entered the intervals (and you've provided a nice plot of Infusion vs Time), you could allow the User to "split" an Interval, "Remove" an Interval, or "Edit the Infusion" of an Interval, or you could decide to have a simpler "Accept or Start Over" choice -- if you only have a few intervals, the last might be the simplest (and thus the Best) Design Choice.

sorry if i'm posting this in the wrong category, but it seemed like the most related one i could find. is there any software available that will allow myspace users to post comments to all their friends at one time? i know these programs exist for pc's, but i haven't found one yet for macs. i manage a page for a group i'm in, and this software would be really helpful. please note - i'm not interested in using the myspace blog feature, bulletins or anything else to pass along the information we need to post. i want to be able to use the comment feature, but i don't want to have to do each one individually as myspace currently demands. thanks so much for your help and time!

New Mac user, need help accessing windows shares

I have a new MBP 13" and want to be able to easly access shared folder on my PC network. None of the PC's appear under the 'Shared' left menu in the finder, not even my aging eMac.
I have successfully used connect to server and smb the pc name, but this seems to wok once, then when I go to reuse it, i can not access it again. deleting the save server favourite and rebooting works occasionally, however for the most part it is bery hit and miss. My thoery is that if you can access it once, you should be able to again and again.
Obviously none of my pc's have any issues accessing the shares, it is just the mac . I have input the windows workgroup in the WINS section of Network Settings as well as my router ip address.
Can anyone advise how to get the pc's to appear under the shared tab in the finder.
At the moment, I am starting to regret buying the Macbook Pro, and really thought this type of issue would have been sorted out on the Mac side by now. But alas, it seems that I will just use windows 7 on the macbook pro until I can get this sorted. I can't not have access to windows data stores.
Any help will be appreciated. I have tried to resolve this by viewing similar threads, but have not found a reliable solution yet.
