Easy website address on iweb?

How can I give my website a streamlined address instead of the long, convoluted one that shows up on the browser when I get to my site? The long one is too complex to use on a business card or to share with others.

What shows up on the browser is often much more than your real address. Try just
web.mac.com/username

  • Website Address??

I am publishing my website designed in iWeb but it is being published to an external host. I already have a website and the version in iWeb will replace my old site but this doesn't appear to have happened. My 'old' site is http://www.minstergate-weimaraners.org.uk but when I published the iWeb site the address has come up as http://www.minstergate-weimaraners.org.uk/Minstergate/Welcome.html
Please can someone help me make the mac website use my original web address?
    Thank you

Dreamweaver and iWeb. It's a world apart and still too complex.
    Read this :
         The concept of iWeb Sites
A Site, which is just a folder, is a convenient way to organize your pages based on topic, subject or whatever you choose to keep relevant pages together. I’ve been doing that for the past 17 years, and I find it rather natural.
But since iWeb is doing it, it seems to confuse & frustrate people. iWeb shouldn’t do it, they say. As if there is a law that demands it.
To avoid the Sitename in the URL, read my solution. It's very technical but in the end it saves time. And best of all, iWeb is not involved :
Avoiding the iWeb Sitename in the URL
An easier, time-wasting, solution is to publish to a folder on your desktop.
Open that Site folder and move the content of that folder to the root of the webserver with a FTP application.
(The root of a webserver is where the file or folder, shown immediately to the righthand side of the domainname, is stored.)
Everytime you make changes to a page, you have to repeat these steps.
But the result is what you want.
And here's a re-post with some additional info about using an index.php file to avoid overwriting the index.html file iWeb creates :
Avoiding the iWeb Sitename in the URL
Works on all servers. With or without a subdomain I may add. Like this one :
         http://wyodor.byethost8.com/htdocs/index.html
Not as easy as publishing to a folder, but in the end it saves time. Again.

Can someone please tell me how I can get rid of /file/home.html  This is on the end of my website address on my URL.

So the "problem" is not new.

  • Using my existing domain name to refer to a .Mac website created with iWeb

How do I have my domain name connect to my .Mac website address, without using a slow redirect?

The place where you got your domain name should be able to tell you how to forward to your web.mac.com url. Nothing to do with Apple or iWeb really.

  • How do I shorten my .mac website address?

    Hi all,
Right now my .mac website address is: http://web.me.com/ocicatgraphics/OcicatGraphics/OcicatGraphics.html
It's too long... Is there anyway to shorten it? You know so it might be easier to remember and fit on a business card?
    Thanks in advance.
    PA

All you need to enter is http://web.me.com/ocicatgraphics/ to get to your site.
If you're referring to what is shown in the URL window you can purchase a domain name, something like ocicatgraphics.com or ocicatgraphics.info (GoDaddy has a special on the .info - $0.99 the first year, $9.99 per year thereafter and that includes domain name forwarding and masking. Then all you would enter in the browser window is your domain name and that's all you'd see in the URL window when you got to your site. Like my toadstutorials.info site.

  • Website address changes

This has happened a couple of times. I work on something or try to add new sites or whatever-- save & publish. Later, friends and family say they can't acccess the link I previously sent them. When I go check, iweb has renamed my site something else and added many % symbols and extra words. Then I have to email my address book with the new link. What a pain? How do I go back to my original website address?
Sorry if this is too confusing to understand. I hardly understand my own question!

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Those % symbols are what iWeb puts in place of spaces or other punctuation marks. Here's an excerpt from iWeb's Help file regarding characters to be or not to be used in web site names:
"Browsers convert spaces in site names to "%20." To avoid these symbols, use an underscore, hyphen, or some other character instead of a space. Also avoid non-Roman characters; many get converted to numbers when you publish.
Other characters aren't recommended for use in website names, including: forward and backward slashes (/ \), brackets ([ ]), tilde (~), exclamation point - !, question mark (?), "at" sign (@), number sign (#), dollar sign ($), ampersand (&), asterisk (*), colon (:), equal sign (=), comma (,), and double quotation marks ("). Using these characters may result in names with strange numbers in them.Browsers convert spaces in site names to "%20." To avoid these symbols, use an underscore, hyphen, or some other character instead of a space. Also avoid non-Roman characters; many get converted to numbers when you publish."
It's best to keep the site and page names without spaces and other punctuation marks.

  • Modification to a WebSite by using IWeb

Hope somebody will be able to help me. I have to modify information on a website. My question, how to do the modifications by using Iweb. Thank you.

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Was the website created with iWeb. If not then there's no way to make modifications to it.
If iWeb was used to create the web site then you should be able to launch iWeb, make the changes and publish them.

  • When I am NOT private browsing Firefox will not allow me to delete or change the website address in the location bar. My only remedy is to open a new window and search in google then click the link to that site through google. How can I resolve this?

    Question
When I am NOT private browsing Firefox will not allow me to delete or change the website address in the location bar. My only remedy is to open a new window and search in google then click the link to that site through google. When I swap to private browsing firefox allows me to anter the website address directly into the location bar - but this is a slow [prcess to swap back and forth - also by dint of using private browsing I loose my website information.

Start Firefox in <u>[[Safe Mode]]</u> to check if one of the extensions is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox (Tools) > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).

  • How can i delete a website made in iWeb from MobileMe but not from iWeb

The problem is that I have made changes to several pages (almost all of them) on my site and since the changes my site no longer displays correctly in Internet Explorer.
I have looked in the IE CSS file and the CSS file for IE is completely messed up and would take a long time to correct by correcting the code for every page, so I decided just to delete the whole site from MobileMe and then republish it as a new site, rather then as an altered site.
The problem is I don't want to delete the site from iWeb, because it has took me months to build it and I don't want to have to start again. I just want to delete the site from MobileMe, so I can republish it as a new site (and hopefully correct the screwed up code).
So how can I delete a website created in iWeb and published on MobileMe from MobileMe without deleting it from iWeb.
    Huge thanks
    Jay

Hey thanks for your reply, unfortunately I have already tried to delete my site from iDisk >> Web >> Sites. But it said that i didn't have permission and it wouldn't delete the files.
I am loged in as an Admin and I still cant delete them
    Thanks again

You need the Domain.sites2 file that's located in your Users/Home/Library/Application Support/iWeb folder in order to be able to manage and publish the site from another computer?
Do you have that file? If you do copy it to the same folder on the other computer and you're ready to go.
If not then you'll have to recreate the site from scratch.  Chapter 2.3 on the iWeb FAQ.org site has tips on using some of the existing files, image, audio, video, etc., from the published site in the recreation of the site. 1

  • I am wanting to publish a website created in iweb via a third party web host. How do I put a password for anyone wishing to visit the mysite?

I am wanting to publish a website created in iweb via a third party web host. How do I put a password for anyone wishing to visit the mysite?

You create the usernames and passwords where you host your website. Made with or without iWeb.
Usually it's done in the controlpanel where you manage your account.
If you cannot do it there, you'll have to do it yourself. See this post :
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/16014940#16014940
And what is the purpose of password protection for ANYONE who vistis your site?

  • Website address field doesn't display in safari

I was in safari and I downloaded a pdf file and then worked on this file.  When I went back to safari, the website address bar and google search bar no longer appeared.  I can open up new windows by selecting the tab + but I cannot enter in a website address because there is no place to type it.  If that makes sense.

Choose Show Toolbar or Customize Toolbar from the View menu and put it back.
