Easy Windows Share Connecting

Hello forums!
I have recently convinced our "hardware guy" at work to buy a new MacBook for work use. He had been interested in trying out OS X for a while and when the opportunity came up to get one, he jumped at it. I am sorry to say that he is less than thrilled with the level of control that he has over the operating system and is less than flexible in learning new ways of doing things. One of the ways that he is used to connecting to Windows shares is by opening a new Explorer window and just typing "\\NameOfShare\SharedVolume". He knows that he can browse through the network, but REALLY wants a way to quickly and easily open up a share. Does anyone know of any apps out there that will accomplish something similar, possibly even allowing a Windows convert to type "\\NameOfShare\SharedVolume"?
Thanks in advance!
15" PowerBook G4 1.25GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.5)   3 years old and still going strong!

From the Finder, choose Go, Connect to Server. In the Server Address: space type in:
smb://NameOfShare/SharedVolume
Note forward slashes, not backslashes. In *nix variants backslash is an escape character. Type in your password, and the share will be mounted on the desktop.

  • How do I add Macbook air to my windows network and how do I connect to windows shares from said Macbook?

Finally, I have a "clued in" boss who wanted a Macbook air.  I have it, and I can get to the internet by supplying the correct proxy credentials.  My issue is trying to connect him to windows shares on my network?  I know how to do this cold for adding a PC, But need some 101 on how to take this awesome macbook air and add it to the domain and how to get connected to various shares within my DOMAIN.  as well as use network printers (I assume that is pretty easy). . .  I should add that I can ping the servers in question, I am just not familiar with how to connect to them via Mac. . .I am sure this is laughably easy, I am the king of making things difficult, I swear!
Thanks for any and all help as usual!!

  • Can no Longer See Windows Shares

My network has always connected no problem. Suddenly today I can no longer see the computers on my LAN. These are all windows shares. All I see are two alias' Llbrary and Servers. Mail and internet operates normally both by ethernet and wireless. I've tried everything I can think of. I managed one time to bring up a folder Workgroups but I have lost that too. I think that folder is usually empty though. I was told there was a short power outage which required a reboot of the servers but that is not unusual. Windows client on the network continue to see each other. Any ideas?

    Tom,
you have accidentally posted in the iPhone forum. You might want to try re-posting in the MacBook forum.

  • SOLVED--"object no longer exists" for Windows shares

If you can see a Windows share in the Finder but can't connect to it, or get the error that says the object doesn't exist, I think I've found the answer. I was trying to mount a connected Western Digital USB drive which was shared from a Windows XP machine. It was seen correctly in Finder, but I could never actually connect to it. It wasn't until recently that I discovered that I was also having a problem connecting to it from another Windows machine, and that led me to find this solution.
    http://winhlp.com/node/40
If you still have the error after rebooting your Windows machine where the share resides, increase the value of 15, then reboot. I had to go to 25 to make everything work.

I guess, if you do any DDL on EMP, you may loose all the grants, you may need to regarnt permission again.

  • Windows shares discoverability no longer working

I never used to have a problem with this in Leopard. Windows shares always appeared in the Shared section of finder just fine.
But a few months ago they just stopped appearing, and not just on one mac, I have an iMac Core Duo and an iBook G4 and they have stopped appearing on both. The 3 windows machines see each other just fine.
I've tried restoring my router to factory defaults, that hasn't helped, so I've ruled that out. The only thing I can imagine is that a software update some months ago has broken it.
I've been experimenting and have found that if I change the workgroup name on one of the macs and one of the windows machines they start to see each other again. But after an hour or so the windows share will disappear again. And rebooting both machines will not get it back, I have to rename the workgroup again. It's mental!
Using the ip addresses in connect to server works just fine, it's only the discovering of netbios names that is broken. Also, the windows machines can see the macs just fine.
    What is going on?

I have the same exact problem. Only thing I've found that makes it tolerable is I created an alias of the shared windows folder so I don't have to use the IP address every time I want to connect to it, I just click on the alias from my mac and it will automatically mount the shared volume.
Still, I'd love to figure out why it won't list it under the shared section of the sidebar like it used to...

  • Windows Shares Not Showing Up In Finder (Master Browser Problem)

Hi, on leopard I had no problems with Windows shares showing up in finder. However, having upgraded to Snow Leopard, I've now lost that ability.
Before I had my Leopard computer set as the master browser. I did this by specifying domain master = yes and preferred master = yes in my smb.conf. However despite importing these settings into Snow Leopard's smb.conf, it is not acting as a master browser.
When I run the command "nmblookup -M -- -" which in Leopard returned my Mac as the master browser, now it says "failed to find name _MSBROWSE_#01".
I'm sure this is why the Windows PC is not showing up in finder, but I don't know why the smb-conf isn't taking effect in Snow Leopard, and setting it as the master browser?
Also, I can use Go -> Connect to access my Windows shares, and Mac shares show up in Vista okay.
    Any help appreciated.

Problem fixed upon updating to 10.6.2.

  • Problem with file permissions in Windows shares

Due to a company merger we are now supporting a group of Macs in our PC environment. These Macs connect to our Windows shares. This generally works well, however we have discovered a problem. It’s to do with the way our Macs interact with our Windows shares. When they copy a file to a windows share they take the permissions for the file they copy from the route of the share rather than from the subfolder the files are copied to and write the file permissions accordingly.
This only affects admin users who use Macs with the ability to change file permissions. Everyone else inherits the permissions from the subfolder as they should because their account can’t change the permissions. If the route and subfolder permissions are the same then there is no change. If they are different, the Mac will use the share route permissions as preference.
We have shares where users don’t have access to the route folder but do have access to other folders. This is so that they can’t change the top level folder structure. However they are able to create folders and files under the top level folders. If an administrator uses a Mac, no one has access to any files or folders they create because users don’t have access to the route folder and this is copied to the files and folders they create. This doesn’t affect our PC’s only the Macs.
We are using the latest Mac OS fully updated and Windows 2008 server. Is this a normal Mac ‘Feature’? Is there a work around?

I’m a bit disappointed by the lack of response to my problem. As Windows is the predominant file server in business, this problem must have occurred before.
Are Mac people really saying that Macs are not designed to connect to networks? At the moment our Macs are unusable apart from a few isolated tasks. Basically they are used by a few designers who work in isolation. If PC’s had this problem no one would buy them.

  • Windows shares not displaying in Sidebar

    Hi
I have a iMac and a Windows Vista Laptop with File sharing enabled , The Windows Laptop can see the iMac in the Network folder and can copy and access files etc
The Windows share does not show up in the Finder Sidebar, although if i connect to server and enter the IP address of the Windows Laptop it shows up in the Sidebar with the IP address as the heading , I can then mount and access shared folders on the PC
Does anyone know how i can make the Windows share appear automatically in the Sidebar. Tech support have not been able to help yet

Perhaps [this thread|http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=8772053] or [this thread|http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=8436383] will assist. Seem to be similar. Otherwise search for windows vista share sidebar and you'll find lots of hits.
Have you tried to turn off the firewall and see if it works (not ideal of course).

  • Expdp fails with error ORA-39006: internal error writing on a windows share

    Hi!
I need to get the following configuration working:
Linux Server (CentOS 5 32 bits) with Oracle 11.2.0.1.0
    Windows Server 2003 SP2 32 bits.
On the windows server I have created a user called oracle, who is member of oinstall and dba groups. (On Linux username, and group membership is the same).
After that, I share a directory on D:\data_pump (I gave the full control of directory to oracle user). I mount the windows share on my linux as follows:
    mount -t cifs //winserver/data_pump /u04/oradata/data_pump -o user=oracle,password="pass",uid=oracle,gid=oinstall
As the linux oracle user I'm capable of create and edit files, but:
I connect to my database, create the directory called DATA_PUMP pointing to my cifs mount point, and, after that, I issue the following expdp sentence:
    expdp system DIRECTORY=DATA_PUMP DUMPFILE=test4.dmp LOGFILE=test4.log FULL=yes
And I get the following error:
    ORA-39006: internal error
Looking at expdp log I found the following information:
ORA-39097: Data Pump job encountered unexpected error -31643
ORA-39065: unexpected master process exception in FILE
ORA-31643: unable to close dump file "/u04/oradata/data_pump/gaston4.dmp"

ORA-27045: unable to close the file
    Linux Error: 5: Input/output error
    Additional information: 4
    Do you have any suggestions?

  • Windows shares - content not appearing in Finder, potential workaround

After upgrading to Lion I'm having problems seeing shared Windows drives.
    - Connecting as normal (apple - K) mounts the root directory as expected.
    - I can navigate to a child directory, but can't see the contents of that child directory in the Finder
    - However, I can see it if I navigate to it via the Terminal...
In addition, if I navigate to the child directory via the Terminal and issue "open ." a Finder window opens revealing the files. I can then go 'up' a directory to the parent and see the full listing that was not being shown before!
Obviously this is some sort of bug? I am alone in experiencing this?

Well I have no issue with seeing Windows shares on Win 2008 cluster servers and my wifes XP SP3 Dell. Lion does seem to take longer than SL in showing the content of some folders when first opening, but I would say that once the index for the content is complete then there is no delay from then on.

  • Slow Folder View When Mounting to Windows Share

I'm an intern at an educational institute and we have a graphics lab that has access to a large windows share. They use the share for storing large picture files primarily. Only individuals in certain classes have access to the drive and each student has their individual folder. Graphics shares this share with cad students so the share is called CADShare
On a windows machine when the student connects the only folder that is seen is their own which is folder name = 'firstname.lastname'
On a mac it seems to load every students folder within the share (around 400 students maybe?) and then pull every folder that it populated until the only one seen is the one you have permissions to. It will behave slightly different depending on the folder view.
If the folder is being viewed in list or detail view it will populate/unpopulate instantly and will cause the machine to 'hang' while it's doing this. But if the folder is in folder view it will only populate the full amount of folders. If you click on a folder that is supposed to be hidden it will then unpopulate that folder.
This is becoming an issue for students trying to save and access files in Adobe cs2 but it seems to be more of a problem with the finder than it is with Adobe.
Is there a way to change view settings to be more friendly to windows shares for it not to lag this much when viewing or has anyone seen anything like this?
Any thoughts or solutions would be helpful :]

We've tried something similar to that, they actually connect using afp rather than smb?
    But we've tried connecting:
    afp://server/CADShare/firstname.lastname/
    and
    afp://server/CADShare/firstname.lastname/
It seems to connect to their share directly but it still mounts CADShare so when students browse for files through an application, for example the graphics students are using the "place" command, they experience that lag because of the volume of folders.
It seems like it might just be something our network guy should handle by either making each students folder an individual share or nesting the folders by class or instructor.
Thanks so far though, any other ideas?

  • File Adapter (UNIX) to Windows Share

    Hi,
I am still quite confused how SAP can call this a File Adapter until it is not possible to use the most common transfer method: UNC Paths
When I start thinking about this I am getting sick, but ok.
So I want to send a file from anywere to a Windows Share, which in general should not be that difficult. Again, this is one of the most used scenarios and this is not supported by SAP because my XI is on Unix. The possible solutions I found are:
    1) Samba
    2) Mount
    3) FTP Adapter
For me Mount is no possible because I do have a WAN in between and this connection would be too vulnerable, FTP not as well because there is no FTP Server where I want to go.
Does anyone of you use a script called from the file adapter which transfers the file via Samba? Any experience with that?
    BR Markus

You can as well use a J2SE adapter to perform the requirement using XI. I am not sure if you have tried that option.
