Easyfind for 10.4.11

Hi everybody,
I haven't been here for a while (since this new set-up began)... and I'm still happily using 10.4.11 !
But something has bugged my Easyfind app.
Can anyone tell me where I can find a fresh Easyfind download for 10.4.11 ?
Thanks
Prof

  • Find in Open/Save Dialog boxes

The find in open/save dialog boxes seems to return unexpected results. Say I have two folders one called "Down under" and the other called "Down under 2". If I ask it to find "down" it only returns the file "Down under 2" and other files whose content may have the word "down" in them. The folder "Down under 2" only has jpegs in it. None have "Down" in the file name.
    So what gives?

Surely someone knows what is going on in spotlight. If I use Easyfind for the search it comes up with both files folders correctly.

  • Reinstalling OS 10.4

    Hello fellow Mac users,
For various reasons, I've had to reinstall OS a couple of times and since I then have these files on my hard disk:
    OSinstall.mpkg.104aTsLc8
    OSinstall.mpkg.94HSIY41
    OSinstall.mpkg.2063RuAM4
Anybody know what this is? Can I safely delete these files?
Thanks in advance for your help.

FWIW I just ran a check on five OS X installs and searched with EasyFind for files or folders and package contents, visible or invisible with "OSinstall" in the name and came up empty on every system. Searching for ".installplan" again found nothing.
I agree with you that these are remnants of an installation, but my question is why weren't they deleted by the installer which, if my results are any guide, is the norm? By any chance were your Tiger reinstalls archive and installs?

  • Can I partially change appearance on a file name?

I´m working with a big company that has quite a few articles that I´m making individual originals for. Since the customer always refers to the products by name, I need to start the file names with the description. At the end of the file name I add the serial number for my business system.
When i browse the windows the article numbers is hard to see because the file names are individual in lenght, and is not in a numerical sequence (alphabetical sorting) Is there any way to colorize or make just the numbers bold in the file name? Or does anyone have another idea of what to do?

Finder uses a volume's  Spotlight index for its searches, and Spotlight won't create such an index on a Windows server. EasyFind is slower, but I think it still works remotely.
I tried creating a local file named "testfile98765.txt", and then searched in EasyFind for *98765* after choosing "Unix-Wildcards" as the search operator (an asterisk matches anything). EasyFind found the file, which I could then either double-click to open directly from EasyFind, or else use ctrl-click>Reveal in Finder.

  • Iwork isn't installing

i'm new to this apple computer, i got it from a friend.
i'm trying to install iwork and trying to connect to my app store. it keeps wanting me to put my bank details in so i do that and apparently i needed to make a payment and that it's failed. what do i do.

iwork '09 will not remove '08. You will need to do that manually. There are pieces/parts in applications; home/library/application support; library/receipts; library/application support and perhaps some others.
I would suggest first saving any custom templates you use. Templates are in user/application support/iwork. Save them to your desktop. Then download easyfind from www.devon-technologies.com (under downloads at the bottom of the page under freeware). Then do a search in easyfind for iwork and delete folders and files that it locates. Then install '09. You should be good to go.

  • Computer won't automatically sleep

For the past 8 years none of my computers will sleep. OSX Panther and on up through the upgrades on TiBooks MacBooks, MacBook Pro, iMacs. I can't remember what software or upgrade it started with though. And I had a heck of a time removing Norton and all the little secret files it hides. But I think I've got them all. Had to use EasyFind for that round of searching.
Laptops will sleep if the cover is closed. All computers will sleep when using the Apple command.
I've used about a dozen HDs, internal, external, Seagate, WD, Maxtor and others as boot discs.
A few years ago Apple support took me though the delete prefs re-install one by one, and many other tries and fixes. Most resulted in disaster.
Re-installing the system in all the ways possible except the one by one approach were I loose all my settings for iPhoto, iTunes and others. I can't afford to loose the many settings. It is better to live with the problem.
This will likely be a long discussion as things I've tried are re-advised to me. I know how to set the energy saver Prefs.
I never use terminal commands, too many disasters nearly every time I follow Apple advice including copy paste the command string.
Its not a big issue to me but still annoying so I thought I see what the latest suggestions might be. It does sleep if I reboot and don't sign in. Booting into safe mode works as long as I don't sign in. When I sign in in safe mode the system hangs... forever requiring a hard shutdown or restart.
I am hoping some suggestion will be put forward that I haven't tried.

Normally a simple SMC reset would correct this problem assuming your System Preferences are defined correctly.  Are these machines running with external drives or other items connected to the computers?  Hard to think of what is common on 20 systems over 8 years.  If you can do a complete backup, I’d certainly try wiping the internal drive, re-installing the OS, add all OS and firmware updates, verify it sleeps properly, then slowly add things to the system.  You may be right, it’s better to live with the problem, but it is bothering you.
You should be able to restore user settings but I’d be suspicious of everything and rebuild.  I’ve done that and copied down various network related items on a piece of paper to input them again because who can recall all port mappings, for example?

  • Is Indexing HD a good Idea?

I use PowerPC G4; run OS X 10.5.8 Leopard.  I just installed a new Hard Drive.  It is a good idea to index the new HD?  How would you go about starting an indexing session?

You may me interested in Find Any File from: http://apps.tempel.org/FindAnyFile/
Find Any File is a program for Mac OS X that lets you search for files on your disks.
Contrary to Spotlight, it does not use a database but instead uses the file system driver's fast search operations, where available. This lets you search for file properties such as name, dates, size, etc, but not for file content (use Spotlight or EasyFind for that).
Find Any File can find files that Spotlight doesn't, e.g. those inside bundles and packages and in inside folders that are usually excluded from Spotlight search.
Finally, it is quite fast. A search only takes a few seconds on an internal hard disk or SSD. Try for yourself!
Find Any File doesn't replace Spotlight, but it complements it greatly:
If you search for content, such as in e-Mails, PDFs, Word docs etc., use Spotlight.
If you search for files by name, size or date, use FAF, as only then you can be sure that everything available is found.

  • Just bought iWork 09.  what to do with 08?

    Hi
Got a new iMac as well as an early 2008 MBP. I also purchased a family pack of iWork 09. The MBP has 08 on it.
My question is should I remove 08 either before or after installing iWork 09? The MBP HD isn't that big to keep stuff I don't need.
Or will iWork 09 over-right 08 on the MacBook Pro?
    Thanks
    Allen

iwork '09 will not remove '08. You will need to do that manually. There are pieces/parts in applications; home/library/application support; library/receipts; library/application support and perhaps some others.

    Great news, thanks!
PS. Spotlight can be strange, I've disabled it on all but 2 Macs, and it's only left on those 2 so I might help with it's problems here, I'd get EasyFind for actually finding stuff...

    ...make Spotlight optional.
Just put a "use Find File instead of Spotlight" checkbox in the Spotlight control panel.
    It would make everybody happy.

<Now imagine that you're a writer for a newspaper, magazine or something. Or an editor. Someone who keeps thousands of documents on their computer for reference. Can you imagine how long it would take you to find a quote, phrase or something similar without indexing if you didn't already know where the article was? Indexing records everything, including file content. You could instantly find any passage or phrase. Spotlight would then, of course, show you exactly which file it found your search phrase in. Such a person wouldn't be without it.>
I happen to be such a person, with thousands of old text files (and many other types of files, mostly images in various formats). I need to find files really fast, and I do so maybe 100 -150 times every day. In fact, finding files is the most important basic task I expect my computer to do. The old FindFile is much, much faster than constantly navigating through directories just to find a file - a hundred or more times every day. I would go completely nuts doing that. Tiger forces me to do it that way, which is why I ditched Tiger and went back to Panther - I have serious work to do and I want an OS that works with me - not an OS that I have to work with. FindFile is absolutely essential for this way of working, which I imagine I share with many others.
Occasionally I need to find text within a file - maybe twice a year. I use EasyFind for that, because it's reliable.
Even if Spotlight's indexing system was reliable - it still wouldn't be the way I need my OS to find files. But it isn't reliable at all, and every day in these forums there are new posts flagging up ever-new instances of this. See, for example, this thread:

  • Sign in to account used to purchase app

I purchased and downloaded ML and now should be able to redownload it and install on additional computers.
When I unhide ML and try to download it again for another computer I get a window that states --
"You have updates available for other accounts.
To update this application, sign in to the account you used to purchase it."
I only have one Apple ID account and password.
My single Apple ID account is used for this Forum, the iTunes Store and the Mac App Store.
How do I resolve this problem ?

    Thanks for the quick reply.
Yes, I have the Spotlight indexing feature turned off to speed up all of my computers  and not bloat the Hard Drive with its indexing data. Spotlight also slows down the availability of flash drives and external HDs when they are plugged in so I turn off theSpotlight indexing for them also.
I use EasyFind for my Searching.

  • Converting old windows ntfs hard drives to mac

    hello All
i hope that someone can help i have 3 old Ntfs hard drives, but my mac will not search thought them for files via spotlight, even though i have a program which allows the info to be read, peg something its called.
i want to convert the drives to mac, but is there a way to do which will keep the data on the drives and with out loosing the data or corupting it.
also i have a drive with window which i run boot camp and parallels, does that have to be nfts to work or can that be converted too?
    i hope some can help
    mike

Hi Mike and welcome to Discussions.
Spotlight can't index drives formatted to NTFS because OS X can't write on them (indexing involves writing on the drive) and so can't search them, but you can search them using EasyFind for instance because OS X can read NTFS volumes.
    http://www.devon-technologies.com/products/freeware/index.html
I believe with MacFuse you can add write capability to OS X for NTFS.
I'm wondering if you couldn't convert your NTFS drive (while connected to a PC) to FAT32 which is read/writeable by OS X. But note though that FAT32 has a file size limit of 4GB, in case that matters to what you use the computer for. And _make sure_ you have a backup before attempting this. There are various ways of doing it it depending on the OS of the PC. I believe Partition Magic can do this, but Google around.
also i have a drive with window which i run boot camp and parallels, does that have to be nfts to work or can that be converted too?
What do you mean by this - is Windows installed on the drive using boot camp?
    /p

  • I restarted my iMac and lost everything!!!

I restarted my iMac, and all my pictures, my music in iTunes was all gone! Is there a way to get it back?!?!?!
Any ideas what may have caused this to happen?

Quote: " So that indicates to me that all the stuff I think I've lost is on there somewhere, but I don't know how to bring it back."
That is an encouraging sign. Since you have Tiger OSX, did you do a search of your internal hard drive with Spotlight?
You could also download this free utility "EasyFind" for Tiger. It is an efficient searching program that is not difficult to use.

It is possible the iTunes and iPhoto folders are buried in some obscure sub-folder.
Give it a shot ..... it can't hurt!

  • A third party soft crashed. I removed the application to the trash, I got rid of every preference, cache and so on (easyFind to fide hidden files). When I reinstall it, it shows the beginning of the license text for 5 seconds and closes automatically.

A third party soft crashed (Episode). When I reinstall  and relaunch it, it opens the window showing the licensing instructions, but only for a few seconds, not allowing me to go further and enter the license number. I did put the application to the trash and remove every trace of it (preferences, caches and even hidden files using EasyFind), zapped the PRAM,  I ran Onyx and disk utility, and reinstalled. And it is still the same. Anyone have an idea ?

As I did this a few times, I tried using Uapp and AppTrap. Just the same. My version of the soft is not an updated one, but the same works well on my office machine, with the same OSX snow leopard.

You have an item somewhere on your hard drive named Backups.backupd. Try searching for it. If you don't find it, try getting a copy of EasyFind and look with that.
