Eating my CDs and DVDs!

When I put a cd or dvd into my MacBook Pro, it pretty much loads fine, sounds fine, does what it is supposed to do. But when I take the CD or DVD out of the drive and look underneath, there are a lot of scratch rings 3/4 of the way out to the edge from the center. The longer I leave it in there, the more scratches that I find.
This has happened to about 3-5 of my cds and dvds now.
Should I just replace the drive? Is this covered by the warranty? Makes me mad to lose media every time I want to view it ...

Maybe I should change my question to: is it common
for these problems to occur during "mobile" media
play, or is that an "unsupported action"?
I took mine on a long road trip I made recently in an SUV with a fairly stiff suspension. It was pretty bouncy at times and didn't seem to cause any damage to media all the same. I don't think that is in any way "unsupported" unless maybe your talking off-roading in Moab while trying to watch a DVD or something
Honestly I think you have a drive that should be looked at. I don't think I would go as far as saying it is "common," but it is not the first time I have seen someone post about it. I would have it replaced if it were me.

I can get down as far as step 11 but it shows nothing about upper filters and when I type on "If the Upper Filters entry is missing follow these instructions" nothing happens
Do you mean you can't see the instructions on what to do if there is no UpperFilters entry?
If so, here's the relevant instructions for that step:
On the right side of the Registry Editor window, right-click the UpperFilters entry and choose Modify from the shortcut menu.
Right-click the empty white space within the right-hand portion of the Registry Editor window. From the shortcut menu, choose New > Multi-String Value.
Name this new value "UpperFilters" (without the quotes). Then, right-click the newly created UpperFilters entry and choose Modify from the shortcut menu.

  • KDE doesn't recognize CDs and DVDs after update.[Solved]

Since the upgrade of KDE to 4.5.3 (but I'm not sure for before that) I can't get any Cds or DVDs to work.
I had few ideas to what could cause this, but they all proved wrong:
1)I forgot to load the modules when compiling the ck-kernel with streamline option. this isn't the case as it also doesn't work on kernel26-lts.
2)K3B is responsible for this. After the upgrade of KDe the next thing that could brake it was K3B, but actually K3B is the only KDE thing that still recognizes the DVDs and CDs. Did K3B change the premissions?
If that's the case how do i fix it. i followed the Wiki guide, and it still doesn't work. K3Bsettings don't give me any other option other than the one that is default.
3)I've installed kde-cdemu-manager from AUR, but I also removed it so that shouldn't be the problem, right?
And that's all the things I installed up to the point at which I noticed that KDE doesn't want to mount and doesn't even recognises CDs and DVDs.
But I could also post my pacman.log if you wish.
    Thanks for help in advance.

Silly me I should check the ArchWiki first: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/HA … zed_by_HAL
Basically I only had to remove my cd and dvd rom from fstab and everything works.
(I also just in case removed the usb from it too, even though it worked, and it still does.)
PS.: Actually the Wiki is wrong. If you remove the /etc/hal/fdi/information/media-check-disable-storage_model_your-CD/DVD-model.fdi, HAL will just create new one after reboot. So changing it from false to true solves the problem.

  • File permissions on burned CDs and DVDs

When I burn CDs and DVDs, I often find that the permissions are set such that they are only readable by me. This causes a problem when I go to a Linux machine (or presumably another Mac) with a different login ID. (Interestingly, windows ignores these permissions.) If I remember, I can go in and change all the permissions through the Finder (or Terminal) before burning the CD, but I often forget. Is there a way in the burn process to make a disc universally readable?
    Thanks,

Haven't tried scanning the discs since I myself don't have access to a Windows machine. I've tried various brands of discs but to no avail; one thing I've noticed though is that DVD+R discs seem to function every now and then but things with CDs and DVD-Rs aren't the same.
Well, it's only 10 extra minutes to make the image and burn it so maybe I'll have to cope with it.

  • CDs and DVDs are literally spit out of my iMac

I don't know if this is normal, but my iMac really spits out the CDs and DVDs when I eject them. It used to stop midway and hold it in place like my Powerbook does.
I already tried repairing permissions and all that. I was going to run down to the Apple store at 5pm today and I just wanted to know if I should even bother going. Because if this is a normal thing for the computer to do, I might as well not even bother.
BTW my warranty expires on May 16th and I don't have the funds to get Apple Care.

So I took my iMac in yesterday and they had to replace the bezel. It was a warranty service, but my 1 year is up today and I hope nothing else happens to it. I don't really have the funds to get applecare (struggling college student), but I also found out my iMac is within the serial numbers of the faulty iMacs and I guess I have another year for any problems that arise from that.

I have reinstalled iTunes a few times and have done soft and hard reboots but still no luck.  Any ideas on the simplest way to resolve this matter?

  • The drivers for importing and burning CDs and DVDS are missing, it advised reinstalling but a reinstall does not fix

When I open Itunesthis message appears
"The regidtry settings used by the iTunes drivers for importing and bruning CDs and DVDs are missing. This can happen as a result of installing other CD burning software. Please reinstall iTunes"
I have tried reinstalling mulitple times and it has not helped. I am not aware that any other CD burning softawre being installed.
Also, when I plug in my I-pod another message appears saying
"This Ipod cannot be used because the required software is not installed. Run the iTunes installer to remove iTunes, then install the 64-bit version of iTunes."
The 64-bit version is already installed and again reinstalling hasn't helped.
What is wrong? Can anyone help?

I think you might have two different things going on at once here.

  • Itunes drivers missing for importing and burning CDs and DVDs are missing

    Hello,
I have been dealing with the following problem for a couple days now, I have searched all over the internet, talked to friends and even Apple tech support but the problem has not been solved.
Whenever I access itunes, I get the following warning: "The registry settings used by the itunes drivers for importing and burning CDs and DVDs are missing. This can happen as a result of installing other burning software. Please reinstall itunes."
I have now reinstalled itunes several times and completely removed then reinstalled as instructed, but the message continues to appear and itunes will not allow me to burn cds. Tech support advised to create a new user account on my computer which I did, it seemed to work but all I can do is import music. I cannot burn any. All my settings and playlists aren't on this account. But, are on my other one where the first message appeared.
Can anyone help? Please. I have struggled with this and cannot figure out what else to do except reset my computer to its factory setting, but would really like to avoid doing so. Please help.
I have a new HP computer running Windows Vista, I have never experienced any problems with itunes until now. I bought a new 120GB ipod in November and it works fine. Oh, I have gotten rid of Nero which was installed when this problem first occurred.
    Thank you.

Hmm. "iTunes registry error Vista fix burning and importing issues". play around with the search words till you find something relevant. Not sure, but following is something that might help. I am not a vista user so I can't help much. Good luck.

*But be warned that messing with registry might be fatal to your current OS intallation. So think all the way through before you do anything. I think you can keep a back of the registry so if something goes wrong you can restore it, but thats in XP, not sure about vista.*
