Ebay locale changes on Firefox update

Automatic update today to FF v14.0.1 brought a problem which has happened with all recent updates and it's driving me crazy ebacuse all the ideas gleaned from a Google search in the past have failed to work this time.
It's all about the little search window at the top right. I have it set to Ebay and, because I live in the UK, I'd like it to open Ebay.co.uk. I'd set it to that but now it's reset to Ebay.com after the upgrade. I've edited the xml file in the searchplugins folder and all locales that I could find in about:config appear to be en-uk, yet it still launces the American site. Any help gratefully received and WHY can we not have this happen every time an update is installed? Best wishes from Lincoln, England, David

Fixed it - I forgot cookies and there was one for the American site, once deleted I now search on the UK version of Ebay.
BUT the question is - why does a version upgrade reset things like this? I'd have thought it was like a preference and should be preserved untouched.

    I fixed it!!! Following advice from similar posts, I searched the hard drive for "sessionrestore.js" in my Firefox Profiles folder (you'll need to enable viewing of hidden files in Windows Explorer (Tools > Folder Options > View (then select Hidden files option) then Apply to all folders) to do this). I then shut down Firefox, deleted the file and restarted - my home page was correct and it didn't try to open my old session! Some other posts suggested deleting everything called "sessionrestore" in that folder, but I didn't need to.

  • The adware that came with the Firefox update is keeping me from using Ebay.

    The ads are popping up everywhere on ebay.
    There are no instances of adchoice in remove programs.

    Hi oldman12,
    Sorry you are having problems.
    You will not have got adware from a Firefox update unless you are using some none official site that bundles Firefox with adware &/or modifies it (possiby illegaly).
    You did not provide full troubleshooting information. You did provide a plugins listing whilst posting the question. Your plugins list includes
    * MindSpark Toolbar Platform Plugin Stub for 32-bit Windows
    That is probably not good. It is probably part of your problem.

  • My page is spread beyond the borders of my screen and I can't change it--happened after recent Firefox update, I think

    I can't find any tool to change this setting.
    Before Firefox update, I had control over the screen setting. Now the page is double wide.

    It is possible that the screen is too wide.<br />
    Open the system menu via Alt+Space and see if you can resize that window.<br />
    If that works then close Firefox (File > Exit/Quit) to save that setting.<br />

  • Update button label when locale changes, in AS3

    What I'm trying to do is pretty do what this does:
    <s:Button label="{resourceManager.getString('Strings', 'some_resource')}"/>
    but in ActionScript code. I have a function to add a new tab button to a layout which takes a string and just trying to set the label to the same string doesn't work obviously. So what I need is a way to set the button label to some bindable value that will update whenever the locale changes, like it does automatically when doing it in MXML.

    Nevermind, I figured it out. For those of you that are curious about the solution I found it's in the code below. The only way I could figure out how to get it working is by declaring a local function right after creating a button and attaching it as a "change" event handler to the resourceManager.
    public function addTab(resourceName:String):uint
         var newTab:Button = new Button();
         newTab.label = resourceManager.getString('Strings', resourceName);
         newTab.setStyle("skinClass", Skins.Buttons.TabButton);
         // Create a local function that will update the button label whenever the locale changes
         var localeChangeHandler:Function =
              function (e:Event):void
                   newTab.label = resourceManager.getString('Strings', resourceName);
         resourceManager.addEventListener("change", localeChangeHandler);

  • Changing Firefox update notification behavior?

    Hi!
    There seem to be two kinds of Firefox update notifications -- the polite little box that appears in the upper right corner from time-to-time, and then the giant covers-what-you're-doing one that you need to click cancel on if you're in the middle of something and can't upgrade right that second (very annoying if you happen to be in the middle of working on something when it steals your mouse and keyboard focus!) I've noticed this for the last several Firefox versions and updates.
    I think what I'm describing as "the polite little box" might be Firefox sending a message via libnotify, but I could be wrong.
    The giant interrupts-what-you're-doing one has interrupted me at just the wrong moment and caused me lost work one too many times, and I have to turn it off (with one tool I regularly use, losing mouse focus in the middle of selecting an image region means you have to start over). However, I'd rather not lose update reminders all together, because I do appreciate knowing when there's a new release out that I should install. Is there some tweak in "about:config" that would let me turn off the big interrupts-what-you're-doing update notification, but keep the polite little one, or some other method to receive update notifications in a way that doesn't steal keyboard and mouse focus?

    On Linux things differ some what. Your install of Firefox would appear to be from your Linux distro (e.g. Canonical build if Ubuntu, rebranded as IceWeasel if Debian). It is possible to install Mozilla builds. See also.

  • How can I set Firefox update preferences via script so I can configure our 200 Macs to disable checking for updates?

    Most of our Mac users do not have admin privileges. So when they get alerted about Firefox updates, they don't have the ability to install them. We would like to disable Firefox for checking for updates, then push out updates from our software server as needed. We have about 200 machines to configure. Is there a way to disable checking for updates via script (bash or Applescript)? And if so, is there a guide or web site to explain the process?

    Use a mozilla.cfg file in the Firefox program folder to lock prefs or specify default values.
    Place a file local-settings.js in the defaults\pref folder where you also find the file channel-prefs.js to specify using mozilla.cfg.
    pref("general.config.filename", "mozilla.cfg");
    pref("general.config.obscure_value", 0); // use this to disable the byte-shift
    See:
    * http://kb.mozillazine.org/Locking_preferences
    You can use these functions in mozilla.cfg:
    defaultPref(); // set new default value
    pref(); // set pref, but allow changes in current session
    lockPref(); // lock pref, disallow changes

  • Are all 'maintenance programs' compatible with Firefox? I'd like to install one, but don't want to use one that will change my Firefox settings.

    I want to install a 'computer maintenance program' but want to make sure that the one I use won't have a problem with or change my Firefox settings. Do you have any suggestions as to which program to use?

    Thanks a lot Cor-el,
    I actually want to use a different user interface language. I was able to install the spell-checkers and dictionaries previously, but I didn't know what to do with the UI language. I checked the links you kindly provided but apparently, the downloadable language packs are not compatible with Firefox 31, which they set up in my office. Is there any way to force the install?
    I also checked out the locale switcher but since the language pack extension is not compatible with firefox 31... If you have time to spare, I would be very interested in finding out more about your desktop shortcut solution.
    I use a mac at home, and language-wise it's so much better. My own profile is completely in English whereas my wife is in French, which simplifies things (I just made sure to tell her to use safari if she wants to browse in French!)
    One solution I used in the past was to reinstall firefox in English, but I have to do that every time the IT guys update FF, and then, you don't want to stand out if you want to remain in their good graces.
    Thank you very much for your help anyway,
    Remy

  • Since the most recent Firefox updates, I am having trouble with certain features on The New York Times website; I can no longer see certain weblog comments, or post comments, etc.

    This question is admittedly a little complicated. The New York Times website has a number of weblog pages which include brief stories followed by space for readers to leave comments. You probably need to be a Times On-Line subscriber to really see what I'm talking about, but some examples would be this City Room blog: http://cityroom.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/09/02/bloomberg-cancels-radio-talk-amid-furor-over-aides-resignation/ or this Arts Beat blog: http://artsbeat.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/09/01/theater-talkback-remembering-jerry-leiber-a-reluctant-pioneer-of-the-jukebox-musical/
    Since the most recent Firefox updates, when I view these pages, which traditionally have a number of reader comments at the bottom of the Times' story (or at least a space to leave a comment), I can no longer see the comments. There's simply empty. blank space. I know that the comments are there; if I open Internet Explorer and log on to the same page, the comments are suddenly visible. I don't understand where this problem has come from. I haven't noticed whether I'm missing seeing anything on other websites yet.
    I also cannot post comments on other parts of the Times website; while the pages dedicated to story-specific reader comment seem to load correctly and the space to type my comment does appear, I can't actually submit the comment. Repeated pressing of the "submit" icon has no effect. Once again, this works normally in IE.
    For the record, in the past week, I have changed my computer's anti-virus software from McAfee to Norton 360. I run Windows XP. If there's any another information I can provide, please advise, as I vastly prefer running Firefox to IE.

  • I've tried to troubleshoot downloading Firefox but it won't open on Windows XP. The Firefox Update box with the hour glass symbol runs for hours. Then I have trouble even shutting down. When I click on Firefox, no window, program won't quit, etc....

    Windows XP. I used to use Firefox and it worked okay. I'm not sure why I downloaded a new version but it won't open. The window that says "Firefox Update" continues to try to load. Hour glass symbol, for hours. If I try to click on the Desktop symbol, Nothing. Then when I try to shut down, it's slow, programs won't quit, or it freezes. I've removed Firefox completely and tried downloading again with the same results. Even with the latest version. Shit. Whassup?

    Hi zenithtwc, to test whether this is a settings issue, could you do a three-minute experiment?
    '''Create a new Firefox profile'''
    A new profile will have your system-installed plugins (e.g., Flash) and extensions (e.g., security suite toolbars), but no themes, other extensions, or other customizations. It also should have completely fresh settings databases and a fresh cache folder.
    Exit Firefox and start up in the Profile Manager using Start > search box (or Run):
    firefox.exe -P
    ''Don't delete anything here.'' Any time you want to switch profiles, exit Firefox and return to this dialog.
    Click the Create Profile button, assign a name like Test731, and skip the option to change the folder location. Then start Firefox in the new profile you created.
    Can it reach the internet?
    When returning to the Profile Manager, you might be tempted to use the Delete Profile button. But... it's a bit too easy to accidentally delete your "real" profile, so I recommend resisting the temptation. If you do want to clean up later, I suggest making a backup of all your profiles first in case something were to go wrong.

  • Firefox update is constantly failing and is stuck in a loop. I don't know how to bypass this. Help

    When I start firefox, it automatically tries to install an update. This fails and it repeats, getting stuck in a loop which I can not get out of. Consequently, I am unable to open firefox and use the internet on this program. I have clicked ok, closed the dialogue box and ended the program using the task manager. None of these have worked. I prefer using firefox to other browsers but have had to return to internet explorer for the time being.
    Do I need to uninstall and reinstall firefox or is there another option?

    See http://kb.mozillazine.org/Software_Update (Software Update not working properly)
    Remove the files in the updates and updates\0 folder:
    C:\Documents and Settings\&lt;user&gt;\Local Settings\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Mozilla Firefox\updates
    (%USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Mozilla Firefox\updates)
    Do a clean reinstall:
    * Download a fresh Firefox copy from http://www.mozilla.com/firefox/all.html and save the file to the desktop.
    * Uninstall your current Firefox version and remove the Firefox program folder before installing that copy of the Firefox installer.
    * Don't remove personal data when uninstalling.
    * It is important to delete the Firefox program folder to remove all the files and make sure that there are no problems with files that were leftover after uninstalling.
