Ebook in RGB but text in CMYK?

We recently supplied files to an outside vendor for our ebooks. Usually, when done in-house all (pdf) files are converted completely to RGB.
However, when we got the pages back, the background images and objects were RGB, but the black text was in CMYK. When we asked, the vendor assured us that the text was more readable this way.
I cannot fathom the purpose of this, since it is entirely a digital book and will not be printed. Is there something that I'm missing, or are we right to be suspicious?

They are probably right that it is a better choice for print (because it is less likely to print as "rich black" in a mixture of inks). Not a bit of difference for on screen use, but why do you care?

• Can not paint as RGB but appears just CMYK colors

Hello!
I would lik to know how to paint in ILLUSTRATOR CS5 RGB colors. All colors here appears as CMYK. But when it was painted not a NEW DOCUMENT, but in PDF of another person, than Illsutrator CS asked to open it as CMYK or RGB and than was posible to paint there RGB colors, but in my NEW DOCUMENT (tryed differend color mode options) RGB paint paints as CMYK.

Ilvija,
Have you tried to Move the folder with Illy closed? (you may also just try to press Ctrl+Alt+Shift/Cmd+Option+Shift during startup, but that may not be enough.
If that does not help, there are more things to try. A less nice solution may be a reinstallation, with the Cleaner Tool included in the process.

• Why do I get two different RGB equivalents for one CMYK color?

I’m helping someone incorporate their blue logo into business cards and a branding guide. The Illustrator file they gave me of their logo is set to the CMYK color space, so I used these CMYK values for their branding guide. When I click on the RGB tab to see the converted values for the CMYK color, they are insanely different from the RGB equivalent I get when using an online color converter, like Adobe Kuler. In both InDesign and Illustrator, the CMYK values for the blue logo are 79, 56, 2, 0 and when I click on the RGB tab in InDesign or Illustrator, these programs tell me that the RGB equivalent is 69, 112, 179. However, when I use the Adobe Kuler website and plug in the CMYK values, the website (and other websites like it) tell me that the RGB equivalent to this CMYK color is actually 54, 112, 250. I’m not sure which RGB value is actually correct.
That said, I tried plugging in the RGB values I get from the design software into the Adobe Kuler color converter, and I get totally different CMYK values than what the design software tells me. Which color values do I include on the client's branding guide?
I've heard that blue colors are notoriously hard to convert between RGB and CMYK, and I'm wondering if that's why I'm getting these drastically different values from different color conversion tools. I've also read that different ICC profiles might affect the CMYK/RGB values in the design program, but I'm not well-versed in this. Please help!!

the CMYK values for the blue logo are 79, 56, 2, 0 and when I click on the RGB tab in InDesign or Illustrator, these programs tell me that the RGB equivalent is 69, 112, 179.
69|112|179 is the conversion you'll get using the default North American General Purpose Color Settings—or US Web Coated SWOP v2 converted to sRGB. As Willi implies there are many flavors of CMYK and RGB so different sources and destinations, as well as the conversion intent, will produce different results.
So "branding" color this way doesn't really work because 79|56|2|0 CMYK will look very different on newsprint than it will on a GRAcol profiled press with glossy paper, and 69|112|179 RGB will look very different in a CC app with a ProPhoto RGB assignment then it will look in a web browser with no profile assigned.
The best you can do is qualify the values—79|56|2|0 US Web Coated (SWOP) v2 CMYK = 69|112|179 sRGB IEC6196-2.1 RGB

• SSRS Export to text and NOTHING BUT TEXT!

Is it possible to export a report to text only format? When I export my report to csv and then use the old DOS command to "type" the exported csv file there is a horrible little character at the beginning of the file.
I need to export just as text and nothing but text to drop the exported report into a 3rd party service which processes it. This squiggly little character is tripping the 3rd party system. I cant believe something so simple is not supported natively by SSRS?
I'm using SQL Server 2008 R2.
Please help!

Hi Hale,
Please try to add the following text in the rsreportserver.config to work around the issue.

• PDF looks fine on screen but text does not print

PDF created from Word looks fine on screen but text does not print (graphics do). Alos loses text on FTP or Email. Windows 8.1 64bit. Acrobat XI Std. Word2013. Print to PDF from Word 600dpi, use doc fonts, download as softfont. Arial, calibrai - all fonts lost. Same issue as Phillipio61 and alacker2?.

Problem not with all fonts. Problem with arial and calibri fonts - maybe others. Times New Roman, gil sans, viner are OK for example.

• I have created PDF from hardcopy by using my scanner. After I run OCR option for my PDF by using Acrobat Pro 9. But "Text-to-speech" functionality of the PDF says that an error message comes up that says the page is empty when I turns on the read out loud

I have created PDF from hardcopy by using my scanner. After I run OCR option for my PDF by using Acrobat Pro 9. But "Text-to-speech" functionality of the PDF says that an error message comes up that says the page is empty when I turns on the read out loud option in Acrobat. Kindly help me to sortout this problems?

So I tried generating the same PDFs on two other computers that have Acrobat 9 Pro. Results were reproduced. The verdict is:
- complex PDF files (that is, containing cross-references, tables of contents, and bookmarks) generated by Acrobat 9.x Pro are roughly 2-5x larger than the identical file generated with Acrobat 8.x Pro.
- different PDF conversion settings make a negligable difference (less than 10% rather than 70-80%).
- using the "Reduce File Size" or "Optimize PDF" option cuts the file size roughly in half, almost always resulting in a "image downsampling mask" warning message, which requires acknowledgement (that is a problem for batch processing or automation).
- adding an Acrobat watermark to the file cuts the file size roughly in half.
- just using Save As to another filename has no effect on file size.
- generating the PDF in Acrobat 9 with links but no PDF bookmarks still results in the inflated file size.
- generating the PDF in Acrobat 9 without any links or bookmarks results in approximately the same file size as the Acrobat 8 PDF with full links and bookmarks.
It appears that Acrobat 9's manner of adding links is what's bloating the files, and in my case it's probably not related to images or image resolution/print quality. It's a shame, because Acrobat 9 seems to have made some improvements to the Review Tracker interface, and a few other bells and whistles which I haven't really gotten around to exporing yet. But unless I find a way to keep my links and the PDF file sizes comparable to what I was getting with Acrobat 8 Pro, it looks like I'm going to stay with Acrobat 8.

• I have a '09 MacBook Pro w/ OS X Mavericks and an iPhone 4 and I'd like to copy a thread of text, not notes, but text from my phone to my computer. How do I do that?

I have an '09 MacBook Pro w/ OS X Mavericks and an iPhone 4. I'd like to copy a thread of text, not notes, but text from my phone to my computer. How do I do that?

First of all, you should always save you photos on computer like any other digital camera.
Backup on iCloud or iTunes only backup your Camera Roll. The other photos should be already on the computer.
Note: Photos are not saved in iTunes, it's only a conduit between your iPhone and your photo managing software on computer.
What computer do you have?

• Convert RGB ID Document to CMYK

When I create a document I convert the images to CMYK in PS before I place them. However, I have a multi-page CS ID document for printing provided by a customer that is in good order except that the photos are RGB. I need to create a high res CMYK PDF. What is the best way to proceed? I see there is an option "convert to destination" in ID when you are creating the PDF. I could make the destination "Document CMYK - U.S. Web Coated." Or I could create an RGB PDF and then convert it using Pitstop. Is there another option I should be looking at?

I have always used InDesign´s Export and it´s option to convert colors to particular destination profile.
Of course you can convert colors afterwards too, but there´s other issues like PDF version optimization that you have to take care if you use some other method. I always try to make print-ready PDF directly from InDesign.
And I usually use option Convert To Destination (Preserve Numbers), with that option InDesign keeps colors (CMYK values) of native indesign objects untouched. Convert To Destination (without Preserve Numbers) may cause unwanted color convertions to native vector graphics or texts.

• Do any instances of RGB get converted to CMYK on output to PDF?

Hi,
I'm producing a HUGE catalogue that I've inherited from another designer. It will be going to print soon and I'll be providing the printers with a press ready PDF. The catalogue contains hundreds of individual blocks of colour (used to show colour options for a product). All of them are currently made of an RGB mix. Without having to go through each and every one changing to CMYK (there's no instance of each colour in the swatches pallet), is there a quicker way? Also, is it necessary anyway if I'm providing a PDF - I assume they get converted to CMYK in the final PDF?
I've used InDesign for years but never inherited a previous design with so many RGB items in it!
Thanks.

It can also be done via scripting. This is AppleScript:
tell application "Adobe InDesign CC 2014"
tell document 1
repeat with a from 1 to count of every color
try
set space of color a to CMYK
end try
end repeat
end tell
end tell
Also the converted CMYK numbers you get depends on the document's assigned CMYK profile (or the Color Settings' CMYK Working Space if there's no assignment). And the Intent and Black Point Compensation you choose in Color Settings can have a significant effect on the conversion numbers.

• Printing RGB colors - Conversion to CMYK?

Hi,
I have been working for a little while in converting my old RGB colors to CMYK printer friendly colors.
However, I carefully choosed my printing friendly CMYK colors to be as close as possible to the RGB colors but the prints are dull !
On the other hand, when I print my file withj RGB colors using the PDF Distiller tagged with Adobe1998 profile and send the file to the printer, colors look smarter !
It means that the CMYK colors I picked myself are not good enough anf the Color Managment in Adobe PDF or Illustrator are better than me ! As follows:
- In Illustrator -> Print -> Color Management tab -> Color Handling: Let Illustrator determine colors
- in Acrobat Reader -> Print -> Color Management tab of the plotter: Application managed colors
Both ouput similar quality prints, and better than my own CMYK colors !
Are the Application Color Management engines in Illustrator and in Adobe Reader similar in their conversion?
How can I find out which are the CMYK colors printed when the application (Reader or Illustrator) manages colors, from my initial RGB colors? I would like to use them directly in my document...
Thanks

Hi,
Thanks for your response. I put these color issues on hold because I had no time to search more on that recently...
However, I have still lots of questions about color conversion!
When I said "carefully choose" CMYK colors, it means CMYK colors printable and which look similar to my old RGB colors on-screen. But of course, screen is not enough!
What I noticed is that when I print my old RGB colors (not in printer color space), Adobe Reader or Illustrator were able to make good conversion to CMYK for printing.
Now, I would like to find out to which CMYK color codes Adobe Reader or Illustrator converted my RGB colors? Then, I would be able to use these CMYK color codes directly in my application...
Is there any way to find out that?
Cheers

• CS4 Text around a bottom curve but text straight up and down?

I have to change the names on bottles that were shot and so I am trying to type the names. 1st I tried Photoshop and could not get the 3D to work and could not get the arc or the warp to work correctly.
So I went over to Illustrator. I finally got it figured out how to get the text on the bottom of the curve and reading corectly... BUT... the text on the R side of the curve, curves into the curve instead of each letter staying straight up and down horizontally. Help please? Nothing like being short on time and having to figure out how to get the text on a curve with the letters staying straight up and down instead of curving into the curve. Thank you!!!

OK. I did that but now I am trying to copy paste into my Photoshop file but when it comes out of Illustrator... It brings an odd white box that is really messing me up!!! Why won't it let me just copy the text? Why is Illustrator making an extra white box that is blocking my image? Thanks. See the 2 below. 1 is the bottle before I have gotten the name over and the other, is the bottle when I am trying to paste just the text in place. For some reason, Illustrator is adding a white box that is messing me up? 1 is how it should look. 2 is Illustrator is making an extra white box that is covering up most of my bottle.

• How can you make phone ring but text vibrate

How do you set your phone to ring but all other notifications ie texts &emails vibrate?
This question is for iPhone 4 & 4s

As i mentioned up top, you can do this with a silent ringtone. I have read some app's have muted ringtones(don't know of the app name though) OR, GarageBand can make ringtones on Mac. (that is where i think you would need further explaining on, if you have Mac).
The silent tone will be set as text's tone (as the same if it made noise), it will vibrate two times quick...While asleep, awake, on a phone call, still texting, at almost any time i can think of, (other than powered OFF.)
I have recommended this method, for people asking as a regular ringtone, for telemarketer's, unknown callers, and other sort of people. And YES, you will need the Vibrate turned on.
Hope this helped.

• How to Get RGB Values from a CMYK Color in the DOM (CS5)

(CS5, Actionscript)
Hi all,
I have an InDesign document containing TextFrames whose border colors are specified as a CMYK array.
I would like to be able to get its color specification as its closest RGB equivalent.
Does the InDesign DOM contain a method for doing this for me automatically? If not, what workarounds are there?
TIA,
mlavie

Here's how to convert RGB to CMYK:
function rgb2CMYK (r,g,b){
var color = app.documents[0].colors.add({space:ColorSpace.RGB,colorValue:[r,g,b]});
color.space = ColorSpace.CMYK;
var retVal = color.colorValue;
color.remove();
return retVal;
The same idea for the reverse.
For info on converting to grayscale, check out this:
