EBS - Discoverer  Vs  BI Publisher

Hi All,
My Client has EBS R12 and has both Discoverer 10g and BI Publisher.
Please can someone help me to understand where to use Discoverer Tool and when to use BI Publisher tool.
What are the major differences and limitations of these products.
I appreciate your help.
Regards, Kolluru

Hi,
The main difference is that Discoverer is an Ad-hoc tool but can only generate tabular reports. With BI Publisher the use of templates gives you total control over the layout of your reports.
Also, it is worth noting that Discoverer workbooks can be used as a source for BI Publisher giving you some ad-hoc capability but with the nice layout from BI Publisher.

  • Please reply ASAP-Discoverer and BI Publisher

    Hi,
Could some one please list the pros and cons from switching from Discoverer to BI Publisher?
I know it seems kinda vague but anything you have experienced would be helpful.
New to both tools at this moment.
    Thanks so much!

    Hi,
BI Publisher targets formal reporting, call it "document" reporting if you like. Oracle Discoverer targets adhoc interactive reporting. Ie. With BI Publisher developers create reports, users run the the reports. With Discoverer developers create views of objects, and users create their own reports on those objects with a lot of the background complexity taken out.
So both can happily co-exist and its not a choice of one or the other, or a case of moving from one to the other - it depends on your business requirements.

  • Oracle EBS Discoverer as a data source for OBIEE 11g

We are a heavy user of Discoverer workbooks with Oracle EBS. We're moving to OBIEE 11g(11.1.1.3) and have an RPD with both 3rd party and custom content.
I wanted to ask the experts here how I can leverage my Discoverer investment with out a lot of re-work in OBIEE. I briefly looked at the MigrateEUL.exe and it says it can move an EUL to an RPD, but talks about some limitations for complex EULs such as an EBS Apps EUL. Even if it created an RPD, I'm not sure how I can merge my current RPD and this newly gen'd RPD.
I also heard from someone that there is a way to setup Discoverer EUL as a standard data source in OBIEE 11g and consume it directly. I'm looking for a document or blog that explains these steps. Any pointers or experiences with the above is appreciated!!
    Thanks.

    Hi,
    For some more details, you can refer to the following document;
    http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/developer-tools/discoverer/discoverer-metadata-conversion-assi-128504.pdf
    My personal expreriences:
The Metadata Conversion Utility is an accellerator / assistant. It does not provide you with an end product. There is some additional handwork requiered. It could be a risk when you copy an old Oracle Discoverer environment. Shit in is shit out. Last but not least; There is not yet a workbook migration utility.

  • What are the DIFFERENCES between Discoverer and BI Publisher?

    Hi,
I was asked by my manager to look into BI Publisher and give a report. Went through and the first thing that came to my mind was Oracle Discoverer.
I don’t see any difference between the 2. Both are end user reporting tools, , with basically the same functions and options, or AM I MISSING something here???
Surprisingly, both Discoverer and BIP are part of Oracle BI EE. So why have 2 products that basically does the same thing in BI EE??
I would appreciate if anybody can enlighten me.
    Thanks & Regards,
    CS

    Hi
Well not really. Discoverer is an end user reporting tool, providing the ability to generate high end reports, typically with a chart and drillable table. BIP is targeted at the other end of the spectrum, where Oracle Reports sits. It has some disco like capabilities but its strengths lie in generating documents e.g. invoices, POs , letters, listing reports, etc. It can also generate electronic formats, EFT, EDI, XML, etc.
In its standalone flavor, it comes as a server component, managing users, report security, scheduling, real time reports, etc.
So, it overlaps a little with Disco, it overlaps far more with Oracle Reports. It the strategic operational reporting solution going forward, its bundled with BIEE. BIEE being the Oracle BI product going forward. I dont think you'll find Disco shipping with BIEE.

  • CASE WHEN functionality in BI Publisher

I have previously used Discoverer to do our reporting and am investigating the differences between the two products. I understand that its chalk and cheese but one thing I am having trouble identifying is the CASE WHEN functionality that we use Discoverer in BI Publisher.
An example of the usage for our CASE WHEN would be creating a derived column in a report to convert existing data into a more standardised format.
I imagine this is quite a simple answer and I have just missed it but could anyone out there help me with where I can input the functionality in BI publisher.
I am not the most technically gifted so any answers with simple words help :-)

You can use CASE WHEN in a sql query in a data model. You can also use it in the RTF template via "if then else", choose statements etc
Take a look at section 4.10 in the BI publisher Report Designer's guide for use cases/examples: http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E23943_01/bi.1111/e22254.pdf

  • Special characters in Discoverer

    Hi everybody,
I would like to use special characters in reports such as arrow (U2192, Arial font.). It's fine in Discoverer, but after publishing to AS portal it doesn't work.
Thanks for any ideas how to solve this issue.
    Tomas Greif

    Hi,
Firstly, Desktop 4.1.37 is not a good version. You should upgrade to Desktop 4.1.48.
You should check the regional and language settings in the control panel. It will need to be changed to display different characters sets.

  • HTTP 500 - Internal Server Error from Discoverer Viewer to Portal

    HI,
I created a tab with a list of workbooks created with Discoverer Viewer and published with Discoverer Portliest Provider (List of Database Workbooks). Another tab contains four Discoverer Worksheets created with the same account. Everything works well but if i click on a report in list and open Discoverer Viewer, when i return to portal and go to tab containing worksheets i see message "HTTP 500 - Internal Server Error" and i'm not able to do anything. I only can close my browser and i must reconnect to portal!
    Can you help me?
My portal version is cg (9.0.4), i'm using Windows 2000 ESP and Internet Explorer 6.
I tried with Olin and Mazola but result did not change.
I used a public connection bud i tried a private connection too. Nothing happened.

The application.log file, under the OC4J which running your Discoverer provider, should give you some hints about the problem you're facing.

    Hi,
My customer is receiving error XMLParseException: Expected 'EOF' when submitting a concurrent job, and so I'm trying to log into EBS with the XML Publisher Admin. responsibility and get to the Administration tab. From the Navigator or EBS all I see is:

I'm sure I'm missing something simple here, but I've been scouring the docs and forums for an hour now. Can someone please advise? Per the Metalink note, I need to check on the location defined for a temporary directory et al.

  • Integrating Discoverer in a Publiehr report

    Héllo,
I try to make a report based on a Discoverer query, but I've got problems creating the data model.
I followed the instructions of this site :

When I create my data model, I choose the type "Oracle Discoverer". When I try to retrieve the connections, I've got this error
"An error occurred when retrieving the connections.
    Error Detail
    ; nested exception is:

Does someone know how I could handle it ?
    Thanks !

Better check my White paper which talks about the matter. This may be a bit outdated but I still consider it important as it discusses the integration points.

  • Ways to put Multiple discoverer worksheets in a single Portlet. (10G releas

    Hi all
Can anybody suggest me ways to put Multiple discoverer worksheets in a single Portlet. (10G release 2)
    - Out of the box (no coding option)
    - Java Beans options
Note:- the discoverer sheet portlet allows only 1 workseet.
Would appreciate any pointers/help in this regard
    Cheers!!
    Puneet

    Hi Puneet,
Discoverer portlets do not require any knowledge of code, Java beans, HTML, or any other programming construct. They are probably the simplest and easiest to use business intelligence portlets in the market today, and most customers I show these to are simply amazed at their power and user friendliness.
    Anyway, to answer your question:
    - You can choose to have one table (or crosstab) and one graph in one Discoverer portlet.
Note that since a Discoverer portlet is published on a Portal page, you do not have to worry about having or not having the capability to publish more than one Discoverer worksheet to a single portlet. By adding multiple Discoverer portlets to a single (or multiple) Portal pages you can achieve the same effect.
Discoverer is a portlet provider to Oracle Portal. This means that any Discoverer worksheet - table, crosstab, or any of the 50+ graph types - can be published to an Oracle Portal page without any coding. This is the Discoverer Worksheet portlet.
A second Discoverer portlet is the List of Worksheets portlet, which allows you to publish a list of worksheets to a Portal page as a portlet.
The third Discoverer portlet type is the Gauge portlet. This allows you to publish a Discoverer crosstab worksheet as a Gauge (dial) visualization, allowing you to create dashboards.
For more information take a look at the "Oracle® Business Intelligence Discoverer Publishing Workbooks in Oracle Application Server Portal" doc, 10g Release 2 (10.1.2.1), Part No B14465-02

  • R12 XML Publisher desktop version

    Hi,
I am searching for the XML Publisher desktop version for R12. Is there anyone know?
    Thanks

    Hi,
Yes this version of template builder is suitable for R12. I would recommend the your download the latest version though from http://www.oracle.com/technology/software/products/publishing/index.html.
The latest version is called :
BI Publisher Desktop 10.1.3.3.1 for Windows (131 MB)
The latest releases fixes a few bugs in the Template Builder Plug-in for MS Word.
As you are using EBS and not BI Publisher standalone, you will not be able to use the functionality to connect to the BI Publisher server, as this does not exist yet for EBS. For template development purposes, this version will do exactly the same job for BI Publisher with EBS and BI Publisher Standalone.
    I hope this helps.

  • Report generation question

    Hi,
With regards to BI Discoverer and BI Publisher, is a report/workbook re-generated from the underlying data source every time someone requests it or does the BI server serve up an existing copy of the report?
The context: we will have some 600 reports being accessed by 2000 odd people. I'm trying to get some understanding of the load on the server and the performance of the report generation.
Appreciate any help you can provide.
    Cheers,
    Nim

BI Publisher will execute your query each time you access the report, by default BI Discoverer will do also. But BI Discoverer has the possibility to schedule reports, each time the report is accessed, the scheduled (saved) result will be shown on the report. An other possibility is to use snapshots on the DB to schedule your queries and base your reports on those snopshots.
