ECC disabled in my iMac

Last night  I increased the RAM from 1.5 GB to 2 GB by swapping out the .5 GB to 1 GB.
When I checked the System Profiler for RAM it confirmed that there was 2 GB RAM however it noted that ECC is disabled in that iMac.
The said  iMac is the "Core 2 Duo" 2.16 17-Inch which as best as I understood the Apple Tech Guy  is the "build-to-order" configuration of the iMac "Core 2 Duo" 2.0 17-Inch (Late 2006). ( What did he say? )
Was i sold a bad bad bad stick of one GB RAM ?
What exactly is ECC, why is it disabled and HOW do we enable the ECC ????????

ECC stands for Error Correction and Checking, your iMac doesn't use ECC ram.

ECC is a different kind of RAM and it is not as fast.  ECC is supposed to be disabled in your laptop.

  • Ecc disabled

Received an out of memory message recently saving a large file oin Photoshop CC. Ram shows ECC disabled.  not sure what this means and is there a fix?

ECC is an extra error checking function built right into the RAM, but it's typically only used in high end workstations and servers. Only the Mac Pros use ECC RAM, and that's why that particular field is there. It's normal for a MBP, but on a Mac Pro it might indicate a problem.

  • MobileMe syncing disabled on my iMac

I have an iMac running OS10.5.8, an iPhone 3GS running OS4.0.2. I also have Outlook at work on a PC. Using MobileMe, I used to be able to sync my calendars & contacts between Outlook, my iPhone and iCal. Although the calendars sync between Outlook and my iPhone, so I know MobileMe works, the MobileMe sync is disabled on my iMac! When I plug my phone into iTunes I get a message saying that "syncing is disabled on this computer". It allows me to override for syncing podcasts, etc., but not for regular ongoing MobileMe syncing of calendars. In System Preferences->MobileMe-->Sync is grayed out.

Has your mobile me account expired and have not been auto renewed?

You can also delete all accounts from the list. Or, open Internet Accounts pane in System Preferences and uncheck Messaging for each account.

  • My mac pro shows ECC disabled, is this a problem

i recently upgraded my memory with a 4gb stick and used the existing 1 gb sticks in the other slots.
After assembling the stick, switched on the computer and checked the status. It shows ECC disabled. Is this anything to worry about or, is that how it works.

Your mac is equipped with the substantial Hardware assist to use Error Correcting Code  ECC memory. When the proper modules are installed, single-bit errors are corrected on the fly, and double-bit errors are detected and are intended to cause a kernel panic to avoid propagating the error into the rest of the system and poisoning the data on your Hard drive.
If ECC has been turned off, there is a major problem in your memory subsystem, and you are now "working without a net".
    YES, this is a problem.
Undo whatever changes you made and get the correct memories for your Mac Pro Tower.

  • Disable sound on imac in target display mode

Have a question about disabling the sound.
I have a MacBook Pro connected to my iMac by the thunderbolt cable. I enable the target display mode on iMac with a script for disabling some configurations on iMac ( including the bluetooth for mouse and keyboard steal ).
I set the sound output in the MacBook Pro to the iMac DisplayPort.
The problem is now i have both outputs on iMac speakers. i want to disable all sound from iMac but keep the output from MacBook Pro on iMac speakers.
    Is this posible?
    Thanks.

Humm... I might go TosLink between the iMac and the FastTrack and then run the USB connection to the MacBook Pro when your using it in Target Display Mode.
Or vise Versa, leave the USB connected to the iMac and use the TosLink connection for the MacBook Pro.

  • My USB ports get disabled on my iMac when in sleep mode

I can't seem to figure this out. When waking from sleep mode, all my USB ports are disabled. I first noticed it when the USB speakers stopped working, but none of the ports work, to the printer, or to the scanner. The only way to reactivate the ports is to do a restart. I did a virus scan of my entire HD but it found nothing. I have not installed any new software recently so I'm stumped. I'm hoping this isn't a hardware issue.

Sometimes, a computer has a problem remapping your USB devices after sleep. Disconnect all of your USB devices: printers, mice, scanners, everything. Wait a minute. Reinsert the devices. This resets your USB map.

  • Outgoing mail disabled on my iMac

I'm running version 10.8.2 on an iMac. Outgoing mail won't work. Under advanced settings, the "Authetnication" line says "Apple Token." On my MacBook Pro (for which mail works fine), that line says "Password." I tried to change it on the iMac and got "the "Incoming Mail Server" field cannot be empty, It isn't empty; but the entry, "p07-imap.mail.me.com," is greyed out. Do I have to reinstall mail in my iMac?

Your iCloud account should be added in the Mail, Contacts & Calendars preference pane in System Preferences. See its built-in help for details.

  • Iphone disabling router when imac sleeps...

I have my iMac behind an SMC Barricade SMC7008ABR router. I recently upgraded the router firmware which I suspect is the reason why I've started seeing this problem on a network that's been stable for years.
When I put my iMac into either software or hardware sleep, and only if I have my iPhone connected to the usb-docking cradle, within 1-3 seconds, the router suddenly resets itself and then proceeds to berserk itself. All the nodes on the network come down, and the light show begins on the front panel.
Power-cycling the router does not work. Nor will the router reset itself until such time that I remove the iMac from it's slumber.
Unplugging the iPhone (gen 1) from the cradle and sleeping the box does not affect network operations.
I can duplicate this every time.
The router is my DHCP server as well. I can provide more data if requested. Have searched the forums and google'd the problem but couldn't locate any helpful information.
    TIA

progress: I unchecked the power-options box: wake for ethernet admin access, and that seems to have solved the issue.

  • Java is disabled on my iMac.

I've followed instructions to enable java 6 and upgraded to 7 and nothing works.  I've enabled JAVA on my web browsers, but when i go to the JAVA site to test if it's been installed, I get an error message telling me it has not been.  I need JAVA to do a remote session with work.  No problems with this on my pc and I'm getting frustrated.  Any ideas how to enable JAVA?  Thanks

Repair permissions and restart your computer.  See if that works out for you.

The important thing to do is make sure you get ram from a reliable, Mac-friendly source as Macs are very sensitive to their ram.  Two good sources are Crucial and OWC, http://www.macsales.com both will tell you just what ram you machine will take and guarantee compatibility and give a lifetime warranty.  And they have on-line videos on how to install.

  • Massive problem with iMac i5

Today I bought a new i5 iMac with 8Gig of ram. I had massive problems with the instillation of Lion. I spoke with Apple for nearly 1.5 hours. I finally got it working and now it has crashed 9 times in 30 minutes. Why?? Please Help. I am going to take it back to the shop tomorrow.

    Thanks fro your quick reply.
I get the slow darkened screen that moves down the until it says that I have to hold down the poer button for a forced restart.
I tried opening all the really big memory hogs ll at once, eg Final cut pro, apature, imove HD etc, and that was no problem. It seem sto be completly random.

I got this photo from the net, but this is what I get. (Now 12 times)
It was a 4 Gig ram imac, but the store made it up to 8 gig with 4x2 gig before I collected it.

  • Can't upgrade 2010 27" iMac to Yosemite

Hi all-- i'm at my wits' ends here. I have a 2010 27" iMac with 12GB of RAM. I've been trying to install Yosemite for a week now. (It runs 10.9.5 perfectly.) Whenever I try to upgrade, the iMac restarts and gets to the gray screen with the apple. It then just locks at the progress bar at 50% or so. Sometimes it kernel panics and restarts. I have tried resetting the PRAM/SMC, reformatted drive (I installed a new one, in fact!) and used cmd-R to run disk utility (disk is fine.) Tried deleting boot caches, and that just drops me back into 10.9.5. I honestly don't know what to do at this point. Could it be faulty RAM modules? I got them when I was in Pakistan, and it's not an even number -- 12GB, as I mentioned. Anyone have any ideas?
    Many thanks,
    Chris
