ECC registered or ECC unbuffered?

Hello, guys.
I'm thinking about expanding Mac Pro memory. My model is 2.66GHz Quad-core (early 2009). The maximum RAM on the official's spec page is 8GB, but it shows 16GB maximum RAM available on the online store (customized option). Here's my question,anyone has successfully upgraded the RAM with a single 4GB RAM?
If yes, which of the following models is recommemded?
1.DDR3 Memory 240Pin Long-DIMM DDR3-1066MHz ECC Registered Memory
or
2.DDR3 Memory 240Pin Long-DIMM DDR3-1066MHz ECC Unbuffer Memory

Not sure if it makes any difference as there is no such specification in the Apple specs. Just says ECC DIMM. In any event the right memory can be found here.

  • Does Mac Pro 4,1/5,1 support "buffered/registered" ECC memory?

    As the spec said, Mac Pro 4,1 & 5,1 use ECC unbuffered memory, but I really do want to know if "buffered/registered" ECC RAM will work on Mac Pro 5,1 with no problem?
    I know "Unbuffered and Fully-Buffered" memory are 2 totally different stuff, and cannot use with the other side.
    But what about "buffered/registered" memory? Could it use under "unbuffered" mother board like MacPro 4,1 & 5,1? If so, can they mix with others?
    I've google and search around the internet but still didn't find the answer...

    I think you are confusing DDR3 and DDR2 type of memory modules.
    DDR2 PC2-8500 were the FBDIMMs that were used in the 2.1 and 3.1 Mac Pro versions (before 2009).
    These were 800Mhz or 600Mhz versions.  They used serial data channels from one DIMM to the next so the DIMMs had to be clocked very quickly to achieve speeds.  Thus, the need for the fully buffered DIMM to pass the data from one DIMM to the next.   Because they were clocked so quickly, they had to have heat sinks to bring the temperature down to the lower fan speeds Apple wanted to use.   The heat sinks kept prices high.  So did the fact that few servers adopted the FBDIMM technology.   These also had ECC.
    DDR3 PC3-10600 and DDR3 PC3-8500  were used in later MAC Pros, version 5.1 and 4.1 respectively.
    PC3-10600 is a 1333Mhz DIMM.   PC3-8500 is a 1066Mhz DIMM.
    Both of these are using ECC bits.  Thus, there are actually 9 parallel data bits, one of which is for ECC.
    Registered/buffered and Unregistered/unbuffered have a different meaning than  FBDIMM. 
    It is better to use the Registered/Unregistered terminology to avoid confusion with FBDIMMs.
    Registered DIMMs are sometimes referred to as RDIMMs and Unregistered DIMMs as UDIMMs.
    Also one may see an R on the end of the PC3-8500 designation as in PC3-8500R to designate registered memory.
    One thing that is for sure, the memory controller in the CPUs has to have uniform memory in the slots for each given processor.   That is, you cannot mix registered memory in one slot with unregistered memory in another slot for the same processor.  Apple indicates the computer will not boot in this case.  This is because the signal timing differs to each and the memory controller in the CPU is only a homogeneous type.
    Apple indicates that registered DIMMs are supported by Mac Pro version 5.1 - 2010 models.
    They have not provided the same indication for Mac Pro version 4.1 - 2009 models.
    WIth that said, firmware on version 4.1 macs may be able to be upgraded to support RDIMMs.
    I suppose this updates the timing issue to suppor the RDIMMs.
    Why is this significant - 
    Used registered DIMMs with ECC are easier to come by due to people upgrading their server computer to more denser  memory capacity in the same slot. 
    Used unregistered DIMMs with ECC are harder to come by. 
    Accordingly, used registered DIMMs are less expensive on ebay.

  • Full ECC support?

    Do the Nvidia Nforce3-250 motherboards like the K8N Neo2 Platinum support ECC?  The manual mentions compatibility with 18 chip dimms, and that they "are compatible".  ButI didn't find any mention in the manual of the ECC functionality, and the BIOS doesn't seem to have anywhere to enable/disable ECC support.
    I also checked the http://www.msi.com.tw/program/products/mainboard/mbd/pro_mbd_trp_list.php
    URL, but it didn't help clarify the situation.
    I'd like to assume that ECC works, but with a different manufacturer it turned out
    ECC dimms worked as in the system could use the available memory, but the
    ECC functionality was ignored.j
    Will ECC work fully, as in single bit errors are corrected, and double bit errors
    are reported?

    Anyway i have not heard of anyone that has tried it , so i guess this is still
    a not confirmed issue .
    What's interesting is that crutials memory selector doesn't come
    up with any ECC memory for K8N Neo2 .

    I would choose to trust the memory vendors , as some like theese have started to test modules on different mobos .

  • New ram issue?

    I bought CS$ Web Standard for my G5, and then needed to by more ram to install it. I installed my ram, installed the CS4 programs and now my CS2 photoshop and illustrator keep crashing. The new Dreamweaver crashes too but is at least usable. I used 'rember' to check the memory and it says it's OK. Could I have installed the memory wrong? I have old 128s nearest the center and then the pair of 1 gig in the second slots from center. Do I need to reinstall my CS2 programs?

    Here's what the manual says about RAM installation.
    Depending on the model, Power Mac G5 computers have either four or eight Dual Inline Memory Module (DIMM) slots arranged in two banks. The slots accept Double-Data-Rate (DDR) Synchronous Dynamic Random-Access Memory (SDRAM) devices.
    The computers ship with a minimum of 256 MB of RAM, provided by a pair of 128 MB
    DIMMs installed in slot 1 of each DIMM bank. You can add DIMMs, provided they are
    installed in pairs of equal size, one per bank, from the center outward.
    In addition, DIMMs must fit these specifications:
    • 2.5 volt
    • 84-pin module
    • Maximum number of memory devices on DDR SDRAM:16.
    • Nonparity
    • No error correcting codes (ECC)
    • Unbuffered (registered or buffered DDR SDRAM cannot be used)
    Important:
    Always install DIMMs in pairs of equal size. Memory from older Macintosh
    computers is not compatible with the Power Mac G5. Do not use older memory, even if it fits into the DIMM slots.
    Appears you installed it correctly. Where did you get the RAM? Mac OS X is picky about RAM quality. Not all RAM of the "correct" part number will work.

    I'm just starting to put the system together, I connected the power supply, the power sw, reset switch and speaker switch and VGA out on MB to monitor, both memory modules are installed, no HD attached, CPU and CPU Fan installed.
    My problem is as follows:
    When I power on the cpu fan comes on , but the Monitor/vga out detects no signal from the mother board.  The board will shut off if I give it the 8 second power switch depress.  The monitor is good and the cable to the MB because I tested both on my laptop's VGA out port.
    Also of note: I hear no "beep" from the speaker during power up.
    I tried the following:
    1) I bought 2 old PCI vidio cards, alternated between them and the MB, no output on the 6yo PCI cards for post.
    2) I bought an identical MB (same part number), and the identical problem cropped up.
    Did not matter if I resent BIOS options, did not matter if board was bare (with out any PCI pluggeg in) with VGA out on MB or PCIVID plugged in with VGA ccable plugged to PCI card.
    Both respond to power switch on/off commands.
    I read as related posts, seemed the only similar problem had to do with the memory that might cause this, I guess my next step is to buy a cheap memory module that is compatable and try that.
    Any help is greatly appreciated.
    I'm running a basic power-up test that I run before I connect more components, but right now it's not passing this basic test, and since I have the same problem with an identical MB, the problem is following the motherboard as a bios or compatability issue, not a defective board problem.

    Hello. I own a hp Z600 workstation with the b3 stepping of the chipset. I am currently running 2 Xeon E5540s and 4gb ddr3 ecc unbuffered ram. I want to run multiple virtual machines on my workstation. Should I upgrade my motherboard to the c2 stepping revision and pick up registered ram or just upgrade the ram on my current setup? Also, does the c2 revision Support xeon 55xx processors and unbuffered ram?

I checked out the specs of the 865PE Neo2-PFS Platinum, and it says in the table that you can only use 400mhz DDR RAM with an 800mhz FSB processor (which I have). It says it supports 400mhz RAM, "DUAL CHANNEL", non-ECC, unbuffered memory, but no mention of "HIGH DENSITY" or "DUAL IN LINE". Is there a difference between "DUAL CHANNEL" and "DUAL IN-LINE". Also, does anyone know what the difference is between 128 x 4 and 128 x 64, they are both 1gb? SOMEONE PLEASE HELP!!! I have seen some RAM from the same dealer which is not "HIGH DENSITY" and has the 128 x 4 configuration, and is still a 1gb module. Is that safe to buy? What RAM do I need (in detail) for my motherboard. Thanks!

    Always useful with a complete systemspec.including PSU and biosversion, so please make one.
    Can´t see anything wrong with the basic RAM specification - it also matches the MoBo basic specifications:
    - Supports four unbuffered DIMM of 2.5V DDR SDRAM.
    - Supports up to 4GB memory size without ECC.
    - Supports Dual channel DDR266/333/400/433/466/500/533 MHz and up.
    Have you tried removing the old RAM and booting only with the new 1GB stick alone ?
    Using mixed RAM, sometimes works in "Single mode" (see mobo manual), but is not recommended.
    Running Dual-channel ( 2x512 or 1024x2 ) is preferable and gives best performance, but then you need two identical sticks.
    You may also need to increase RAM voltage some in bios (example 2.7v) to achieve best stability.
    If you have some RAM compability issues with 1GB sticks - 2x512 RAM stick would be safer and give better performance, unless your aiming for more then 2GB in total.

    About "Dual In line Memory Module" - I think it´s the long version for older DIMM description.
    Just like "Double Data Rate" is the long version for DDR RAM.
    DDR means Double Data Rate RAM (in opposition to the SDRAM or Single Data Rate). DDR RAM bends the transfer rate for clock cycle. It can go quicker because it executes 2 instructions for cycle of clock of the RAM instead of an only instruction like it is the case of the SDR.

    Yes you can upgrade upto 8GB (2*4GB) if the operating system installed is 64-bit
    There are two slots in the memory bay
    Supports dual channel boost if two identical RAMs of same size are put
    Type: DDR3, SO-DIMM SDRAM
    Non-ECC, UNBUFFERED
    Speed: your processor can run RAM only at 1066MHz, if 1333MHz is put it'll downgrade to 1066MHz
    Capacity: upto 8GB only if OS installed is 64-bit
    In 32-bit OS, system can "take" only upto 4GB.
    If your OS is 64-bit, you can add extra 4GB in other slot to make total RAM to 6Gb too.

  • P67A-GD55 Memory Query

    In February I am emabarking on a new PC/System build.
    The Motherboard will be the MSI P67A-GD55, with the Intel I-5 2500K unlocked CPU.
    PSU will be the Corsair HX650.
    My question is, if I put in 2x2GB DDR3 Dual Channel Corsair Memory sticks with a voltage of 1.65V, will it be ok for this mother board?

  • Computer recognizes 8GB of ram, but only uses 30% of it?

    I have installed 8GB ram into my computer. Both my BIOS and system properties state I can use all 8GB of it. However- even when I put my computer under huge strain, I've never seen it go higher that 30-31%. It idles on about %20, so that means when I put strain on it, it only ever goes up by %10! I have not set a limit in msconfig either.
    It's frustrating me why my computer isn't using all my ram. If anybody has any suggestions, let me know!
    Here's an example: I open photoshop with a huge canvas (A0), and went crazy with a large brush. I've allowed PS to use %75 of my memory. PS lags heavily, yet my ram will not budge higher than 30-31%. Here is a screenshot of it. The ram is the steady blue line.
    I would be extremely thankful if anybody could share any thoughts/information. Thanks

    Okay, now that we've established that Photoshop is using all the RAM you've given it (which can be a lot higher on an 8 GB Windows 7 system, by the way; as much as 90%+), let's discuss the root problem you're having:

    Reading between the lines, I believe what you're saying is that if you paint on a large canvas with a large brush, you're experiencing some delays and non-interactive activity.  But no one here is a mind reader, nor are we sitting with you seeing what you're seeing.
    Please take the time to specifically answer each of these questions:
    Exactly what version of Photoshop are you running?
    How many pixels in your "A0", and what is the bit depth?
    What size brush (in pixels), and how hard (in %)?
    What is the brush Spacing?
    Is it one of the fancy new brushes?
    Are you painting with a tablet or mouse?
    How far behind does Photoshop get (a fraction of a second? seconds?)?
    Do you see the same performance issue with OpenGL enabled or disabled in Edit - Preferences - Performance.
    Have you updated your video driver to ATI's latest 11.2 release from the AMD web site?
    A little more detail would help us help you.
    FYI, I just created an A0 sized RGB image at 150 ppi (7020 x 4965 pixels), 8 bit depth, and painted perfectly interactively on it with a 500 pixel round brush with 1% hardness and 25% Spacing.  However, there is a visible lag of up to about 1/2 second if I increase the brush size to 2500 pixels.  This is on a VERY powerful workstation with ATI 5670 card.

    a 980x stock will outperform a dual Xeon up to 2.8GHZ.
    after that the dual xeons start to win. (2.93 and up)
    it also depends on layer count, effects count and codec and color bit depth. the nastier the project the more the Xeons will do better.
    where a standard AVCHD with 3-5 layers would be better on the 980x (price point per performance)
    note i have not talked about OCing at this point.
    assuming OCing both platforms, 2 xeons @ 4GHz are better than 1 980x @ 4ghz..
    the question is do you need that kind of horsepower. most do not. and its not cheap.
    lastly the system needs to be balanced. it would be foolish to have say a dual xeon @ 4ghz, 12 gig ram and only 3 hdds.
    vs a 980x @4ghz 24gig ram and an 8 drive raid.

    Hi all,
    Am thinking of upgrading my system with the following components:
    P67A-GD55 motherboard
    G.Skill RipJaws memory (2 x 4GB)
    Scythe Mugen 2 Rev. B cooler
    Does anyone know for sure if these are all compatible - that is, the memory will fit with the cooler attached? Is it OK if the cooler covers 2 memory slots, and I only use the outer slots? (Obviously I'd rather avoid this but it would be acceptable)

    Suggest you consider the Zalman that HU16E is using and then rather get some low profile mem modules like the Crucial Ballistix instead or Corsair XMS3

  • Problem with K8N - Disk Read Errors

    Hey folks,
    I am really at wits end here...
    I just recently trashed TWO 160GB seagate SATA drives AND an Abit KV8-MAX3 motherboard and replaced them with a MSI K8N Neo Platinum and ONE Maxtor 160bg SATA drive...I did this because I kept getting constant crashes until one day it crashed and BOTH drives failed.
    Well, I reassembled the "new" pc on friday and it's been running GREAT until this morning. This morning I go into my office and I hear a very low volume beep(I'm not even sure it was from the pc speaker..do HDDs beep?). I tried to bring up the display but the computer is locked up. Ctrl-Alt-Del doesn't work and power down doesn't work so I hit the reset switch...
    I now get a Disk Read Error!!! (Note, this is what happened to the other two drives in the othe board too)
    I only tried to reboot once and haven't tried any other diagnostics yet but I wanted to get some ideas before I start digging into the system again. I am close to trashing the whole system and just buying some crappy Dell or other pre-assembled crap. Please convince me not to go this route.

    The system is NOT overclocked. I have pretty much left the bios alone except to disable onboard audio, floppy and IDE controllers.
    Hrmm, I think I did use the MSI cables for the SATA connections. I can get new cables, what do you recomend? How do I knwo a good cable from a bad cable?

    I have been advised to get a full size case rather than a midi. Any other advice would be greatly appreciated!

    The advice to get a bigger case is correct. That GTX 670 will be a very tight squeeze inside that Antec 902 case due to the way the interior of that case itself was designed: The hard drives will interfere with the motherboard's expansion slots, restricting the length of those cards that will fit to only 9.5 inches long. Unfortunately, although a reference GTX 670 is about 9 inches long, higher-end GPUs will not fit if the PCI-e x16 slot is inline with an installed hard drive.
    Speaking of the GTX 670, it is clearly overkill on any system that's equipped with only 16GB of RAM total. Plus, you will need a third-party CPU cooler in order to perform any overckocking whatsoever of the CPU. Unfortunately, the Corsair Vengeance heat spreaders are extremely tall (over 50mm high!) that they will prevent proper installation of any decent tower-style CPU air cooler, especially if all four DIMM slots on the motherboard are being used. You will need 32GB of RAM plus at least a good third-party CPU air cooler such as a Cooler master Hyper 212 EVO (and overclock the CPU to over 4.0GHz) in order for that system to utilize anywhere near the performance capability of the GTX 670.
    Third, you do not need that particular Sound Blaster card at all: Its sound quality is surprisingly poor for a such a pricey discrete add-on sound card (or put it this way, it does not sound anywhere close to sufficiently better than on-motherboard audio to justify its cost).
