Edge 130 overheats and shuts down, but CPU fan runs at low speed

Hi! I am having a problem with my Edge E130, running un Windows 8.1 64-bit.  When running under high load the laptop will at times overheat so much that the system does a hard shutdown - it simply powers off. I installed Speedfan - it shows the CPU at above 90 degrees celsius. The weird thing is that the CPU fan is not running at full speed. I do not know why. Is there a way to fix this? The fan should at least run at full speed. Thanks in advance!

Thank you for the reply! I can't seem to find a black and white sticker. There is a sticker which is black with light grey text. Is it one of these two numbers? label P/N 0B07208CT1 label P/N 0B95210 I am not using any fan control software. Also, my BIOS version is the latest available from Lenovos support site. (when I update the BIOS last time, the fan was running at very high RPMs for a while during the install. So it seems it would be possible for it to run faster)

  • Macbook Air 2011 CPU Maxes Out then Overheats and Shuts Down...

I've been having this problem for a while now but have learned to deal with it with SMC Fan Control to basically keep my fans maxed out at all times. This is obviously not ideal.
The problem is that at any given time some small, random task in activity monitor shows CPU usage that is very high, often at least 50% CPU and other times as high as 120% It has happened with the tasks like dock, safari web content and virtually any other task you can imagine.
For example, I just tried emptying my recycling bin and it hung half way through then my computer shut down. What is going on here?
    Details:
    - Macbook Air mid-2011 running Mavericks
    - Never have more than one app open at any given time, usually just Safari with about 5 tabs, max
    - 3rd party applications running in background include Dropbox, Copy, Backblaze, Flux, Sophos anti virus, Jumpcut, Caffeine and that's it
If I'm doing something like a Time Machine backup, I have to disable Wifi, max out the fans and only then will the Macbook Air remain cool enough to complete the backup, otherwise the Time Machine process maxes out the CPU, overheats and shuts down. This happens with virtually everything now.
How can I start trouble shooting this problem? I've run the hardware and system repair checks with no results, done an SMC reset, etc.
This really seems like a software issue more than anything, like something related to the way tasks/processes are handled...any ideas anyone? This is such an annoying problem!

Do the problems also occur in "Safe Mode"?
Safe Mode or "Safe Boot" is a troubleshooting mode that bypasses all third party system extensions and loads only required system components. Read about it: Starting up in Safe Mode
You must disable FileVault before you can start your Mac in Safe Mode.
Starting your Mac in Safe Mode will take longer than usual, graphics will not render smoothly, audio is disabled on some Macs, and some programs (iTunes for example) may not work at all.
Merely starting your Mac in Safe Mode is not intended to resolve the problem, it's to observe its performance without certain additional components.
To end Safe Mode restart your Mac normally. Shutdown will take longer as well.

  • Need help? My laptop overheats and shuts down when up loading

I installed Premier Elements 8 on Vista and finished my first video and when I try to upload through the share option to youtube Before 1/2 way my laptop overheats and shuts down. I have tried several times. I tried pluging laptop directly in to network so I was not uploading wireless. No luck. I also tried turning my screen down so it would make less heat. I dont know what else to try.

What is happening is that the CPU and the HDD's are being stressed more than with most other operations. This is common and can be observed in places like Speedfan and Task Manager. There are a lot of files being written to, and read from. This is especially hard, if one only has a single internal HDD, as it must do so very much, and is being asked to do it all at the same time.
In general, editing Video is about the toughest task that one can ask of a computer. The Export phase is about as tough as editing gets. If one is editing AVCHD footage, the CPU usage goes up even higher and almost exponentially!
What you observe is not a fault of the software, but just how all NLE software must work.
Unfortunately, most laptops are not properly equiped with adequate cooling to begin with. They also usually have a single HDD. That was why I went with an extreme "gaming" laptop to start, and then modified it for NLE work. It works fine, but I had to add the cooling pad, and Speedfan.
    Good luck,
    Hunt

  • Iphone overheats and shuts down when charging ?

    hello,
since i have had my iphone 4s replace in april my iphone overheats and shuts down when charging?
    can anyone help?

My 4S has recently shut down twice so far due to heat: Once in 100+ deg. in Arizona, when I left the phone in direct sunlight too long (that'll kill anything), and once just today, 96 deg. in Colorado, with the phone in my shirt chest pocket, not in direct sunlight. Each time, the phone was also encased in the hermetically sealed "Lifeproof" case, which probably contributed to heat build-up. If you're using a similar case with yours, either make sure to keep the phone in a cooler, shaded area, or just take it out of the case when the temps are this high. Definitely don't leave it in direct sunlight! In my case, although the 4S seems more heat-sensitive than my previous iPhones, I still find this behavior within acceptable parameters. But I wonder whether the overheating episodes might cause permanent damage...?

  • My 4s overheats and shuts down

When taking videos my iphone 4S overheats and shuts down after 6 to 10 minutes.  I took it out of its case so it's a white naked phone but the heats still does not disapate.  Any thoughts?

Well the iPhone will shut down if it overheats .Since taking videos is processor intensive and screen is on , depending on outdoor temperature it might reach it's temperature limit and shut down .

I suspect you have hardware problem with a fan sensor. Doing a software install will not help the machine needs to be taken in for service. If you run Apple Hardware Test in Extended Mode it should reveal the error code. If it does not then run AHT an additional 2-3 times to be sure in Extended Mode. Each pass will take about 30-60 minutes.

  • Often I will leave my office and return to find the fan running at max speed and the computer is unresponsive

I also have a MacPro3,1 (2009) I believe and just started experiencing similar issues as described here.
I have scheduled sleep and start cycles and often I will leave my office and return to find the fan running at max speed and the computer is unresponsive or I find the computer booted in to disk utility mode.
I also often loose ethernet connectivity and have to try renewing DHCP lease several times before it will finally work.
Has anyone found solutions for this. I have looked at the console errors right before shutdown and don't really see anything fishy. Here are the last couple of lines before it looks like it shutdown.

Mac Pro early 2009 is Mac Pro4,1, anyway, I think you need to boot into recovery mode, launch Disk Utility, then select startup volume and run repair disk.
Xcode is the latest one, by the way?

  • Incredible overheats and shuts down using GPS.

My phone overheats and gets in a shutdown reboot loop when using GPS. It did this while plugged into car charger. I concluded it was overcharging. Today I tried using GPS without charger. There was direct sun hitting the screen (I'm in Florida). It soon shut down and got in the Terrible Loop. I've read a lot about this online and there are many different experiences and views. The phone does not do this inside the house with a wall charger.
Does anyone know if Verizon has a definitive answer for this. I've read of other customers with this problem getting replacement phones that do the same thing. Someone speculated it was the original screen used for the Incredible (made by Samsung).
I checked on getting a Garmin navigation system and read they also can overheat and shutdown. I prefer to use my phone but don't want to have to drive holding it in front of the air conditioner with an umbrella over it to use Google navigation.
Any info and advice are appreciated.
    Thanks to all.

Marchare, you will want to make sure that you have the right fuse in your car for your cigarette lighter, also are you using the charger meant for the phone or some third party charger? Sometimes the charger can go faulty and cause problems, usually not sending power, but occasionally it can send too much. Also , the phone will shut down if the battery is overheating, usually you will get a orange-green blinking  before it gets to this point.
Personally, I don't plug my phone in while using the GPS until it starts getting low on the battery. While they sell the carmount, it isn't advised to use the gps in direct sunlight either, contradictory I know. When your phone overheats and shuts off, you will want to let it cool down before trying to turn it on again. If this doesn't solve the problem then you likely need a new battery or perhaps even a new phone.

  • V100 overheats and shuts down; shuts down during system diagnostics

I have a V100 that has been overheating and shutting down when i run applications such as Photoshop and MS Office 2003. It has a 2Gb intel duo processor and 2Gb of RAM. I downgraded to Windows XP with service pack 2. The warranty expired in July 08 and until 3-4 months ago didn't have this problem. It happens with or without the battery, typically I have it plugged in. I took it apart partially and cleaned out any dust by the fan and such, but there was very little. I tried to run diagnostics on it through Lenovo System Toolbox (used to be called PC Dr.). During the system stress test it overheated and shutdown. I then ran the full system scan and when it got to the multicore test for the processor, it again overheated and shutdown. I'm not sure if this is an indication that the processor is failing or if maybe it just needs some thermal paste or if there is another problem going on. Any help would be appreciated.

    Hi
    Possibly its high temperature issue.
High temperature causes a shut down in order to protect the hardware from damage.
But the question is why the temperature increases to critical level?
One reason might be a graphic card driver from nvidia page. Such driver does not contain overheating protection. So you have to use the driver from Toshiba page.
    I see you did it
Well, the notebook seems to be a new one.so usually the dust should not be a problem and the fans should work properly
One tip; please ensure that you have enough free space around the notebook to ensure good air circulation...
However, I recommend asking a ASP in your country for an check maybe its hardware related issue.

  • ZV6000 Overheats and shuts down

My ZV6100 has started to overheat and shutdown. I have noticed the cooling fans are not coming on as the computer gets hot. However after overheating and shutting down if I wait a few minutes and restart the computer both fans come on and stay on. So it's like this, when I start the computer and its cold the cooling fans come on for a short time (at startup) and then go off. As the computer warms up and then gets hot the fans do not come on as they should to cool it back down. Any ideas?

Try a hard reset of the bios, power down, unplug the power cord, remove the battery, hold the power button down for 30 seconds, insert battery and connect power cord, power up, see if anything changes.

  • TS1367 What to do when I do not hear the fan in my Powerbook G4 and it overheats and shuts down?

My Powerbook G4 shut down in the middle of a power point creation. After a couple of days it booted up again. However, I do not hear the fan running the way it used to. I believe that the fan stopped working. I can use it but if kept on for more than 1/2 hour, it overheats and locks up. How do I get this fixed?

Since Apple no longer is supporting the PB G4, you'll either have to find a fan for it on your own or find someone else to work on it for you.
