While I don't know the problem your computer has I did want to mention beginning with the current line of iMacs Apple is using a different system for the HD heat sensor. They are no longer using a heat sensor glued to the HD, this means your previous experience isn't valid for the current line of machines.
My suggestion, call Apple Care when the open your machine should still have some time left on the phone support.

  • Help!! iBOOK makes whirring and flickering noises and wont boot up

I had noticed that my iBOOK G4 had been getting louder recently, making an increasingly aggressive whirring noise. Then one day it went crazy, it sounded like it was 'thinking' very hard and it froze and wouldn't even shut down. I got it to shut down eventually but now it wont start up. It rarely gets beyond the apple logo and just sits there making very loud whirring noises and it sounds like the hard drive is continually 'thinking'. It did manage to boot up fully once but soon froze again, the whirring noise getting even louder.
Is this a hard drive failure? Is there any hope for it to come back on long enough to recover some files or will I just have to give up and replace it?

Hey Sarah and welcome to Apple Discussions,
    Well first try this site:

That noise you hear sounds like the fan.

  • MacBook Pro Hard drive is making weird noises and slow

its important that you understand what has led to these issues. I first was witing an essay on my MacBook. Whole thing dies, screen freezes and entire thing crashes. i have no choice but to force it off by holding the power button... Then the fun begins. I log in and it gives me a circle with a slash basically telling me no you can't use your computer.. Ok.... Let me just get apple support on chat... after 3 painful hours, they even had no idea what was happening... I erased my hard drive after 4 repairs and verifies.. looked fine sure... Redownload os x 10.10 bam, the issues begin, first you hear a weird high pitched noise that varies from just heard by me to my entire household... Lovely Sure makes doing college work harder in the morning as my roommate can hear it and he's under 40 blankets. Next the slowness, niw when I mean slow I mean every 5 seconds I get the pinwheel because it can't multitask correctly. I mean wow I can't even go to the apple in the top corner without it attempting to "load" the menu. even just on pages (which was a nightmare to download I'll get to that soon) Itll give me the pinwheel after a few words... App Store, broken. I tried to redownload pages iMovie etc. 40 clicks for each because they each showed an error occur.. Some right when I click some when it was downloaded... 1.99 GB and then it tells me it can't install... Then, it's a nightmare to log in because start up take 5 to 30 minutes depending on how ever much this machine wants to infuriate me. It's only 7 months old, there is no excuse for this, and I'm very disappointed, now before I take me and this machine to geek squad located in Best Buy can anyone locate with any knowledge why this thing is behaving so disturbinG. Please excuse the horrible spelling, I had to  do this on my iphone and download google chrome because Safari doesn't support apple community When asking questions.

Your storage device is probably faulty.  It would be helpful if you indicated the EXACT model/year MBP that you have.
    Ciao.

  • Hard Drive Noise and Slow Speeds

I have a Mac Pro 2 x 2 GHz, with a standard 250 GB drive. One thing I noticed from the beginning is how loud the drive was, and after a few months of usage it seemed to become louder as well as much slower - even for ordinary tasks such as web browsing.
    Running +time dd if=/dev/urandom of=tst.lol bs=10240 count=100000+ I get a whopping 148.1 seconds, which puts my drive at 6913813 bytes/sec >> 6.9 MB/sec!!
Is it safe to assume the drive is toast, and I should back up my data, then get a replacement from Apple?

The OEM drives are good for an emergency boot system maybe.
Most people buy drives 3rd party, and add/replace as soon as they get Mac Pro.
It probably has errors and needs repair and a good thorough zero-all to the entire drive though.
The front drive will be audible. New drives like WD are very quiet. I would get a couple 500GB @ $109 ea for now.

  • Profile-sync-daemon and slow boot

Hi, I write here cause i'm facing a problem with the profile-sync-daemon, that is loaded on boot by systemd.
Some days ago it started slowing down my system boot: I have silent mode enabled and appears a text line showing "A job is start is running" related to psd that take 8-9 seconds.
What can be the cause? Some days ago I started syncing my favorites, history and bookmarks on Google Account (I use Chrome in tablet and phone and Chromium on computer), can this issue be related with it?
    Thanks in advance.

    $ psd p
    Profile-sync-daemon v5.45.1 on Arch Linux.
    Systemd service is currently active.
Systemd resync service is currently active.
Psd will manage the following per /etc/psd.conf settings:
    browser/psname: chromium/chromium
    owner/group id: mons/100
    sync target: /home/mons/.config/chromium
    tmpfs dir: /tmp/mons-chromium
    profile size: 105M
    $ systemd-analyze blame| grep psd

  • IMac crashing randomly and slow boot time.

My mid 2011 27" 2.7GHz i5 iMac has been crashing/powering off to black screen randomly. Apple just replaced the logic board and power supply last week. I have not had any more crashes yet, but on startup I get a white screen that will last for 1 whole minute at times before I finally get the Apple logo to appear. Can someone please tell me about how long my boot time should be and what could be the problem. Also my Mac keeps not seeing my External Hard drive Time Machine Backup. It will be working fine and then act like the drive is not connected. This seems to have started after Apple replaced my logic board and power supply. This is my first Mac ever and Im starting to get really frustrated!

When you see a beachball cursor or the slowness is especially bad, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.

  • Mac making lots of "thinking" noises and slow in opening apps

My 100G space came up as full last night so I freed up about 15g. space, but now today I notice it is going way slow, taking forever to open or show data in files - eg if I click on the master application folder - the names of indiv. folders show but file content on right doesn't come up until about 30 secs, and the computer itself is making all sorts of whirring/clicking type sounds which i called "thinking" but it's as if the memory is still full and is operating at half it's speed.
I have a 2.16 GHz intel core duo processor, and memory is 2 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM.
Get info shows:  Capacity of 99.69GB, avail is 14.11 GB
Any tips on what has happened since last night to today? I thought it would be running faster and accessing files really easily.
I just got a pop up saying:  Your iDisk is unavailable.  Make sure you are logged in to your MObile ME acct, then try again to access your iDisk.
COuld this be the problem? I've never seen this before.    What is my iDisk, and what does it do?

Thank you - is this what you asked me to do?   Excuse my limited computer abilities.

  • X79A GD45 Slow start and slow boot into windows with SSD

Im having some major issues with my X79A GD45 board, When I start the system it takes about 30 seconds sometimes more for something to appear on the screen and from cold boot it starts stops and then starts again before loading.
Once its loaded it is taking forever to get into windows Im running 2 6gb/s SSD's in raid and the windows logo is able to appear and flash 3 or 4 times before I even get into windows.
Ive tried it with just a single drive and re installations of windows but get exacly the same thing its driving me mad as Ive spent so much money on this machine. Details of my system are below:
    MSI X79A GD45 v1.0 Bios 1.6
    Intel I7 3820
    Corsair Vengeance 16gb 1600 Cl9
    2 x GTX 680 in SLi
Creative Soundblaster 3D Recon Fatality Sound Card
    2 x Sandisk Extreme 240gb in Raid 0
    Silvertone Strider 850w PSU
    LG Bluray Writer

Updated the SSD Firmwares and it made no difference. Ive already tried single drives and the same. The drives are installed into SATA 1 and SATA2 ports the 6gb/s ones. The hang time is atleast 20 seconds at the splash screen alone before loading into windows. I checked the event log for booting and this is what it showed:

  • IBook makes a nasty screaming noise and wont boot!

What is the verdict, it sounds like the cooling fan bearing is shot and the machine makes an awful noise on startup but it does not seem to be able to read from disk - so maybe it is not the fan after all!?

    Hi CDJA,
This can be caused by the heatsink Fan.
more than likely, the heatsink fan's axis has been damaged or misaligned.
You can take this to a service center near you and see if you can get this fixed under warranty.
Please let us know if this solves your issue
    I am an HP employee.

  • GD80: Boot from eSata? (and slow booting)

I recently built a set of workstations for our office with p55 GD80 motherboards.  To do some testing, I wanted to do a clean Ubuntu OS install onto an external drive using eSata.
    Here's the issue:
    - The motherboard detects the eSata drive during the boot sequence, but it may do so very slowly or even hang (code 0075).  This has been observed on two separate machines.
    - The F11 boot menu does not list the eSata drive as a choice to boot from.  Disconnecting the internal drive and removing all other bootable media to try to force it to use the eSata fails with the standard "no boot media" message.
    - The drive in questions boots and operates fine when I hook it up to internal SATA (or in my case, via the SATA to eSATA breakout pannel)
    Questions:
1: Is the ability to boot from eSata supposed to be a working feature?  These are the first machines where I've had it.
2: Are these issues something that might be fixed by a BIOS update?  (I will update here later with my current bios version when I get into work again, but the motherboards were all purchased from Newegg at the same time in September.)
3: If not, is this a known issue?
    Thanks in advance.

You could easily prepare and USB Flash Drive for a safe DOS-based BIOS Flash on any Windows based system and then use then boot from that flash drive on the target board in order to update the BIOS.  These are some pretty straight-forward instructions:
    https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=142371.msg1062484#msg1062484
... and of course, the BIOS File will have a different name for your board and so will the actual flash command.

  • Updating to 10.6.4: slow boot (10+ mins) and unannounced shutdowns

    Hey guys,
I've been having some issues with my trusty MacBook lately and I'm kinda lost on what to do next. Let's start with a short description of the problems:
    1. About a week ago the charger was not working sometimes when I connected it (cleaned the connectors--> fixed).
    2. A bit after that I started having unannounced shutdowns with about 30 mins of estimated battery power left. So i guess the battery was really empty at this stage, still weird
    3. Five days ago, I upgraded to 10.6.4 Since then when I reboot I get this progress bar that loads, looks kinda like a firmware upgrade. It takes 11 mins to get passed this screne (timed it). Have this every time I boot the laptop.
So, the shutdowns and slow bootup are annoying, here's the things I tried:
    *battery/shutdown issue:*
    1. Recalibrated the battery
    2. reset SMC
    3. reset PRAM
    System profiler says:
    Charge Information:
    Charge remaining (mAh): 2880
    Fully charged: No
    Charging: Yes
    Full charge capacity (mAh): 3600
    Health Information:
    Cycle count: 385
    Condition: Replace Soon
    *Slow bootup:*
    1. Ran Yasu to clean system, local and user cache.
    2. Checked login items and removed a couple of things
(now only have Growlhelper, Alfred, Dropbox and Quicksilver)
    3. Ran Disk utility --> verify disk. It says I have errors, need to boot from my Mac OS X disc to fix that.
    4. Checked system.log in Console, but output is different from what I expected. There's about 11 mins in booting where nothing is reported.

I know lots of info, maybe two different problems also. What concerns me the most: could this be a sign my hardware is failing?
Im in no position to fix much, since I'm on work placement in a very remote part of Nicaragua for the next 10 weeks :'( No access to alternative hardware, apple stores or even the Snow Leopard install disc.
tips about what to try next?

    Oh oh!

  • PC with slow boot and pc speed, sudden high pc usage, delay-freeze when opening/performing something

    Hi,
    Before everything, two things:
    1. I'm not a native english speaker so i may have some problems to speak properly/as objective as i'd like to.
2 . I'm writing in this section because i don't know the cause of my pc issues so i can't categorize them.
Now, my computer is a Toshiba satellite L755-S5244, Windows 7 Home premium 64 bits, Intel pentium CPU B940 2Ghz, 4 Gb RAM, and I'm writing this message using it.
I bought the laptop in December of 2011 and at the beggining it was working normally. Someone else used the computer these last months and he left the pc without antivirus protection; when i installed one (Avast) and start to analyze the pc it suddenly shutted down. It wasn't able to boot, so after some trys to restore/enter in safe mode I finally used the Toshiba Recovery Wizard to get the pc to the original factory settings. The process was sucessfull, so the first thing i did after finish the process was install a new antivirus (this time i used Kaspersky Pure) and the the analysis showed no threats as i expected.
However, before the recovery process i realized of some slow performance on the computer, like talking a bit too long to opening files or menus, control panel... almost anything was opening with a little delay even just after start the pc. This problem continued even after the recovery process. Also, an online game -League of legends- which was working fine when i just bought the pc, developed some issue: the screen and the audio randomly frezees for like 3-5 seconds. These problems seems to be related between each other.
But that wasn't all. After the recovery to the original factory settings, i just installed a few things:
-Kaspersky Pure 2.0, CCleaner (free), Mozila Firefox, and League of legends.
Later I also installed Microsoft Office 2010.
The antivirus showed no threats. The game kept with the freeze thing.
And 2 days ago i was playing league of legends and downloading Skype when the pc suddenly got too slow. I restarted it. After the restart it took a long time to boot, and before the windows login screen loaded there was a black screen where only the mouse was showed; the start-up was slow too, (this one showed a blue screen with the mouse too -but not BSOD-) all this took like 15-20 minutes; that never happened before so i restarted the computer again but the problem was the same: slow boot, slow desktop start-up (let's not even talk about opening something).
I went to the repair menu (f8) and try to restore the system but it didn't change anything. I checked for memory issues but there wasn't. I looked also for starting problems but the repair didn't find anything. All in there was saying: "the computer performance seems normal", but it wasn't. Like entering to windows in normal mode was talking to long, i tried the safe mode. It was also slow but not that much. When i entered, a system restore which i wasn't able to performance before in normal mode popped-up and said that the system was restored sucessfully to the first restore point -just after the factory recovery, but it apparently didn't fix the slow bot issue.
Even in safe mode the software was working slow so i decided to go for the toshiba recovery wizard again, and looked in here, the forums -and the rest of the net- for problems like mine.
This time the Toshiba Recovery Wizard took like ages to finish. 3 hours just for recovering, and like 7 more hours just installing the drivers. The boot/start-up was still slow, so i think this was the cause of the slow recovery because the wizard restarts the computer a lot.
When the factory settings recovery finished, the first boot was slow, also the start up, the programs, the start menu, the control panel, ... everything was slow the first time i opened it. If i keep using the same program, it seems normal, but randomly freezes if i select some option, of press something (like this browser, google chrome, even now when i'm writing this message or before where i was registering into the forums). As obvious, because this slow performance i'm really not comfortable using this computer.
I used the HDD SDD Alert but it says the HDD is working fine (the hard drive doesn't make weirds sounds, i almost don't hear it at all); also i did a PC Diagnostic with the PC diagnostic tool and everything passed the test. I can't think of virus/malware because i did the recovery wizard, twice. I just installed Avast again and it didn't find anything. With the task manager i noticed of a high pc usage (almost always 100%) was showing for a really short moment when/after the computer freezes.
So, i don't know how to solve this slow performance.
The last thing i did was download those speed-up softwares: SpeedUpMyPc, RegCurePro, SpeedyPC pro and Pareto logic Health Advisor. They scanned the pc for free and found like 100 system performance issues, but I'm not able to use these programms to fix the issues if i dont buy them. Also i'm not even sure if that will fix my problems.
That's why i'm here, looking for a way to identify/fix them. One last thing: all this time i've been checking the temperature of the laptop but is never hot -now is not even warm. Now i'm afraid of restarting the PC again cuz i know it will take a long time to get into a kinda stable performance like right now.
So that's all.  If you read all this, have my thanks. Also, any help would be really appreciated it.
    EDIT:
A new thing happened. When i try to installed league of legends, the setup told me that my hard drive may be corrupted and the file won't copy, i skip it a few times but the installation took a long of time (half hour) and the error kept ocurring.  I hope this can may be a clue about what is happening to my pc.

    Satellite L755-S5244
If you restore the hard disk to its original out-of-the-box contents using Toshiba recovery media and still have trouble, then you know it's not due to software.
the setup told me that my hard drive may be corrupted and the file won't copy, i skip it a few times but the installation took a long of time (half hour) and the error kept ocurring.
In particular, that sort of thing occurs when a hard drive is failing. Time to call Toshiba's tech support at 1-800-457-7777 (from the US) or 1-949-859-4273 (from outside the US).

  • Slow boot and overall system sluggishness.

My Macbook Pro is booting up very slow sometimes. It will take 10-15 minutes to be usable even though there are almost no startup items. It will happen only sometimes, most of the time I will boot in about a minute like it should. Still the system will slow down from time to time, for example the photoshop file open dialogue is extremely slow as is accessing files in the finder.
I already did PRAM and SMC reset and repaired permissions using the restore partition. Below are my EtreCheck results and a bootlog from a slow boot a few days ago.

  • Slow booting Tower and AIO

Both of my Beige G3's are slow booting eg black screen for approx two minutes before they hit the grey screen then everything seems to run normally. Figured it was a problem with memory testing so turned it off in the control panel but that changed nothing. Both have 768MB of PC100 memory.
Both are running OS 9.2, the All-in-one has had a cpu swap to a Sonnet G4 500MHZ zif card with factory jumper positions while the Tower has an Apple G3 450MHZ zif card at 70MHZ system bus. Both had the cuda resets and both have new 7200 rpm hard drives with fresh system installations.
The AIO has also been partitioned and has OSX and OS 9.2 on separate partitions with the X partition being 7.5 GB in the first 8 GB of disk space. The AIO is using it's built in video with a 4MB card to bump it up to 6MB of VRAM.
The tower only has the main partition with 9.2 and a scratch disk for PS. The tower is running an ATI Radeon 7000 mac edition video card.
Oh and they have also had brand new PRAM batteries installed so I'm stumped at this point as to what it is or is this normal for both?
    Kevin

What version of OSX are you running?
I had a similar issue with my Beige G3 minitower (G3/500 upgrade; 768MB RAM; 80 + 120G Maxtor 7200 rpm drives; ATI Radeon 9200) with 10.2.8; we called it "55 seconds of midnight." However, mine would not show the gray apple screen. After just under a minute, the monitor would come up and be about 2/3 of the way through the progress bar. Other than that, teh computer ran fine.
There are a couple of issues at play. The Beige G3 ALWAYS boots initially to a screen res of 640x480, then switches to the user-selected res after the prefs load. If the monitor or video card cannot support 640x480, you get black until your user prefs load.
Some have reported this after replacing the original hard drive. Others say it happens when they installed a PCI video card. You've done both.
Try temporarily removing RAM until you have LESS than 192MB installed and see if it gets better. If it does, then this Apple article applies:

The bottom line for me is that it's a Jaguar problem. When I installed Panther via XPostFacto v3.1, the problem went away. The old beast runs under Panther much better than it did under Jag.

  • OSX 10.75 Macbook Pro 30 Minute Boot and Slow After Clean Install

    Here is my problem.
I recently purchased a mabook pro which was dropped with the intentions of fixing the screen.
I was able to initially install OSX with Internet recovery, then for some reason on reboot the password would not work.
I was able to fix the password problem, but the extremely slow boot time persists.
This is a fresh install so I am not sure why it is so slow.

So I figured out what the problems was.
The Hardrive was going bad. I had another hardrive that I knew was good taken from another Mac, I swapped them. With the other drive the computer booted up fine. I later took the drive to the Genius bar and the confirmed what I already knew.
