Edge Network

Hello,
I rarely, if ever, use the smart phone capabilities of my iPhone when I'm not on wifi. Would it make sense for me to switch to Edge for the longer battery life? Would this have any adverse effect my data plan (200mb)?
Thanks,
Fred

"Would it make sense for me to switch to Edge for the longer battery life? "
http://www.apple.com/batteries/iphone.html
From that article:
"Turn off 3G: Using 3G cellular networks loads data faster, but may also decrease battery life, especially in areas with limited 3G coverage. To disable 3G, from the Home screen choose Settings > General > Network and set Enable 3G to Off. You will still be able to make and receive calls and access cellular data networks via EDGE or GPRS where available.

No.

  • Cannot receive calls when using Edge network for data?

    Hi,
This afternoon someone was trying to reach me urgently and all her calls to my iPhone went straight into my voicemail. My phone never rang and never showed missed calls.
I spoke to Aaron at Apple, thinking there might be a problem with my phone, and he told me that when the Edge network is in use, then the phone will not ring and calls will be routed straight to voicemail.
Is this really expected behavior? I was not aware of it.
    iPhone 8GB

This has nothing to do with EDGE all other phones will notify you and pause the connection. i posted about this 2 days ago but the thread got deleted.
here is a video that proves this, the noise is from the GSM but the user is clearly on the edge network.
    http://youtube.com/watch?v=NMm2AY-_TTY
this is from Tier 2 suport at Apple.
Everyone having this issue should call 1-800-MY iPhon. Ask to speak to Tier II support, the person you get may try to help, and may need to give you a case number. You'll probably have to wait a while on hold.
I just spent an hour on the phone with Tier I & II. The tier I guy started by saying that when you use EDGE it will always go to voicemail. I told him, I was on a user forum & some people said they don't have the issue. He then tested it on his phone & experienced the direct to v-mail issue. We talked about how this was a real problem & how both of our nokia phones didn't have this issue (he actually had the E-61 also). He gave me a case number & transferred my to tier II. The tier II guy told me that this was a software issue. That a pop-up needs to be designed into the software to allow the user the option to disconnect the data connection & accept the voice call, or not. I told him that I'd read on a user forum that some users get voice calls while using EDGE. He said that if they are using you tube the call will automatically interrupt & switch out of you tube. We then tested this on my iPhone & it worked (i.e. the call interupted you tube). He said the software currently decides to disconnect data or send calls to voice mail during EDGE transmissions based on what the user is doing. Phone calls take priority over you tube & widgets (stock & weather)but safari and e-mail take priority over phone calls. He said the thought was, it would be more annoying to users to be in the middle of sending an e-mail and having mail disconnected for a phone call, than having the call go to voicemail. The ideal solution is to have a choice (like other phones allow) but right now the iPhone software does not have a pop-up designed allowing the user to accept the call or keep the data connection. (He seemed to be familiar with this on other phones while being tethered to a macbook to use their data connections & getting voice calls during downloads).
He said he was submitting this to the engineering group & said the more people that call tier II about this & submit it as an issue via online feedback, the higher priority it will get to be addressed in the first software update. So if you want to see this fixed start calling and submitting the issue http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphone.html in as much detail as possible (specifically say that other existing phones Nokia S60s etc. have this function).
and here is a thread that is discussing this serious problem. note it is now many pages long.

  • Is there a way to stop the Edge network from activating?  Overseas Travel

I am travelling in Europe and I do not want the EDGE network to be activated. But I can't find a way to turn off the Edge network. At $1 per KB, this is going to get expensive. I am using WiFi when I can, but the rest of the time, it's on Edge and with Yahoo push email, I end up with 50+ KB per day of traffic.
Does anyone have any ideas? When I leave the wifi area, I turn off my email. But there still seems to be traffic on the edge network (under Settings > Usage). I prefer to do my email only in a wifi zone.
    Anyone have any ideas?

I agree. I am currently in the UK and am contending with this. i turned off my e-mail as well but I will be contacting AT&T for a credit on all of the data transfer I invouluntarily incurred while here.

  • No WIFI OR Edge network after 3.0 update on first generation

I'm working with an original 1st generation iPhone.
I updated which seemed to go well (compared to horror stories I heard from my 3G friends earlier this afternoon). After the update I noticed some major issues:
    1. I can not connect to WIFI networks
    2. I can not even connect to the Edge network (therefore the internet just straight up doesn't work).
    3. I can not access voice mail.
    4. It cleared all of my text message conversations.
    5. It cleared all of my recent calls.
    6. It reset my settings in a few of my apps.
I CAN make calls and send/receive texts.
I can live with having to deal with 4, 5, and 6, but not having 1, 2, and 3, is just ridiculous.
    Can anyone help?

I also have the original iPhone and I am also in Pittsburgh and my EDGE network is down. I did not get the software update though. Maybe the storms last night caused an issue with AT&T's network. Please let me know if you hear anything on this. Thanks!

  • Usage of Edge Network on Weekends...

Is the usage of the Edge network for e-mail and internet free on the weekends since minutes are unlimited on the weekends?

Technically it is not free, each iPhone plan has a unlimited data plan included in the monthly bill
So each month you pay to have unlimited access to the EDGE network, you not not have to pay anything extra for using any of the widgets, the Mail app or Safari

  • Speed of EDGE network

    Hey, everybody,
I'm curious...is the EDGE network really that slow on the iPhone? Does its connection speed affect the complete rendering of web pages (i.e., are the pages only partially loaded sometimes), or is it just a matter of how long it takes to render those pages?
Come on...how bad is EDGE, really?

EDGE is not anything to tout, for sure. Very similar to dial-up speeds. In areas with weak signals, it could be even longer as the unit has to request a resend bad data packets (as I experienced on my Nokia 9300). One thing to keep in mind with some of these pages that may never come up and freeze. iPhone does have Flash, but does not have Java capabilities. This may be the issue.
As for the future, the 3G is the network to have, but the battery life will be compromised. I am hoping for the UHF spectrum to be the future solution, as this can be used for the broadcast to the phone and the phone can upload via the current Edge network.
By then, the iPhone will be likely priced at $139 and come with a $300 ringtone credit for downloading all the greatest ringtones from Apples future iRingtones website.
    Cheers

  • 2504 WLC on edge network for guest wifi

I have a 2504 WLC with a 1042 AP and I have it placed on my edge Cisco 3750 switch.
I have the management interface of the WLC set on my WAN IP 71.x.x.x subnet range, and I have the WLC doing DHCP duties with a DHCP scope of 192.168.X.0. I have my DNS servers set on external DNS servers out on the Internet.
I have two Cisco 3845 Routers on my edge network - one for each ISP with BGP protocol.
Since my native VLAN is 71.x.x.x, I added a sub interface on my main core router and gave it a 192.168.x.1 255.255.255.0 address for the gateway. Also, I added ip prefix-list iBGP seq 10 permit 192.168.x.0/24 le 32 to my main core router. On my secondary ISP router I added
ip prefix-list iBGP seq 10 permit 192.168.X.0/24 le 32, and ip prefix-list OUT seq 10 permit 192.168.x.0/24 statements.
I added VLAN 10 to my edge switch and gave it IP 192.168.x.2 255.255.255.0, and the switchports that my core router and my WLC are connected to the edge switch, are in trunk mode with encapsulation dot1q 10. The switchport on my edge switch that the AP is connected to is in switchport access mode.
I can connect to the wifi with a 192.168.x.x IP address on my laptop, but I cannot get any Internet access.
Is it possible to have the DHCP scope be in a different subnet than my WAN IP subnet, and allow guests to get to the external Internet only? Do I need to put the WLC somewhere internal on my network i.e. the DMZ and then tunnel the traffic out to the Internet with no Internal network access?
Thanks for any help you can provide.

right, and how does a 'normal/current' user access the internet?  Somwhere going to your ISP there should be some sort of NAT statement when you send interwebs traffic.
if your ISP is taking care of all of that for you, you probably need to let them know you added the subnet so they can do the NAT.

  • I receive Yahoo mail on Edge network but can't reply...

    Hi,
Thanks in advance for your help.
As my subject line states, I get all my Yahoo mail from 2 different Yahoo accounts just fine but cannot reply on the edge network. If I have a WiFi signal I can.
The error I get says "Cannot Send Mail" "The connection to the outgoig server "(null)" failed.
    Any ideas?

    Hello HMoorhouse,
You were correct in attempting to edit the SMTP settings. SMTP is the server that allows outgoing mail. I would recommend deleting the mail account as a whole and restarting.
Once the device has been restarted, got to Settings>Mail, Contacts, and Calandars
When in "Mail, Contacts, and Calandars" hit Add Account.
You will have mutiple options so you want to select "Other".
Now you need your server settings for both the incoming and outgoing mail server.
If you enter this exactly how your provider gives them to you, it should work. Make sure you know if it is pop or imap, the port number, in incoming and outgoing servers, use SSL on/off and use authentication on/off etc.
If you have all the correct settings accoridng to the provider you may want to restore the phone then try again. Restoring the phone will factor out any Apple software issues.
If you ahve questions let me know.
    Best Regards,
    Jordan Park

  • Has anyone had a problem connecting to Edge network?

Got my phone yesterday and it worked flawlessly. I drained the battery and charged it over night.
So I wake up today and try to see what the weather is going to be. It says error updating, so Im like w t f? So I try to open a webpage(using edge) and it doesn't load google and the iPhone says "Safari can't open the page because it an't fid the server."
Has anyone had this issue? Could it be the Edge network or my phone its self? I used the WiFi just now and it worked fine but I need edge to be working.
    Thanks

When it happens to me a have to do a reset of the iphone and it fixes it. Hold down the top button and the round button on the buttom of the screen together for 10 seconds until the iphone powers off. Next hold down the power buttong for a second or 2 untill you get the apple logo on the screen.
    Must be a bug.

  • Edge Network vs. Wi-Fi

I was in an area today that had a free Wi-Fi hotspot. When I launched Safari I was asked if I wanted to join the network, and I of course said yes, since it's faster than Edge.
However, the Edge network stayed on, and Safari continued to use the Edge network. I checked settings, and it indicated that I was logged onto the Wi-Fi.
Is there anyway to make sure that when you are in an area with Wi-Fi, it uses the Wi-Fi and not the Edge network?
    Thanks in advance.

I'm having the same problem. I have wifi. Its checked off in the settings. Its says its connected. But I see that the E icon "edge" still remains. It never switches over to wifi.
    what should I do?
is there a way, button combinations, that i could do a reboot on the device.

  • Odd issue w/ imap mail reading over EDGE network..

I've got my own mailserver at home (exim/cyrus) that is configured for SSL/TLS and works fine (w/ the iphone) via wifi.. However, if I have the iPhone talking on the Edge network (wifi disabled) and fire up the mail application, I'm unable to read messages.. However, I can get new mail counts & message headers from my imap server w/o any problems at all.. However, if I click on a single message, it says "loading..." and never is able to get the message body -- it can stay that way (loading) for a considerable amount of time (>20 minutes) and never throws an error. If it's capable of reading from the imap server for folders, message headers and whatnot, why can't it read message bodies? Doesn't make any sense. Any ideas?

Ok.. Good 'ol Murhpy's law I guess.. After I post about it not working, it just started working in the past 5 minutes.. All of the emails that I could NOT get loaded are now loading just fine.. Everything appears to be working now.. I'll keep an eye on it just in case it starts acting up again.. Go figure!

  • Can't send or receive e-mail on EDGE network

Just recently I can't send or receive e-mail on the EDGE network - both work fine on WIFI though.
Safari and all other features work fine on EDGE and WIFI so it's an e-mail issue. I am using an IMAP account, no SSL, Incoming port 143, Outgoing port 587. After trying to connect for some time, sometimes I get a "cannot connect to server" message but usually no message at all.
I would really appreciate some advice

Am in Olympia WA for the holiday - I live in San Diego - I agree started two days ago. I spent 3 hours with Apple Support - they conferenced in ATT and they were no help. Eventually - I did a restore and did not change a thing. Am using 1.1.2.
Something happened late monday as it was fine sat - mon night. Since I do not live in WA - I assume things will be OK when I return to CA. Giving ATT a call might help - but you will definately need to get it escalated to a higher level.
I have sent this forum link to the great apple T3 support person that spent so much time with me - hopefully he will forward on to ATT and it will get resolved for all of you. Something did change on Monday night.

  • IPAD2 Edge network getting dropped whenever i turn-off

IPAD2 is latching to my Tata DoCoMo network in India but Edge network is getting dropped whenever i turn-off and it needs a removal & re-insert of the mirco SIM again...how to address this issue?

What have you done to troubleshoot thus far?

  • Can you use the data while NOT on the EDGE network?

I am wondering if when I travel through SD and ND I will be able to use my data (email, web, maps...etc.) I am in Minneapolis on the EDGE network, but I'm concerned that in Sioux Falls, SD no a GPRS network I won't be able to use 1/2 the functions on my phone.
Before release the rumor was that it would work, but has anyone actually tried it yet?

So essentially you're asking... if there's no Wi-Fi or EDGE coverage will you be able to use the data network features of the phone?
In short... from my experience the answer appears to be "no, it won't work." Allow me to elaborate:
I disabled Wi-Fi access and found an EDGE dead spot where the phone could not connect to the EDGE data network but I could place a phone call. When I attempted to launch Mail and sync, I got a message saying that my IMAP server could not be reached. When attempted to launch a website, I received an error message stating that the server could not be reached.
End result, I was unable to use any of the data network features of the phone. So it would appear... that the answer is no. It will not use the basic GPRS undearlining network. However it's quite possible that your results may vary.

  • Edge network dropping

I have had my phone for a few months and it has worked great. I recently completed the 1.1.3 update and now have had the edge network drop twice. I have to power down to get it to be recognized. Has anyone else experiences this issue?

Well firstly I would update to 1.1.4. Secondly, I often find that turning Airplane mode on and then off again re-established EDGE if it's been lost. My guess is that this is a carrier issue rather than the iPhone.

  • No connection to EDGE network for past two days

Has any other iPhone users lost connection to the EDGE network for the past two days? I lost mine on Sunday night and have not had it back since.
Has anyone else has this issue?

Nope, no 'E' in the menu bar. Turned the phone off/on several times to no avail. Now on my AT&T plan I have an additional line added for $9.99 (Family Talk Plan). On Sunday night I added 200 text messages for $5.00 to that other line.
I am not sure if by doing this my iPhone will lose connection to the EDGE network. That's the only thing I can think of that I could have screwed up myself. But why AT&T would make it so that a customer could do this to themselves is odd.
    Thoughts?
