EDGE or WiFi?

If my iPhone is connected with EDGE and WiFi, but I only have 1 bar of AT&T, but 4 bars for Wifi, of perhaps 5 bars of AT&T but only 1 bar of WiFi, will it recognize the stronger connection and use that one? because I have recently noticed that when I am in my house, i get full WiFi from my router but 0 AT&T bars, yet my Internet if SOOOOO slow, sometimes it even says it can't load. Any ideas?

Even when connected via Wi-Fi, EDGE is always available in the background as long as your iPhone as reception. Visual voicemail messages are downloaded to the iPhone via the EDGE network only even when connected to a Wi-Fi network.
If Wi-Fi access is enabled, the iPhone will attempt a connection to an available Wi-Fi network first or connect to an available Wi-Fi network the iPhone has previously connected to which is stored in the iPhone Wi-Fi network settings and remain connected to the Wi-Fi network connected to (unless disconnected from the Wi-Fi network) before connecting via EDGE.

How Do I know When Edge or WIFI is in use?

I have read many of the discussion forums and the manual and many other blogs. Bottom line is the phone will not work as a phone if the phone is using the edge network. Is there a way to know you are using your edge network? Does using the WIFI prevent the phone from being a phone? I have woke up my phone many times to find that Safari is still on the page I last used. Or an application like GasBag. Does this mean it could not recieve a call while asleep but connected to Edge or WIFI? Is it really disconnected? How do you know?

Check the symbol next to the carrier name (just to the right of the AT&T in your case). It shows for Wi-Fi, 3G for the 3G network, E for the EDGE network, and a dot for the GPRS network. If connected to Wi-Fi or 3G, you can access data and voice at the same time. On EGDE or GPRS, you can access data or voice, not both simultaneously (meaning if you're in the middle of a download, a call will go straight to voicemail).

Did you try to reset the phone by holding the sleep and home button until the Apple logo comes back again?
If this does not work, try to set it up as new device, without using the latest backup, in case it contains corrupt data. How to back up your data and set up as a new device

Mac Mail, iPhone, Edge versus WiFi (Corporate Settings)

I have Mac mail set up fine on the iPhone it works O.K. on Edge at the usual AT&T speed, but I am seeing issues when trying to access the web and Mac Mail through my work's WiFi network.
They offer a "public access" (this is a hospital), that when you access WiFi with the web-browser it passes you by a couple of agreement pages (it's a securlogin.arubanetwork.com address). It warns that the speed is throttled down to 0.5 Mb/second, the session expires after 8 hours and access is restricted to HTTP and HTTPS protocols but you can use VPN to tunnel to your home network.
If I acess through WiFi (it asks for an e-mail address) using the web-browser, then web access to Mac Mail and to web-pages are ok, the WiFi triangle is 3-4 bars and the speed is "good". However if I do this work WiFi web-access through the browser and then turn-around and access the Mail app on the iPhone and Mac Mail off that, then the WiFi "triangle" drops right down to the bottom line and "Checking for Mail" goes on-and-on (both at the top of the screen and the footer of the screen) ultimately nothing appears to update. I've checked against Mac Mail via a PC and confirmed that there are changes, but they do not come over under this mode. If I switch WiFi off and then check mail using Edge, the changes come right on through.
I am guessing that the work WiFi is the stumbling block, that even using the Mail app on the iPhone it is trying to reverify that web-access. Anyone got any ideas of any settings that I could use on the iPhone that may allow my to get speedy access from Mail through this WiFi process asking for a verified logon? Thanks.

If they are limiting access to just VPN, HTTP and HTTPS, then Mail.app won't be able to access the .Mac mailbox, but may try and retry a few different approaches to accessing the mailbox to work around that stumbling block. Working with just .5 MB, that could consume a good portion of your individually available bandwidth.
At that point, I suspect your network may start trying to block you, until you can make a new connection, because you are using ports that aren't allowed. (25, 143, 587 and/or 993).

As per the query we understood that you are facing issue with Wifi on your ThinkPad Edge E330.
The warning indicates that Wifi is not enabled, and to enable it you have to press FN+F9 simultaneously. When you press this key, a list of wireless features is displayed. You can quickly change the state of each feature on the list.
Notes: If you want to use this button to enable or disable the wireless features, the following device driversmust be installed on your computer beforehand:
Power Management driver
Onscreen Display Utility
Wireless device drivers
For detailed information on the wireless features, refer to “Wireless connections” on page 29 from the user guide.

Edge and Wifi acting bizarrely

I've had my iPhone since Christmas, and it's always worked great. Today, however, it started acting up on me. While connected to the Edge network, I'm able to check my email and browse on Safari, but the Weather and Stocks widgets won't update—when I go to the Stocks widget, it says "Updated 1/18/08 9:48 PM" (four days ago), and it won't recover charts. The Weather widget says "Update failed" for all four cities I have in it.
Then, I tried connecting to a wifi network which I've used successfully before, and although in my Settings it says that I have a strong connection, the E icon never changes to the Wifi icon in the upper left of my screen. Does anyone know what's going on?

I noticed issues with weather and stocks this morning (while didn't fail the first time, still had Mon at top of the list, and stocks showed zero as the change for everything. Checked just now and now it failed.

As for other issues you are having, try a reboot.
A reset/reboot is:
Go to Home Screen
Press and Hold Home Button
Keep holding and press and hold Lock Button
Keep holding Both
You will see Slide to Turn Off (Don't let go to slide, just keep holding)
The phone will turn off (in time, but screen will look like it has some white lines)
Keep Holding
When you see the Apple Logo, you can let go.
Turning off via the Slide to Turn off while good and fine to turn off, is more like the Sleep Mode on a computer. Thus any locked up issues in memory remain when you turn back on. A reboot as described is like doing a real Turn off and Turn On on a computer.

Using email through Edge and WiFi other than my at my home

When I first got my iPhone I could not send mail, but I could receive mail whether I was on WiFi or Edge. I synced my iPhone with my work laptop and now I can receive and send mail, but ONLY on my WiFi at home. I can not send or receive email anywhere else whether it is another WiFi or Edge. Can anyone tell me what I am doing wrong?

Separate email profiles for EDGE and WiFi, not keeping

I have tried to set up separate profiles as suggested in another thread so that I can send email whether on WiFi or EDGE.
After setting up the profiles and making sure that everything is set up properly,
I go to the home screen, then into mail. I then see that I have two email profiles named the same even though I named them differently.
When I go back to mail settings, both profiles have now been changed so that they now have identical information.
Any ideas about what's going on here?

No. I did the sync the first time and then created the additional account on the iPhone as you suggested.
Just tried it again. After creating the new account, I did a reset via the home and sleep keys.
When I got back in, both accounts had exactly the same info as each other in them. NOT the way I created them.

Find My iPhone Best Combo? Edge, 3G, Wifi

Hi. What's the best combo for using Find My iPhone. A good balance between battery life and locating your iPhone when it gets lost. Is it Edge only, 3G only, Edge + Wifi or 3G + Wifi. Is it recommended to use wifi only to Find My iPhone, are there more wifi spots that cellular spots in the world? Is Edge more used in all countries more than 3G (making it better for locating).

When connected to my wifi router the google maps app gets my current location correctly but if I disable wifi and just use edge then it says my current location is at another address about 1.4miles away which I've never been to

Sounds about right.
The way GPS-less location service works (in 1st gen iPhone or any other device without GPS) is to check which cellar towers are in range, and optionally strength of signal from each of them. Then compare with database of locations of towers (and optionally signal strengths at various distances from those towers). This can result in very low precision in some cases (off by a mile or two, even more), for example if you have only a tower or two in range.
To get higher precision, the phone can also use information about what WiFi networks are in range, and try to deduce more precise information from that. Unlike cell towers that have relatively long range, radios for WiFi networks have very short range, so if one or more WiFi networks your device sees are in the database, it results in relatively precise location (still much less precise than GPS, but unlike GPS, this works well even in close spaces that get no GPS signal at all).
And if you wondered, yes there are companies whose business is to drive around and map locations of WiFi networks.

Reverting to Edge from Wifi

I've had my iPhone for 3 days. I cannot get it to stay on WiFi.
It shows a check by my home WiFi (I've logged in with the WEP) but the "E" shows in the corner.
I've reset the network connections and "forgotten" the network and re-connected. It still will not stay on WiFi. At a public place yesterday with free WiFi, I had the same problem.

I am suddenly having the SAME issues. I have a home wireless network, and for some reason my phone will say that it is connected, and continue to say that, but the blue E remains on the top of the screen, and I cannot stay on WiFi....Please, someone help us fix the issue.
Mind you, this iPhone is a normal, non-hacked phone running the 1.1.1 update. The day I bought it was the day that update came out, and is what iTunes installed on the phone.

SOLUTION:
The solution for my issue was to run a RESTORE on the iphone. I first confirmed that my iphone BACKUP was current. I did the aforementioned per the Apple representative. It took about 20 minutes.

WiFi vs. Edge

Hello people,
I just got my iPhone and i have a few questions about the Networking. I am not super familiar with Networking but i would like to know more. My main question is what is the difference between Edge and WiFi? Is there any hidden charges from AT&T while using either Edge or WiFi? Sometimes i will be in a room that has WiFi and it appears in my WiFi settings but even when i click on it and the signal apears at the top of the screen i still cannot get on the interent. It could be a problem with the network in that area but i would like to know if there is anything i can do in this situation. Is there anyway to toggle off Edge even if i am not getting a Wifi connection? Thanks

The $20/mo data plan with the iPhone is unlimited but applies to EDGE access only.
AT&T's EDGE network is accessed via cell towers - the same used for placing and receiving calls and text messages. This can be described as a fast dial-up access speed which is much slower that when accessing a WiFi or wireless network. There are no additional charges by AT&T for accessing a WiFi network but some public WiFi networks require payment for access and others are free. Many coffee shops, restaurants and shopping centers offer free WiFi access for their customers - some require a login via a website that comes up automatically with Safari after connecting to the provider's WiFi network and others it is a matter of selecting the available network.

Wifi/Edge Automated Backup

I want to know if there is a way to create a scheduled backup up (to an internet location or gmail) some of my iphone data (contacts, calender, general iphone settings, fast dial setting, contacs pics, notes, bookmarks) that runs every night let's say at 03:00 am using edge if wifi fails. Is there an app. that can do that? I had something similar back in windows mobile.

I would request you to check under backup options, scheduled backup is on.
And also please make sure that the Backup and Restore feature requires an Azure storage account and container that must belong to the same subscription as the web app that you are going to back up.

Problem sending mail via 3g/edge , no problem with wifi

I'm having problem with my iphone sending email via the 3g/edge network. When I am in wifi mode i don't have any problem.
I can receive email via 3g/edge and wifi . The problem is only sending email.
I have setup SMTP with login and password, with SSL, with pass auth and port 587
I try with port 465 and i have the same problem with 3g/edge , but no problem with wifi.
Any help please?

ok. i found the solution.
The problem is not in the iphone, the problem was DNS resolution in the server side.
