EDID Limitation for iMac 27 inch (Really Advanced Question)

I need a display engineer/programmer to answer my question: is it possible for Apple to set the EDID of 27in iMacs to accept 1080p rather than just 1440p/720p, is it even possible? And if it is possible, would it be a software-based (ex: flashing firmware) upgrade or a hardware-based upgrade? Please, no n00b answers. Appreciate the help.

I am not the engineer that you requested, but I think that you are missing the boat with the question. The 27" iMac already accepts 1080p. Any new Mac with a mini-DisplayPort can connect with the 27" iMac with a simple and inexpensive m-DP to m-DP cable and drive the iMac's display at its full resolution, 2560x1440 pixels.
So if this is a bassackwards way of inquiring about why an XBox or some other device is limited to 720p, it is because the adapter (~US$150) used limits the resolution to 720p. If you use a scaler (~US$299), which has its own graphics chip, instead of an adapter, then it can drive the iMac's display at 1080p.

  • Is there a volume limiter for imac

I am looking for a way to limit volume on imac so the children do not hurt their hearing.

No way to do that, are they using headphones? you can set up parenting controls to take away access to the system preferences, then make sure you turn off the sound icon in the menu bar, then you will need to change the volume keys on the keyboard.

  • My imac is running mountain lion and last night i downloaded maverick. in midst of installing it it said a powerPC app microsoft word would not work so i canceled the install for the time being. my questions is  if i choose to finish installing maverick

my imac is running mountain lion and last night i downloaded maverick. in midst of installing it, it said a powerPC app microsoft word would not work so i canceled the install for the time being. my questions is  if i choose to finish installing maverick does that mean i will nevver be able to access word documents stored on my desktop? or do the word docs automatically convert to pages or what? i am so confused. would i be better off just sticking with mountain lion and send the maverick install to the trash? hoping someone will be able to answer my question though i am afraid the response is likely to be just stick with mountain lion so you can keep using word. i had been looking forward to maverick but it seems pretty drastic to not have access to microsoft word anymore by switching to maverick. hope someone has an answer so i can have the best of both worlds so to speak!

thanks for your response Csound1 on the peninsula ... if i go ahead and install maverick and then download LibreOffice or OpenOffice will i then be able to access old microsoft word saved documents on my deskstop through those two free alternatives? i am not that knowledgeable about these things so i am not sure if you are saying i will just be able to use libreoffice or openoffice for creating new documents or whether i can access the saved microsoft docs? are they transferred to OO or LO or what and if editing of the old word docs is needed can i do that through the OO and LO programs or apps (see i am not even sure if i am using the correct vocabulary!) hope you can answer this as quick as the first question, so i can decide to stick with mountain lion and trash the maverick install or proceed with maverick install and hoppe that my microsoft word docs are still accessible through OO or LO or adding to myquestion will pages on maverick be able to open the old word documents? thanks again!

  • Software for iMac question . . .

Do you know of a software program for iMac that is comparable to InfoSelect or InfoMagic in the PC world? They provide a place to organize snippets (to pages) of information in an easy manner.
    Any suggestions would be welcome.
iMac Core Duo 20"   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Thanks David. I had done many Google searches and didn't come up with a single possibility.
After posting, I used "Stumble Upon" in Firefox and "Mac OS" and turned up SOHO. I'm testing it now.
I will also test your 2 suggestions--I'm sure one of the 3 will be close to what I am looking to have.
    Thanks again.

  • PC key caps for iMac keyboard

I am planning to switch from PC to iMac as soon as the 2012 iMac becomes available (whenever that may be). Since I use my current desktop for work and gaming, I plan to run Boot Camp with Windows 7 all the time. I prefer the look and feel of the iMac keyboard, but would still prefer a PC keyboard layout, so I my question is this: where can I buy PC keycaps on the iMac keyboard. The keys in questions would be:
    iMac key     PC key
    cmd left       alt
    cmd right     alt gr
    alt left          windows
    alt right        menu
    f13               insert
    f14               print screen
    f15               pause/break
I have found several websites that sell replacement keycaps for iMac keyboards, but I have not found any that sell PC keycaps for iMac keyboards. Any tips?

Thanks, The hatter, but I would prefer to keep the iMac keyboard since I really like its look and feel. No idea where I can buy PC keycaps for it?
I just strikes me, wouldn't this be something Apple could sell to custmers that buy iMacs to use primarily with Windows? I mean, since switching to Intel processors and offering Bootcamp, Windows would as natural a choice for iMac users as OS X?

  • Limits for Numeric Test

    Hi All,
I am trying to load limits for a numeric test from an excel file.
I have couple of questions on this.
    1. For exporting these values using “Import/Export
    Properties”, when I press limits, I get “CompExpr”, “Limits.HighExpr” & “Limits.LowExpr”
in Selected box automatically. But in Limit tab, if mention “Limits.HighExpr”
& “Limits.LowExpr” I get error. But I can load the values with “Step.Limits.Low”
    & “Step.Limits.High”. Is it correct?
    2. In Limit Tab, I have tried all the option
for loading “CompExpr”. In my Excel file, against “CompExpr”, I mentioned “GELE”,
    “GELE (>=<=)”, “GELE (>= <=)”…… But I get error
always. Can you please help me

  • Locating drivers for Imac 24" (Early 2008) to work with Vista 32 bit

Hi all. I'm really having trouble with my Mac and was wondering if anyone has an alternative.
I have an Apple iMac "Core 2 Duo" 2.8 24-Inch (Early 2008) running OSX 10.5.8. I recently partition my hard disk using Bootcamp and installed Windows Vista 32 bit.
This is where the problem starts. I misplaced the driver DVD's that came with the mac and i am in dire need of the drivers especially for the video card (ATI Radeon HD 2600 pro). I was able to download the drivers for the video card but, anytime i try to install or play a game for example, Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare it always give me a error that no drivers were found and the game crashes.
Has anyone else encountered this problem?
Does the Apple website provide drivers for Imac 24" drivers for Windows Vista 32 bit?

    Patrick,
    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
You will either need to find your install discs that came with the computer or contact Apple and they will replace them for a nominal charge.
Going forward keep these and other original installation media in a safe place.
    Regards,
    Roger

  • IMac 24inch thoughts and questions

    Hey all
I have had my new 24 inch iMac for about 2 weeks now and I LOVE it. Just a few questions I'd like to ask.
    1) I have a 17 inch apple display, the 4x3 variety that was axed before the widescreen displays emerged. It's the plastic-look one.
What adaptor do I need to get this baby working dual screen on my new iMac? I used to have it attached to a Powerbook G4 and that was sweet.
    2) My iMac is INCREDIBLY noisy when running windows XP. It has its fair share of 'working' sounds in OSX but in windows its ridiculous at times. What could be casuing this?
    3) My apple wireless keyboard keeps disconnecting from the computer, and theyre fresh batteries. What could be the porblem?
Sorry for my complaints but I'm loving this machine and think it's superb.
Anyone wanting an iMac, dont compromise on screen size... get the 24!
Oh yeh, I have the 7600 graphics card, whats a good game to play on this baby?
    Thanks y'all

"3) My apple wireless keyboard keeps disconnecting from the computer, and theyre fresh batteries. What could be the porblem?"
    Rycey,
Have you checked all the settings on the Bluetooth panel of System Preferences?
In addition, have you tried a PRAM reset?
    To reset the PRAM:
    1. Shut down the computer.
    2. Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command (Apple logo), Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    3. Start up the computer.
    4. Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination after the startup chord sounds, but before the gray screen appears.
    5. Hold all four keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup chord for the second time.
    6. Release the keys.
As for noise, I don't have windows installed, and don't yet have the Core 2 Duo, but on a new Core Duo I just setup this morning, I have had some success reducing noise, both fan and hard drive noises, by performing both the PRAM reset above, as well as the SMC reset: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303446.
Quieter didn't happen immediately, but over a couple hours it has become more quiet, which has been my previous experience with making these resets to somewhat noisier than expected iMacs. [For iMacs with a serious noise issue, I wouldn't pretend to claim any change will be particularly worthwhile, but without trying, how would one know.]

  • This maybe a really dumb question...

I know this maybe a really dumb question but I do need to ask:
-Do I need to buy a new vista to install on my new mac?
(I have a start up one that was included with my previous pc laptop..)
-In terms of partitioning, how should I distribute space?
    Thank you in advance.

    jlee636:
The Boot Camp installation guide is [HERE|http://www.apple.com/support/bootcamp>. It should be able to answer questions related to installation. Of course these discussions have several other information on boot camp/ windows. All you need to do is launch a search on them.
-In terms of partitioning, how should I distribute space?
Too many people make a partition very small and then regret having done so. My recommendation is to have a partition of at least 32GB. It is highly dependent on what your will be installing on Windows XP/Vista.
-Do I need to buy a new vista to install on my new mac?(I have a start up one that was included with my previous pc laptop..)
It is more than likely that the Windows disk that came with your previous PC/Laptop is an OEM disk and will only work properly with that particular PC. This is generally the case with Dell, HP, Sony etc. The installation disk in the cases above are usually branded.
For more information on which Windows version(s) work with Boot Camp then please click [HERE|http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.5/en/11889.html].

  • APC UPS for iMac

I posted this in another thread, but since I have a new Q I am posting it again so it is tracked properly...I have 3 brand new iMac (24 inches, 3 GHz) and 1 MBA in my small business. Living in Seattle's suburbs, we have several 2-3 seconds power outages several times every winter. The issue is not if the UPS is 25% or 100% of the price of my iMac as the time we spent working on something is worth much more as we charge $200/hr to our customers with our consulting service. Last night I lost one file that got corrupted. It will take me 3-4 hrs to do it again... so I am buying my UPS right now! Before I make the final choice, can somebody confirm me if the power management feature will work with the BE750G? Pricing is not much of an issue. anything in the $90-$250 will do it for us as we lost more than that last night. I found the BE750G for $86 at Amazon and the SUA750 for $270. I really need the power management functionality as we leave the Macs powered on all the time and we are not always there to start a manual shut down.

I hate to say this but APC phone support is extremely poor (or t least the reps I got to talk to). First the sales rep told me the 750G was a discontinued model... when I told him I was looking at that on THEIR web site he acted surprised... so he moved me up the chain to second tier TECH support. Second tier support said that for iMacs the recommend smart UPS because those are better, but could not articulate why it was better (other than saying that they were more expensive because those units are better , He had no idea about switchover times, and I swear I am not making this up, he asked what version of Windows I was running, (I guess a valid question on Intel based Macs) etc. So after that experience I am very leery of trusting their advice and rather learn from a fellow iMac user that is indeed using either a 750G series or the most expensive Smart UPS 750 and confirm me if indeed switchover is fast enough and the USB connection will work well and start a shut down process if needed...
    Thanks for the help

  • Colorsplash app for imac

On my iphone I have an app called color-splash. I would like to know if there is an app for the imac that works the same way. It allows you to keep an object of a photo in color while you edit out the rest of the photo to be black and white. I believe there is another app for the iphone that is called color canvas as well that edits photos this way. If anyone knows of an app like this for imac's iphoto please help.

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. The one application that I know of that can do that is Adobe Photoshop Elements for Mac. It not only can do theselective color but can do some really advanced edits: Example 1 - remove unwanted background, Example 2- Text/watermarking
Amazon.com often has specials on PSE bringing down the price to around $79. PSE has about 75% of Photoshop's features at about 20% of the price.

A Windows guest OS running within Parallels would be subject to the same security breaches as the same OS running on a PC and you would need to take the same precautions when the OS was running on the Mac.
Currently Macs are not subjected to such security breaches, but that could change in the future as more trouble makers concentrate on Mac OS X as it increases in popularity. Many of us use ClamXav on the Mac.
