Edirol FA 66 Fire Wire Inerface

Just got the Mac Book and working with Logic Express 8 (going to buy the full version shortly).
Anyone hear of any issues using the FA 66 as an interface? I looked it over and it is a **** of a lot of product for the money, and just want to know if there are any issues out there before I buy it. Also curious if there are any Logic Pro issues with it as well, for when I upgrade.

I have the FA-66 and it is working fine for me.
Have you changed the audio output in System Preferences? The FA-66 wasn't working for me until I changed it to not use the internal audio.

Core Audio Overload - Will a New Fire Wire Unit Help?

I use a G5 2.5Ghz Quad with 6GB of RAM and an Edirol FA-101. I'm finding that the 'Core Audio Overload' is becoming a huge irritant and I've tried multiple driver configurations in Logic Pro 7.2 to correct the problem.
Watching the performance, I had 64% of my processor power idle and 1.79GB of RAM free when it last occurred. Given that so much system resource is idle, my only conclusion is that my Edirol FA-101 is not adequate for the tasks I'm setting it. Before I spend the money, does anyone agree or am I barking up the wrong tree? Can Core Audio overload due to the sound unit being used?
I'm thinking of a Fire Wire 800 unit like the RME Fireface - if anyone has experience of FW800 units I'll be glad to hear from you and from anyone who knows whether it will help Core Audio process information in time.

I'm not using a seperate drive for my Logic files. I've worked through the link you posted on settings several times, and it's Steinberg's 'Halion Symphonic Orchestra' that's crippling my system. I watch the system performance as the song plays and the second core peaks out every time while the Disk I/O meter barely registers a blip which is why I haven't put anything onto a seperate drive, though I certainly shall be.
Will getting Logic projects on a seperate drive work to a greater extent for Core Audio? Halion Symphonic Orchestra uses huge files, but I can't understand why I have such a large amount of Idle system with the Core Audio Overload?
Would an RME Fireface not help Core Audio in its processing? If I can avoid the cost, I will. I'm even using a Pro Care appointment on Tuesday afternoon to see if there's anything else I can do, I'm that desperate!
If I move the Halion Symphonic Orchestra to a seperate drive and then the Logic files to another, would that be more benificial to system performance?

The FireWire cable is just for the FireWire ports on the display. The display will run without it.

How do you hook up a fire wire video camera to the 13 inch aluminum macbook

I have a 13 inch mac book with only USB, but a video camera that only has a fire wire output jack.
How can I hook up the camera with fire wire out to the USB in on the new 13 inch MB?
Is there an accessory I can buy that will do this? Link to the product?

There is no option/accessory to do this. You'll need to get a different camera, or use a computer with firewire.

IMac can't running any two fire wire hard disks at the same time . which

iMac can’t running any two fire wire hard disks at the same time . which two hard disks have extra power from power socket . If i just insert one of them .No problem . If connect two Hds at the same time. Leopard cant find it and the Hds seem no problem. the machine must be restarted and then use one . No problem . I have formated the HD many times .even if which format is Fat 32 or Mac issue persists .Boot from installation CD used the disk utility . Issue stills . If i used one fire wire HD that get power from power socket and used one fire wire device . Leopard was no problem during this time . Whether is this design problem or my machine hardware problem?My Mac has been changed the logic board by Apple service . Do you have similar case in here????

Install OS 10.2.1 on Fire Wire Drive

If I purchase a Fire Wire Drive and cable, connect to my Pismo, can I install OSX 10.2.4 from a Software Install and Restore disk and use this drive for OSX activity? How should it be set up? Where can I find instructions for such a task?

Homer, welcome, yes you can, however, I would highly recommend using Carbon Copy Cloner to make a bootable backup of your OS on a separate partition on that external.

Unable to mount external fire-wire hard drive - help, please!

After working the last couple of days to resolve the failure of an internal drive, now one of my external drives (LaCie fire-wire) will not mount. I was using it to back up the bad internal drive, and probably forgot to eject the drive before turning it off; don't know if this really makes any difference, but just in case...
If I use Disk Utility I can see the LaCie drive, but it will not mount.
When I tried to verify the drive got the following message -
Invalid sibling link
The volume LaCie HD needs to be repaired
1 HFS volume checked - volume needs repair
Next I tried to repair the drive, and was told -
Invalid sibling link
Volume check failed
Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit
1 HFS volume checked
1 volume could not be repaired because of an error
This is where I stopped. I read another post somewhere in the forums about making a disk image of the drive, but I'm afraid of making things worse by proceeding without knowing what I'm doing. Any ideas on how I can somehow retrieve the data in the LaCie drive?

Hi! Diskwarrior is always better at repairing drive directories which constitute 99% of all drive problems. I run it fairly regularly usually once a month. BUT I always run it at the first sign of weirdness or problems AND every time I have had a power failure or a forced restart or shutdown because those events usually always damage the drive's directory. Often even though the directory is damaged OSX can go ahead and mount it and it will work ok but eventually the damage builds every time one of those events occur and finally there is a failure to mount or boot. HP Pavilion Elite m9040n Desktop and Fire Wire 1394

I have the above mentioned Desktop. It has a 1394 plugin on the front of case. Does the Pavilion come with all the software to make fire wire work? I backed up my hard drive onto an Toshiba external disk with a USB cable the other day and it took 6 hours. Isn't fire wire suppost to transfer data faster than a USB cable? Is there any special things I need to know when buying fire wire 1394.
I was looking on the internet the other day and they showed fire wire with 4 and 6 pins. Looking into the hole on my computer it only looks like 3 pins?

Rick, welcome to the forum.
There is no software necessary for Firewire (IEEE 1394a). The driver is installed with the OS.
Here is the Motherboard Specifictions page for the computer. It only shows that there is a Firewire (IEEE 1394a) port (# 11) in the Back I/O ports.
Here is an article that shows the comparison of speed of Firewire vs USB. Firewire was developed by Apple.

Connecting Fire Wire to a G4 400 PCI to Use Migratiion Assistant

I get a window saying the the fire Wire will not connect to the G4. I want to transfer the Data from the G4 to the iMac, but it won't connect through Fire Wire.

Fire wire or usb Connection for external disk dvd disk drive

is it worth the extra money buying a external dvd re-wrighter with fire wire connection rather than the traditional usb connection? would it work like a normal disk drive as my internal dvd/cd drive is broken.

Ive got a budget of around £100 to spend and have been looking at a lacie dvd+16x light scribe 4.7gb/8.5gb with fire wire. Any idea if there any good?

If anybody has been following my posts, I have been wanting and needing a fire wire enclosure for large hard drives. I only have one of each. A Fire Wire enclosure and a 3.5 PATA drive. A Maxtor 160gb. I have other hard drives and they are smaller, and have issues. Fortunately OS 9 is able to mount these damaged drives.
I am very happy to have a fire wire enclousre and also a new hard drive for my files. =] =] And I still have like a bunch of files to organize but the most important thing right now is to get all of these files off of three messed up hard drives.
I have one hard drive connected to a USB enclosure and the new 160gb one is connected to the Fire Wire enclosure. (It also has a USB 2.0 port but I am connecting it to Fire Wire) and I am running OS 9 while operating all the external hard drives.
As for the fire wire enclosure: I get an error message:
A FireWire disk has stopped responding. The problem must be corrected to prevent damaging the disk's contents.
Please check all FireWIre connections. If you added, removed, or turned on a FireWire device on or off, try undoing what you did.
And so I turn off the drive and turn it back on. It acts like nothing has happened to it. But certainly something bad is happening!!! =S
Also it has done this in the middle of transferring files and then I turn it off and on and then it resumes moving THE SAME file!!!!!!! =S

Could the problem have been the USB-only enclosures??????? I have tried to get it to work a few minutes ago and it would not turn on. I gave up on it and I disconnected it. I am moving files from the damaged hard drives onto that imac's internal hard drive, and then onto the new hard drive ... all using the same fire wire enclosure. I have one so far and not two... and that is kinda frustrating. =S }=S }=S
Even though I have to keep switching hard drives with one fire wire enclosure, the fire wire enclosure transfer speed is now FAST!!!!!!!!

Have you tried any of these soundcards designed for 2.0?
The 3.0 port is categorically designed to be comoatible with all 2.0 devices. The port itself will adapt to the usage parameters of the device.
But if you really want to downgrade, then simply plug any 2.0 hub into a MBA 3.0 port. The ports on the hub will be 2.0.

Hi, whiteyblast, and welcome to the Discussions!
Try resetting FireWire by disconnecting your FW cables/peripherals from the Mac, then disconnecting the Mac's power cord for about ten minutes. Then reconnect, power up and try it again.
Also, try a PRAM reset.
If it's truly dead/defective, you'll need to add a PCI card, since native FW is hard-wired to the logic board.

Hi, just a short question. Can I use my fire-wire power supply and the appropriate cable from my 4th gen. classic ipod (monochrome display) to charge the battery of my ipod nano 3rd gen.? Or do I have to use a new USB power supply?

Yes. I do it all the time. I have an old firewire cable and AC brick (I bought the first version of the iPod Photo which came with ALL the pack ins) which I use to charge my 3rd gen Nano, Touch and 5th gen iPod.
