  • Ability to edit a DVD created on other equipment.

I have an old video my mother had made from 8mm film. I bought a RCA DVD Recorder/Player and copied the video to DVD. When I loaded the DVD into the Mac, it plays, but I can't figure out how to edit the video stream (lots of bouncing around and heads cut off). Is there a product out there that will allow you to edit a DVD that wasn't created in either iMovie or iDVD? I'm still planning on duping the videos, but sure would like to edit them down.
    Thanks in advance

I downloaded the trial s/w and tried to convert the files, but I keep getting a message that the file format is unsupported. I tried to send a question to DVDxDV's webite, but it kept timing out and when you go to their forums, they want everything but your SSN. They don't need to know my birthday to provide support.
The files I find on the DVD are VIDEO_RM, which contains VIDEO_RM.BUP/DAT & IFO fiels, as well as a ZRN_DISC.DAT file
    and
    VIDEO_TS, which contains: VIDEO_TS.BUP/.IFO/.VOB AND VTS010.BUP/.IFO &.VOB files.
I don't need the audio files, just the video and I don't know enough about the tech specs for video to figure out what's happening.
    Any help would be appreciated.

  • How to edit a DVD

I moved some old VHS tapes onto a DVD and it plays OK in the DVD Player. The only files on the DVD disc is a folder called VIDEO_TS with many files inside that seem to match chapters in the separate VHS tapes.
I do not seem to be able to move anything into iMovie or IDVD by any drag or import method. What am I missing?

I just had a huge struggle with this, too. I'm far from an expert, but I will share what I've learned.
Apparently, you can't get the files off the DVD to edit in iMovie. You need additional software. Two options are Popcorn and Toast. Neither are cheap, though. Popcorn is about $50 and Toast is about $100. Be sure to look on Amazon at the reviews. Popcorn didn't get very good reviews. Though, reading them, I figured the problems people had may not have any connection with what I wanted to do. Anyway, I didn't want to pay $50 to be able to edit my DVDs.
I was told to look for a program called Handbrake. I downloaded this and went to get my DVDs. Ran into some problems (don't even remember exactly what at the moment) so I went to the Handbrake FAQs. It said that it didn't recommend using Handbrake to get DVDs to iMovie. So I took Handbrake off.
That's when I discovered MPEG Streamclip. This finally worked for me. However, you do need a Quicktime extension that costs $20, so it's not totally free.
Here's one thing I discovered though: You load your DVD into MPEG Streamclip. Then you need to export them to DV, which is a format you can use in iMovie. You need to select in option to separate it into segments, which is better for iMovie.
After you have done this, go to the files. If it split it into, say, three clips, the files might look like this:
    family.dv
    family.dv 001
    family.dv 002
You need to go in and rename them so that they have the extension of "dv" otherwise iMovie won't know what to do with them. So they should look like:
    family1.dv
    family2.dv
    family3.dv

  • Editing a DVD converted to AppleTv in iMovie

If they include chapter and/or subtitle tracks, remove them so iMovie '08 will import and edit them as a single project.

You should be able to get some more precise information from your Xorg logs, but I would bet it is related to the evdev driver. Some of the options in your xorg.conf no longer work with the latest version. For now you should be able to either map your mouse directly to the appropriate /dev/event* entry or change to the standard mouse driver, both of those methods should be in the wiki.
You are supposed to be able to use the evdev driver without the input section of your xorg.conf by using dbus/hal autodetection, but AFAIK at the moment the xorg-server package still isn't compiled with hal support, so you would have to patch and rebuild the package.

  • How do I edit a DVD video in Final Cup Pro

    Hey all,
I'm working on a project and I need to take the video on a DVD, bring it in to Final Cut Pro, add titles to it (text) and then output it to be burned back to a DVD.
I can't loose any quality either, so it has to look the same as it does on the original DVD, just now with text.
I've already looked around at other programs but none seem to work.
HanDbreak: This program takes FOREVER to encode the DVD. It said it was going to take 5 hours to rip a 90 min movie. Unacceptable.
ffXMpegX: This program simply doesn't work. When I attempt to press the "encode" button after picking my settings, it tells me to find a specific file before it can continue (?!)
MPEG Streamclip: This is being touted as the best by people on forums, but I find it to be the worst. The GUI is downright confusing as there isn't one! There aren't any options, buttons, settings, drop down menu's, fields or ANYTHING. In fact, this thing looks just like a bad video player. I dragged on dropped a .VOB file in there, it took it and the video appeared but there aren't ANY OPTIONS after that. Am I missing something?
MactheRipper: Okay, so this is alright for ripping the VIDEO_TS folder and that's about it. More or less pointless for what I want to do I guess.
So can anyone please help me? I really need to get this done.
    Thanks

Not possible. FCP cannot edit DVD video, it needs to be converted. Conversion means quality loss. Then you edit, and convert AGAIN to DVD...more quality loss.
Want zero quality loss? You need to get a hold of the original material that was used to make the DVD.
MPEG STREAMCLIP...drop the clip in the box...the look in the FILE menu under EXPORT...There are your options. But this won't be zero quality loss. Again, that is not possible.

  • How to open and edit a DVD?

I have two DVDs of a family event sent by two different people. DVDs made on domestic video recorders. I want to take out some stretches and edit the remaining pieces together. Could someone please take me by the hand and gently lead me through the process? Will I need (or is the job better done with) specific software, or can it be done using iDVD or iMovie? Grateful for any help. Terry

this is a 2 step process:
    convert DVDs into some editable
    edit
a tutorial, incl. links to needed software and plugins, can be found on my website

note: due to high compression on DVDs, don't expect wonders in pic quality

  • How do I edit a DVD on FCP 4.0?

Why don't you just use MPEG Streamclip and convert a sequence of VOB files into DV?

  • How can I edit a DVD Template for Premiere Elements 10?

In previous versions of Premiere Elements, I would edit DVD Templates using Photoshop or Photoshop Elements to include my logo and change the color or tint of the background. Now, I can only see the Fun template in the DVD Templates folder. I want to modify the Extreme Sports template, but can't find it now. Where are all the other templates located?

Install the excellent 'Search Everything' utility and enter 'extreme' as a search term. Note that when you first run 'Everything' it takes time to index your drive(s). After that though it is a nearly instantaneous start.

How do I edit my wedding DVD that is currently in the DVD Player application, i.e., I want to take of one song and video section to place it on a disc.

You would have to rip the entire video from the wedding video DVD and edit it in iMovie or Quicktime Player 7 with Quicktime Pro.
Handbrake will rip the non protected video DVD.

  • Edit a DVD transfered from a HDD recorder

A friend of mine was on TV last week and I recorded the program on my Sony Hard Disk Recorder, she was on a 2 1/2 hour program for about 10 minutes. I transfered the recording from the Hard Disk to a DVD on the same device, I would now like to import that onto my Mac in order to edit and just take the 10 minutes she appeared to put on another DVD for her. When I insert the DVD with the content on, my iMac says I have inserted a blank disc when I know it has the content on, as I have watched the same DVD on my DVD player. Is it possible to do what I am asking?

It's definitely possible, but you're roughly in the same position as a user whose camcorder has a HD or a DVD... I'm guessing that your DVD isn't "finished" in the sense that your recorder could continue to add content to that disk. A couple options:
-try to transfer directly from the HD version of the file (iLink/Firewire? copy as a data file?). If it's possible, this will likely yield the highest quality. Do you know what format the HDD recorder is using for the files?
    - figure out what it takes to finish a DVD with your Sony recorder so that the DVD can play on any player. This gives you .VOB files that you can convert to mpeg-2 content that you can uncompress into DV Stream format (.dv) and edit.
    - play the video on the HDD recorder and send the output signal (I assume it's analog) through a digital converter to your Mac. It will come in as an editable .dv file.

  • Editing recorded DVDs

    Dear Forum,
Next to some related questions already posted, I have another one regarding DVDs and iMovie.
I have a DVD recorder connected to my TV set. Is it possible to load these recorded DVDs into iMovie, remove all the unwanted content (unwanted previous and following parts of TV programs and of course commercials) and then putting the cleaned part back to the DVD-RW?
What additional SW do I need, I read something about MPEG2. Is the supplied with QuickTime Pro?
    Kind Regards
    Rob

    Leslie:
Yesterday I posted a similar message under "ipod" - I guess I did not see the "color display" category. I gave my daughter my mini so I could obtain voice memo capability with the 20 color. Now I need to edit too. Have you solved the issue as yet? I guess none of the ilife programs can do this?
    Help is appreciated! Thanks All.

  • Editing a DVD movie

    Newbie-sorry.
I recorded a movie from satellite, burned a DVD. I now want to edit out the commercials and junk after the movie. I bought my Imac 24 3 weeks ago. I have Imovie HD etc. Will someone please tell me how to edit this movie. I have copied the movie to my desktop. Standard Video_TS and Video_RM. I don't know which to use, probably Video_TS. Any help would be appriciated.
    Thanks in advance.

welcome checkmate to the  boards of discussions...
DVDs are in a socalled delivery format (mpeg2), which isn't meant and made for any processing as editing...
for using the iLife apps, you have to convert'em first, in recommended order, choose one of the following tools/workarounds:
    * DVDxDV (free trial, 25$, Pro: 90$)
    * Apple mpeg2 plugin (29$) + Streamclip (free)
    * Cinematize >60$
    * Mpeg2Works >25$ + Apple plug-in
    * Toast 6/7 allows converting to dv/insert dvd, hit apple-k
    * connect a miniDV Camcorder with analogue input to a DVD-player and transfer disk to tape/use as converter
non of these apps override copyprotection mechanisms as on commercial dvds...

  • Solaris Express Developer Edition, free DVD kit

Today I ordered the "Free Solaris Express Developer Edition DVD":
"For a limited time, Sun is offering a Solaris Express Developer Edition DVD for x86 platforms mailed to you at no charge." (http://developers.sun.com/sxde/download.jsp)
Will I get the new 9/07 version or an older one? When I ordered Solaris 10 some time ago, Sun sent me version 11/06.
    Thanks!

Well, it looks like this version of Solaris simply forgot to bundle the FLAC gstreamer plugin. Does anyone know where to find a version compiled for solaris?

  • How do i edit a DVD .VOB video

I recently had a VHS tape converted to a DVD by Costco.  It is in a .VOB file format.  What is the best way to edit in Premiere Elements vers 12?

    RichardAllenGaller
What exactly do you have on the DVD disc from Costco?
If you have it as a DVD-VIDEO on DVD which you can insert into the TV DVD Player, the for Premiere Elements 12
    a. But your DVD disc in the burner tray
    b. Open Premiere Elements and set the project preset manually for whichever applies to you
    NTSC DV Standard if 4:3
    NTSC DV Widescreen 16:9
    or
the PAL equivalent for PAL regions.
    c. Go to Add Media/"DVD Camera or Computer Drive"/Video Importer to rip the VOBs (video files) from the DVD-VIDEO.  The Video Importer then allows you to Save your VOBs to hard drive and/or Add to Timeline of the project hat you just set up with the settings of the project preset.
Details can be fine tuned when you need them. Example, best way to handle
Video Importer Save In field so that you do not get "video already imported" when you have not imported it yet.
Any audio out of sync issues
