Edit an embeded vector?

I have an indesign document with an imbeded vector in it. Is there anyway to edit the image from within indesign? Mainly I just want to change the fill color, however when I attempt to do that, it just changes the background color of the image box and I can't directly modify the actual vector.

It's clear the OP is not a power user or perhaps even familiar with the tools they are using. Do you really think that introducing not recommened ways to a new user is a good idea?
Sure I can do it beause I know the pitfalls and the problems that arise. But someone not in graphics or a power user of the software or limited knowledge of print or web technologies will struggle to find WHY their copy and pasted images from illustrator aren't working, after being recommened to do it by, whom I consider a very valued and great contributor, you John.
I think it's insane to even say it without offering up the limitations.
You had a right go at me for not offering and explanation of why not to do it. But you yourself offered no explanation as to WHY and WHY not to do it either.
I'm not having a go at you personally. You are right you can copy and paste from Illustrator. But as you say yourself, it's not recommened.

Before putting complex art in perspective grid, ALWAYS create a symbol first.
You can only rotate perspective layers (and the art) around the vanishing points. You cannot change perspective or move the vanishing points (at least not if you want to artwork to adapt to it).

Reuse embedded vector graphics

I wan to reuse embedded vector graphics from FM documents in MS Office and OpenOffice.
I found the Linux tool mif2xfig which works only for MIF 4.0.

What vector graphics formats do those apps support?
There have been at least 2 FrameScript or plug-in tools for exporting FM graphics discussed here over the years, but the only one for which I found a link, the link was stale.
For small numbers of such embeds, I normally open the PDF page in Illustrator, and delete all the page content except the image elements of interest. Save as EPS, PDF or SVG, depending on target app support for vector imports.
Acrobat Pro has the ability to export all images in a PDF, but as of 9.0, only to raster format. We have XI, but I haven't checked to see if that feature's been enhanced.

Is there any way to enable editing when embedded in a browser?

When I embed Acrobat Pro in the browser it seems to run in a limited mode that prevents most document editing. It works fine when I access the document directly.
Is there any way I can enable full editing in Acrobat pro when it is browser-embedded?

When embedded it loses its menus, it loses the Tools link in the top right, and most items in the Comment functions.
It doubtless looses a lot more too.
My preference would be to have a simple (browser-side) call I could make to re-enable all these functions.
Note, I cannot add javascript to the pdfs. I can only act in the browser.
I'm starting to suspect I'll have to write a plugin, but I'd really rather avoid doing that if I can. It's been years since I've had to seriously develop in C++, and one glance at it reminds me the headache it can be.
For reference, browser embedded is key to my architecture, as the document will be being presented with a lot of ancillary information around it, and will need to save to a web-site, not to locally.
(If anyone has any experience with writing a save-back-to-a-website script I'd love to know how that can be done too.)

The plug-in has a limited number of features from the full product that are appropriate for web browsing, that is, viewing, filling in, printing, and submitting data to a scripted web page. Since the vast majority of users cannot save the downloaded file back to the Web server this feature was not included because one is "browsing" not creating nor editing.
Now if one is using a special web server like Microsoft's SahrePoint server it is possible to integrate the full Acrobat product to check out, lock form editing by others, for editing and then saving back to the SharePoint server and remove the lock. The reason for locking the file being edited is to prevent conflicts in the edited versions, sort of like locking Word or Excel files on a network server.
You might want to consider all the issues involved in editing networked files which could be changed by multiple users at any time and the needs of the users to have some control over the changes.
Do not over think this. You are using a "Browser" which only browses.

Can I edit an preexisting vector image in PSCS5?

I know I can make a vector image in CS5, but is there a way I can import an existing vector image (ie. an .ai image) and then edit it in Photoshop?
I'm using CS5, on MacOSX Lion.

If you have Illustrator then you can get the paths into Photoshop so they are editable with Photoshop's vector tools. Open the vector file in Illustrator, select the required objects and copy to the clipboard. Paste into Photoshop, choosing "Shape Layer" or "Path" when prompted.
If you don't have Illustrator and want to bring a vector file into Photoshop, you can place it in a document as a Smart Object but you won't be able to edit the vectors with Photoshop's tools.

Embedded vector files aren't anti-aliased. How do I fix this?

When I attempt to embed vector files in Photoshop sometimes they appear without anti-aliasing. I've tried rasterizing them after they are embedded, but this doesn't fix the issue.

Rasterizing will just keep the bits you have.
Select the smart object layer, select free transform, turn on the antialias checkbox in the free transform options, and commit the transform (without moving anything).

Adding & editing strings in vectors

Hi guys,
I need to add a variable (containing a user defined string) to a vector (of type Object!).
Heres a snippet of what I've got so far:

Editing 2-D vectors ??

Hi all,
I have a 2-dimensional vector of vectors of objects =). In order to edit an object in one of the vectors in the 2-d vector I do the following pseudocode. By the way I have replaced my actual object name with Object for you to read the code easily

However, this results in adding the new object to everyone of the vectors in the 2-D vector. This code is not in a for loop so the value of index is fixed.
By the way, when i initialized vector2D I created a single non-empty vector of objects 'v' and kept adding it to the vector2D until the desired size was reached that is

vector2D.add(v);
Can anyone see whats wrong with editing a 2 dimensional vector in this manner

Please use ... tags, otherwise the forum will screw up the layout of your code.
The problem is that your initialization loop puts multiple references to the same Vector (the one "v" points to) into every position of vector2D.

Embedded Vector smart object fails to update after saving swatch library in Illustrator

I am using Photoshop CC 2014 and Illustrator CC 2014 on MacOS 10.9.5
I originally posted this in the Photoshop forum, but it was suggested that I try posting it here since Illustrator is likely to be the culprit.
To cause this issue;
1 - Paste an Illustrator into Photoshop as a Vector Smart Object
2 - Edit content with that object selected
3 - in Illustrator, save a swatch library in AI format
4 - Make a change to the object so that you can save changes, then save
5 - Switch back to Photoshop and let the vector smart object update

Apps for document editing and embedding!

Hello all,
seeking recommendations for an app to edit text for latest iPad!
I my case I am given often docs that I need to go through. Often I will copy&paste onto a note application and than start to cut them to the most necessary, summary notes and finally embed a google map for its location! With this app, I must be able to set order of listing and hopefully search: either by date of editing but NOT only/by my own date creation necessary for the project/cost/important time & dates for a project and other important variables that I could create depending on the projects on hand to compare, to update to reset order of listings!

You need to get Acrobat. Reader can't do half of the things you just described...

Making Vector Graphics Editable in Indesign

I am trying to import various eps and pdf files that are vector from different companies that weren't created in illustrator. Everytime I place them in my indeisgn document they come in as a flat uneditable file and I can't figure out how to import them so that they are still editable as the vector files that they are and I have already changed my clipboard setting so that "prefer pdf when pasting" is unchecked but it still doesnt import an editable file.
HELP! Its getting very frustrating.

Don't place the EPS file into InDesign. Rather, ...
Open the vector files in Illustrator. In Illustrator preferences, select AICB (Adobe Illustrator clipboard), not PDF. Select the vector art and copy to clipboard.
In InDesign preferences, uncheck Prefer PDF when pasting. Now paste from clipboard.

Can't Edit AutoCAD Drawings (Error 1415)

I like to copy AutoCAD drawings directly from AutoCAD model space and paste them into Visio. Usually I can edit the drawing in AutoCAD by double clicking on the drawing in Visio. However, certain drawings keep giving me the "1415" error
stating that is is unable to open the drawing. Sometimes the drawings open, but most times they don't. I have resaved the drawings in older versions of AutoCAD to make sure this wasn't a compatibility issue. Is there a way to fix this error?

Based on my research, if we choose to do a custom installation of Microsoft Visio with all Add-ons marked as "install on first use", and attempt to edit an embedded AutoCad
(CAD) object, the error message may appear.
In order to display and work with inserted AutoCad (CAD) objects in Microsoft Visio,
we must install the CAD Drawing component.
Following the steps to do so:

Can not open Excel 2003 embedded worksheet in Office 2010

I have seen many similar issues to this but I think I have some unique factors that are making my issue a bit tougher to resolve. I have a user who has a word doc which he opens in Word 2010. This doc has several embedded excel sheets. When he tries to click
one of these embedded excel sheets to edit he gets an error: "the program used to create this object is excel the program is not installed on your computer". It will give an option to repair which we have tried but it makes no difference.
Some things to note that I think makes this case more unique than others I have googled.
This seems to be the case only with embedded excel 2003 spreedsheets. He can open newer excel 2010 spreedsheets that more more recently added to the file.
He previously had Office 2013 which we had to uninstall, and put Office 2010 on. This was done because of a piece of software this company uses that was not compatible with office 2013. (Personally I think this may be where the problem is as there seem to
be remnants of Office 15 in the registry.)
I have tried the standard fixes of Disabling the Com add-ins, running office repair, and trying to Convert the embedded spreedsheet to an Excel Binary. The convert failed and gave me a generic error about possibly not being allowed to save to the location
or needing more memory or space but none of these are the case.
I have not yet tried to uninstall office 2010 and reinstall and I am hoping that I won't have to. This issue just seems odd to me. Other users can edit these embedded spreedsheets fine which is why I think it has something to do with the fact that he downgraded
from 2013 to 2010.
Anyone of thoughts, ideas, suggestions? Thanks.

I noticed that use newer excel 2010
spreadsheets that more more recently added to the file. Did you try to embed the Excel 2010 file to Word 2010 test? If it works fine, I suppose that it was a compatibility issue.
Because Excel 2010 had change the file format with Excel 2003.
I recommend you try to install Office 2010 sp2 and compatibility pack.

Random Vectors/images color inverted in print, but not in PDF. Where does the fault lie?

Sent a PDF to the newspaper printer and some of the images had inverted/strange colors. However...
In one case I had duplicate images of a pink vector flower. SOME of the flowers were inverted, to a dark blue/black, and some were fine(pink). These were embedded vectors.
In other instances vectors, went from orange to blue/black, pink to blue/black, and yellow/white to blue black. I specify because in one vector image, a ring, the ring was yellow, but the diamond was white, and it all changed to the same blue/black in print.
Finally, there were two greyscale Tiff photographs of a pair of ladies. These are not embedded, and have not been altered at all and since the last time this paper has been printed, (which printed fine). This time, they were inverted. Nothing else on the page was inverted.
As far as I can tell, there is not a separation issue, and I have saved the file from InDesign CC to pdf using the same settings as dozens of times before. The pdf on my end looks fine. The printer says they just print what they receive, but as far as I can tell, there is no issue on our end. The fact that some duplicated images printed fine, and others did not seem to confirm this. Everything is properly linked. Has anyone else experienced this problem? Is this a pdf, InDesign, or even an adobe problem at all, or it is something on their end? I have heard of inverted colors before, but can't find a solution (especially as I can't even see the problem on my end.)

Where does the fault lie? - in an environment where they (the newsprinter) collect up front, have no responsibility for quality and arrogantly believe, perhaps correctly, that you'll be back with another paying job in the future.
Check the file you sent via Acrobat Preflight or Output Preview for RGB elements.
Check the file you sent via Acrobat Preflight - Checks - For Transparency Used
Do any of these elements off color involve rgb or interact (with or near) any transparency?
(InDesign could show these attributes via the links panel or a Live Preflight. Both can be (probably should be in your case) changed via the PDF Export)

Photoshop Script Black and White Raster to Vector

I do not have AI Adobe for I do not want to spend the money and have to learn an other complex Adobe application. I'm no artist either. However at rimes I wanted to have AI live trace feature to change black and white line drawing into vector graphics. AI creates EPS files with embedded vectors. And can export the vector to Photoshop. Though Photoshop opens EPS as raster layers I find that EPS file created from tracing black and white lines and artwork with programs like potrace that use curves to create black vector shapes. That when these are opened in Photoshop as Black layer with transparency. When these layers transparency are loaded as a selection and the selections converted to path. I find the path are extremely good.
Potrace is a cross platform open source program packages available for many operating systems. Windows (32 bit) and (64 bit), Mac OS X (Intel), Mac OS X (universal),Linux (32 bit) and (64 bit), Linux (Alpha), Linux (Sparc64), Sun Solaris (Sparc), Sun Solaris (i386), Sun Solaris (x86_64), FreeBSD (i386), NetBSD (i386), OpenBSD (i386), AIX and AROS (i386). Potrace is a command line command. So it can be use started with options and passed a file from bat files and scripts. Potrace requires No instillation. All the needed potrace requited files just need to be place into a folder and potrace run from that folder as the current directory.
So a created a Photoshop script that more or less uses potrace like a Photoshop Plug. The script define a custom shape for the current active document using potrace and add a new shape layer using the new defined custom shape as the top layer. The script also toggle off the other visible layers so you just see the shape layer. You can use alt click on the shape layer visibility icon to toggle the other layer visibility so you can see how well it matches the document.
I'm a windows user so the Photoshop script I wrote though in javascript will most likely only run on a windows platform because of my use of windows features its command line start command and file system conventions. I'm quite sure a Mac variant could created. Here is screen capture showing how well the defile shape matches up and a link to the script. If the task can be recorded as a plain Action it can be applied to multiple Files for example via File > Automate > Batch or File > Scripts > Image Processor.
