Edit FCP over filesharing ethernet

After googling and looking at forums I'm not sure about this one yet. Is it or is'nt it possible to edit fcp DV or hdv footage over filesharing giga ethernet? I edit on a mac pro 2x2.33 connected to a G5 dual 1.8 with four 2TB firewire 800 discs.
Possible or not?

yes you can do this, but as afore mentioned, not so reliably. I have been working on setting up a cheap ethernet NAS soulution for a while now, and I have learned a lot about why this won't work well on a typical LAN. Editing over an ethernet cable is definitely doable, and some say better than fiber because of it's scalability, as there are now 10Gb/s ethernet, and fiber only goes to 4. But the system I just priced out is 35K. As far as connecting to another computer via gigE switch, it totally depends on how much you know about networking, and whether or not your switch can be configured for jumbo packets, and if the G5 is capable as well. Also, how much other traffic is being routed through this switch, and do you have IP reservations designated in the switch. I just did this two days ago, using two identical MacPro 3.2GHZ on a gigE switch connected to a Windows monster machine with an internal RAID 0 (software RAID, but still) and it worked seemlessly with one of them, but not with both, and I was using ProRes 422 HQ 1920x1080i footage. I was able to edit without a single dropped frame until I tired previewing on the second machine, and it dropped frames. THe first computer never dropped a single frame though, even with the other computer viewing the same files.
End result is, try it... either it works for you or it doesn't...

  • I get slow *** tranzfer speeds over da Ethernet. Why dis?

Hello, I have a pc running windows 8.1 and a Mac Pro (2006 edition) that are on the same router (both via ethernet). I have them both connected to each other using their respective "connect to another computer" features, and thus can access each other's hard drives. With that said, when I transfer data from one to the other (say, from the Mac to the PC), it results in slow *** transfer speeds (between 4 and 10 MB/s max). Why? (I have accounted for the usual-suspect variables, such as hard drives, and ethernet cables by using different hard drives and ethernet cables.) it has been at 3 MB/s for about 40 minutes now. Why?

Each computer should be wired to your Gigabit Ethernet capable SWITCH or Router. If you do not have a Gigabit Ethernet capable SWITCH or your Router ports are slower than Gigabit speed, Apple sells a five-port Gigabit Ethernet SWITCH in the Apple online store for about US$55.
Computer-to-Computer File transfers are handled directly by the SWITCH, they do not need to use the Router function.
Gigabit Ethernet requires cables with all 8 wires present, and Power-over-Ethernet is not allowed on those cables.

  • Hard drives for video editing - FCP

What drives do you folks recommend for use with FCP? I have an open slot in my machine and it was earlier recommended that I use an internal SATA drive so I am considering that.
I found this WD 'Green' drive; 1 TB for about $100. Also, I have a LaCie 500 BDE which has served me well, so I thought about getting another one, a 2TB for about $210. But if there are better choices out there, I would like to know so I can consider them.
I keep seeing in the forums that some people have no trouble editing with external FW drives and some do; the BDE I have has been running for four years on FW800 and I have had no issues with it - will I have an issue daisy-chaining another one into it?
You are all very helpful and I am thankful!

Hitachi for the internal. I've run Seagates for years without issue but apparently there is some bruhaha about the current versions.
The western digital enterprise class drives are fine. Their consumer level drives are problematic.
Some people swear by LaCies, some swear at them. Given the mass quantity of cases they sell in a year, you have no idea what drive will be in the case.
If you are looking for an external drive, recommended brands are Caldigit and Granite Digital. I used to recommend G-technology but their customer service is not overwhelming.
    Good luck.

  • How to transfer edited FCP project back to miniDV tape

Hi to all. I'm trying this for the 1st time, and it didn't work. I have a feeling I'm missin some connection between my Sony GV-D1000 miniDV deck and the G5 computer.
I'm trying to get back to tape my edited version (non-compressed).
From FCP I went to File - Print to Video. The software recognized the deck and it seemed to be recording, but when rewound the tape and played it back, nothing was there.
Any assistance of course is highly valued and appreciated. Currently, I'm connected to the computer via a firewire cable (to the back of the deck with a DV connection.

Make sure you can SEE it on the Deck first.
    Shane's Stock Answer #8:
A simple path is mac > firewire > camera or deck > rca cables > tv
Then start up your camera and tv, then open fcp.
Then go View > External video > all frames
Video playback should be Apple firewire NTSC (If you are using an NTSC set)
Audio playback should be Audio follows Video
Techinially, this should send synched video to your TV
If for some reason you can't view your timeline on your external monitor, there are a few things to try:
    1) Make sure that the camera/deck is connected and powered on BEFORE you open FCP.
    2) In the Final Cut Pro menu select AUDIO/VIDEO Preferences and make sure your signal is being sent out thru Firewire DV.
    3) Go to the menu and select VIEW>EXTERNAL>ALL FRAMES.
    4) Click in the % box above the image and select FIT TO WINDOW.
    5) Go to VIEW->refresh A/V devices
    6) Make sure the Log & Capture window is closed
If you want it to play in both the canvas and the external monitor you need to go to the FINAL CUT PRO menu and select AUDIO/VIDIO settings and make sure MIRROR ON DESKTOP is selected under the PLAYBACK OUTPUT section

  • Imac 8.1 Leopard 10.5.8 for editing FCP X new version.

I was using this Imac for light editing but I want to improve it at it best. My idea is Add FCP X add more memory ram and if possible a DVD blue ray burner for HD. Can I do that? How many GB of ram I can put in?. Should I upgrade to Snow leopard?. What I have to do to add a Blue ray burner? (any recommendation?) This is a good idea, or it's to much for this computer?
    Thanks..

    Hi Pete ---
Thnx for the quick reply and info - H.264 has been ok for me - overloads were just from normal usage, no QT involved....unless H.264 is working away in the background somehow?... eh? QT is necessary for Logic 8 ... am i right? could there be other unecessary items working that can be disabled? ...there are a lot of things in this that i dont use (score for one) it could be a great idea to have Logic more 'customisable' --- if that's a word.
As ever, its going to take a few updates before things run smoothly on a new OS, but....wow. -- best that people continue to put their issues up here with configuration info, i think. -- maybe 'someone will see' for future fixes in the updates....is that how it works? if so, cool. for the here and now, this is still one of the best spaces to get some quick fixes & dialog --- Logic Pro Help is a good one too.
    http://www.logicprohelp.com
I hope Apple are considering an online help team - there seems to be loads of helpful bods on here that could be of assistance with something like that.... Pete, speak to them will ya ?!!! haha -- I doubt the Logic team have walked out the room for a permanent vacation yet....i hope. With some of these 10.5 & LP8 things going on, NO CHANCE!! "...Oi you lot, get back to work!!..."
re; my LP8/Leopard situ, I've decided to just swap things around. Logic 8 & 10.4.10 goes back on the P.Book, Leopard can go on the HDD.... simple.
ta loads for the reply Pete ---

  • How LACP works over non-ethernet networks?

Hi all. Everybody knows how works LACP between two switches.
This is predictable wired links. But how it works in another, not clear ethernet networks? Supposing one link in LAG is over wireless transparent bridge. In this case values of packet delay, jitter and packet loss over one of the links differs from another.
Instead wireless bridge there can be IP/MPLS or SDH network for example.
How it works? Are there any tresholds for counters on links? Maybe any configurable parameters?

The configuration of each router should be provided in the Apple Support article link I provided you.
Basically you will not need to make any changes to the Motorola router just the AirPort Express.
    Roaming Network Setup Basics
For the AirPort Express base station:
Setup the base station as a bridge. Network tab > Router Mode: Off (Bridge Mode)
Provide a unique Base Station Name.
The Network Name (SSID) should be identical to that of the Motorola.
If using security, use the same security type (WEP, WPA, etc.) and password. Note: It is highly recommended that you use WPA2 Personal for best bandwidth performance.
The following are the basic setup steps:
Power all the networking hardware down.
Perform a "factory default" reset on the AirPort Express. Note: You may have to perform this more than once to make sure they "stick."
Connect one Ethernet cable between the Ethernet port on the Motorola router to the Ethernet port on the Express.
Power up just the Motorola router. Verify that you can get Internet connectivity with network clients either by wireless or by wire connections to the Motorola router.
Power up the Express base station. Use the AirPort Utility to select it.
Configure the Express with the Network Mode option set to: Create a wireless network. (Note: Do NOT set it to "Extend a wireless network."
Set the Wireless Network Name, Wireless Security, & Wireless Password options to be exactly the same as that used for the Motorola.
Set the Router Mode to: Off (Bridge Mode).
Select Update and allow the Express to restart.
Once restarted verify that you can roam with a wireless laptop or iOS device between base stations and still gain Internet access.

  • Traffic Shaping on 6880 between sites over metro ethernet

    Hi
I have a new dual site setup with 6880s at the core at one side and 3650 stack at the other. We have a 200mbps ethernet solution from our service provider but on testing we are maxing at a bit over 100mbps, iperf tests directly on the link are giving 200mbps so I need to apply some shaping to get the full usage from the link. In the past I have used srr bandwidth on metro switches but the 6880s don't support this. So I assume I need to setup  policy maps and apply to the physical interface? The interfaces are layer 2 trunks and we are stretching vlans between the sites. E.g. siteA has vlan20 and site B has vlan 20 over the metro ethernet service, site b is layer2 only and all routing and services are provided at siteA
Is it as simple as this? It seems too easy :) So I may be missing something. I just apply this on the physical interface at each side?
    policy-map POLICY-S2S-200MB
    class class-default
    shape average 204800000
    policy-map POLICY-S2S-200MB-IN
     class class-default
       police cir 204800000
         conform-action transmit
         exceed-action drop
    ~
    int gi1/1/1
    service-policy out POLICY-S2S-200MB-OUT out
    service-policy out POLICY-S2S-200MB-IN in
Your input would due treaty appreciated!

Ah, well that's great!  (Hmm, now I wonder if same feature is available on 6500 with sup2T or 6807.)
In that case, your output policy might be just as simple as what's in your OP.  Cisco isn't really clear whether all their shapers (or policers) are counting L2 and L3 or just L3. I suspect many just count L3. If that's true in this case, you may need to shape about 10 to 15% slower to allow for L2 overhead (this assuming your provider is providing 200 Mbps of "wire" bandwidth.
If you're able to shape on the other side, then there should be no need to also police the ingress.  Also, assuming provider limits bandwidth, there's no reason to police ingress at CIR rate.

  • Best quality for editing fcp with p2 standard definition and canon elura 100 widescreen

I am editing on FCP 7. Three cameras were used. Panasonic HPX 500 set in standard def 4x3, another small panasonic that shoots standard def was used only it was set a 16x9 and an even smaller Canon  NTSC Elura 100 was set on widescreen (16x9). My mistake is I want them look the best they can (at 16x9 or 4x3) when burned to DVD. I would prefer to go with 4x3 and crop the 16x9s. I have a Mac Pro 1,1 ; 2 Dual Core Intel Xeon 2.66 gHx and AJA Kona card. The question is: What is the BEST setting for log & capture of each device and what is the BEST sequence setting to build my project on. Right now everything looks like it has a soft shadowy image (basically low quality image - probably because it is mostly low quality... even the HPX 500 looks bad because I expanded it to fit the 16x9 screen of my sequence. And here's a strange event, even though my sequence setting is 720x480 the screen aspect ratio comes out 16x9... go figure. I seem to know less and less about this business every day. If anybody is willing to offer some advice on how I can make Chicken Salad out of this Chicken Shi_, I'd love to hear it. I hope it's just a settings problem on the ingest or sequence side.
    Thanks,

  • Edited FCP 16:9 video export to iMovie?

I'm trying to export some edited video in 16:9 format from FCP 3.04 to an iMovie 6.02. 16:9 project.
I can only get it to open up in iMovie as a squished 4:3 in a 16:9 frame.
Can anyone tell me how to get iMovie to import it and use it as a full 16:9?

  • Audio disabled in frame by frame editing - FCP 7

    Hello,
I have installed the update for Apple Pro aps and it seems to have turned something off. When editing in FCP 7 the audio for frame by frame viewing (via the arrow keys) has been disabled, in both senses (actual sound, and the sound level meter). Does anyone know how to fix this or what setting to change in user prefs? Makes editing a bit hit and miss at the moment!
    Many thanks

  • Editing FCP project audio in another audio application (Logic, PT or DP)

Many thanks in advance for any help - I am wrapping up a score for a friend's documentary and just don't have time or video knowledge to figure this out on my own.
I need to edit sound in his Final Cut Pro project in another application. Pro Tools, Logic or Digital Performer. I can't just get AIF bounces because in many cases I need to access his edits, requiring much of the raw audio immediately preceding and following his cuts.
What is the quickest way to do this? Do OMF files preserve raw audio? XML?
Again, many thanks for your input.

I found the XML approach to be the most reliable, but you need access to the full FCP project and all the assets for Logic to load it, which can be a pain due to project sizes.
OMF works, but doesn't preserve some of the audio mix settings, despite including them in the file. Sometimes this is important, sometimes less so. Not sure if recent versions of Logic have improved this behaviour.
Either will get the audio into Logic at the right places and preserves edits, and OMF is the simpler way of doing it. I can't remember offhand if the OMF export allows you to add handles on the audio - in the main what OMF does is repackage out the audio into new audio files inside the OMF bundle, so you get everything in the timeline but not audio either side of the cuts.
Edit: Yes, OMF export does give you the option of adding handles on the audio files.
If you need everything, the using XML and the original assets is the way to go imo.
Otherwise, OMF will get you the audio in a more convenient package (one file with all the embedded audio reexported inside it.)

  • Xserve: IP Failover over (redundant) Ethernet instead of FW?

    Hi folks,
this is my first post, so be be lenient towards me
Renewal of our xserves is on schedule next Month (w 10.5 Srv).
A new Configuration is planned: A second Webserver as Hot Standby for the main one. Unfortunately its not possible to connect them together by Firewire like the 10.5 IP-Failover help file shows.
Is it possible to use automatic IP-Failover by ethernet (dedicated, directly paired) and how we can implement this?
    tnx a lot, timo

IP failover works by each machine checking for a heartbeat from the other machine - as soon as the heartbeat fails it assumes the other machine has failed and initiates the failover.
The heartbeat can use any network connection - IP over FireWire, a direct ethernet connection between the two servers, or even the primary network interface used for all traffic.

  • Anybody using new PB to edit FCP HD???

I'm considering getting a ne PB, I'm used to running FCP HD on a dual 2 g5...will I be sorry if I switch?

Is this switch permanent? I don't see any reason why you'd want to go from a dual G5 to a powerbook using Final Cut. I use Final Cut Pro HD on my titanium powerbook, and it works pretty well for what I'm doing. However, if I were doing a lot more editing and extensive editing practices, I'd much prefer to cut on the G5, and use a powerbook just to cut minor stuff on the road.

  • MF4770n Linux Printing Over Wired Ethernet

Having a problem printing from Linux over the wired network to my MF4770n. CUPS finds the printer over the network just fine (I've tried all 3 connection options offered). CUPS reports the test prints finished OK. The printer wakes up from sleep and does nothing. No error messages on printer nor CUPS log.
Distro's tried: Debian Wheezy & Jessie, Ubuntu 14.04
Drivers installed: Both latest CUPS & UFRII DEB's from Canon website.
    Any help would be appreciated

I'm no expert but I don't think you can print from your wired Mac via the router- I had a similar problem a while ago. Now I have my printer connected to the express via usb that is shared by my laptops wirelessly. I also have an iMac connected to the express via ethernet that works fine too.
I think the printer has to be connected directly to the express, not through a router.
    Hope this helps!

  • Using Powerbook G4 Laptop to edit FCP

I'm wondering about purchasing a Mac Powerbook G4 to rough edit. What will I need besides the computer, any cards, more memory and such, and do you have any advice about the overall use of a Powerbook?
Also, I will eventually need to output data, and the final project will be edited on an Avid. Any info on that task would also be very helpful.
    Thanks,
    B

The Powerbook would be fine for offline RT and DV editing. You will need at least 1GB RAM and an external firewire drive to store the media. You will also need a PCMCIA firewire card so that you can use this machine to capture as well. It isn't wise to daisy chain camera to drive to powerbook. People have problems capturing this way.
Question...and this will seem odd on the FCP forum...but since your online editor will be using an Avid, why not buy Avid Express DV or Avid Express Pro? That way all you need to do is give him the project file and he can online lickedy-split. And you can use all the Avid effects you want.
As for FCP workflow, I mentioned that in your other post.
